The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office has concluded a multi-agency human trafficking operation that resulted in 115 felony arrests.The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office said in a press conference on Monday that the operation, called "Buyer Beware," focused on reducing the demand which drives sex trafficking.According to the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office, the operation also sought to bring awareness to human trafficking and highlight the new law which makes solicitation of prostitution a felony.The sheriff's office released the following collection of mugshots related to arrests made in the operation.The partnering agencies in the operation included the Fort Worth Police Department, Arlington Police Department, The Texas Department of Public Safety, The Texas Office of the Attorney General, The Tarrant County Constables Offices of Precincts 3 and 6, The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, and Homeland Security Investigation.https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/tarrant-county-sheriffs-office-arrests-115-people-in-human-trafficking-operation/2765482/

Episode 11- Abusive commercial vehicle lawsuits have put a target on the backs of Texas small businesses, even if they have not been involved in an accident.  According to the Texas Office of Court Administration, motor vehicle litigation has increased 118 percent in Texas since 2008, while other types of personal injury litigation have decreased. A lawsuit was filed after one out of every 10 crashes in 2019, up from one in every 17 cases in 2008. This has caused the price of insurance to skyrocket, whether or not a company has had an accident or even owns a vehicle. Many commercial vehicle operators in Texas are small businesses that simply cannot afford the risk of an abusive lawsuit or the increased cost of insurance. If a company is not forced out of business by the increased burden, these costs are often passed on to Texas consumers in the form of more expensive goods and services. The City of Austin, Texas Office of Sustainability has received a $2.5 million national climate change challenge award from Bloomberg Philanthropies. The award was in recognition of Austin’s aggressive environmental goals, which include making municipal operations carbon neutral by 2020. The award means Austin will be part of a two-year accelerator program that will provide the city with technical assistance and support valued at $2.5 million. We had Zach Baumer, Climate Program Manager with the Austin Office of Sustainability, and Amy Atchley, Senior Project Lead, Austin Energy Electric Vehicles and Emerging Technologies in the studio. We also discussed the City of Austin's recently approved 100 year water plan called "Water Forward". We had David Foster, the Executive Director of Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund in the KOOP studio with us.

Some sources are on their way out (coal) while others are just coming into their own (solar). A diversified energy market makes electricity in Texas cleaner, cheaper, more reliable, and more resilient. Our guest for Part 2 of Shades of Green was Adrian Shelly, the Director of the Texas Office of Public Citizen. He spoke of the importance of energy diversity in Texas and how Public Citizen is advocating for it. A new report produced by the UT Energy Instituted called “The Full Cost of Electricity” illustrates the importance of energy diversity and our need to reduce dependence on coal plants.

he Federal Government, the US Department of Energy, and the nuclear industry are still searching for a site to permanently store high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants. High-level radioactive waste is so dangerous that it must remain isolated from living things for thousands of years. It is mainly irradiated (spent) fuel rods from nuclear reactors, which still contain most of their original uranium, as well as with radioactive strontium, cesium and plutonium, which are created during the reactor fission process. A site in the Texas Panhandle is being considered for permanently storage radioactive waste. The environmental and social risks are staggering, without even mentioning the risks of terrorism. Is this a risk Texas should own? To give us an update on the situation, and how citizens can participate in the conversation and take action, we had long time environmental activists Tom "Smitty" Smith and Karen Hadden in the studio with Shades of Green. Tom "Smitty" Smith recently retired after leading the Texas Office of Public Citizen as its Director since 1985. Smitty has been a prominent advocate and activist in state and local environmental, ethics, and campaign finance battles since he arrived in Texas in the 1970's. Although he is retired, he is still active in environmental issues. Karen Hadden is the Executive Director of the Sustainable Energy and Economic Development (SEED) Coalition which works for clean air and clean energy. It supports affordable energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions to meet our energy needs. Karen is also the Chair for the Electric Utility Commission which advises the Austin City Council regarding Austin Energy policy issues.
