Applying Buddha's Teachings in day-to-day life. "World peace begins with individual peace", "The way to attain harmony and unity is serving the community", "The wheel of karma is inexorable; the best way out of it is to do one's dharma diligently". In this manner, Mr RJ Rathnakar, the Managing Trustee of Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, for over 55 mins, explained the nuances of Buddhism through the teachings of Swami to the hundreds of devotees from Zone 4 and 5 of Sri Sathya Sai Global Council who had gathered in Prasanthi Nilayam to celebrate Buddha Poornima in the Divine Presence of Bhagawan. Interlaced with many profound and humorous anecdotes and insights, Mr Rathnakar dwelt on the themes of "Buddham Sharanam Gachchami, Dhammam Sharanam Gachchami, Sangham Sharanam Gachchami" in an engaging manner, driving home powerful takeaways that devotees can practice in their daily lives to experience inner happiness and always remain connected to Bhagawan. This Satsang is being shared to help everyone in their spiritual journey.

As you may recall, we began the last episode by saying that we are deeply involved with preparations for the release of our next project, “The NeuroHaronic Method.” As a short introduction to it, I discussed two critical times in my life that helped lay the foundations for my lifelong study of personal growth. These were the metaphysical events that surrounded the sudden death of my father followed by my unexpected introduction to the idea that there has been a deep level of wisdom that has manifested itself in every human culture since the beginning of civilization. This remarkable intelligence is commonly called the “Wisdom of the Ages” and is by no means limited to ancient times.             Now, in this episode, we're going to complete that part of the story and then we will go into a deeper overview of the “NeuroHarmonic Method” itself. Again, the purpose of all of this is to present you with ideas that you may find useful as you continue your own path of personal growth, which in my view, is a journey that we are all on in one way or another, because the innate desire for real growth is deeply tied to authentic human happiness. Some of us have begun to realize that we are on this quest and some of us haven't. Yet. I ended the last episode with a short description of the course that I took in college that was simply called – World Religions, which started to open my eyes to the prospect of evolving my own consciousness. Prior to that, I never even considered the idea. The next important thing that happened to me in this regard took place in the early part of 1968 when I, along with the 70 million other baby boomers I came in with, heard the news that the Beatles had travelled to India to study meditation. Besides being a major global media event, they were actually making some kind of a statement about inner growth, which was in absolute congruence with the music that they were making at the time. Not only were they deeply involved with the process of changing Western Culture, by extension they were also affecting the entire world.   Personally, since my generation first came under their spell in 1964, I basically did whatever they did. I mirrored their hair style and eventually their drug use, along with their overall counterculture understandings. So, because they started studying with a teacher known as the Maharishi, by early 1970, I had gone to his outpost in Philadelphia and started doing what is known as Transcendental Meditation, which was a form of mantra meditation. Of course I wasn't what you might call a “sincere seeker,” I was still just a devotee of John, Paul, George, and Ringo. Still, I practiced that form on and off for about a year but I stayed pretty much on the surface. Eventually though, along with the changing times, my quest for inner truth got deeper and I ran into a rather profound form of meditation that finally began to melt the inner ice that had frozen my insides for so many years.   Since then, I've explored and experienced several dozen other approaches as well, including some rather advanced mindfulness modalities, but that one form of meditation that I started back then, has continued to be the basic foundation to my overall approach.   Again, this is just some background to set the stage for the emergence and creation of the “NeuroHarmonic Method” and in that vein, something critical happened to me about ten years ago, when I started to learn about of a certain set of understandings that was becoming popular among some brilliant neuroscientists and psychotherapists. They had begun to examine the effects of meditation, contemplation, and mindfulness on the neurology of the people who regularly practice these methods and their findings were astounding. This was especially true regarding something called neuroplasticity, which is our brain's remarkable ability to physically transform itself, a truly amazing feat which it does constantly, The implications of these neurological validations of the positive effects of certain methods of personal growth are massive because they confirm a major idea that we can each wholeheartedly embrace and that is that we are not stuck! We're not stuck with the negativity we carry. We're not stuck with where we are at all, and most importantly, we are not even stuck with who we are. We can positively reshape the way our brain works, which changes the way we see ourselves and our lives in the world, which basically changes everything. Again, we were born with this ability and we still have it. So, to sum up this part of the story, this whole world of personal growth is truly a game changer and I've been lucky enough to have been involved with it for close to fifty-five years. And I'll add with all humility, that there is a decent chance that I might be starting to scratch the actual surface of it! Now to make a very long story very short, this is, in essence what has led to the development of the NeuroHarmonic Method. So let's move on to a fairly quick overview of it, which I hope you'll find inspiring. It has emerged over what has basically been a lifetime of experience, study, and inner exploration. You've been hearing echoes of it in some podcast episodes, woven into stories and reflections, and maybe you've even experienced an occasional “aha” moment from some of its information. But now, I'd like to offer a fuller view of what it is, and why I believe it may hold real value for people in all walks and stages of life. Again, the NeuroHarmonic Method was not born in a lab or a university classroom, although its roots certainly drink from the well of neuroscience. Nor did it spring fully formed from a single moment of insight. It came together gradually, over many decades, from lived experience, long meditation, and a commitment to understanding both the workings of the human mind and the deeper currents of consciousness that flow beneath the surface. Also, as I've mentioned in a few earlier episodes, I've spent over five decades of serious study with a talented and deeply profound meditation teacher whose work reaches beyond theory and technique to a direct experience of an extrtemely joyful, yet profoundly peaceful state of awareness.    At the same time, I've been a lifelong student of human intelligence as it manifests throughout the brain and nervous system—how it functions, how it breaks down, and how, under the right conditions, it can harmonize with its own, inherently higher states of being. The NeuroHarmonic Method lives at the intersection of those two streams: ancient spiritual insight and modern neuroscience, so in a broader context, you could say that this is “Where Science Meets the Soul.” So, essentially, what ss NeuroHarmonics? At its heart, the NeuroHarmonic Method is about attunement. It's an easy, yet practical way of harmonizing your brain and nervous system so you can resonate with your own higher frequencies of truth, clarity, and love. Just as a musical instrument can be tuned to produce harmonious sound, so too can the mind-body system be gently brought into alignment with its natural, unburdened state. But here's the key: we're not just talking about mental wellness or stress reduction, though these often happen along the way. This is about a truly transformational alignment. The NeuroHarmonics process tunes your entire being—your breath, thoughts, feelings, attention, and even your past—into coherence with the deeper intelligence that animates life itself. This is not a belief system. It's a method of practice. This is something that you do, and the results are experiential. Let's start with the breath, which is appropriate because that's where life began for each one of us – it started when we took in our first breath, and obviously it ends when we breathe our last one out. But the power of the breath goes beyond even that. The breath is the portal to the animating force of life within, and naturally, breath is central to the NeuroHarmonic Method. Not just as a relaxation tool, but as a living bridge—a thread that connects your conscious awareness with the ever-present rhythm of your existence. And we're not just speaking of oxygen exchange here. It's something subtler. The breath becomes a way of remembering presence itself. It becomes the moment-by-moment invitation to return—to come back from the endless distractions of the mind and rest again in the comforting reality of the fact that you are alive. Through this breath-centered awareness, the nervous system can begin to down-regulate from stress, anxiety, and hypervigilance. But even more than that, it can begin to entrain with something greater. It can tune in to what we call our own NeuroHarmonic Frequencies, which are states of being that are marked by deep calm, clear focus, inner joy, and spiritual receptivity. Now let's turn our attention to our overall consciousness itself and look at what we call The Jumping Monkey and the Silent Signal. In the podcast episodes, you've heard me talk about the “jumping monkey” of the ordinary mind. This refers to that incessant inner narrator who's always leaping from one concern to the next, dragging us along like an annoying, impatient child in a toy store. But even beyond that, this is the foundational source of our nagging self-sabotage, which is at the very root of most of our issues. The NeuroHarmonic Method doesn't fight this monkey part of the mind. It doesn't suppress or judge it. Instead, it re-educates its attention. We learn to feel the difference between the monkey's chatter and the silent signal that's always present beneath it. That signal is often felt as a quiet invitation toward peace. Sometimes it's experienced as an inner warmth. Other times, as clarity, lightness, or a kind of gravitational pull toward stillness. That signal is always there. It is part of our higher mind and what changes is our availability to receive it. Critically NeuroHarmonics trains us to step into that availability. The next part of this quick examination deals with life's difficulties, disappointments, and challenges. Now for me, I don't need to pretend that my life has been particularly easy. Of course, everything is relative, but I've certainly had my fair share of significant difficulties. As Bob Dylan once wrote “If you don't believe there's price for this sweet paradise,  just remind me to show you the scars.” To one degree or another, we all know what he's talking about there. For me, there were countless times when things fell apart just as they were coming together. Interlaced with periods of fatigue, heartbreak, and confusion,  and accompanied by that certain exhaustion that comes not just from effort, but from the friction of experiencing constantly unfulfilled potential.  At times, my life felt like I was living an enforced version of that famous Winston Churchill quote, “Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.” But NeuroHarmonics isn't about denying or bypassing life's challenges. It's about metabolizing them by finding the harmonic resonance within every event, even the ones that threaten to undo us. Because even the most painful experiences contain higher, hidden frequencies which you can learn how to resonate with, if you learn how to listen carefully enough. So, this is an ideal place for us to stop. We'll continue along these lines in the coming episodes because in reality, we're just getting warmed up. As always, keep your eyes, mind, and heart open, and let's get together in the next one.

The Able McLaughlins by Margaret Wilson audiobook. The Able McLaughlins won the Pulitzer Prize for a novel in 1924 in Margaret Wilson's debut work. Aptly described as 'Little House on the Prairie - but for adults' the novel follows a group of Scottish families who pioneer the Iowa prairie in the 1860’s. The main storyline concerns Wully, the eldest McLaughlin son, who returns home from the Civil War to find that his sweetheart, Chirstie, has experienced an unspeakable tragedy that will profoundly affect the couple's lives. Their story is one of shame and honor, secrets and guilt, fear and loathing, revenge and forgiveness. But perhaps the stars of the novel are the strong older women such as Wully’s mother, Isobel, whose love and matriarchal strength keeps the family together as well as Chirstie’s stepmother, Barbara, who finds ways to make her good-for-nothing husband keep his promises. Interlaced with the plots are richly detailed descriptions of frontier prairie life, the love that families share, and the relationships within the Scottish immigrant community. Coffee and A Lion Tracker's Guide to Life is how I started 2023. This was my second time through this little gem of pithy prose. The PremiseBoyd Varty grew up on a game preserve in South Africa. His grandfather converted a bankrupt cattle ranch into a lion-hunting enterprise. Spoiler alert: the lions were eating the cattle. His father would do the right thing and bring it back to its natural state and a safari operation. Boyd would learn the art of tracking here.Boyd brings a refreshing look at life through the eyes of a tracker. Interlaced with the culture of the Shangaan, Boyd takes us through a day tracking a lion. His two mentors, Alex and Ren, provide context, wisdom, and a view of life through two men deeply connected to nature. For the metaphors, I'll keep coming back to this one. Excerpts like this that make it worth it:“Ren lives outside the deceptions of modern life. Its structured psychological outlook has not affected him, and I know that he is a living clue to a different way of being. He doesn't concern himself with the attainment of status or wealth. He doesn't worry about his security in the future or his position within a social group. He doesn't talk about politics or worry that he isn't doing enough. To him, time is not money. Productivity is not a reflection of his value. He considers treadmills ridiculous. When it's time to work, he works. When it's time to rest, he rests.”It's short, only 90 pages. A lifetime of advice in its brevity, like this: “Track what makes you feel good and bring more of it into your life. Notice what makes you feel lousy and do less of it.”More of my Favorites“I tend to just accept what I see. Ren always looks closer, he always asks why. He has a gift for examining the wallpaper of life.”Why do the elephants eat in the morning? The answer is simple, but that's not the entire answer. Boyd accepts the first answer while Ren, his mentor, keeps asking why. There is more than what we see on the surface. "You can't think your way to a calling. Finding what is uniquely yours requires more than rationality."This stings a little. For rationality, what are we talking about? The rationality of comparison? What did your parents want? What society tells you is right? What role do you think you play for others? You won't find your calling in a pro/con list. It's emotional, not logical."We live with our attention directed outward. We focus on the social cues of our culture. We look to others to define our path and value, and purpose. We lose ourselves in shoulds."I talked about warriors and how they look in. Boyd is saying the same. Don't look to society to define your path. If you do, you might find yourself walking down the wrong path. Don't forget: just because you can win the game doesn't mean you should play. "We must learn to read the subtle tracks of the body, the way it relaxes and opens when something feels right, the contraction and tightness when we are not where we are meant to be."Perhaps my favorite, I feel this deeply. You know when something feels right and when it doesn't. How often do we not listen to our bodies while our minds are wrapped up in rationalizations? Or fear? Or competition? "I don't know where I'm going, but I know exactly how to get there, whispers the wild self. Learn to be natural."Instinct gets us to our feet. As toddlers, we stumble around exploring while our dotting parents, if lucky, keep an eye out. Our days are filled with eating, napping, and - well, the rest. Our early time at school let us finger-paint our joyful hearts away. We do what feels right, and at some point, the natural path gets supplanted by something else. Maybe there is a way to find our way back to finger painting, kindness, and homemade cookies. "I remain deeply convinced that a person who tracks down an authentic life opens up possibilities for themselves, their family, and their larger community. In these times, as the planet screams at us to reimagine our way of life, these new possibilities are deeply important."Maybe this is what matters. What would the world be like if all 8 billion of us could do what we are best in the world at and love? Easy for me to say as I sit in this fancy chair with all my privilege. There is work I have to do to track down the authentic me. I'm incredibly lucky I can even consider this, and as such, don't I have an obligation to act? Why I Love It? The sketches, prose, and being easily consumable make it one of my favorites. Boyd's writing is punchy but beautiful at the right moments - like nature in that way. I felt like I was hiding behind the tree with Boyd, Alex, and Ren as the bull elephant charged the air around us with his presence. "We must leave the safety of the village and venture out onto the trail of something wild and uncertain and as yet undefined. We must live on that trail, propelled forward by a set of clues only you will recognize by the aliveness they bring out in you. You must teach yourself to see your track.”You won't find the tracks sitting at home, and sometimes you will lose the track. When that happens, return to the last track. Begin again. Losing the track is often more important. Take care, friends. This is a public episode. Dami Roelse is a certified life coach, writer, and retired mental health provider. Born in Holland, Dami has traveled the world extensively, lived on different continents, and has learned to use her travel as inspiration for living. As she entered the 3rd phase of life Dami lost her life partner. She went for a long walk in the Himalayas to escape the reality of life without her life partner. This trek in a desolate wilderness at a high altitude gave her back her sense of belonging. You can read about Dami's spiritual quest and trek in the Himalayas in her book: “Fly Free, a memoir of love, loss, and walking the path”. Since then Dami uses long-distance hiking and backpacking as a means to deepen her connection with nature and the universe. Her book, "Walking Gone Wild, How to lose your age on the trail”, explores and explains walking, hiking, and backpacking as a means of re-invigorating life for women as they age. Interlaced with stories of real women who have built confidence through walking, it presents a new model of aging with vitality, grace, and a deepened connection to life. Aside from trekking in the Himalayas and Morocco, walking and hiking in Europe, Dami has hiked more than 2500 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in the last 9 years. Dami writes about the benefits of walking, hiking, and backpacking for women50plus.  Dami shares the following Dami didn't start walking serious distances until the age of 65!  For her 65th birthday, Dami decided to “do something big”  like walk a length of the Pacific Crest Trail in Oregon which is the state she lived in at the time.  This summer  2022, Dami finished the last piece of the Pacific Crest Trail, 2,650 miles!  The entire journey took ten years and in the last stretch this summer she completed 180 miles at 75 years young! At the beginning of her journey, Dami had lost her husband and felt a bit disoriented and was wondering “who am I” and “what am I doing with my life”.  She was close to retirement. The trail gave her time to think and it was out on the trail that she discovered who she was.  She felt connected when she was out in nature.  For Dami, she found her place amongst the old-growth trees.   Dami says that her purpose is not to hike long distances but to really know herself and increase her awareness.  It's also to share the possibility of how to do that with other people, especially women. She enjoys coaching women on their “third phase of life”.  Through posting her travels within her Facebook group and website Dami has been an inspiration for women of all ages to do the same! When we get older we get set in our ways and it often becomes difficult to get out of our comfort zone and try new things.  Dami encourages us to go where we fear to live.  She shares how she was afraid of the desert and how a walk helped her to conquer that fear.  Break what you are fearful of and try it in smaller bite-size pieces to get a sense of what to expect and build your self-confidence!   Dami's book,  Walking Gone Wild,  shared stories about women who started walking and what it did for them in their journey.  She shares their stories and their “why” for walking.   Walking Women Fifty Plus Facebook group has over 3000 followers who are sharing their stories and offering encouragement and tips!   Dami shares some of her favorite hikes and the advantages of using walking poles. Why Listen: Today's interview is a different story than I've heard before. Because Justin didn't found a company, he was working at a company called Intuit, getting a lot of experience in product innovation. He was contacted by a company right when he was starting his entrepreneurial journey about having the possibility of him taking over as CEO. It's a path that I haven't heard of a lot. He's done well at tripling the size of this company in those two years. Even though at that time the pandemic started and he lost a third of his revenue overnight. I love this conversation. Keep an ear out for when he talks about it. He took action while on active duty, earning his MBA and volunteering so that when he got out of the military, his resume had mostly non-military items, which was an impressive idea. I learned a lot from Justin; he seems like a natural coach, and I'm personally looking forward to keeping in contact with him and continuing to learn from his example of leadership.  About Justin: Justin Wells is the CEO at Interlaced.io. It's a 50-person IT services company in San Diego. They provide premium IT managed services, essentially enterprise-grade IT programs and fractional IT departments with Apple Cloud and networking expertise. Justin started at the Naval Academy, after which he served in the Navy for ten years as a Naval Aviator. He earned his MBA from UC San Diego, focusing on innovation strategy, business development, and growth partnership. Interlaced.io was founded in 2009. Justin took over as CEO two years ago, tripling the company's size over that time through organic growth and a recent acquisition.

Probably Psalm 80 was written by Asaphite singers at another time of national disaster—when the Assyrians captured the northern kingdom, destroyed its capital, and exiled many of its people. The shock felt by the godly remnant in Judah must have been considerable. It accounts for the refrain, “Restore us, O God” (Ps. 80:3, 7, 19; cf. v. 14).Perhaps the most striking feature of this psalm is the peculiar use it makes of the extended vine imagery (Ps. 80:8–18):(1) We have often seen Israel portrayed as a vine: see, for instance, the meditation for May 7 (on Isa. 5). In the most dramatic of these passages, Israel is a vine that God carefully planted and nurtured, but sadly it produced only bad fruit. The vine ultimately proved so disappointing that in due course God resolved to destroy it.(2) But here the emphasis is not on the terrible quality of the vine's fruit (though that is presupposed), but on the wretched condition of the vine now that the Lord himself has broken down the protecting wall he had built around it. God himself brought the vine out of Egypt, planted it, nurtured it, and watched it spread from the (Mediterranean) Sea to the (Euphrates) River (Ps. 80:8–11). “Why have you broken down its walls so that all who pass by pick its grapes?” (80:12). Even the wild beasts from the forest trample it and ravage it (Ps. 80:13).(3) So the appeal is that God would have compassion on his own vine. Without dwelling on why God broke down the protecting wall—though Asaph recognizes that it is God's smoldering anger (Ps. 80:4), God's righteous rebuke (Ps. 80:16)—the psalmist makes a frankly emotional appeal to God to protect the vine that he himself has nurtured and protected: “Watch over this vine, the root your right hand has planted” (Ps. 80:14–15).(4) Interlaced with this theme is a reference to the “son” God raised up for himself (Ps. 80:15). The Hebrew word can refer to a branch or a bough (as in Gen. 49:22), but in this poem it is also preparing the way for Psalm 80:17. Probably in the first instance we are to detect a reference to Israel, a reference stemming from Exodus 4:22: “Israel is my firstborn son, and I told you, ‘Let my son go, so he may worship me.' ” The psalmist pleads for compassion for God's “son.” Even in verse 17 the “son of man” and the man at God's right hand, i.e., God's firstborn, envisage, in the first instance, Israel. In the larger horizon, the ultimate answer to these petitions of Asaph would come when the true vine (John 15), the ultimate Son of Man, emerged from Israel. This podcast is designed to be used alongside TGC's Read The Bible initiative (TGC.org/readthebible). The podcast features devotional commentaries from D.A. Carson's book For the Love of God (vol. 2) that follow the M'Cheyne Bible reading plan.

So That You May Have Life John 20:19-31 Will Ed Green—Sunday, April 11th, 2021—Foundry United Methodist Church Good morning, friends. My name is Will Ed Green, and I serve as one of Foundry’s Associate Pastors and our Director of Discipleship. As we move into a time of reflecting on Scripture together we are so glad you’re with us. For those of you who are just tuning in, you’ll find links for fully engaging in our service in our Facebook and YouTube comments or on our website www.foundryumc.org. If you are in need ASL interpretation, we invite you to join us at www.foundryumc.org/asl. So I want to begin this morning by talking about the “Apophthegmata Patrum,”—no, that wasn’t a sneeze, I said “apophtegmata patrum.” They are the recorded sayings of a group of monks and nuns known as the Desert Mothers and Fathers. They lived in caves, mud huts, and even holes they dug in the ground in the deserts of Egypt, Syria, and Palestine; sometimes in small communities but, more often than not, alone. There, in the desert, with the busyness of life and the clutter of consumption cleared away, they embarked upon a bold endeavor: through prayer and contemplation, to live more humanely, to become—in modeling their life after Jesus—more human, and thus to become truly alive in the love of God. The “Apophthegmata”are snippets of stories and parables—preserved from the their own self-reflection, or offered to their disciples and visitors, that often begin with the question: “Amma, Abba, give me a word.” Their responses are not theological treatises or Christian self-help one-liners. They are plain and practical; unconcerned with right belief or theology and focused on matters of the heart. This simple wisdom cleaves performative spirituality and self-righteous theology from the practical matters of daily discipleship.  And because of this, they force us to address the ways what we profess is actually transforming our hearts and lives. Something John Wesley might have called “personal holiness” or “sanctification.” During these Great 50 Days—or the 50 days between Easter and Pentecost—our new sermon series invites us, like the Desert Mothers and Fathers, to focus our attention on the work of being and becoming alive. To receive in the fullness of its power the hope of the resurrection we proclaim. To embody, not just in right belief, but in the daily rhythms of our lives the freedom and abundance of life available when we live as those who believe that Jesus IS risen. So now, as we turn to the words of the Living Word, Jesus, and ask of them as those who traveled to the desert so long ago: “Give us a word” let us pray: Order our lives in your Word, O God, that everything we do may bear witness to your resurrection life.  Order our words in YOUR word, O God, that everything we say may bring life into a worry-weary world desperately in need of hope. Breathe the anointing of your Holy Spirit upon all those in the sound of my voice, that in this sacred space we now share together we might be transformed by your Living Word, and in that transformation might take our place in kin-dom work to which you’ve called us. And now may the words of this preacher, faulty and fleeting though they may be, fade into the background of the Word which you would have us receive this day. Amen. I want to begin this morning by acknowledging  that is a sermon about Jesus’ body and our bodies and the way they experience and express trauma. There may be moments when previous experiences of your own trauma rise to conscious awareness, so pay attention to your body. If you find yourself feeling anxious step away or pause and take a break, please know that’s ok. Today’s reading begins with the disciples in the throes of collective trauma. Their doors are barred in fear of what terror may yet occur. Just days before they witnessed their rabbi ruthlessly murdered, were denied by the disappearance of his body the familiar rhythms and rituals of mourning, and are certainly still trying to make sense of his promised resurrection in light of all these things. Suddenly, a surprisingly fleshy Jesus—given the doors to this kiki are locked tight—appears in the midst of their uncertainty, fear, and doubt. Showing his wounds. Speaking of peace. Breathing upon them. And it’s the revelation of his resurrected and scarred body—the text tells us—through which they see and know him for who he is, finally able to rejoice. But Thomas isn’t there to see the wounds and recognize the resurrection. And when told of what happened he insists that his belief will come only when he’s able to touch the wounds, feel the scars, and grasp hold of this body which held the trauma they’d all shared. When Thomas arrives, we’re not told whether or not he actually digs his hand into Jesus’ wounds, but it’s clear he’s given the chance to. And in this moment of direct confrontation with embodied sorrow and suffering—not just Jesus’ own, but that of the community who loved him— Thomas proclaims, “My Lord and My God,” finally able to see through those wounds the full promise of God’s resurrection power. John’s Gospel is the only one that makes the wounds of the resurrected Jesus central to the story, mixing the past pain and trauma of the crucifixion with the present rejoicing in and hope for resurrection. I find it fascinating that these encounters are precipitated by recognition of Jesus’ wounds. It’s not his miraculous appearance among them, not his face or voice, but his wounds that confirm his identity.  John’s Jesus isn’t a face-tuned, blemish-less, social media ready Savior fresh off a few days of rejuvenating rest in the tomb, but one who bears the marks of the cross and yet lives. Over the centuries we’ve conveniently made this a story about Thomas’s doubt. We love the image of one who must root around in the wounds of Jesus to achieve satisfaction—perhaps because we feel the need to excuse our own doubt or to satisfy ourselves with the thought that at least we’ve got more faith than THAT. But this reading also provides a convenient way to ignore the confronting an uncomfortable truth: resurrection doesn’t guarantee instantaneous healing. When the story is more about Thomas’ spiritual faults than wounds he insists on touching, we get to ignore that that resurrected Jesus still bears the marks of the tomb. The life he offers isn’t one in which our past trauma and sorrow is expunged. Instead, John’s resurrection body forces us to confront how they inform and are part of life. Healing cannot be separated from suffering. Resurrection cannot be separated from death. Let me pause and be clear here: this is not a sermon about redemptive suffering. As a pastor I wholeheartedly reject the idea that suffering is a somehow necessary part of the way we grow in faith or love of God and one another. This is bad theology—no tea, no shade, Paul…but maybe a little. And it’s the root of so many excuses for the continued mass incarceration, torture, and violence perpetuated against our black and brown siblings, too often one which traps women in cycles of abuse and neglect in the name of  “faithfulness,” and is regularly used against my queer siblings as they are subjected to theologies of self-loathing and the horrors of conversion therapy. But willingness to erase Jesus’ wounds and focus solely on Thomas’s doubt is dangerous. The wounds, and the pain they embody, can’t be overlooked. Far too many people are taught a theology of comparative suffering, where ‘good Christians’ are taught to minimize their suffering—or the suffering of others— because clearly other people have it worse than “you.” We are taught that our doubt, disbelief, heartache and hurt are an expression of faithlessness in God, that these don’t get to exist in tandem with life in a post-Easter world. Recent developments in psychobiology have given us a deeper understanding of how trauma impacts our brains and bodies. By trauma, I mean any experience which causes acute anxiety, fear, rage, or grief and that activates our desire to “fight or flee”. When this happens, a part of our brain, sometimes called the “lizard brain.” kicks into gear.  This ancient, built-in defense mechanism is tied directly our primary life systems, and can activate them before we consciously pick up on a threat. All of us, I’m sure, can remember moments of acute distress when our heart was pounding out of our chest, our breathing shallow, our palms sweaty, or our stomachs churning. Evolutionarily, these responses are meant to keep us alive until we can escape and process our experience. But what happens, when like the disciples, we encounter grief we can’t process or explain. A tomb left empty, holding more questions than answers. Night after night spent with the door tightly barred with no end to the threat in sight? Significant or repeated experiences of trauma, as author Bessel van der Kolk writes in “The Body Keeps the Score,” alter our perception of reality. We get stuck in the lizard brains, constantly reacting to something which our conscious brain might otherwise recognize as innocuous or inane.  Phrases like “Per my previous email” or “Can we talk?” can send us into fits of rage.  News notifications or unexpected phone calls can leave us panicked and breathless. Left unchecked, these trauma wounds impact nearly every aspect of our lives. We become stuck in cycles of self-sabotage; often in trying to prevent the threat of future trauma, inadvertently causing the very thing we fear.  In real moments of panic or danger, we become unable to distinguish those who want to help from those trying to cause harm, leaving us isolated and suspicious. These repeated trauma reactions build a new kind of knowledge in our bodies, changing the way we exist in and share space with others. Toxic anxiety—or prolonged periods of unabated anxiety—can kill us. Over time, our lizard brain’s over activation of our bodily systems can cause us to gain weight, makes hearts and arteries age abnormally, or our immune systems fail. We brains become so accustomed to our anxiety or the threat of trauma that we unconsciously create a world in which we constantly feel or create it because it’s the only way we know how to live.  One study comparing patients with untreated or significant past trauma to those without it, found that the brains of persons with PTSD literally shut down areas which control and help us define our sense of self in proximity to others. In an effort to erase their experience of trauma, our brains adapt, shutting off the parts of our brain that help us know perceive the world around us and know ourselves outside of our anxiety or fear of future pain or grief.           It’s no wonder it took Jesus miraculously appearing in their midst and revealing his wounds, rather than the words of Mary who encountered him just before, to recognize him. And that was just three days later. Thomas spent another week—another week!—living in that terror and fear. Jesus wasn’t the only one wounded in the story. He was just the only one who’s wounds we see. If you’ve ever read J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, you might remember that goblins are sneaky, burrowing creatures who are terrified of light. Under the cover of darkness however, they leave their caves to wreak havoc and violence on unsuspecting victims, pillaging and plundering everything they can take. I have this image of our unnamed, un-healed trauma operating a little like these goblins. Our trauma goblins burrow just beneath the surface of our conscious awarenness and, hidden by our fear and shame about facing them, co-opt and corrupt our ability to distinguish between despair and hope, life and death, friend and foe. Left unchecked, they impact everyone around us. They change our ability to listen and respond to others. Our capacity to trust and show up authentically, to love and take worthwhile risks. They pillage the wealth of our relationships, our good intentions, and giftedness and in their wake often cause lasting harm to those we love.. But much  like Tolkein’s goblins are terrified of light, of being seen, our trauma goblins lose their agency over us when exposed to the light of conscious awareness. Trauma therapists now understand that the long-term trauma can only be dealt with in our bodies. Employing a variety of mind-body techniques like deep breathing, massage, yoga, and meditation allows survivors of long-term trauma and toxic anxiety to begin to understand how their trauma impacts their bodies, and through their bodies to begin learning what it means to regain control of their lives. By addressing the often-unconscious ways our anxiety and trauma is manifested in our bodies, we’re able to break its control over us. Perhaps this is why it took the wounded AND resurrected body of Christ to break the the coopting cycle of the disciples’ anxiety, fear, and self-doubt. Breathing new life and strength into bodies weary from trauma that never seems to end. Showing the wounds in all their pain and the promise that that there was yet life beyond them. And when that trauma misshaped and Mal-informed Thomas’s perception of himself and others, Jesus extended his hands, wounds and all, without reproach or shame, allowing Thomas to touch the source of his pain so that he might be free to live beyond its control. In her book Resurrecting Wounds, Shelley Rambo writes: “The truth of the resurrection conveyed through the symbols of [Jesus’] scars is that these textures (grief and joy, pain and pleasure) will always be present in life, often simultaneously. Interlaced with joy and pain, a life can be marked as holy even in all this ambiguity.” Jesus shows us how gentle acknowledgment and awareness of our trauma helps us recognize that God is present both in suffering and healing, in doubt and belief; liberating us from the lie that our past trauma and present wounded-ness is all there is to our story. The wounded and resurrected savior bears witness to the real resurrection promise: not that we will always be ok, or skate past suffering in life through slights of hand like comparative suffering, not some glorified, resurrected future free of all our past trauma and grief, but the freedom to see written in our marks our past trauma leaves that while life guarantees suffering and loss, God guarantees life despite of and beyond it. Social worker and author Resmaa Menakem notes in his book on racial trauma in America “My Grandmother’s Hands” that, “…we tend to think of healing as something binary: either we’re broken or we’re healed from that brokenness…but healing from trauma occurs [over a long time and] on a continuum.” If Thomas teaches us nothing else, he shows us that we do not need to be embarrassed or controlled our past traumas. His reach teaches us how to reject the temptations of comparative suffering, and gives us permission to be okay not being ok. To doubt. To be a hot mess express. His recognition and acclamation of the resurrection shows us that by naming our wounds they lose the power to define our experience of others and the world. In honoring our wounds,  in refusing to defer or delay our recognition of trauma, we bring into focus a reality too often denied by binary models of healing: that we can be both hurt and healing, broken and being made whole, in the tomb and yet returning to life.In that way, his demand to confront the wounds, to run his fingers over the still-fresh scars of the cruxifixion isn’t an act of doubt. But an experience of his own resurrection. And while Thomas may, in fact, offer us a lesson on doubt, he’s also showing us what it means, in light of the resurrection, to be and become alive. On my hands is a roadmap of my past only I can read. Here a deep scar, left when a frantic dash out the door pulled artwork off the wall that bit back. There an almost invisible pockmark from chicken pox long healed. Joints left crooked after broken bones, callouses left from picking up heavy things. They may not be pretty, but all those marks and scars on my hands remind me—in all their beauty and brokenness—despite it all I am still alive. Pentecost will mark the 19th anniversary of the first time I ever preached and publicly acknowledged my call to ministry. It will also mark the beginning of a profound and painful internal struggle with my God-given identity as a gay man and the ordination process of a church which actively told me that identity was incompatible with Christian teaching. There’ve been plenty of wounds along the way. Having to leave my home and family behind in order to be ordained in the church I felt called to. Living in fear of what would happen if a picture of my partner and I got posted on the wrong account or parishioners encountered me holding hands on a first date. Hiding my identity from my colleagues for fear it might be used against me in a court of…well, church law. Much like looking at my hands reminds me I'm still alive, every day I choose to name them, acknowledge, touch and know them reminds me that it’s ok that  I am healed and still healing. I am broken and almost being made whole. And that I am, in the words of that old Charles Wesley hymn, despite it all, yet alive.  The Abbas and Ammas of the desert often remark on the way has a funny way of entering in through the wounds we bear and slowly, imperceptibly, beginning the work of healing. And though I’m not sure I’ll ever stop fighting those old trauma goblins, God’s grace—new each day—gives me fresh hope that they don’t have to define what comes next. I know I don’t need to enumerate for you all the ways that we are these days, individually and collectively holding and bearing witness to trauma. But I do know that it’s okay to hold doubt in one hand and hope in the other. That in the light of the resurrection your scars and wounds aren’t proof of your failure or lack of capacity or worthlessness. No, they are proof you’re a badass. You can do and survive hard things. You already survived the worst moments of your lives. No one else has ever done that. No one else could. Best of all, I know that in the midst of all the trauma past, and all the trauma to come, we are accompanied by a Savior who’s love allows us the grace and space to know that—no matter how broken or wounded we may be—we are loved. And meets us in moments when they in all their death-dealing power threaten to overwhelm or overcome us with open arms, proclaiming peace and promising though our scars may remind us of where we’ve been, and what we’ve been through, they may inform but don’t have to dictate what comes next. I think that may be what it means to become in alive in God’s love. And, for now, at least for me, that’s resurrection enough. https://foundryumc.org/

This week during bible study, we discussed just how important forgiveness truly is. The bible teaches us to make "allowances" for one another faults. Not a single one of us are perfect. If we are going to coincide in harmony, we need to learn how to accept each other for who we are. This does mean accept sin, it simply means that we are all quirky and that is perfectly fine. The Lord loves us in spite of everything, so the least you can do is do the same for one another. Forgive yourself today because you were forgiven by Jesus. Then forgive everyone and everything else. I love you all and be blessed!   Enjoy the YouTube version here and join the family: https://youtu.be/R49y12d51AQ Click this link to download the notes from the bible study as well as the definitions: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1t38TfbzBX_KZ9JvZeUayQxaHt4O3MlJY/view?usp=sharing    Check out "Trading Faith" by Pastor Mike Todd. Barbara on "Lesson 5: Carnival of Venice (Interlaced)"When playing a song like this, I often find myself playing one string off on my right or left hand (sometimes both) because I am looking at the music. Do you have any suggestions on how not to get "lost"?James answers:Hi Barbara, good question! I second what Zsolt said and I'll add this. It sounds a bit odd, but try playing with your eyes closed! Even if that means you just memorize a small part of the piece (1 or 2 measures) and then play that part 10 times with your eyes shut. You will hear and feel things in a new way. Try it and let me know if it helps!--Catherine on "Lesson 3: Interlaced and Synchronous Arranging"How do you choose which note to insert for the interlacing accompaniment?Reply by Zsolt from Team Uketropolis on "Lesson 3: Interlaced and Synchronous Arranging"That is a great question! There are many ways - on the above example James fills the gaps with one note from the underlying harmony - usually in a way that the fill is below the melody note (which is a bit more challenging with the re-entrant tuning, so you might check out the re-entrant version of this lesson too to really get the idea). As you go along, you will see some more ways to do it.James answers:Great reply, Zsolt, I couldn't have said it better! Does clarify things, Catherine? If not, keep asking questions; we're here to help!--Catherine on "Lesson 7: Carnival of Venice (Synchronous)"James: I'm really enjoying your ukulele series. Any info on music theory is appreciated. Somewhere about ten seconds into your explanation on why chords are marked C when they're really C6 or CSUS4, my brain shut down. Do you have tutorials on straight theory for the non-musically inclined? It would be so helpful to be able to review theory on its own without having to search it out within each tutorial. Thanks so much.James answers:Hi Catherine, glad you're enjoying the lessons! There aren't any theory-only lessons in The Ukulele Way although one of the learning paths in the Navigator (https://www.uketropolis.com/navigator) has a special focus on theory. This is a topic that would be great to put out to other students on the Community page to see what others recommend. I'd also be happy to clarify anything in the discussion of C vs. C6 vs. Csus4 if you'd like!

Folk pop, singer-songstress McKenzie Lockhart is happy to have both feet back in her native Alabama soil after trying her hand at pursuing music in Nashville, TN. And more than that, elated to be releasing her most authentic project to date. Raised in the storied Shoals of northern Alabama, Lockhart began to feel that her homeland was beckoning her to return from Nashville as she began to experience a longing for home grown community and a greater space to explore her own creativity. So, she packed up her things, hugged the necks of her friends in Music City, and headed south with this new purpose filling up her horizon. After moving back to Florence where she currently resides, she took the time to dig deep into her roots and invest in her local music community by establishing a house show movement called CO-OP. During this this time, Lockhart found her voice afresh and decided to channel her new sound into her first proper EP Interlaced. The writing, recording, and release of Interlaced is truly a collaborative affair that brings together many of the voices that fill Lockhart's every day life and showcases her reconnection with community and her newly revived appreciation for the soil that made her who she is. Co-writes with her fiancé Payton Pruitt of Carver Commodore and her friend Jordy Searcy of NBC's The Voice pepper its track listing. Even the recording process of Interlaced is a reflection of her desire to keep where she's been and where she's going in mind as she has rounded up Pruitt, her friend and drummer Cody Carpenter, and producer Brendan St. Gelais to flesh out these five snapshots of her life in the harrowed Smoakstack Studios in Nashville. Lockhart's brother contributed the hand-drawn artwork that graces the cover of the project, and she partnered with good friend and singer-songwriter Quinn Erwin to release Interlaced through his new artist development conglomerate Waterman Creative.

Interlaced in singer-songwriter Jesse Macht’s catchy melodies are an abundance of stories overflowing with passion, vulnerability, empathy and honesty. Much like legendary songwriters before him such as Tom Petty and Neil Young, and modern day influences like Dan Wilson and Jon Brion, Jesse has proven his aptitude for storytelling. His music has been placed in many television shows and networks, as well as commercials, including The Voice, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Giuliana and Bill, Nickelodeon, Cymbalta and the MTV/E! cable catalogue. He’s also had numerous original songs placed in independent films such as James Franco’s "Good Time Max." Jesse has followed a path similar to his family of entertainers (his brother is actor Gabriel Macht, currently starring in USA’s "Suits," and father is veteran actor Stephen Macht). He has worked hard to make a musical home for himself (both as a solo artist and with his old band Burn Down the Mission) within L.A.’s well-known songwriter community with regular appearances at the Hotel Café, Room 5 and WitZend. Jesse Macht connects with his audience through reflective, conversational lyrics. While his words are dynamic and unapologetically truthful at times, he leaves room for his audience to contribute to the dialogue by using their own experiences. The new album, expected to come out in the fall of 2014, follows Jesse’s 2012 debut solo release Acts of Providence. With it, he hopes to continue to inspire his audience and encourage them to be vulnerable.  For more information, please visit his official website here:  http://www.jessemachtmusic.com/ and follow him on Twitter at jessemachtmusic

Today's 30 minute podcast reviews an recent article by Kim Lincoln of Village Soup's Rockland Herald Gazette on the interim results of an investigation by OPEGA, Maine's Office of Program Evaluation & Government Accountability, into the wrongdoings of Maine state prison officials, including Warden Jeffery Merrill and assistant corrections commissioner Denise Lord. Interlaced with a few choice excerpts of Jimi Hendrix music Regrettably, the Legislature voted a few days ago to terminate the OPEGA investigation and leave it up to Maine Department of Corrections to investigate themselves. In their words: "...allow the Department of Corrections to address these questions in continuing the cultural change work it has initiated in a more deliberate, coordinated and accelerated fashion. OPEGA, the Government Oversite Committee and/or the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee would receive periodic updates from the Department on the status of its cultural change efforts and the results achieved. In this way, the Department would be held accountable to pursue necessary change." Uh huh. 'held accountable'? Magnusson, Merill and Lord must have laughed all the way back to their prison fastness. Tech Talk

May 5th, 2007 - We discuss technical news topics, and take listener's questions. The main topic of this show was HDTV and focused on what makes a show High Definition and explains the terms you may come across when buying an HDTV. We also discussed the differences between HDTV and Digital Broadcasting. Pete stands up for Windows. - Show Notes - Main Topic: High Definition Television – At the end of 2006 a little over a quarter of US households own HDTVs. It is predicted that by 2011 this percentage will increase to 70%. With everyone adopting this new technology, we wanted to clear up some of the terminology surrounding HDTV. DTV Vs HDTV – Digitial television is a method of broadcasting a television signal. In the past, all TV broadcasts have been analog. The FCC has mandated that by February 17, 2009 all TV broadcasts must be digital. They are doing this to free up bandwidth for other uses. An added benefit is that by changing over to digital broadcasting the broadcasters have come up with a new standard called ATSC (the analog standard is referred to as NTSC) that allows for the support of widescreen and HDTV shows. Resolution – High Definition Television is a higher resolution image. Resolution in television is normally referred to as the number of vertical lines that can be displayed. You may have heard the terms 720p, 480p, and 1080i before. These are all standard TV resolutions. The “p” and “i" are abbreviations for progressive and interlaced respectively. Interlaced means that for each frame displayed on the television only half of the lines are drawn. First the even lines are drawn and then the odd ones. Progressive means that all lines are presented at the same time. The minimum resolution of High Definition TV is 720p. Support Calls: Benny in Phoenix Arizona called looking for advice on buying his first home computer. Pete advised that he use free time on his work computer to read reviews online. Kevin chimed in to offer 5 to 9’s services to build a computer for him to save the time of research, and to end up with a higher quality computer than anything he could buy online. Benny also had questions about the differences between Macs and PCs concerning ease of use. Ivy from Phoenix called about a slow computer. He tried a registry cleaner (we don’t recommend them…) and that didn’t help. Most likely he either has too many programs running in the background, or he may have a rootkit. The easiest and surest way to solve both problems is to backup and re-install Windows. We advised that he could try and uninstall programs to speed up the system, and run RootkitRevealer to see if he has a rootkit. If that doesn’t solve the problem, re-installing Windows is really the only course of action. News Stories: New spyware legislation a mixed bag Crackdown on HD DVD Key Sparks Widespread Web Revolt Dell to choose Ubuntu Apple makes money on iTunes '$100 Laptop' to Cost $175 Internet Radio Equality Act would overturn decision on webcasting fees Pete’s Rant: Pete defends Windows. He points out that Microsoft is the “big guy” and as a result everyone picks on them. Because they are big they get targeted by viruses and security exploits. He also reminds us that every time a new version of software is released there are going to be bugs, and Vista is no different.
