Tom Luongo likes to pull on threads. He keeps pulling no matter where they take him, even they lead places that challenge some of the most deeply held convictions of libertarians. In this episode, we talk (again) about Tom's view that – in this particular moment in time – we might want to be cheering for the US Federal Reserve, because it could be that it is fighting a beast that is much bigger, more dangerous, and has the potential to centralize power over our lives in ways that even the Fed cannot. Tom gives us some indicators to watch for in the coming months, that he says will support his thesis. Is Tom right? Listen to the episode and decide for yourself. You can find Tom here, where he hosts a podcast and produces an intensely well-researched and thought out newsletter covering financial and geopolitical issues of the day. Dr. Walter Block goes right for the controversial issues in the battle for freedom. Instead of looking at the low-hanging fruit that most people agree on, Dr. Block makes persuasive arguments for extending freedom into even the most controversial areas of our lives - including roads, prostitution, and child labor. Russia has no borders. This was the expansive and imperialistic idea behind the Russian World philosophy. But Ukraine has turned the tables on this idea and shown that Russia's vast border regions are undefended, and in some ways undefendable. From the ‘little blue men' appearing in Belgorod, to the drone strikes deep in Russian territory, the theatrical explosion about the Kremlin roof, and the mysterious fires happening at strategic facilities all over Russia, it seems that Putin's war to secure Russia's borders has actually had the effect of stripping Russia of any safety and security. Konstantin Samoilov is a well-known YouTuber whose channel ‘Inside Russia' comments insightfully on Russia's decent into authoritarianism over the last few years. But now, like many others, he's outside Russia, with no idea of when he can return there.

Summary: Reason and the record of history both lead us to the conclusion that protection of private property and free markets result in the best outcomes for society, including dramatic reductions in poverty. Yet, people are still inclined to be suspicious of the market and resistant to the idea that government interventions cause economic distortions, no matter how obvious the cause/effect relationships may be. Dr. Walter Block joins Tom to discuss the results of research Dr. Block has done into why the “anti-capitalist mentality” is so hard to overcome. Guest Bio: Walter Edward Block is an American Austrian School economist and anarcho-capitalist theorist. He currently holds the Harold E. Wirth Eminent Scholar Endowed Chair in Economics at the School of Business at Loyola University New Orleans and is a senior fellow of the non-profit think-tank Ludwig von Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama. Dr. Block earned his PhD in Economics at Columbia University. He is an author, editor, and co-editor of many books which include Defending the Undefendable; Lexicon of Economic Thought, Economic Freedom of the World 1975-1995; Rent Control: Myths and Realities; Discrimination, Affirmative Action, and Equal Opportunity; Theology, Third Word Development and Economic Justice; Man, Economy, and Liberty: Essays in Honor of Murray N. Rothbard; Religion, Economics, and Social Thought; and Economic Freedom: Toward a Theory of Measurement. He has also written more than 500 articles for various non-refereed journals, magazines, and newspapers, and is a contributor to such journals as The Review of Austrian Economics, Journal of Libertarian Studies, The Journal of Labor Economics, Cultural Dynamics, and the Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics. He is currently a professor and chair of economics, college of business administration, at Loyola University. After all the huffing and puffing about Russia's invasion of Ukraine, can you believe that Vladimir Putin's ambassador still hasn't been kicked out of New Zealand? Or “expelled” as they call it in diplomatic circles. National's foreign affairs spokesperson Gerry Brownlee can't believe it either. He's particularly upset about it after the Russian Embassy in Wellington has been defending the invasion on social media and he wants the Ambassador kicked out of the country ASAP. And I'm with Gerry Brownlee a hundred percent on this one. The social media stuff he's talking about all happened in the past week. Last Thursday, after that appalling missile strike on the maternity and children's hospital in Ukraine, the Russian Embassy in Wellington went on Facebook claiming that the hospital was empty and was just being used by the Ukrainians for firing practise. Forget about the three people who died and the 17 others who were injured – all fake news according to the Russian Embassy in Wellington. The next day (Friday last week), the Embassy was back on Facebook accusing the United States and NATO of running biological military programmes in Ukraine. Something the US and NATO have denied. But that didn't stop the Russian Embassy in Wellington saying it. And I've had a look at its Facebook page today and it's still at it. Peddling Putin's propaganda. Posting statements from Russia's Defence and Foreign ministries that talk about Ukraine firing missiles into Russian neighbourhoods, people dying. Propaganda videos of Russian soldiers “apparently” delivering food and other aid to people in Ukraine. It's just nuts. And this is all coming from the Russian Embassy in Wellington. And Gerry Brownlee, quite rightly, is saying ‘why do we still have a representative of Putin's regime here in New Zealand spreading this propaganda on social media?'. I'm saying: How can we possibly tolerate the representative of someone who has shown himself to be – at best – a war criminal? Why on earth aren't we kicking his ambassador out of the country? I see Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta is trotting out the usual weasel words. Here's what she's got to say about the Embassy in Wellington's social media activity: “While we can't prevent another government from posting on social media, we encourage anyone who sees potentially harmful information to not spread or share it.” Do me a favour! Yes, Minister – you can't control what these war freaks do on Facebook, but you can kick their representative out of the country. And why aren't you doing it? You can pass legislation that lets you throw sanctions at Russia – and you've done all that. But how can you possibly defend the fact that Putin still has one of his lackeys sitting in Wellington – and not just sitting in Wellington, but spreading vile untruths on social media. “His excellency” – as the Embassy's website refers to him – can do what he wants on Facebook. But let him do it in Moscow, not Wellington. Because, in my view, by allowing the Russian Ambassador to stay in New Zealand, we are guilty of harbouring someone who is party to one of the most appalling war crimes in modern history. The fact that this ambassador's embassy is also trying to defend the undefendable on social media, makes it all the more despicable.
I talk with economist and philosopher Walter Block. We discuss his series of books, Defending the Undefendable. The third and latest in that trilogy was recently released. Block defends the legality, and sometimes the morality, of a variety of generally maligned practices and people. We talk about these, as well as libertarian punishment theory, how to handle hostage takers, and the infamous flagpole problem. The trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who murdered George Floyd by kneeling on his neck, is ongoing, Lex and Ace discuss the cultural ramifications of this trial, and what a controversial verdict could mean for the state of black people globally. Closer to home we discuss the controversial race report commissioned by the Tory government, which concluded that Britain is not institutionally racist. My guest is Dr. Walter Block, a professor of economics at Loyola University in New Orleans. He went to school with Bernie Sanders, and he's the author of several libertarian philosophy and economics books, most notably a set called "Defending the Undefendable" where he lays out acts which may be socially unacceptable or morally corrupt but should not be punishable in court. Some things we touch on are of a disturbing nature: nothing graphic, but I do want to mention that some vocabulary words do come up which may prompt hard questions from children or google searches they may not be ready for.
Alan Dershowitz is an American lawyer and legal scholar known for his scholarship of U.S. constitutional law and American criminal law, and a noted advocate of civil liberties. He taught at Harvard Law School from 1964 through 2013, where he was appointed as the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law in 1993. Dershowitz is a regular media contributor, political commentator, and legal analyst. He is also a prominent voice on the Arab–Israeli conflict and has written several books on the subject. Dershowitz is known for taking on high profile and often unpopular causes and clients. As of 2009, he had won 13 of the 15 murder and attempted murder cases he handled as a criminal appellate lawyer. Dershowitz has represented celebrity clients including Mike Tyson, Patty Hearst, Leona Helmsley, Julian Assange, and Jim Bakker. Major legal victories have included two successful appeals that overturned convictions, first for Harry Reems in 1976, followed by Claus von Bülow in 1984 who had been convicted for the attempted murder of his wife, Sunny. In 1995, Dershowitz served as the appellate adviser on the O. J. Simpson murder trial, part of the legal "Dream Team", alongside Johnnie Cochran and F. Lee Bailey. Dershowitz was a member of the defense team for Harvey Weinstein in 2018 and for the impeachment trial of Donald Trump in 2020. He was a member of the legal defense team for Jeffrey Epstein and helped to negotiate a 2006 non-prosecution agreement on Epstein's behalf. Dershowitz is the author of several books about politics and the law, including Reversal of Fortune: Inside the von Bülow Case (1985), the basis of the 1990 film; Chutzpah (1991); Reasonable Doubts: The Criminal Justice System and the O.J. Simpson Case (1996); The Case for Israel (2003); Rights From Wrongs: A Secular Theory of the Origins of Rights (2004); and The Case for Peace (2005). His two most recent works are: The Case Against Impeaching Trump (2018) and Guilt by Accusation: The Challenge of Proving Innocence in the Age of #MeToo (2019). Actual Anarchy Podcast - AnCap Movie Reviews from a Rothbardian Perspective
We have a bit of a treat for you this close to Halloween. We discuss George A. Romero's uncopyrighted zombie-vector the Night of the Living Dead (1968) and the remake from 1990 with Mike C. a listener and electronic music artist from Canada. You can find his music at: https://soundcloud.com/user850128897/sets/stir-the-pot Great conversation ensues and we hope that you enjoy this frightful take on the beauty that springs forth when market forces are allowed to flourish. Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/AnarchoCapitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)
Recorded at the Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama, on 27 July 2016.
On today's show, Jon discusses a recent even at LAX where KPOP band "Oh My Girl" was detained for 15 hours because authorities thought they were "working women" (prostitutes). Environmentalism is the natural enemy of free market capitalism. The former seems to be the socially acceptable cover used by those who seek to capture and control the world's economic engine, in order to “save the planet.” (I wonder how much time we have until the surface of the earth looks like the set of Mad Max?) Free market capitalists (note that not every capitalist favors free markets, thus the “free market” modifier is needed) know that voluntary, un-coerced cooperation among market participants is the only system to preserve individual freedom and the environment. How does this work? Bob's guest, Austrian economist, Libertarian, prolific writer and speaker Walter Block explains all of it in his unique and accessible style. His book “Defending the Undefendable” is a must read. Block, Hayek, Mises and more…
Attack the System The Necessity of Defending the Undefendable August 4, 2013 Keith Preston says too many anarchists and libertarians are falling down on the job. Topics include: A discussion of Walter Block’s classic work “Defending the Undefendable” and Sean Gabb’s new book on the decline of free speech in England. Why defending the outcast, despised, and disreputable much be a libertarian first principle. How too many left-anarchists have become de facto liberal Democrats and too many right-libertarians have become de facto conservative Republicans. Why the revolutionary strategy and program of ARV-ATS necessarily involves the More…
Libertarian ideas have been a major theme in The Conversation. They were introduced in our second episode by Max More and have since been elaborated upon by David Miller, Robert Zubrin, Tim Cannon, and Oliver Porter. But while libertarianism has been discussed frequently, it has always been a secondary theme within episodes about, say, transhumanism or space exploration. But libertarianism is too intriguing to discuss obliquely, so we're pulling it out of the background and exploring it in a full episode. We were especially interested in the logical conclusion of libertarian thought and, for that, we turned to Walter Block. Walter Block is a self-described anarcho-capitalist, chair of the Economics Department at Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and a Senior Fellow at the libertarian Mises Institute. Block is also the author of numerous articles and several books, including Defending the Undefendable and The Case for Discrimination. Connections to earlier episodes abound as Block calls John Zerzan crazy, suggests Gary Francione commit suicide, and lambastes the ideas of John Rawls that were advanced by Lawrence Torcello. Whatever you think of this episode, you'll certainly remember it.

Chase and Mike sit down with Dr. Walter Block, professor of economics at Loyola University in New Orleans. Walter talks about the myth of the market failure, and discusses how the free market does a much better job of dealing with environmental problems than the state does. You can check out Dr. Block's work at www.walterblock.com or at www.mises.org Here is the article by Murray Rothbard which Dr. Block refers to: http://archive.mises.org/4939/law-property-rights-and-air-pollution-by-murray-rothbard/ Buy his books, including "Defending the Undefendable" one of the first libertarian books I ever read.
