At a time when debates over tariffs, regulation, and the scope of government are back at center stage. Is this time in American history unprecedented, or can we find parallels in the past? For example, has trade “hollowed out” U.S. manufacturing—or have fact tariffs like the Corn Laws in Britain hurt working-class families the most? Was the Great Depression a failure of capitalism—rather than a policy crisis worsened by poor monetary responses and overreach? Today’s guest is Phil Gramm, a former U.S. Senator and author of “The Triumph of Economic Freedom.” We look at five periods of American history—the Industrial Revolution, Progressive Era, Great Depression, decline of America’s postwar preeminence in world trade, and the Great Recession—along with the existing levels of income inequality and poverty, leads many to believe in expanding government in American life. Gramm argues that the evidence points to a contrary verdict: government interference and failed policies pose the most significant threat to economic freedom.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this powerful and timely episode of The Neil Haley Show, Neil sits down with Senator Phil Gramm, former U.S. Senator and economist, and Donald J. Boudreaux, a respected economics professor and thought leader, to discuss their groundbreaking book:The Triumph of Economic Freedom: Debunking the Seven Great Myths of American Capitalism.Together, they break down the most widespread lies about capitalism and why free markets, competition, and innovation continue to be the greatest forces for human progress and prosperity.
In this episode, Mark Thornton discusses The Triumph of Economic Freedom: Debunking the Seven Great Myths of American Capitalism, the new book by Senator Phil Gramm and Professor Donald J. Boudreaux.Mark reflects on the persistent misconceptions about capitalism in America and offers up a "Marxist interpretation" of our dilemma. He explores how entrenched ideologies shape the way information is presented, the influence of state actors on education and media, and the ways in which these forces skew perceptions of economic history. Ultimately, Mark argues for a more critical and evidence-based approach to understanding capitalism.Additional Resources"Your Kids Are Already Communists, and College Will Make It Worse" (Minor Issues, Episode 89): Mises.org/MI_89"Political Bias in Academia" (Minor Issues, Episode 95): Mises.org/MI_95Be sure to follow Minor Issues at Mises.org/MinorIssues
Roger welcomes Robert Lawson, economist, author, and director of the Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom at Southern Methodist University. Lawson is the co-author of “Socialism Sucks: Two Economists Drink Their Way Through the Unfree World.”In this episode, they discuss Lawson's firsthand observations from socialist regimes including Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea and how central planning continues to fail the people living under it. They explore the dangerous appeal of socialism in modern political discourse, the real differences between Scandinavian welfare states and actual socialist systems, and why economic freedom remains essential to human flourishing. Plus, they highlight the power (and unfortunate rarity) of an engaging and accessible economics education that equips students with a lifelong understanding of how the world works.Robert Lawson is a founding co-author of the Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom of the World annual report, which presents an economic freedom index for over 160 countries tracking which nations thrive—and which collapse—based on policy choices. He received the 2025 TFAS Gary M. Walton Award for Excellence in Economic Education. The Liberty + Leadership Podcast is hosted by TFAS president Roger Ream and produced by Podville Media. In this episode, we examine Friedrich Hayek's The Road to Serfdom, a chilling warning about how societies drift into tyranny—not through force, but through the seductive promise of central planning. Written in the shadow of fascism and communism, Hayek's argument is more relevant than ever: when the state takes control of the economy, it inevitably takes control of our lives. What begins as progress can end in oppression. This is the road to serfdom.

Send us a textWhat makes some states thrive while others trap people in place? And what does it really mean to be free to move, grow, and flourish? In this episode, I talk with economist Justin Callais about the deep connections between personal fulfillment, economic mobility, and institutional quality. We begin with the personal: why real change starts internally, and how self-mastery and agency are prerequisites for meaningful, external progress. Then, we zoom out to ask: what kinds of systems make it easier for people to rise?We explore questions like:What is economic mobility—and what does it look like in practice? Why is Utah the top-performing states on the Archbridge Institute's Social Mobility Index, while Louisiana lags behind? How do factors like governance quality, opportunity, and freedom of movement shape people's life outcomes? What role do individuals, institutions, and state policies play in promoting (or restricting) upward mobility?Justin Callais is the chief economist at the Archbridge Institute. He studies development economics, polycentric governance, and the institutional roots of freedom and flourishing. If you've ever wondered why where you live matters—or what it takes to build a society where people can truly move up in life—this conversation is for you.Want to explore more?James Heckman on Inequality and Economic Mobility, an EconTalk podcastRaj Chetty on Economic Mobility, an EconTalk podcastArnold Kling, The Kids Are...Different, at EconlibKerianne Lawson on Equal Economic Freedoms, a Great Antidote podcastJeremy Horpedahl on the Real Cost of Thriving Index, a Great Antidote podcastSupport the showNever miss another AdamSmithWorks update.Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Key Takeaways: Saving Helps Everyone When people save money, it doesn't just sit there—it gets used to help businesses grow and create jobs. This makes the economy stronger and more stable. Smart Borrowing Helps the Economy Grow Using credit (borrowing money) the right way—like taking a loan to buy a house or start a business—helps the economy grow. But if too many people borrow irresponsibly, it can cause financial problems. Inflation vs. Deflation Inflation means prices go up over time, making things more expensive. Deflation (in a well-managed system) can actually be a good thing because it shows that businesses are getting better at producing goods efficiently, which can lower prices. What History Teaches Us About Money and Power Throughout history, whenever a small group controlled all the money, regular people suffered. Economic freedom—where people can make their own financial choices—leads to a healthier society. Working Together Creates Innovation and Wealth In places like Silicon Valley and Texas, businesses work together to create new technology and products. When companies collaborate instead of competing too aggressively, they can build wealth faster. In President Donald Trump's recent joint address to Congress, he said, "To unshackle our economy, I have directed that for every one new regulation, ten old regulations must be eliminated." Elon Musk, whom Trump has assigned to execute this vision, has argued that it is time to get rid of all regulations, or as Musk said, “regulations, basically, should be default gone.”Joining Bethany and Luigi to discuss this intensified commitment to deregulation and laissez-faire capitalism is Sam Peltzman, perhaps the leading living expert on the economics of regulation. Peltzman is the Ralph and Dorothy Keller Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business and director emeritus of the Stigler Center, which sponsors this podcast and is named after his mentor, Nobel-Prize laureate George Stigler. Together, the three of them chart a historical perspective on regulation, from Stigler's ideas of regulatory capture to the unintended consequences of deregulatory efforts over time to today's “chainsaw” approach to gutting federal agencies. To understand the costs and benefits of regulation, they discuss how federal agencies have recently intervened in markets, if the private sector could not have accomplished these interventions more efficiently, and if these interventions did more harm than good. Their case studies include the funding, testing, and rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, the regulation of cryptocurrencies, the management of the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, and the role of the government in addressing climate change. On this week's interview Paul talks to Matthew Mitchell. Matt is Senior Fellow in the Centre for Human Freedom at the Canadian Fraser Institute (a free market think tank). But Matthew WAS with the Rio Grande Foundation many years ago. He is a native New Mexican living in Angel Fire. More importantly, he and Paul have co-authored a new report "Economic Freedom in the Land of Enchantment" which Paul considers the most important policy study the Foundation has ever undertaken. The report has loads of useful information but specifically finds that New Mexico is the ONLY state in the nation to lose economic freedom since 1981.

Many people are taught that the best way to achieve financial security is to build a nest egg through stocks and mutual funds. Most Americans, however, even after following this advice, do not have enough money to retire and achieve financial independence. This is because the returns on these vehicles is lower than 10% on average per annum, and they generally don't produce income apart from low single digit dividends. Chris Miles, a cash flow expert and founder of Money Ripples, teaches people strategies on how to invest their earnings into passive income.
On this episode of Reaganism, Reagan Institute Director of the Center for Civics, Education, and Opportunity Daniel M. Rothschild is joined by Dr. Samuel Gregg who serves as the Friedrich Hayek Chair in Economics and Economic History at the American Institute for Economic Research. They discuss the current state of free markets in America, emphasizing the critical choices facing the nation in the upcoming election. They explore the intertwining of economic, moral, and cultural dimensions in shaping public policy and the role of civil society. Dr. Gregg highlights the importance of historical figures like Wilhelm Röpke in understanding the foundations of economic freedom and critiques the welfare state while advocating for a revival of civil society to address genuine needs. The discussion also touches on the responsibilities of businesses in society and the need for a long-term perspective in political and economic discourse.
In this episode, we're talking about how America has real leadership again under Trump's administration, the importance of deporting illegal immigrants to restore law and order, and why we need to confirm RFK Jr. for the good of American health and wellbeing. We'll break down the policies that actually put America first, expose the chaos that's unfolded since, and discuss how we can push for real positive change for our country. We also need to focus on how we (desperately) need a separation of business and state.—https://noblegoldinvestments.com/invest/gold-ira/
