Throughout his genre-defying career as one of the most innovative musicians of our time, iconoclastic guitar player Marc Ribot has consistently defied expectation at every turn. Here, in his first collection of writing, we see that same uncompromising sensibility at work as he playfully interrogates our assumptions about music, life, and death. Through essays, short stories, and the occasional unfilmable film "mistreatment" that showcase the sheer range of his voice, Unstrung captures an artist whose versatility on the page rivals his dexterity onstage. In the first section of the book, "Lies and Distortion," Ribot turns his attention to his instrument--"my relation to the guitar is one of struggle; I'm constantly forcing it to be something else"--and reflects on his influences (and friends) like Robert Quine (the Voidoids) and producer Hal Willner (Saturday Night Live), while delivering an impassioned plea on behalf of artists' rights. Elsewhere, we glimpse fragments of Ribot's life as a traveling musician--he captures both the monotony of touring as well as small moments of beauty and despair on the road. In the heart of the collection, "Sorry, We're Experiencing Technical Difficulties," Ribot offers wickedly humorous short stories that synthesize the best elements of the Russian absurdist tradition with the imaginative heft of George Saunders. Taken together, these stories and essays cement Ribot's position as one of the most dynamic and creative voices of our time. Martin's interview with Marc Ribot was recorded on September 9th, 2021.

Tosh and Kimley discuss UNSTRUNG: RANTS AND STORIES OF A NOISE GUITARIST by Marc Ribot. Ribot first started making some serious noise on the music scene in the 1980s adding incredible sounds to records by the likes of Tom Waits and Elvis Costello as well as being an integral member of the downtown New York music scene playing with John Zorn, The Lounge Lizards and leading several bands of his own with wildly varying styles. This is his first book and it's a mix of music writing and short fiction. Marc has a wicked smart sense of humor and isn't shy to talk about his strong political leanings. And you can bet that he'll crank it up to 11! Además, Ribot publica libro: "Unstrung, Rants and Stories of a Noise Guitarist". Ya nos anticipó el año pasado que estaba trabajando el solo, y a solo ha grabado "Queen City" el saxofonista JD Allen. Un proyecto marcado por la experiencia de la pandemia. Toda la información y derechos: http://www.elclubdejazz.com
This month's guest is Mary Pauline Lowry, who wrote The Roxy Letters. Mary is married to a Brit, and she had lots of fascinating insights about the cultural differences between the countries, and I loved talking to her back about Bridget Jones and Jane Austen too. The Roxy Letters was one of my favourite reads of 2020. It was really fun and just what I needed. It's out now in paperback. Mary and I talked about why we love epistolary novels, took a bit of an accidental deep dive into books about Hollywood, chatted about the difference between British humour and American humour, and lots more! ***** Want to help the Brit Lit Podcast survive and thrive? Compliance Evangelist Tom Fox sits in for an insightful yet powerful conversation with James Gellert, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Rapid Ratings International. In this episode, glean the lessons that companies should never forget from the 2008 Financial Crisis to the Coronavirus health crisis and the total evolution of the business of compliance. Key points discussed in this episode: ✔️ Finance and financial health is an excellent example of a risk area that historically may have been isolated or siloed for the finance team or a finance person within the supply chain to look at. But in reality, all of these risks are connected. ✔️ Why the Rapid Rating approach helps companies manage their third-party supply chains through assessing financial health. We've seen significant changes over the last five to 10 years in the importance of financial health and how it helps define risk management programs. ✔️ Understand what a 3rd party ecosystem is and why companies need to understand the breadth and scope of their 3rd parties are really powerful. The more businesses can collaborate and communicate with each other, supply chain, risk management, supplier collaboration; these are crucial elements to creating the most robust ecosystem and benefiting both sides of that equation. ✔️ The silver lining to the Covid crisis made supply chain risk management stronger from now on, and more companies were able to adopt techniques than we ever had before. ✔️ More companies will benefit from more robust ecosystem creation and strengthening the ecosystems they've got into the future by embracing the importance of the digitalization of data they already have. Companies will need to spend a lot of time, money, and resources cleaning their data on their third parties and then implementing systematic approaches to managing those risks. James H. Gellert is the Chairman and CEO of RapidRatings International. Previously, he was the Managing Partner of Howland Partners, LLC, and Howland Securities LLC, which provided consulting, business development, capital raising, and M&A advisory to companies in the financial information and technology markets. Before those positions, he served as CEO of a number of technology companies, including wireless software and research companies SkyScout and Unstrung.
