In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by dermatologist, and my old pal, Dr. Katie Manno. This is a chat I've been wanting to highlight on this podcast for years now, and it lived up to my lofty expectations. Dr. Manno gives us a thorough runthrough on all things skin health related and how it pertains to extended time in the outdoors, including why sun protection is so important, the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens and which is better for the trail, how much and what SPF sunscreen hikers should use, the safety profile of chemical sunscreens and what chemicals specifically to avoid, sun protective clothing and the science behind UPF ratings, vitamin D considerations when using sunscreen and/or sun clothing, what supplements and skin care products she recommends to optimize skin health, and much more. Needless to say, you will come away from this chat smarter than you entered it.  We wrap the show with why one former guest always uses a bear canister when thru-hiking, we opine on whether donating hair can land you in the slammer, I give an update on my 175-mile lap around Denver, and the triple crown of dog breeds. Tisha gives us a rundown on her journey to becoming the head at the CTF, what her vision is for the Colorado Trail moving forward, all that goes into maintaining the CT and where help is most needed, and much more. We also chat a bit about the role mountain biking plays into sustaining many trails throughout Colorado, what her top advice is to aspiring adventurers - coming from the perspective of an adventure and life coach, and a fuck marry kill of the sections of the Colorado Trail. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by fellow Goldenite, Andrew Terrill. Starting in 1997, Andrew walked more than 7,000 miles from the southernmost point of Italy to northern Norway, an 18-month journey across the wild parts of Europe. Needless to say, learning about this unique and fascinating trek is the focus of today's chat, as we learn what inspired Andrew to take on this route that no one had ever done previously, how he was received by locals throughout his journey, standout stories from his adventure- including running into the Italian mafia, his favorite stretches of trail, and how this journey helped him overcome his social anxiety. This hike is unlike anything we've ever featured on the podcast, and we think you'll really enjoy learning more about Andrew's story.  We wrap the show with news of a giveaway The Trek is hosting, featuring nearly $15,000 worth of backpacking gear, what our "liked it before it was cool" brags are, the Triple Crown of things that are the modern-day cigarette, and an epic listener email on the legality of stabbing people who enter your tent. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Matteo Volpi, the CEO of Volpi Outdoor Gear, the Mexico-based UL gear company.  We talk about what it's like to run a cottage gear company out of Mexico, a country without much of a long-distance backpacking culture.  We learn about what goes into starting and running a new business, how he designs the products he uses and sells, the challenges of managing a team, and much more.  We also talk about Matteo's hikes on the PCT and Colorado Trail and his love affair with backpacking in the US. We wrap the show with a brief overview (and hopefully some foreshadowing) of the UK's 230-mile Cape Wrath Trail, the Triple Crown of activities that aren't but feel like sports, and some further education on the subject of real people who exist that don't have internal monologues who are real people that really exist. Guess what y'all? This is the 20th episode of Girl Gotta Hike the Podcast, whoop – whoop! It seems like with every new episode and every new interview, this podcast actually inspires me to want to get outside and adventure more, and I hope that it's been doing the same for you! On this landmark episode, I go for a day hike in Denver with long-distance backpacker, author, fellow podcaster, and fellow New York State native, Juliana Chauncey, trail name, Chaunce. Many of you may recognize Juliana's voice as the co-host of Backpacker Radio, the crème-de-la-crème of backpacking podcasts. Juliana's been hosting BPR alongside my long-time trail buddy, Zack “Badger” Davis, ever since its inception, 4 years ago. But she's been a part of the greater theTrek.co family for even longer, when, in 2017, she became the popular backpacking website's first vlogging contributor during her Pacific Crest Trail thru-hike.  Post PCT, Juliana's gone on to traverse the Appalachian Trail, the Colorado Trail, and the John Muir Trail, among others, and has kept herself busy in non-hiking-seasons by editing videos, writing a guidebook, raising Harper, (her cutie-pie Australian Shepherd), and oh yeah, keeping down a 9 to 5.  Throughout the episode, we talk about how she got interested in the outdoors to begin with, what brought her to Denver, how she wrote her book, “Hiking From Home: A Long Distance Hiking Guide for Family and Friends,” at a Starbucks in just one month, and a new podcast project she's got coming our way, which, let me tell you, sounds like it's going to be nothing short of  amazing! Useful links:Gossamer Gear Discount — use code “GIRLGOTTAHIKEGOSSAMER” for 15% off your first purchase at GossamerGear.comLink here to check out GG's Vagabond Jet Backpack @juliana_chauncey on Instagram@juliana_chauncey on TikTokHiking From Home: A Long Distance Hiking Guide for Family and Friends on AmazonBackpacker RadiotheTrek.coWilliam F. What does one eat on a backpacking trip?  It may seem like a simple question with an equally simple answer.  But dig a bit beneath the surface and, you'll quickly learn there's more nuance than you might originally think.  Not only do we get a taste of what goes into a day's menu for our hiker trash, but we also learn how their tastes have evolved while on trail, the much-anticipated Hiker Hunger- the point at which a trekker's stomach evolves into a bottomless pit, and general advice for how they go about thinking about their diets overall.  Check out Appalachian Trials and Pacific Crest Trials. In today's episode we hear from: Jeff "Link" Podmayer Juli "M8" Wolter Laura Waltrous Natalie "Ibex" Parker Monica "Moss" Aguilar Henri "Rooster" de la Vega [divider] Have any praise, questions, praise, comments, praise, or praise for Trail Correspondents? THE POX and PUSS PODCAST : An Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiker Experience

Hey. How are you doing these days? Did you hear that the Appalachian Trail is kinda closed? We figured if the AT is closed, we'll talk about other stuff right now. Plus we heard that Quarantine Podcasts are so hot right now, so we thought we'd jump on the bandwagon. We know this is a short episode, but we have at least one more coming out later this week. Stay safe and wash your damn hands!

Here it is…the final chapter in our 2016 Trail Days Interviews series. This time we have a quick discussion with Asiago about just how difficult it can be to get to Erie, PA. We talk about how disappointing “short cuts” are sometimes. Unfortunately, it was a short interview. So we dug deep into the Pox & Puss hard drives and wound up coming back with something even OLDER than these 2016 interviews. This segment was originally buried because the experience was too fresh and depressing. At the end of this episode we finally share our recounting of the 2013 Thru-Hiker Parade Tragedy. What questions would you have if you were about to go on your first ever overnight backpacking trip in the woods? Join Green Giant and Voldemort in the studio with Daniel Pitts, mailman, juggler, balloon animal maker. Daniel has done lots of interesting things, but he still hasn't slept in a tent. He'll ask us what to expect and we'll help him (and you!) plan that first overnight hike.  This special episode is the first in a series. Over the next few weeks we'll go on location to get geared up, and then take that gear out and put it (and Daniel) to the test!

Join Megan and me for a conversation with Scott Herriott. Scott, whose trail name is Squatch, is an outdoorsman, comedian, documentarian and noted Bigfoot enthusiast. Scott does an amazing job of describing a personal encounter while also remaining open to poking fun at some of the sillier aspects unique to the Bigfoot hunter subculture. He does this in a respectably skeptical way which entertains true believers and nay-sayers alike, and we are lucky to have him join us today.    Links mentioned in this episode:    SquatchFilms.com The BigFoot Show on iTunes Disney World Inside Out on YouTube Old Pictures of Elephants The Bibbulmun Track Stories from the Trail Facebook Page

Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

Zach Davis didn't hike a long-distance trail until 2011, yet he was intuitively aware of the need to prepare himself mentally for the hike. Establishing his "why" allowed him to be ready for the problems that he would inevitably encounter on the trail. The fact that he contracted West Nile Disease and carried it until the end of the trail is further testimony to his desire to fulfill his goal. When Zach returned from the AT, he wrote his best-selling book, Appalachian Trials to assist other hikers in the hiker mindset. He was already a prolific blogger, but used his website to, first, sell more books and, second, to turn his hiking influence into a business. Zach's commonsense approach to hiking resonates with Steve in their conversation. You can find Zach at any of these places.
