I've been thinking recently about major life changes that families go through and how these can be at the same time very challenging, yet also an opportunity for amazing growth for individuals and for families. This was sparked by three things: The impending arrival of Jack's baby. The recent arrival into our family of our first grandchild. Our daughter moving out of home to go to uni in Auckland (which is where we are this weekend), which will make me and my lovely wife officially “empty nesters”. In any family, these types of events are major milestones, and I think for all of them, there's no real way of fully preparing for them. All the wisdom, guidance, and advice —however well intentioned— from others can properly prepare you for such a step-change in life. A metaphor that springs to mind for me is a ship setting off to sail in unchartered waters. These trips can be exciting, nerve-wracking, anxiety-provoking. There is the potential in these journeys to go wildly off course or become beaten down by the elements and ending up floating untethered in the middle of nowhere. Rest assured there are some good tips to follow to help people navigate these journeys – they won't ensure smooth sailing but should help weather the storms. Have some good rhythms in your daily life that help provide stability and reassurance. It could be having a daily routine around exercise or a daily practice of prayer/meditation; maybe a general agreement to always come together at a particular time (e.g., for dinner together). Have these as general guidelines rather than rigid rules. As much as possible keep the bookends of your day consistent – have a usual time for getting up and going to bed. Sleep-ins and big nights are okay (and sometimes will be needed!) but try and let these be the exception rather than the rule. Practice forgiveness – when we're navigating uncharted waters, we can often get stressed and speak or act in a way that we don't usually (even more if we're sleep deprived), which can have an effect on those around us. Practice assuming that other people usually act from good intentions (just like you do) and work to actively forgive those who inadvertently do or say the wrong thing. Hopefully that will help navigate times of family change! LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, we have Lisa, who shares her compelling story of sobriety and reclaiming her life. Growing up Lisa faced a challenging childhood with a mother suffering from MS. Despite her struggles with self-esteem, she discovered sports as an outlet. However, in high school, alcohol became a coping mechanism for fitting in and dealing with uncomfortable feelings. Lisa recounts her college years, marked by risky behavior and other challenges, underscoring the central role alcohol played in her life. Her 20s and 30s saw professional achievements, including a career as a police officer. But personal losses, family tragedies, and health setbacks led to a deeper dependency on alcohol. A turning point in 2023, driven by sheer frustration with the control alcohol had over her, catalyzed her sobriety journey, marked by strong community support, embracing online platforms, and a profound commitment to self-care. Lisa shares insights about the importance of community, gratitude, and acknowledging the challenges of sobriety. And this is Lisa's story on the Sober Motivation podcast. "Your child's early development is the most valuable thing you have. Build your life around them and let the other stuff come later." - Lee Cockerell Having a child is indeed a life-changing occurrence. When my son was born 54 years ago we were young, with no substantial means of income. Despite the financial challenge, we knew we had the most precious gift in our arms. That is why time management is incredibly important when major life events seem to disrupt the balance of work, home, and family. Expectant couples or new parents who are facing overwhelming changes often struggle with managing their time effectively. Take a moment to prioritize tasks and make sure to keep nurturing other relationships during these challenging times. Both parents need to support each other and make necessary lifestyle adjustments. Utilizing available moments, adjusting routines, and reevaluating priorities will help people fit tasks around the needs of the baby. The first six years are the most crucial for a child's development. It's when they need you the most. Your morning routine might have to take a backseat, and you might have to catch up on work when the baby takes a nap. But that's the beauty of it, isn't it? It's a juggling act; you adjust, you adapt. It's not the easiest, but the most rewarding. The dishes can wait, the unread emails can wait, but the baby - they grow up faster than you can imagine. So, hold them close, give them your time and love, and trust me, everything else will fall into place. While having a child can seem to be a disruption, make sure to prioritize them. Let everything else take a back seat. At the end of the day, your child's well-being and happiness are what matters the most. Make sure to share this episode to anyone that may be facing challenges and adjustments that come with major life changes, particularly having a baby. The conversation provides a wealth of advice and practical tips for managing your time effectively and nurturing meaningful relationships amidst the chaos. Welcome back! Today we are joined by strength & conditioning coach (and returning guest), Gabrielle Bolin. When Gab last joined us in 2021 for Episode 49, her life was in a much different place. Today, she opens up about everything that has changed for her in the past year and a half. what we talk about: why she decided to pursue a different type of fitness career what she loves about strength & conditioning vs. group fitness the elements of group fitness that she was no longer connecting with how large life changes tend to happen in waves how leaning into the change helped her find the path she truly wanted to be on realizing she was not happy in life or in her marriage what led her to finally admit to her husband that she wasn't happy (& everything that happened after that) staying in a relationship simply because you're afraid of what might come next ending a marriage when there is no one big issue learning to love being alone & more! You can find Gab on Instagram at @gab.bolin and head to @thefortnyc to learn more about working out with her. what we're loving this week: Carleigh: watching former guest Morgan Raphael on Amazon Prime's Cosmic Love (listen to our episode with Morgan here) Mia: Fortuna Skin products As always, find us on Instagram @mostlybalancedpodcast and on our website. Moe has opened up before about his heart health, and when he began physically feeling the stress he's been putting his heart through, he decided that it was time to make some changes. For nearly two weeks, Moe has completely cut out alcohol (cold turkey!), is introducing more exercise, and doing a full diet change-up.He's come to terms with the idea that he's not as young as he used to be, and eating out regularly and drinking heavily were weighing on him. He's not putting a timeframe goal on this new lifestyle adjustment, but the other cohosts think he might slip during the upcoming holiday weekend.
