There's a beautiful bit of symmetry this week as we begin where we left off last week on topic of kebabs, although these ones have nothing to do with football legend Lukas Podolski. No, these kebabs are in a more British variation, as we discuss and award winning kebab pie in the UK, and why Australia seems to have cornered the market in German pies. From pies, we turn to the topic of cups and cupboards as we find out why questioning someone's mug storage is a major insult in Germany, and why an ill judged remark during the recent election has seen one German politician receive as many as 5,000 mugs and cups in protest. We finish things off by looking at the story of two German tourists who have recently been detained on the Mexico/US border after being refused entry in the USA, highlighting the institutionalised cruelty of border control in America. In episode 152 of Imagine Otherwise, host Cathy Hannabach interviews education scholars and leaders Magdalena L. Barrera and Genevieve Negrón-Gonzales about their new book The Latinx Guide to Graduate School. Magdalena and Genevieve teamed up to write this guide after many years of advising Latinx graduate students struggling to navigate the hidden curriculum of academia—a curriculum built around norms of whiteness, wealth, and settler heteronormativity. Demonstrating the brilliance, scholarly rigor, and leadership these graduate students bring to academia, they created this guide to center the worldviews and lives of Latinx communities in graduate education. In their conversation, Magdalena and Genevieve share about their process for researching and writing the book, particularly how they navigated the co-authoring process amidst busy teaching and administrative responsibilities. They also explain how faculty and advisors can support prospective and current graduate students in embracing their full lives—lives that extend beyond many graduate programs' myopic focus on research productivity alone. Cathy, Magdalena, and Genevieve close out their conversation with Magdalena and Genevieve's vision for remaking PhD and MA programs in the service of a culturally liberatory education. Magdalena L. Barrera is the vice provost for faculty success at San José State University, where she provides leadership on all aspects of faculty recruitment and professional advancement. US officials are struggling to keep up with the increasing number of migrants arriving at the southern border and seeking asylum. Beginning this week, asylum officers will screen a small number of migrants at the border in temporary facilities. And, Saudi officials traveled to Sana'a, Yemen, on Sunday for direct talks with Houthi rebel leaders. Their arrival signals a new chapter in the effort to forge peace in Yemen's long civil war, but few have faith that a deal will change the lives of the Yemeni people. Also, the first tranche of funding from the International Monetary Fund was transferred into Sri Lanka's government coffers late last month. But after the island nation's economic and political collapse last summer, prices for electricity and fuel, as well as food insecurity rates, are still high. Plus, Sierra Leone's Bai Kamara, Jr. is the "traveling medicine man."

Fentanyl is deadly. Thousands of Americans die every year from a drug overdose – the majority of them after using a synthetic opioid like fentanyl. Fentanyl was developed as a legal, and effective, pain killer. Now, fuelled by insatiable US demand, it's illicitly produced in makeshift laboratories in Mexico by organised crime groups. In the first of a two-part series, Assignment travels to the Mexican Pacific port of Manzanillo. This is one of the main entry points for the chemical ingredients required to make fentanyl. It's a town where Mexico's powerful cartels have fought for control, and where the mayor lives under armed guard after a failed assassination attempt. Although the primary destination of Mexican-made fentanyl is the US, Mexico too has a rising number of addicts – especially in Tijuana on the Mexico / US border. Last episode we covered the disastrous idea of a US invasion of Mexico. In today's part 2, we put on our speculative hats to wonder just how bad it could get. In most contexts the idea of a new US civil war is ridiculous. But a conflict with Mexico would be destabilizing enough to bring serious conflict to all of North America's cities. In recent weeks, there has been accelerating talk of military intervention in Mexico due to concerns over drug trafficking, immigration, and border security. Most sensible people believe that a US invasion of Mexico would make all of these things worse. But in today's episode we speculate about the ways such a conflict could escalate into something far, far worse than most are imagining. The war on drugs launched by former Mexican President Felipe Calderón and his American counterpart, George W. Bush has had dire consequences for Mexico, including an unprecedented increase in violence, corruption, and human rights abuses. The militarization of Mexico's drug war resulted in a surge of organized crime and violence, with drug cartels and criminal organizations becoming even more powerful and emboldened. We don't believe that this was an intentional strategy by the United States, but if we had set out to soften up Mexico for conquest in 2007, it's hard to think of a more effective way to go about it We tend to avoid concrete predictions and sci-fi speculation here at the MFF, but today's episode goes nuts. What would the long-term effects of such a conflict be? We cast ourselves forward into an unknown future by ransacking US history, and even going back to Rome. It's a fun episode about a very not fun topic. We hope you enjoy it.

That we have a refugee crisis in this nation is not news. The dictionary definition of "refugee" is "a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster." And we've seen the world's refugee population grow by at least three million in the last three weeks, as Ukrainians are literally running for their lives. Here in the US, Ukranians who somehow made it to the Mexico/US border have been turned away. Hopefully that will change soon, but I'm not confident. The AP is reporting that finally, more than 6 months since we left Afghanistan, the US has just announced that those Afghan refugees who made their way here would be allowed to stay for at least 18 months under temporary protected status, a move that should help thousands who arrived since the withdrawal... But what about the other refugees who have valid reasons to ask for asylum? And what about the refugees fleeing horrific conditions in other parts of the world? When we discuss refugees, we rarely consider those who have fled the US. Well, one of them is our guest today. Tiffanie Drayton gives us a different perspective as she tells her story in her new book, "Black American Refugee: Escaping the Narcissism of the American Dream.
