Join us on our ninth episode with Sylvia Tidey, a cultural anthropologist and Associate Professor at the University of Virginia in the Anthropology Department and Global Studies Program. In her first research project, Tidey examined the continuation of civil service corruption in Indonesia in the aftermath of stringent anti–corruption measures meant to promote “good governance.” In her book titled "Ethics or the Right Thing: Corruption and Care in the Age of Good Governance," Tidey explores novel forms of corruption within Indonesia's civil service. On this episode we will discuss Tidey's work studying corruption in Indonesia, the failure of anti-corruption efforts, and good governance.

The Dail is in recess, and that means no Friday wrap today. Instead, we're going to bring you a conversation that was originally published on the feed of our sister podcast In the News, hosted by Bernice Harrison, all about a story that gripped 1980s Ireland. You can subscribe to In the News for free here.On December 16th, 1983, after 23 days in captivity, kidnapped supermarket executive Don Tidey was rescued. He had been taken by members of the Provisional IRA posing as gardaí while driving his daughter to school in Dublin. With the whole country transfixed by the kidnapping, Garda intelligence tracked the culprits and their victim down to Derrada Wood outside Ballinamore in Co Leitrim. And while the release of Tidey safe and well was a success, the day was shrouded in tragedy because during the rescue his captors shot dead Private Patrick Kelly and recruit Garda Gary Sheehan. The murders shocked the country and no one has been brought to justice for them. Most of the kidnappers got clean away. While the event has been the subject of much media attention over the years, Tidey has never spoken about it until now. This year he talked to Tommy Conlon and Ronan McGreevy for their new book, The Kidnapping, A Hostage, a Desperate Manhunt and a Bloody Rescue. They talk to In the News about the events in 1983 and the aftermath. Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Suzanne Brennan. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Kelby was one of my first friends in comedy when we started standup almost 3 years ago. Originally from Union, SC, Kelby is now living in LA. Kelby is father, nurse, Army vet, Yogi, actor, and comedian. On this interview, we reminisce about early memories of standup, and Kelby tells his comedy story, beginning in El Paso, Texas when he first was inspired to try standup, through his time in Greenville, Tennessee, and now Hollywood. He shares lessons learned through his divorce and custody battle, spiritual advice about the importance of unconditional love and its connection to authentic creative expression, why he's optimistic about the future of humanity despite the fear and chaos on the news, and more. Lots of encouraging wisdom in this interview. Do you know how to actively listen? In this week's episode, Dr. Leah Tidey (she/her) shares about how her definition of bisexuality has evolved since she first claimed it at the age of 12. Learn how intersections of bisexuality and consensual non-monogamy have created stigma she's been pushing against. We also discuss Robyn Och's definition of bisexuality and how Leah's work as a sexual health educator can be tricky in terms of how much of herself she feel comfortable sharing with her students or overall in certain spaces due to bisexual erasure and biphobia. Have you ever wondered why people may use the term “partner”? Leah talks about how she doesn't want to deceive people and doesn't feel she is; she's intentional about how it's encompassing as a term and moves way from traditions we may have been taught, while recognizing the privilege in feeling comfortable enough to use it. We also talk about how COVID-19 and the pandemic overall has brought about lots of conversations that the polyamorous community has already been having for a long time related to bubbles and who we are seeing and when. Do you know anyone who practices ethical or consensual non-monogamy? If you know about it, where did you get your information from? Have you heard about it in any of your classes or throughout your education? Do any shows, movies, or other media you consume accurately portray it? Is it made to be a joke? Do you know of any love songs that aren't strictly for monogamous couples? If you know of anyone who practices it, do you make sure to invite all of their partners to outings or events? If you don't practice it yourself, have you examined your own beliefs around it and done your own research? On this episode of "I did this instead of killing myself", I interview another one of my good friends in stand-up comedy, Kelby Tidey. Kelby's style is...unique, to put it mildly. He takes us into the mind of a joke to him, which involves who would win in a battle to the death between a Chik-Fil-A employee and a Publix employee. He shares his best Bill Clinton impression. Last episode of Season 1! Today on the show, I answer your questions about how to find sexually and emotionally compatible partners and how advisable it is to get in touch with an ex, especially during Cuffing Season. I also share my interview with the brilliant Dr. Paige Fisher aka my mom. We talk about her journey on being Dr. Fisher and not Dr. Tidey, when I told her about the first time I kissed a girl and basically how I've been a sex nerd since I was three years old. To me, it feels like the perfect way to end Season 1 with the woman who has taught me so much about how to hold my head high and share my voice with the world. Resources from the Show! In the early 1980s, there was a series of kidnap-for-ransom crimes committed in the Republic by the Provisional IRA in order to raise funds to finance their organisation and its terrorist operations here and in the UK. One of the victims of these abductions was prominent businessman, Don Tidey, and Englishman who was the senior executive of the Quinnsworth group of supermarkets. Tidey was held for 23 days in Derrada wood, Co Leitrim. He as rescued by the gardai and the army, but a garda probationer and an army private were killed during the operation. Though a number of people were charged in relation to the kidnap, no one has ever been charged in relation to the two killings. ******** Thanks to our sponsors for today’s episode: Get 10% off your first three months of vitamins at http://ritual.com/mens Sign up for professional online counselling at http://betterhelp.com/mens and get 10% off your first month! As promised, last Tuesday Bob & Zaq took to the stage at The Drop Comedy Club in South Bend, Indiana. Both of your hosts performed 5 minute stand-up comedy sets in front of a packed room. Friend of the show Freddie Miller, and Bob's brother Brent also performed. We all had a blast, and in this week's episode Bob & Zaq are joined by one of the managers at The Drop, Maxwell Tidey. Max talks about what it takes to become a successful comic, and critiques the open mic sets from the night before.
Let's talk about sexual health for older adults! Leah Tidey is a Ph.D. Candidate in Applied Theatre at the University of Victoria. Her research focuses on the social stigma of sexuality across the life course and explores intergenerational, community-based theatre as a means to address it. Her work as Playwright/Facilitator with the Victoria Target Theatre Society and Victoria High School, federally funded in part by the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program, culminated in a well-received intergenerational performance of You're Doing What?! At Your Age?! Leah currently works with the Island Sexual Health Society on a Community Wellness Grant to develop a sexual health program for older adults.
