CONTENT WARNING: Emotional and narcissistic abuse (specifically via a parent). And now for a second helping of my new subseries. In episode two of WE MEET AGAIN, A MEET OUR MAKERS SUBSERIES, we catch up with Azure Ray's Orenda Fink. Last time we spoke was around the release of her band's last album, Remedy, but this chat was spurred by a very different release: Fink's debut memoir, The Witch's Daughter. Because we'd already "met," I think we were able to go deeper and further faster and with more candor, which is fitting given the startling honesty and blunt storytelling in Fink's book, which largely circles around her fraught relationship with her mother, and the realization that she and her sister were victims of their mother's narcissistic abuse for most of their lives. As she recounts scattered memories from childhood through adulthood, Fink reveals some shockingly personal details about her upbringing and her efforts to separate herself from her mother's abuse. In this chat, Fink speaks with just as much candor about the book, her personal story, and where she is now. I couldn't be more appreciative of her time and her openness. The Witch's Daughter is out now, and while it is a tough sit sometimes, I think it's a vitally important book and beautifully told story of recognizing and then trying to transcend emotional hardship.
In this episode, Orenda Fink opens up about her journey growing up in chaos with an alcoholic mother struggling with mental illness who self-identified as a practicing and often vindictive witch. As she navigates the trauma of her childhood, Orenda escapes to pursue music, forming bands like Little Red Rocket and Azure Ray. We explore the lasting impact of childhood trauma, the codependent other parent, the fine line between mental illness and the myth of magic, and the ongoing search for healing and self-discovery. A raw and moving conversation about resilience, family, and mental health. Don't miss it!Learn more about Orenda Fink: Orendafink.com Join the Monthly Healing Community Membership

Best known as one half of the duo Azure Ray, Fink has also been a member of bands such as Art in Manila, O+S, Closeness, and High Up. Beyond her musical endeavors, Fink has ventured into writing; in August 2024, she released her memoir, "The Witch's Daughter: My Mother, Her Magic, and the Madness That Bound Us," which delves into her tumultuous childhood and complex relationship with her mother. In this episode, we talk about the book, shadow work, triggers, the matrix, spirituality, and so much more! If you want like deeper conversations, this is the one for you. Halloween season has arrived – that magical time when revelers across the country take to the streets disguised as ghosts, vampires, and witches. Here in Louisiana, of course, you'll find those kinds of spooky sightings all year round! On this week's Louisiana Eats, we've got all treats for you – and no tricks! Witchcraft has cast a spell on society for a long time, and with it, many literary and film references to good witches and bad witches. But it's not always so cut and dried. To begin our show, we speak with Orenda Fink, author of the memoir, The Witch's Daughter. Orenda, who's perhaps best known as half of the dream pop duo Azure Ray, tells us the story of being raised by a mother who claims to be a witch, and the madness that bound her family together. Orenda Fink will be presenting and signing her new book when she appears at Octavia Books in conversation with host Poppy Tooker on Friday, November 1 at 6pm. Next, we sit down with Cristina Quackenbush, the witchy chef behind Tatlo, a restaurant and absinthe bar in the French Quarter. From the menu to the décor, everything at Tatlo springs from Cristina's practice of benevolent witchcraft. Then, we hunt for specters in the home of Leslie Castay and Bryan Burkey, before raising a toast to our ghostly friends – with cocktails to die for! Sharon Keating and Christi Keating Sumich, authors of Hauntingly Good Spirits, take us on a historical romp through the supernatural by way of New Orleans' bar scene. Singer, musician and writer, Orenda Fink is famous for being one half of the duo “Azure Ray”. Orenda just published her beautiful first memoir “The Witch's Daughter: My Mother, Her Magic, and the Madness That Bound Us”, about her relationship with her mother suffering from borderline narcissistic personality, which made her fight with everyone, including her three daughters. Orenda tells us about her career in indie music, about writing her fascinating and deeply inspiring book, and about becoming a certified Jungian coach. From her mother, we learn that no one is all bad or all good; that art is a priceless form for catharsis and self-expression; and the power of magical thinking. Orenda also spoke about self-mothering, about individuation, about going No Contact with one's family. To learn more about Orenda and to order her book, please visit her website. It's September! Pumpkin spice lattes are back on sale, the Halloween aisles are up and stocked at stores like Target and CVS, Halloween mazes are getting ready to open, and here in Los Angeles temperatures are dipping down out of the low hundreds to the high nineties and low hundreds. And here at the Dana Gould Hour Podcast are rarin' to go. Sam Morrill is here. Sam is one of the best comedians out there right now. Flat out. Done. His special You've Changed is currently on Amazon Prime and his previous Netflix special, Same Time Tomorrow is now available on his YouTube channel. One of the best, Same Morril is here. Also, in our second half, moving into our holiday mood, Orenda Fink is here. Music fans will know Orenda as the co-founder of Azure Ray, she's also performed with Rilo Kiley and The Feint among others, but she has a new book out entitled The Witch's Daughter which is a memoir of her childhood with a mother who was a self-proclaimed witch. Whether she has supernatural powers or not remains to be proven but she put a lot of time and energy into casting spells and the like. It's an entertaining and sometimes harrowing story, to be completely honest and she's here to talk all about it. Orenda Fink. True Tales From Weirdsville takes you into through the past 80 year history of UFOs in America, from the famous Kenneth Arnold Mt. Ranier sighting that coined the phrase “flying saucer” in 1947 to the revelation in the pages of the New York Times of the Department Of Defense's Office Of Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification. And. Along the way. One of my favorite topics, UFO religions!

I last spoke to Orenda for episode 181 with her bandmate Maria Taylor for the band Azure Ray. Today, we're discussing her new book, “The Witch's Daughter.” I finished this book in about four days and couldn't put it down. It's an amazing book about trauma. There will be something that resonates with you, a family member, or a friend at some point while reading this book. Musician, author, and Jungian Depth Coach Orenda Fink talks about her forthcoming memoir The Witch's Daughter: My Mother, Her Magic, and the Madness that Bound Us, which recounts life dominated by an abusive, mentally ill mother; seeking to make sense of magic and faith; and Fink's escape through music and into Jungian therapy and her Last Eden in the Mojave Desert, from where she joined me remotely for this conversation. Fink will also read excerpts from this memoir of suffering, survival, and self-determination.Orenda Fink is an acclaimed musician, songwriter, performer, and writer getting her start in Birmingham, Alabama, with the pop rock group Little Red Rocket and later, in 2000, with the lauded ethereal folk duo Azure Ray, formed with longtime friend Maria Taylor in Athens, Georgia. A listen back to a show from 2017 on the theme of Quiet. My guests in that two-part conversation were Orenda Fink, a musician, writer, and Jungian Depth Coach, and the Benedictine monk, Brother James Dowd. In the second part of the show we'll hear from Orenda Fink on her music and career, dream analysis, and how a health condition requiring the quiet of complete voice rest impacted her sense of self. First, we'll hear from Brother James Dowd on his path from New York theater to Nebraska monastery, contemplative life, and embracing silence.Brother James Dowd of the Order of the Holy Cross is the founding Prior of the Incarnation Monastery and the Community of The Benedictine Way, which was founded in 2018 in north Omaha. It is the first Benedictine monastery in the history of the Episcopal Diocese of Nebraska. At the time of our 2017 conversation, Brother James had recently joined the staff of the Diocese for a two-year position as “Monk in Residence.” His ministry focused on enriching the community's prayer and spiritual life, and discovering and building better ways to befriend the poor in our communities. Prior to entering the monastery, Brother James lived in his home town of New York City, where for 20 years he worked as a director of more than 100 theater productions and numerous live events for television.Orenda Fink is a well known musician, performer, and songwriter. Their music has regularly featured in film and television programs and Fink has collaborated widely on numerous other music projects. Currently residing in California's Mojave desert, Fink is a certified Jungian Depth Coach with a specialization in shadow work and dream interpretation. Later this year I'll be in conversation with Fink about her new memoir, “The Witch's Daughter: My Mother, Her Magic, and the Madness that Bound Us” which will be available in August. At the time of our 2017 show on the theme of Quiet, Fink reflected back on her musical origins, self-reflection brought about by emergency surgery to correct a misdiagnosed heart defect, and the implications for her sense of self in the world when she was required to take an extensive period of complete voice rest.

The success of Azure Ray's self-titled debut seemingly took everyone by surprise — not least the band itself. Following the breakup of their group Little Red Rocket, longtime friends Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink reconvened to pen a set of songs aimed at coping with the recent death of Taylor's boyfriend. Heartfelt and emotional, the sad, dreamy songs would form the foundation for a duo now celebrating its 20th year. There have been hiatuses over the years, finding the musicians focusing on solo and side projects. After releasing three albums in three years, seven would pass between their third and fourth LP. It would be another 11 until Azure Ray released album number five, Remedy, in 2021. But the pair have remained close friends throughout and another album has almost always seemed like an inevitability — even if it takes a move across the country and a pandemic.
After a ten-year break from releasing albums, Azure Ray is back with Remedy, a gorgeous set of shimmering songs that redefines their classic sound. Singer/songwriters Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor open up about the process of making a record in isolation, the thoughts behind a few standout lyrics, and a variety of topics ranging from vocal cord surgery to wild suburban parrots.
Geburtstag feiern darf.

In this episode, we get to meet Azure Ray. Azure Ray is a dream pop duo consisting of Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink. The pair have been releasing music for just about 20 years, and are about to reissue their self-titled debut album for its 20th anniversary. In this chat, we discuss the reissue, including the process of poring over that period of their lives for the first time in years, as well as the band's origin story, which was borne by innate connection as well as shared tragedy. We also discuss what they've been up to lately, which included (tantalizingly) new music. And as an added bonus, we get an impromptu performance of one of their earliest-ever songs, written when they were still teenagers. I hope you enjoy, and thank you for listening.

“What have I done? Why didn’t I do it?” Fan-favorite Elizabeth Rambo sticks with me for another light-hearted discussion about Season Six. This time around we get misogyny and magic balls and whether the [CW: sexual assault] scene was really a necessary part of Spike’s journey or if it was a metaphor too far in episode 619, “Seeing Red,” also known as “The One That Broke the Fandom.” And leaving all that darkness behind us, we talk about 620, “Villains,” and Joss Whedon’s pathological inability to portray lasting happiness in his shows. Also, was Amber Benson finally making it to the opening titles for the first (and last!) a cruel mind@$#&, or a sweet farewell to the actress? (Elizabeth is, as always, a treat! But I personally am really uncomfortable talking about at least one of these episodes, so it’s awkward and you’ll probably hate me. But hey, podcasting is dangerous, I’ve always said so.) Next: it’s all been leading to this, kids! The payoff for all the pain and suffering the Scoobies (and us fans) have endured for the past season. A guest (or guests?) will join me to discuss episodes 621, “Two to Go” and 622, “Grave.” Get your party hats at the door. With a formidable career and devoted following that spans decades Maria Taylor takes the time during her busy record release schedule to shine a light on Louis Schefano via LaunchLeft. She shares about how Azure Ray came to be, her experiences on and off the road with Daniel Johnston, her time as a drummer in Conor Oberst's band, and most importantly her passion for helping other artists through her label collaboration Flower Moon Records. Bonus track, she and Louis play live in the studio and the conversation may or may not have cured her of her social anxiety too! On today's episode I talk to musician Maria Taylor. Originally from Birmingham, AL, Maria's been playing music for a majority of her life. Her first band, Little Red Rocket, which she formed with Orenda Fink as a teenager, was signed to Geffen in the mid-'90s and eventually morphed into Azure Ray. As Azure Ray, Maria and Orenda released four albums and numerous EPs, mostly on Saddle Creek Records. On her own, Maria has released seven solo albums, both on Saddle Creek and her own label Flower Moon Records, she's contributed music to numerous television soundtracks, and she's collaborated with everyone from Bright Eyes to Moby to Michael Stipe to Daniel Johnston. At the end of October, Azure Ray released Waves, their first new music in over half-a-decade. And it's great! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

This week Maria Taylor, a singer/songwriter who is known as half of the Azure Ray duo and has also released multiple solo albums, hears me the book "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by Milan Kundera.
Conversations on the theme of quiet with Orenda Fink, professional musician, songwriter, performer and writer as a solo artist and with Azure Ray, Art in Manila, O+S, Harouki Zombi, CLOSENESS and High Up, and with Brother James Dowd of the Order of the Holy Cross currently with the staff of the Episcopal Diocese of Nebraska for a two-year position as “Monk in Residence.”

1:《I don't sleep well》- Hello Saferide 2:《Safe and sound》-Azure Ray 3:《My body is a cage》-Sara Lov 4:《Angel》-Jack Johnson 5:《Homeless》-Maria Mena 6:《Secrets》-Maria Mena
We return with part two of my interview with Orenda Fink for episode #117. If you haven't heard part one - episode 116 - please go back and listen to that one first. Seriously. Orenda Fink is a recording artist who has been making music since the late 90s, beginning with the bands Little Red Rocket and Azure Ray. After Azure Ray went on an indefinite hiatus in 2004, Fink embarked on a solo career. As you'll hear in this episode, that solo career has also seen frequent collaborations with other artists, and the formation of two additional bands. Fink's current release, Blue Dream, is out now on Saddle Creek Records. She is currently on tour in support of the album. Look for tour dates at OrendaFink.com. This episode contains portions of the following songs: "Set the Woods On Fire" by Art In Manila, and "Alabama" by Orenda Fink. The music underneath my voice in the intro and outro is "Holy Holy" by Orenda Fink. All songs ©the artist. Thanks for listening. Enjoy. ©2014 The Dark Stuff Podcast Look for The Dark Stuff online at www.thedarkstuff.com and on twitter @davesplash
For episode 116, we have part one of my interview with Orenda Fink. Orenda has just released her third solo album, Blue Dream, on the Saddle Creek Records label, and is about to embark on her first tour in a few years. Orenda's musical journey began when she met singer/songwriter Maria Taylor at a performing arts school in Alabama. The two began writing songs together, and eventually formed the band Little Red Rocket. LRR was signed by Geffen Records while Fink and Taylor were barely out of high school! Following some personal tragedy, LRR broke up, but Fink and Taylor stayed together and formed the band Azure Ray. It was around this same time that Orenda became involved with the Omaha music scene, and Azure Ray was signed to Saddle Creek Records, which was home to Bright Eyes, The Faint, and Cursive, at the time. Orenda would eventually re-locate to Omaha, and marry Todd Fink, who is the lead singer of The Faint. When Azure Ray went on an extended hiatus in 2004, Orenda Fink began her solo career with the 2005 album, The Invisible Ones. Her restless artistic spirit had her continuing to form new bands and collaborations, and she also recorded with Art In Manila, O + S, and toured as a member of Rilo Kiley. In our interview, Orenda and I discuss the inspiration behind the new album, Blue Dream, as well as the making of the record and her upcoming tour. We then delve into Orenda's entire career, including the reunion of Azure Ray. Our discussion was pretty long, so I have decided to make this a two-part episode. Part Two will be episode #117. This episode contains portions of the following songs: "Blue Dream," and "This Is a Part of Something Greater" by Orenda Fink, and "New Resolution" by Azure Ray.
