The deeper we get into our study of transformation, the more we understand. We gain a greater understanding of how transformation works, the workings of the subconscious mind, how emotions operate and, most importantly, how we are in the world. This understanding can speed and deepen the healing process because we better grasp the nature of our struggles, and we can use our healing tools more effectively. But sometimes our understanding can hold us back. A combination of all this knowledge and all the tools available to us can result in intellectualizing the process to the point that we get stuck. This week in the podcast I talk about how we can overcome overthinking in a way that will liberate the healing process. The Information of Emotion – Healing Fundamentals (Part 1) (Pod #563)

It can often feel like our negative emotions are the enemy and it makes sense why. When we experience negative emotions, we feel bad AND they also get in the way of us making better choices in the moment. That is why when Gary Craig created his version of tapping, he called it "Emotional Freedom Techniques" because there is such a strong human desire to escape strong negative emotions. For me, the process isn't just about escaping negative emotions, but also understanding them. Each of the negative emotions we feel is our internal guidance system trying to communicate a specific piece of information via the emotion. An understanding of what information the emotion is trying to convey makes the journey to healing and transformation so much easier! This week's podcast is the first in a new series on Healing Fundamentals that will explore the underpinnings of the transformational process. The information conveyed by our emotions is the first part of the series because I believe that it is the lynchpin in the wider healing process. Here is how I think about what negative emotions are trying to say and, most importantly, how we can use that information to create transformation. A recent Harvard study found that 36% of the population of the United States, with some groups (such as young adults) experiencing a much higher prevalence of loneliness. I know that I have experienced more loneliness and disconnection in the last few years than at any other period in my life, and even post-pandemic it's a concern I work on with many of my clients. In September of 2007 I created Tapping Q and A with the express purpose of creating resources that would make it easier for people to get the most out of tapping. The tag line has been "Answers to the most common (and uncommon) questions about tapping, so that you can get the most out of each round of tapping." Recently, I have had a change of heart. I no longer want to help people just to tap more effectively. Instead, I want to help them to create lives they love by using tapping more effectively. That might not seem like a very big change. It might even appear to be no change at all. For me, the change is significant. In this week's podcast I explain what I mean by this shift in focus, and how I believe it will make tapping a more useful tool for you in practice. Why does healing have to be a process? (Pod #537)

One of the biggest frustrations of the tapping process is the fact that it is a process. One-minute miracles do exist, but they are rare. Naturally, part of us would like transformation to happen immediately, while another part of us understands that healing is more often a process that takes time. When these two parts are in conflict, it can slow down your healing progress. In this week's podcast, I share how to manage this sort of internal discord so that you can smooth the way for more rapid and lasting healing. The sneaky emotion we need to tap for (Pod #530)

One of the characteristics I most love about my clients is their capacity for compassion and their awareness of the suffering and struggles of others. Because this is the case, my clients are helpers and healers to others. And this is a wonderful thing! At the same time, when we are aware of the suffering of others, we have a tendency to shortchange our own transformation. We end up saying things like "I have it so much better than other people." But just because we are more fortunate than many others doesn't mean that we have to shortchange our transformation or feel selfish because we are taking care of ourselves. The reality is if you feel (consciously or subconsciously) you are being selfish by trying to heal, then you will sabotage any efforts to create healing and transformation in your life. In this week's podcast I am sharing a tap-along I did with one of the participants in the ID Transformation Retreat. During our follow-up sessions, a week after the retreat, one of the participants shared how selfish she was feeling for spending her time, money and focus on the retreat day. The tapping I am sharing helped her to recognize that taking care of herself is not selfish, but actually an empowering step towards being the person she wants to be in the world. Even if you don't think this is an issue you struggle with, I encourage you to tap along. I believe that this is one of the hidden issues that holds many of us back from creating the life we want. On the off-chance you have this belief lurking in your subconscious mind, it is worth taking a few minutes to tap along to this. One of the foundational beliefs of the work I do is that every part of our system is working for our highest good. Even when the system isn't working perfectly, we can appreciate its intention is that we are healthy and safe. For example, the part of me that is preventing me from talking about the work I do for a living is trying to help me avoid rejection, even though intellectually I know that not talking about my work will hinder my success. I know the approach isn't helpful, but I can appreciate why the resistance exists. This is great except when we are unsure why the resistance is holding us back. Recently, I was tapping on an issue with the phrase "I appreciate that this resistant part of my system is trying to keep me healthy, even though the way it is going about it is actually holding me back." Before I even finished saying the phrase, another part of my system spoke up in what can only be described as a profanity-laced tantrum about how "No! It doesn't appreciate the resistance. AND the only reason I haven't healed is because of this #%^&*@ resistance!!!" In this week's podcast we look at how to tap when we are just like this part that's frustrated at a lack of progress and unwilling to accept the intention of the resistance causing it. Feeling out of control is one of the hardest emotions to overcome. This is true whether we feel personally out of control or if our circumstances feel that way. The reality is that we are surrounded by things we do not control every single day, but we cope by recognizing that even though we don't control everything, we control enough to get what we want. This week's podcast explores why the subconscious mind responds the way it does when we are feeling out of control and, more importantly, how to release that feeling. As humans we are constantly changing and evolving. Sometimes this happens gently over a long passage of time. At other times major events in our lives cause us to see ourselves and the world in new ways. Even as this change is happening, our subconscious mind clings to the definitions of who we were and how the world was. It does this because the subconscious mind is most comfortable when the world is consistent and predictable. The subconscious perceives change as unpredictable and therefore dangerous. For that reason, the unconscious mind is slow to catch up when we change our definitions of ourselves. This means that even when we change how we see ourselves, our actions don't always match the new version of ourselves. This week's podcast explores how we can tap to release outdated definitions of ourselves so that our actions can match who we are today. The human experience is complicated. At times it can feel like we are being pulled in multiple directions, as if we are of two (or many) minds. I recently thought this was expressed perfectly on one of my favorite TV shows, Project Runway (US version). In the midst of struggling with choosing her creative direction one of the contestants, Victoria Cocieru, said “In my brain I have a thousand little brains and they are fighting with each other.” It can be hard to take action or create a space for healing when we are of so many minds. Alan Davidson was the perfect guest for a discussion of how humans can simultaneously be pulled in many different directions. I am a big fan of parts work and in this conversation Alan shares his unique and powerful work with archetypes, and we explore how it intersects with and complements parts work. It was with huge sadness that I learned of Alan's death in April of 2021. This was one of the last interviews he did. He was a thoughtful practitioner, a loving man, and a friend. Recently in a social media post a friend used the phrase "fiercely kind" which really stuck in my mind, although to be honest I wasn't exactly sure what it meant. At one end of the spectrum we can be too kind-hearted for our own good, which is a kind way of saying we are being doormats to others. On the other end of the spectrum, we might think we know what is best for others and run them over with our ferocity. Being fiercely kind falls somewhere in the middle of those two extremes where we make kindness a priority without coming across as pushy or all-knowing. In this week's podcast I reflect more deeply on the idea of fierce kindness and tap to help make that a priority. As time passes this daily grind can accumulate into something bigger and more serious. It's not just a matter of moving more slowly, it's more like hitting an emotional wall. Twelve years ago today the very first episode of the Tapping Q and A Podcast was published, which means a little celebration is in order. Sometimes we hold ourselves back from celebrating. Perhaps because we are worried the achievement isn't big enough to shout about, or others may think we are being immodest, or if we celebrate something small, then we will lower our standards. I have found the exact opposite to be true. The more we celebrate our victories, no matter how small, the more we create a sense of momentum, which motivates us to take more action, and we are more appreciative of what we have. Recently I conducted a survey of my readers and listeners asking them what their biggest struggle with tapping is. There were five really common responses: Not knowing where to start * Having way too many issues to tap for Not knowing what to say when tapping for a particular issue Tapping consistently * Finding that tapping for one issue turns into an avalanche of emotions that feel too daunting to manage These responses were no surprise because I hear the same concerns from my clients all the time. But there was a sixth response that was not only surprising, but also a little heartbreaking. It was: "I am not worthy of healing and transformation." There are lots of reasons why someone might feel this way. We have squandered opportunities to heal in the past, we have made too many mistakes, it is too late and we should have started sooner, or simply it is something that is for others, but not for me. To my great surprise, as I was recording this podcast I found my way to some of my own feelings of unworthiness. I didn't think it was something I was struggling with. Even if you don't think this is an issue you struggle with, I encourage you to tap along as I have a feeling it is a hidden resistance for you as well. In the middle of the day it is easy to find ourselves distracted. One minute we are working on a task...the next we are sucked into one of our social media accounts, glued to a YouTube video, or conducting some frivolous internet research. AND if we are not careful, we surface 30 minutes later and realise we haven't gotten anything done. When this happens it is much more than just being distracted. We have all been trained to push on, to push through, and to maintain a stiff upper lip. Sometimes that isn't possible. Sometimes there are hard things in our lives and we feel overwhelmed with sadness. Right now there is so much going on in the world. Many of us feel disconnected, isolated, alone, anxious and overwhelmed. Some days are OK, other days not so much. Late last week I was having one of those down days. So I gave myself permission just to be sad. To feel my emotions fully and let the tears flow. After a good cry I did a little more tapping and recorded that tapping session, so you can tap along with me if you like. Know you aren't alone. Managing major transitions and life changes can be difficult. Not only can these changes impact the work we do, where we live, and who we spend time with, they also impact the way we see ourselves and how others define us. When we are going through major changes, a primitive part of the brain starts to kick into overdrive to keep us safe. This part of our subconscious mind wants to protect us in the belief that the more predictable our life is, the safer it is. This is so true that our subconscious mind will even choose a path or experience that is painful if it is an experience that is also predictable. That means that when we are going through major life changes, we may be dealing with an additional layer of emotional unrest that’s overly alert to possible danger. In this week’s podcast we tap for being emotionally calm in the face of a major life transition. There are two important reasons that it is useful to tap for disappointment. First, it doesn't feel good to be disappointed. Second, if we spend too much time feeling disappointed we are training ourselves to believe that hope is a bad idea. When working with my clients, I have found that people who are interested in personal development also usually take the choices they make seriously. They want to make sure the choices they are making line up with the vision that they have for the person they would like to be. As a general rule this is a good and useful approach to making choices. The problem comes when they feel like they have to justify every choice they make AND if they don't have a clear justification for the choice, then it feels as if they are choosing poorly. Sometimes we want to make a choice just because we want to make that choice. Not because it lines up with some higher purpose. Today we are going to tap to give ourselves permission just to make a particular choice because we want to and being OK with not having to justify that choice. Some days these feelings are at the front of our minds and hearts, other days they're constantly playing in the background. Many of us have a love/hate relationship with social media. One one hand I genuinely love how easy social media makes it to stay connected to my friends and family from all over the world. It's great to be able to see what they are up to. I love seeing their kids grow up and I love being able to share a joke across the country and across the world. At the same time, looking at the seemingly perfect pictures others post on social media about all the good times they are having can be perilous. This is especially true for the current situation we are in the middle of right now. As we struggle with our day-to-day we are confronted by pictures of all the incredibly creative things people are doing with their free time and how they seem to be handling this mess so much better than we are. It's vital to remember that social media tends to show us a carefully curated version of people's lives. It is the good things. It is the happy things. It is the pretty things. When we only see the best of other people's lives it's easy to feel like we are failing and that comparison can feel toxic. When we are describing ourselves (or when others are describing us) we identify with a whole host of different characteristics. You might be known as a hard worker, a caring person, a great wit, or a loyal friend. Some of these characteristics are aspirational, some are from the ways others describe us, and others may have been picked up from our families and cultures of origin. These characteristics aren't bad in themselves because they help us to understand ourselves and often give us something to strive for. But they can become problematic when we use them as the sole measuring stick to judge ourselves, and when we beat ourselves up emotionally for not meeting these frequently unrealistic standards. This week's podcast explores how and why we pick up these identities, how they can be harmful, and also how to tap to release identities that do not serve us. I like to check in with my email newsletter readers to find out what struggles they are facing with tapping so that I can create the most useful resources possible. The majority of the responses I've received describe a similar problem, described in one of two ways. They are "I never remember to tap" and "I forget to tap in the moment of distress". There are two reasons why this happens. First, building a habit takes time and just because we want to do something regularly doesn't mean we automatically start to do it. In Podcast 201 I teach you easy ways to make tapping a habit. The second reason we don't tap is because there is a subconscious part of us that resists healing. It isn't that we want to suffer, but on some level we believe that the safest option is to stay stuck exactly where we are. It doesn't have to be this way. This week's podcast covers why we don't tap, even when we know it will be helpful, and how to start tapping more regularly. When I launch a new product in my business, I expect to reach certain sales goals. In addition to the outcome, we also have expectations of how we should feel when we are doing something. On one level it's not enough just to give a good presentation at work, because a part of us wants to feel completely in control and confident while giving that presentation. This situation gives rise to a great deal of negative self-talk. We beat ourselves up in the moment for not doing well enough AND we beat ourselves up after the fact for not meeting our expectations. New York City is a wacky place. One of the things that I have encountered firsthand is how amazingly different the dating scene is here compared with other cities. First, there are millions of people, many of whom are single, which vastly increases the pool of potential dates. Second, everyone is very busy so dates can be short (and feel a bit rushed) because everyone seems to have less time. Third, because of the first two points, people move on to the next prospective suitor more quickly than I have experienced other places. Because of this I have met some fascinating and wonderful women, I have consumed lots of really good food and drink on these dates, and I have been on more first dates in my short time in NYC than most people go on in their entire life. In this process I've learned two major lessons that have impacted my entire life: Say yes more. Making sure your yes means yes and your no means no. The most primitive part of our emotional guidance system is our fear response. Fear's primary goal is to keep us from dying. I know that sounds like an overstatement, but this is exactly how it functions. Of course it's good that part of our internal guidance is on alert and doesn't want us to die, but in the modern word just because we fear something doesn't mean there are fatal consequences. Because of this, our fear can often get out of proportion. When we are acting out of fear we don't make the best choices. Sometimes we just freeze and don't do anything at all. At the same time, we don't want to be so casual that we become careless. When I am in a pressured situation my goal is to move from fear to urgency. When I am feeling a sense of urgency I understand that I need to act decisively. While fear makes us feel stuck, urgency gives us focused energy to take action. It is all too easy to feel trapped by both past choices and your current situation BUT they do not define who we are or who we can choose to be. In this short tapping audio we place ourselves at a fresh starting point. This audio is lifted directly from a client session, with my client's permission. I have also edited out my client's voice so that you can tap along as if you are working one-on-one with me. This is the perfect type of audio to use to start your day! Sometimes we find inspiration in the strangest places. A few weeks ago I attended the On Air Fest, an event for podcast creators and podcast fans. One of my favorite presentations was given by Shima Oliaee who was one of the producers for Dolly Parton's America. During the presentation Shima shared a number of lessons she learned from interviewing Dolly and working on the project. Dolly is clearly a woman who feels deeply. When talking about how she deals with positive and negative emotions she said, "When I feel an emotion I am fully committed to it." This week's podcast explores what being "fully committed" to our emotions means and how we can use this idea to get more out of our tapping. At the time of the recording of this podcast the COVID-19 virus is starting to impact daily life around the world. The number of cases is spreading. Sporting events are being canceled. People are being encouraged not to travel. Because of the constant stream of news and information on our social media feeds, it is easy to feel panicked. This panic is rooted in two factors. The first is the fear about getting sick. The second is the fear caused by knowing we can't do anything about the big picture problem. It's as if it is something that is slowly creeping towards us and we are powerless to stop it. This week I have for you a simple tap-along audio and script to help you to feel calm in the face of a global problem that we don't feel like we can do anything about. Pride is on the list of the seven deadly sins and whether explicitly and implicitly, our culture discourages us from displaying pride or egotism. Instead, we are taught to do our work and keep our heads down. It is true that some people have outsized egos that cause them (and others) problems, but just because there are egomaniacs in the world doesn't mean that we shouldn't feel pride. Feeling a sense of pride in our work and our capabilities is healthy. It helps us to stay motivated and continue to do good work and it allows others to see what we can do, what is possible and how we can help them. Tap along with this week's podcast to cultivate a healthy sense of pride in who you are, what you can do, and what you have accomplished. One of the most difficult ideas that my clients wrestle with is that of forgiveness and I have found that they often lack a clear understanding of what forgiveness is and what it is not. When we forgive someone else it can feel like we are saying it is okay, that they don't have to take responsibility for their actions, or that they are allowed to hurt us again. This is NOT what forgiveness is! Instead forgiveness is the process of choosing no longer to be stuck in the past emotionally. In this episode I define what I understand forgiveness is and what it is not. This will help you to embrace forgiveness in a healthier way. I also demonstrate how I tap for this idea of forgiveness to make it even easier to integrate. Working with clients has allowed me to understand a fundamental of human nature: All the choices we make are functional choices. In practical terms this means that all of the choices we make are the best choices that we can make in any given moment based on the information we have and our current resource state. This does not mean that we always make good choices, choices we are proud of, or choices that we would like to make again in the future. Instead it means that we are making choices for a reason. When we are able to recognize the emotional and intellectual reasons behind our choices, it highlights the areas we can address with tapping so that we can make better choices in the future. In this podcast I share how you can understand why on a subconscious level we are making "functional" choices AND how we can make better choices in the future. Our emotional response is our internal guidance system trying to keep us safe and on track. Fear is an extremely helpful emotion in that it helps us to see danger BUT problems arise if our fear response is excessive and causes us to go into a state of flight, fight, freeze, or fog. When this happens, the fear moves from pointing out a problem, to crippling us. Even when we notice that we are feeling fearful, it can be difficult to leave that state because our system thinks this is the best way to keep us on guard. Today we are going to tap for neutralizing our fear and moving to a more useful state of focus and urgency. By having a proper sense of urgency we can stay on task without being crippled by fear. Every time we make a choice we are limiting our future options. That is the simple reality of choice. I have time for one movie tonight, so if I choose “Rear Window” I can’t watch “Strangers On A Train”. Recognizing that one choice can limit our future choices can hold us back from taking action because we don’t want to miss out. In the end we choose to do nothing, which is a choice in itself. Many of my clients would identify as the 'black sheep' of their families or communities. Because they moved to the beat of their own drums, they were usually out of step with everyone else. This can be particularly difficult for youngsters to handle because it felt unsafe to express their true selves. In order to survive, it's human nature to develop tricks, tools, and techniques to get by. At the time they were the best (and often the only) way to get through those difficult times, but the tools that were helpful as children are not necessarily helpful as adults. The problem is that when we use certain tools and tactics for so long, they become ingrained and habitual. How To End A Tapping Session (Pod #405)

How we end a tapping session is sometimes more important than how we begin it. At the beginning it is most important that we simply start tapping. With each successive round of tapping, we gain clarity about the issue at hand and where we should focus our efforts. For me, there are two goals for the last little bit of tapping at the end of a session. First, I often feel a little groggy and fuzzy brained when I've been tapping for a while, which makes sense as tapping often releases a lot of stored emotion and memories. It is important that I'm able to return to my day feeling calm and grounded. Second, even though we have stopped tapping doesn't mean the process of healing and transformation has ended. The new thoughts and beliefs we've connected with are still integrating even after the tapping stops. At the end of the session, I find it useful to remind myself that the process of healing and transformation will continue after a session. This recognition encourages me to come back and tap again and again. By taking a few minutes to tap in this way, we can get the most out of our tapping sessions and also set ourselves up for success after the session. Our need to bring peace and comfort can override all other thoughts and considerations. This is not always the healthiest choice for us in the short and/or long term. Sometimes when we choose to help we do so by taking on the burdens of our loved ones. Many times we can carry these burdens for years without realizing, or we take on burdens when we are very young and do not remember choosing to do so. When the burdens of others have been a part of our lives for so long they feel like they are a part of us and we don’t realize that they can be released. If you have been following me of any length of time online, then you know how much I love goal setting. I find that goals are useful in clarifying what we want, helping us to create an actionable plan, and give us the tools to evaluate our progress. At the same time, having a clear idea of what we want can actually become a problem when we turn success into an all-or-nothing proposition. When we make our goals all or nothing, anything less than perfection will feel like a failure. For example, let's consider a painful knee that hurts at the level of a 7 on a 0 to 10 scale. If my all-or-nothing goal is to be completely pain free, even a reduction in the pain to a 2 will leave me feeling dissatisfied. This causes two problems in the moment. First, we aren't able to appreciate the progress we have made. Second, we are much less likely to take action again in the future because we are unlikely to attempt tasks at which we "failed" in the past. Gene Monterastelli, the founder of Tapping Q&A (tappingqanda.com), provides an overview of tapping as a therapy option to help people overcome obstacles in their lives. Monterastelli earned his degree from the Catholic University of America. His vast experience in various therapeutic techniques includes hypnotism, guided imagery, NLP, parts work, as well as meridian based tapping protocols such as EFT. Monterastelli talks about his background. He discusses how social anxiety led him to discover tapping. Monterastelli's road to recovery and healing from his anxiety issues were aided by this interesting therapeutic technique and he decided to share his knowledge with others in his eBook. His popular audiobook, Recovering Self: A Healing Manifesto is available for everyone, at no cost. Monterastelli recounts how his social anxiety had gotten so bad before he discovered the power of tapping, that he couldn't even call out his stop on airport shuttle buses, or help friends with favors that required a simple phone call to someone. In short, his life was in need of a solution, and he found it through tapping. Monterastelli talks about studies regarding the effectiveness of acupuncture and how it has been proven to be a useful tool in pain management and also in battling depression and phobias. He discusses the early work of tapping therapy founder, Dr. Roger Callahan, who first decided to take the concept of acupuncture and adapt it to a form of healing using only hands and fingers to tap meridian points, abandoning the needles, to provide benefits to more people. However, the algorithms of Thought Field Therapy (TFT) are rather complex, and thus one of Callahan's students, a man by the name of Gary Craig, simplified the technique even more and thus became the founder of what we know today as EFT Tapping Therapy. Monterastelli talks about the tool-sets that people can utilize within the context of this therapy. He talks about the basic tenets of tapping that include tuning in to your issue (physical pain or emotion) and then tapping points. By moving from tapping point to tapping point, and talking through the problem, you can then conquer the problem. Monterastelli talks about trauma and how much tapping could be necessary to find relief and to recover. He talks about the many and various issues that tapping can be utilized to combat. The tapping expert discusses how tapping can be used in a clinical setting. He outlines how simply being present is important in the process. And he goes into detail about some of the kinds of issues that people can tackle by utilizing tapping. Monterastelli works with clients across the globe, one-on-one over the phone as well as through Skype. Some of the main areas he provides his expertise on are as follows: stress, limiting beliefs, anxiety, smoking, learning disabilities, pain management, and even relationship issues.

Gwenn Bonnell is always one of my favorite guests on the Tapping Q and A Podcast because every time I talk to her I learn something new. This interview was no different. In this interview we talk about how to tap for resentment. And this is not just about feeling resentment towards other people. We can also resent our computer for not working, a company for not being helpful, and ourselves for making the same bad choice again and again. The interesting thing about resentment is that it is an emotion that bubbles below the surface so it isn’t always obvious to us, like anger or sadness. Because of this we can forget to tap for it because it doesn't feel like it is impacting our immediate present. In this interview Gwenn shares a great 3 step tool to get to the core of resentment, and how to tap for it once you are there.
