Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei believes today's AI models hallucinate, or make things up and present them as if they're true, at a lower rate than humans do, he said during a press briefing at Anthropic's first developer event, Code with Claude, in San Francisco on Thursday. Ari Kuschnir is a filmmaker, creative strategist, and the founder of the production company m ss ng p eces. His work is driven by themes of empathy, consciousness, and transformation. In this episode, Ari joins Sam for a wide-ranging conversation on the future of storytelling, particularly in the arena of AI filmmaking. They explore the ethical and emotional landscape of generative AI, and his new Esalen-inspired short video, a surreal time-traveling narrative conjured through text-to-video tools. Also included: — How AI filmmaking serves as a collective dream engine and wish-fulfillment machine — The origin story Ari's "Transmutation" series and why they work in the medium of AI film — Whether cinema and art can become a tool for cultural repair and personal empowerment — The strange kinship between algorithmic hallucination and spiritual insight This is a rich and intimate conversation with a trailblazing artist that centers around what it means to create meaningful media in a time of profound transformation.
This week on Grumpy Old Geeks, Fyre Festival rises from the ashes yet again—but not as a festival, because even Billy McFarland finally figured out he's better at selling pipe dreams than tents. Meanwhile, Amazon and Microsoft are tapping the brakes on their AI data center dreams, Google's AI keeps confidently explaining made-up nonsense like it's gospel, and Kevin Roose once again tries to convince us to have empathy for the glorified autocomplete machines. (Spoiler: We won't.) Also, OpenAI wants to buy Chrome even though they can barely afford their own lunch tabs, Perplexity says the quiet part loud about stalking your browser habits, and Meta lays off more VR developers while pretending they care about human rights. In the “it's all stupid, but at least it's entertaining” department: Uber gets sued for making it harder to cancel than joining Scientology, Adam Neumann dupes investors again, sperm racing is now a real thing (and yes, there's crypto involved), and Bluesky caves to the almighty blue checkmark. Plus, Affinity Suite reminds us you don't have to sell a kidney to escape Adobe, The Wheel of Time gets an open-world game that'll probably drop after the heat death of the universe, and Wednesday Season 2 is on the way, because Netflix refuses to let its only hits rest.Stick around for The Dark Side with Dave where we grumble about Andor Season 2, lament bad writing decisions, geek out over old-school arcade games, and learn that memory colors are apparently a thing. Oh, and if you're feeling fancy, go ahead and thank ChatGPT for wasting millions in server bills—because if Sam Altman's crying about manners costing money, we're grabbing the popcorn.Sponsors:Insta360 - The first 30 people who use code “gog” at store.insta360.com get a free 45” invisible selfie stick worth $25!DeleteMe - Head over to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use the code "GOG" for 20% off.Private Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. Manton and Daniel talk about the upcoming Apple special event where new iPhones are expected to be announced. They talk about their respective likelihoods of buying one, and remark on the diminishing importance of smallness in a phone's physical design. This episode was inspired by the super popular and super awesome video game and HBO adaptation “The Last of Us”. In the series, cordyceps evolve to spawn a zombie pandemic but is this more than science fiction? While nothing of this magnitude is likely to happen, the fungus ergot has been cited as the possible cause of an event in 1951 where many people in a small town had some pretty intense hallucinations after eating bread made from questionable flour. Ergot is also a possible explanation for the 1518 Dancing Plague in Strasbourg where it is said hundreds of people were compelled to dance even though they were exhausted and in pain. Some people even lost their lives. The potential cures for the Dancing Plague were almost as weird as the affliction itself! Warning: some language or themes may not be suitable for all ages. Here's four words for you to ponder: Hallucinate; Authentic; A I and Rizz These four words have each been named the 2023 word of the year by different English dictionaries. So what do the words 'authentic' and 'hallucinate' tell us about where society is at in 2023? Joining Nights to find some meaning is University of Waikato linguist Andreea Calude.
Cambridge Dictionary chose hallucinate as the word of the year. The reasoning has to do with artificial intelligence. Is it helpful for us to assign human-like experiences to artificial intelligence? What does that say about our society and how should we as parents respond to the movement of culture into a place that tries to build an alternative reality with the power of computation? Dr. Kathy has some important insights and encouragement for parents today. Today is Giving Tuesday. Join us at Celebrate Kids by giving at www.celebratekids.com/give
It's an all new That Real Blind Tech show, and the episode that almost never happened. It's a packed studio with Allison, Brian, Jeanine, and David Goldstein once again pinch hitting for a sick Ed. After some fun technological difficulties, we kick things off discussing the NFB Pennsylvania state conference that both Brian and David were just at. And Brian doesn't even live in the state of Pennsylvania. Jeanine then fills us in on the ACB Ohio conference she just attended and the special message that was waiting for her at the conference. Which then leads us to a new term, BBB, and you will have to listen to learn what it mean. Is. Amazon working on a new operating system? Microsoft is rebranding Remote Desktop as Windows app, but will it be for enterprise users only? Apple has followed IBM, and Disney, Comcast, and Paramount have all paused advertising on Twitter because MuskButt it an idiot. It has been a crazy past few days since Open A.I. fired C.E.O. Sam Altman. What will this mean for the future of Be My A.I.? And because we are not a daily podcast or a breaking news show, before we could get this episode released Sam Altman has returned to Open A.I. and is back as their C.E.O., and the board is out. Be My A.I. has now expanded in to customer service with their partnership with Microsoft. Is the Singularity closer than we think, and is it real? The Humane A.I. pin sounded like a game changer for the blind at first, but then we checked out their website. And their demo got a few things wrong with their A.I. With A.I. being the rage these days, no wonder Cambridge Dictionary chose Hallucinate as the word of the year. We discuss Black Friday and if we will be shopping for anything, or has Black Friday jumped the shark. While none of us were that excited for Black Friday, we were all very interested to learn about the strangest gifts found on the internet. Anil Seth is a professor of cognitive and computational neuroscientist at the University of Sussex, co-director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science, and an author. What is the Self? What does it mean that we are the same person we were 10 years ago? Why do we have a subjective experience of reality at all? Is consciousness created or perceived? These are fundamental questions that philosophers and neuroscientists have been trying to answer for centuries. So can a new science of consciousness give us the answers? Expect to learn why answering the problem of consciousness is such a difficult challenge, why you wake up as the same person everyday, whether we know for a fact that animals are conscious, why perception often is divorced from objective reality, just how reliable our memories are, how to trust your brain even when it's incredibly fallible and much more... We're blasting off to space in the finale of Snappt! Season One as hosts Paul and Pete chat all things ‘Future Nostalgia', Dua Lipa's genre-defining second studio album. Disco made a comeback into mainstream pop when Dua dropped Don't Start Now in 2019 and she didn't stop there… get it? We chronicle the slew of incredible singles from the album, including Physical, Levitating (No DaBaby Version), Hallucinate and Cool. At least, Cool should have been a single, which we battle it out over at Snappt! or Floppt! We outline the many, many versions of the album, including the Blessed Madonna's remix “album” and the Moonlight Edition and argue that all the songs that Dua should have added to the Side B were left on her unlocked Dropbox. Put Normani back on If It Ain't Me! We document Dua's globe-trotting adventures (no-- not her COVID super spreading journeys) on the Future Nostalgia World Tour, her incredible Studio 2054 Live Stream, the endless stream of collaborations following the era and where we think Ms. Peep might be heading next. Don't forget to rate us five stars, share the episode with all your friends and keep your eyes peeled… we're just starting now.
The boys get delusional and lie on this week's episode, featuring Vogue runway writer extraordinaire José Criales-Unzueta. We discuss everything from Random Identities (yes), wearing all black (yes), and tiktok fitpics (no). Bushwick is mentioned, yes, but we promise we aren't going to start purchasing low-income housing to build artisan, cruelty-free, custom septum piercing/gluten-free coffee shops. Tap in, learn a little something, and enjoy a wonderful episode!
Can we put a number on human consciousness? Neuroscientist Christof Koch is leading an effort to build a consciousness meter that could have real-world applications to determine whether coma patients are in a true vegetative state. Christof joined Lab Notes to talk about the science of consciousness, what psychedelic drugs have to do with consciousness, and how this new project could one day have applications in hospitals and clinics.
NT Wright answers question about the Easter story. Is it fair that Judas was predestined to betray Christ? Did the resurrection need to be physical? Could the disciples have hallucinated the risen Jesus? Is it significant that Jesus' mortal body was continuous with his resurrection body... but ours won't be? • For Conference & live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • More podcasts, free eBook, newsletter & ask a question: https://premierunbelievable.com • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/ntwright • Rest of the world: https://my.premier.org.uk/donate/donate-unbelievable-2022 • Exclusive podcast offers on Tom's books and videos from SPCK & NT Wright Online • Subscribe to the Ask NT Wright Anything podcast via your preferred podcast platform
