Plus, Ryan Eggold shares details about the new thrilling series he stars in, ‘Cross.'

Hilliard Guess' Screenwriters Rant Room

In this new season premiere episode, Hilliard and guest co-host (actor/filmmaker) Shawn Carter Peterson sat down with JOHNNY RAY GILL - a critically acclaimed actor, filmmaker, rapper, poet and activist. He just finished filming seasons one and two of "CROSS" created by Ben Watkins, Amazon Prime's new psychological thriller based on the best-selling book series Alex Cross by James Patterson. Gill stars opposite Aldis Hodge and Ryan Eggold as Bobby Trey, a deadly, cunning ex-DC police officer from Shreveport who's motived by money and the reclaiming of his family's land, stolen by a racist predatory US government. Up next, Johnny Ray will be seen in cat form, in Oscar winner Gore Verbinski's highly anticipated new animated feature "Cattywumpus." It's purrhaps Gill's most hysterical transformation yet. This dynamic, versatile, potent performer might be best known for his soul-stirring performance as Kerwin, opposite Aden Young in the Ray Mckinnon, Mark Johnson, Melissa Bernstein Sundance series "Rectify." A darling amongst critics, exemplified by reviews like The New Yorker “A Quiet Marvel” and Vulture “There May Never Be a Show Like Rectify Again.”Gill's also fondly remembered for warming audience's hearts with his portrayal of Sam, an autistic man trapped in the bowels of slavery, America's greatest sin, on WGN's hit series "Underground" alongside Jurnee Smollett and Aldis Hodge.Another don't miss episode y'all! Our Motto: "We keep it GAME all day!"For information, Merch (T-SHIRTS/HOODIES IN BLACK, GREY & WHITE), and all things Rant Room!Screenwritersrantroom.comhttps://screenwriters-rant-room.printify.me/productsSubscribe, like, follow, share & 5-star review!@Hilliard Guess on all social mediaIG: @ScreenwritersRantRoom@Johnnyraygill@ShawnthemaestroWE ARE NOW OPEN TO SPONSORSHIPS AND BRANDING OPPORTUNITIES :Screenwritersrantroom@gmail.comWe invest countless hours per week to deliver the actionable content that goes into this podcast. “New Amsterdam” Star Ryan Eggold to Guest on NBC's ‘Law & Order”

Write the Damn Book Already
Ep 30: My reel went viral; here's what happened next

Write the Damn Book Already

I've always said that if I ever went viral, it would be for something stupid. I'd be filmed saying something grammatically incorrect. Or trip and fall face-first into the concrete in front of Ryan Eggold (after saying something grammatically incorrect). Apparently, manifestation is truly a thing. The PUNCHLINE I made an Instagram reel. Within 24 hours, it had 1.2 million views. 10,000+ likes. and 6,944 shares. Here's what happened next. THE BACKSTORY It started like any old Monday. Slowly and with (decaf) coffee that I firmly believe wakes me up. Late afternoon, my best friend send me a reel she thought I'd find funny because we have an inside joke about the pronunciation of the word “croissant.” I laughed hysterically and clicked on the account of the stand-up comedian who made it. He only had 554 followers, which I thought was a crime because he's so funny. I screenshot his account and shared it to my stories, hoping that a member of my community of 8 would also be thrilled to discover him. He replied to my story via DM and said thank you. His account had been hacked 2 week prior and he was starting all over. I thought, "How can I better share him with my community (of 8)?" I could repost to my feed (but to repost a reel I figured I'd have to download some new app I didn't know how to work) or I could try one of those duet things. The duet option made more sense. It was quick and didn't require that I download a new app. So I made a ridiculous duet of me "reacting" to Dylan's hilarious reel. I never thought anyone beyond my community of 8 would see it (or care). If I'd known this would happen, I would've used better lighting and put on mascara (and put my new book, a CTA, or the mere mention of what I do in the caption!) Within an hour, the reel went a little viral. It hit 162k views in 8 hours and was up to 1.2 million by the next morning. I couldn't keep up with my activity updates. After 30 hours later, it had 1.2 million views, 10,000 likes, and 6980 shares. (My previous reel, posted earlier that morning) had 172 views and 12 likes. The post before that? 8 likes. And the one before that? 6. Now, saying “it's no big deal” is like saying “hitting the NYT bestseller list is no big deal.” (Kind of.) But it's not a big deal for the reasons you might think. In this episode of Write the Damn Book Already, I break down my experience and explore why thinking that anything is a magic bullet is dangerous. It's important to explore our expectations and assumptions when it comes to going viral, hitting a (real) bestseller list, having a million followers on social media, or quickly (and non-methodically) growing an email list of 20,000. The lessons (so far) in a nutshell Sometimes, 12 likes on a post or a reel brings an interested (and, with any luck, kind) new subscriber or invested follower, while 9,974 likes brings nothing but a number. When you put yourself out there (intentionally or otherwise), be prepared. Many of the comments on the reel were so mean that I deleted them. There will always be someone who says something illogically unkind. It's almost never about you. My delete/block/ignore game is strong, but strangers saying horrible things to/about you sucks. And I'm 50! It hurts my heart to imagine how much this affects teenagers. Sometimes, it's best to focus on the one new friend or connection you make that you might not have otherwise connected with instead of the expectation for how many things you'll sell or new followers/clients/admirers you'll instantly receive. In this case, I made a wonderful new connection (the creator of the original reel). He's working on a book. (Who isn't? And why haven't you joined Book Writing Made Simple yet? {wink}) Several people I shared the original reel with (before I made the duet) laughed out loud, which made me happy because spreading joy is one of my favorite things to do (besides making up new words). Interesting statistic: The reach outside my followers was 1.2 million. Reach TO my followers was 0. ZERO! THE ONLY PEOPLE I INTENDED TO SHARE THIS WITH WERE MY FOLLOWERS, AND NONE OF THEM WERE SHOWN IT! I find this most perplexing. In short, I'll never understand the algorithm, which is fine since I've never had a strong desire to understand it. There has been a small uptick in activity on my IG account. The reel I posted a few hours prior (about book writing) went from 172 views to 477 and from 12 likes to 17. Yay? If the increased 5 likes on a reel are from people who got value and will be more compelled to keep writing, FANTASTIC! If even one of the new 130 followers in't a robot and will contribute to my community? GREAT! Otherwise, this was fun, but by no means any sort of magic bullet (those don't exist, by the way.) This reel, which is getting 53429% more plays than any of my last 5 reels, has nothing to do with book writing. It has nothing to do with…anything really. It feels WEIRD to be so seen for something so obscure when I work day-in and day-out to get out a message that matters to me! But hey, maybe this is the universe's way of giving me a boost. If so, I'll take the good, leave the not-so-good, and carry on! It must be REAL HARD to be sponsored or an influencer or otherwise rely on your views for compensation/validation. It also must truly suck some days to be well-known and have everything that comes out of your mouth be criticized or outright attacked by someone. Even the word “croissant” can be weaponized! Both "success" and "failure" are a flash in the pan, and we can control very little of the narrative. Think back to most American Idol winners and runners up. Where are they? Rihanna's half-time performance? All anyone was talking about was whether she was pregnant --- not her makeup line (which she was clearly promoting). No no one is talking about it anymore because she didn't perpetuate the conversation. The onus is on the creator to sustain the momentum of anything and be able to hold it. People hit the New York Times bestseller list, and then there's an expectation that they keep that momentum going even if they aren't sure how to do so. But it's nice to get to DECIDE whether we want to figure out how to sustain the momentum of something, not be expected to. The notion that any of us has to do anything in order to realize "success" is absurd. Some authors LOVE touring and imply that it's required if you want to be successful. You either love the idea, or you don't. Either is fine. Colleen Hoover doesn't do the circuit. Neither does Liz Gilbert. You could argue that they've gotten to the point where they don't have to, but you could also argue that if they don't work to stay present, they'll be forgotten. That's not happening. We can always find at least ONE win from every experience. Mine? Thank God I didn't go viral for saying something grammatically incorrect. *** Are you ready to make some bold moves as an author (or aspiring author)? Playwright, Producer, Director and Actor Tyler Perry's latest epic, A Jazzman's Blues, is now streaming on Netflix. It was the first screenplay he ever wrote over 25 years ago. Set in Georgia, it stars actors Ryan Eggold (“Dr. Max Goodwin” on the NBC series, New Amsterdam), Joshua Boone, Solea Pfeiffer, Amirah Vann, and Austin Scott in a story of forbidden love and family secrets that stretches from the 1940's to the 1980's. Throw in the couple's forced separation, “Leanne”, the female lead passing herself off as White & marrying a prominent White man, her mother “Ethel”, played by Lana Young, a tantalizing murder-mystery spiked with dazzling musical numbers choreographed by the legendary Debbie Allen, music composed by Aaron Zigman, and a nod to the Holocaust in “Ira”, Eggold's character; and you have another testament to Black American music, resilience and storytelling that is very different from Perry's previous comedic works. A Jazzman's Blues also explores the shared experience between American Blacks & Jews and their strong connection during the Civil Rights Movement, reminding us that love conquers all, including racism. Hailed for his humanity, Perry transformed himself from flat broke and sleeping in his car to one of Hollywood's foremost screenwriters and comedians, reaching Billionaire status. As Accredited Media, I had the privilege of attending A Jazzman's Blues TIFF Red Carpet Gala to chat with Perry about why making this film was on his bucket list, how it might just be the mark of a new chapter from him and how his faith & conviction carried him through. I also spoke to the rest of the cast about what attracted them to their roles, and the movie's meaning & purpose. One of Perry's best friends, Oprah Winfrey, even dropped by. Thunder Force: Funny and worth watching. I liked the teen girls better than the adult superheroes. I hate it when nice people make asses out of themselves for comedic value when they're funny enough not to play the fat card. Melissa McCarthy as Lydia Berman and Octavia Spencer as Emily Stanton? What a waste of talent from both of them. The entire movie should have been made with Tai Leshaun as Teen Emily and Mia Kaplan as Teen Lydia. That would have been much better. Those girls are funny and can act! The Blacklist: I hate this show. I love this show. I hate to love this show. I love to hate this show. I am obsessed with Megan Boone as Agent Elizabeth Keen and her beautiful imperfection. I am obsessed with James Spader as Red in this. And, I watch it for Hisham Tawfiq as Dembe. Everyone else is fungible, though Aram and Samar really work for it. Also, Ryan Eggold as Tom Keen is pretty keen. Country Comfort: Season 1: I loved this show. Katharine McPhee is an angel and this show tugs heartstrings in a very honest, lovely, funny, kid-friendly, and family-friendly way. I don't even know what it's about. It doesn't matter. It's country, it's sexy, it's funny, and it's filled with music and cameos. Lupin: Part 1: Is Lupin a spy, a thief, a murderer, an assassin, a hero? It's hard to know. Lupin is directed like a Young Adult series but it's deadly and violently serious. That said, Omar Sy as Assane Diop is a goofy dreamboat, I'm in love with Ludivine Sagnier as Claire, and Etan Simon as Raoul holds his own with his own sort of swag and style all his own. Superbe! The Crew: Season 1: This is a terrible show and I hate-watched the first season. And I really love Kevin James. Might be really popular with the NASCAR kids. The Magicians: This is how much I love The Magicians: I bought the book and read it and the audiobook and listened to it. And I am working through the second book. Lost me a little. Also, season 3 episode 5 A Life in the Day is burnt into my brain and my heart and I loved it so much. It's the one in which Quin and Eliot live an entire life together while making a magic mosaic. Amazing. It's about an elite and exclusive witch and wizardry school, but debaucherous. An actually gay and fabulous Harry Potter. Worn Stories: Limited Series: This series is such a breath of fresh air. Very cool, intimate, and simple. I literally laughed and cried. It's about people and an outfit, a piece, or a way of dress, and it's very sweet and emotional and compelling. It's soft-core clothes porn. Ginny & Georgia: Season 1: This series is anti-Gilmore Girls, for sure. All the sweetness and happiness is the result of unintended consequences and good luck and good hearts; however, it's a really rough ride and filled with darkness I can't reveal for reasons of spoilage. This show amazed me. Antonia Gentry as Ginny is a gorgeous chameleon and Brianne Howey as Georgia is this generation's Julia Roberts, just darker and more complex. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chrisabraham/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chrisabraham/support

After an introduction which is sure to anger the large anti-vax population, Samantha suggests New Amsterdam, a show destined to fill the Grey’s Anatomy shaped hole in your heart, Indy is deep in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and then we preview next week’s movie; the 2010 Romantic Comedy Leap year. New Amsterdam is an American medical drama television series, based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer, that premiered on September 25, 2018 on NBC. The series was created by David Schulner and stars Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher, and Tyler Labine. Avatar: The Last Airbender, known as Avatar: The Legend of Aang in some regions, is an American animated television series produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios. It was co-created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, with Aaron Ehasz as head writer. It aired on Nickelodeon for three seasons, from February 2005 to July 2008.[2] Avatar is set in an Asiatic-like world in which some people can manipulate one of the four elements—water, earth, fire, or air—with telekinetic variants of the Chinese martial arts known as "bending". The only individual who can bend all four elements, the "Avatar", is responsible for maintaining harmony between the world's four nations, and serves as the bridge between the spirit world and the physical world. The show is presented in a style that combines anime with American cartoons, and relies on the imagery of mainly East Asian culture, with some South Asian, New World, and Inuit and Sireniki influences.   New Amsterdam Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvMCbzrToAo&ab_channel=JoBloStreaming%26TVTrailers Avatar: The Last Airbender Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rz7EsOua-D4&ab_channel=FramePlay-MediaConservatory Leap Year Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrlQBsd8LsE&ab_channel=MovieclipsClassicTrailers   An article on HIV Vaccines: https://www.pharmaceutical-technology.com/features/will-there-ever-be-an-hiv-vaccine/   Watch recent & upcoming ILTYS2 movies here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mvRuuLuwjP26n_138AYxnsW0Zj-iGkqc?usp=sharing

Today’s guest is one of the lead actors from my favorite hit show from NBC, New Amsterdam. Jocko Sims plays Dr. Floyd Reynolds in this brilliant show. He is a talented actor, (you may have seen him in the show Crash, The Last Ship) he is a  producer, incredible cook, hails from Texas, but resides in NYC. I wanted to interview someone from this show, because it is one of those shows that touches your heart. They are using their platform to talk about issues of race, healthcare, and mental health with love and compassion.    Last year I had the opportunity to travel to New York City with the Today Show Parents team and previewed the second season of New Amsterdam.  While there I met some of the staff of this NBC hit show. I had previously written a blog post about how one of the phrases Dr. Max Goodwin played by Ryan Eggold asks in each episode, “How can I help?” It impacted me in such a way that I want to live my life with that question always on my lips as I meet people. So after talking with NBC, they reached out to Jocko who was so gracious and kind, you will fall in love with him.    Thank you to Jocko for letting me ask heartfelt questions about how we can be a community that helps each other, no matter what. I hope you are touched by this conversation and it inspires you to help others in your own way.    Thank you to our sponsor RECREATE-SOLUTIONS who assist leaders and organizations get started, unstuck, and get healthy. Thrown into this impossible situation, the people who had been aboard the flight will be forced to figure out how to pick up the pieces of their personal lives, as well as the greater purpose that is their destiny. Tuesday, Sept. 25   FBI (CBS) FBI,from Emmy Award winner Dick Wolf, is a fast-paced drama about the inner workings of the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. These first-class agents -- including Special Agent Maggie Bell (Missy Peregrym) and her partner, Special Agent Omar Adom 'OA' Zidan (Zeeko Zaki) -- bring all their talents, intellect and technical expertise to tenaciously investigate cases of tremendous magnitude, including terrorism, organized crime and counterintelligence.   New Amsterdam (NBC) Inspired by Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in America, this unique medical drama follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin (The Blacklist's Ryan Eggold), the institution's newest medical director who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. Not taking 'no' for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital -- the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the President of the United States under one roof -- and return it to the glory that put it on the map. Wednesday, Sept. 26   A Million Little Things (ABC) They say friendship isn't one big thing, it's a million little things -- and that's true for a group of friends from Boston who bonded under unexpected circumstances. Some have achieved success, others are struggling in their careers and relationships, but all of them feel stuck in life. After one of them dies unexpectedly, it's just the wake-up call the others need to finally start living. Along the way, they discover that friends may be the one thing to save them from themselves.   Single Parents (ABC) This ensemble comedy follows a group of single parents as they lean on each other to help raise their 7-year-old kids and maintain some kind of personal lives outside of parenthood. The series begins when the group meets Will (Taran Killam), a 30-something guy who's been so focused on raising his daughter that he's lost sight of who he is as a man. When the other single parents see just how far down the rabbit hole of PTA, parenting and princesses Will has gone, they band together to get him out in the dating world and make him realize that being a great parent doesn't mean sacrificing everything about your own identity. Thursday, Sept. 27   Murphy Brown (CBS) Candice Bergen and series creator Diane English reunite for the revival of the groundbreaking comedy about the eponymous broadcast news legend and her biting take on current events. Now in a world of 24-hour cable, social media, "fake news" and a vastly different political climate, Murphy returns to the airwaves with her original FYI team: lifestyle reporter Corky Sherwood (Faith Ford), investigative journalist Frank Fontana (Joe Regalbuto) and producer Miles Silverberg (Grant Shaud). Murphy's son, Avery, shares his mother's competitive spirit and quick wit, and has followed in her journalistic footsteps - perhaps too closely. Now back in the game, Murphy is determined to draw the line between good television and honest reporting, proving that the world needs Murphy Brown now more than ever. Friday, Sept. 28   The Cool Kids (Fox) From executive producer Charlie Day and starring David Alan Grier, Martin Mull, Leslie Jordan and Vicki Lawrence, The Cool Kids is a multi-camera comedy about a rag-tag group of friends living in a retirement community who are willing to break every rule in order to have fun -- because, at their age, what do they really have to lose? What unites them all is their shared belief that they're not done yet -- not by a long shot. These self-proclaimed "cool kids" are determined to make the third act of their lives the craziest one yet. Sunday, Sept. 30   God Friended Me (CBS) Brandon Micheal Hall stars in this humorous, uplifting drama as Miles Finer, an outspoken atheist whose life is turned upside down when he receives a friend request on social media from God and unwittingly becomes an agent of change in the lives and destinies of others around him. Monday, Oct. 1   Happy Together (CBS) Damon Wayans Jr. and Amber Stevens West star in this comedy about a thirtysomething happily married couple who begin to reconnect with their younger, cooler selves when Cooper (Felix Mallard), an exuberant young pop star drawn to their super ordinary suburban life, unexpectedly moves in with them.   The Neighborhood (CBS) The Neighborhood is a comedy about what happens when the friendliest guy in the Midwest moves his family (the Johnsons) to a neighborhood in Los Angeles where not everyone looks like him or appreciates his extreme neighborliness. Cedric the Entertainer stars as Calvin Butler, the Johnsons' opinionated next door neighbor, who is wary of the newcomers, certain that the Johnsons will disrupt the culture on the block. Wednesday, Oct. 10   All American (CW) Think The O.C. meets Friday Night Lights: A talented football player from South Los Angeles earns the chance to play football at Beverly Hills High, and his friends and family clash as the two worlds collide. The show is based on the real-life story of pro football player Spencer Paysinger. Taye Diggs stars as the Beverly Hills High coach. Sunday, Oct. 14   Charmed (CW) Charmed is getting a reboot from creators who previously wrote for Greek and Jane the Virgin. The pilot episodes, which aired at Comic Con, implied that the three witches earned their powers to fight the patriarchy at this moment because the “weakest man” had taken over the office of president.   The Alec Baldwin Show (ABC) Alec Baldwin has been hosting an interview podcast called Here's the Thing for years. His new talk show aims to adapt that model for television. The weekly show will feature lengthy sit-down interviews with celebrities. A pilot episode with Jerry Seinfeld and Kate McKinnon as guests aired last spring. Tuesday, Oct. 16   The Conners (ABC) The revival of Roseanne was cancelled earlier this year. But some of her family members are remaining on the air. ABC confirmed that a Roseanne spinoff starring Laurie Metcalfe as Jackie, John Goodman as Dan and Sara Gilbert as Darlene will air this fall. ABC executives have said the show will deal with a number of the same thematic issues, including financial struggles, but they have remained mum on how the show will explain the character of Roseanne's absence from the series.   The Kids Are Alright (ABC) Set in the 1970s, this ensemble comedy follows a traditional Irish-Catholic family, the Clearys, as they navigate big and small changes during one of America's most turbulent decades. In a working-class neighborhood outside Los Angeles, Mike (Michael Cudlitz) and Peggy (Mary McCormack) raise eight boisterous boys who live out their days with little supervision. The household is turned upside down when oldest son Lawrence (Sam Straley) returns home and announces he's quitting the seminary to go off and "save the world." Times are changing and this family will never be the same.   The Rookie (ABC) Starting over isn't easy, especially for small-town guy John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), who, after a life-altering incident, is pursuing his dream of being an LAPD officer. As the force's oldest rookie, he's met with skepticism from some higher-ups who see him as just a walking midlife crisis. If he can't keep up with the young cops and the criminals, he'll be risking lives including his own. But if he can use his life experience, determination and sense of humor to give him an edge, he may just become a success in this new chapter of his life. Mid-Season / Summer / TBD   Whiskey Cavalier (ABC) Whiskey Cavalier is a high-octane, hour-long action dramedy that follows the adventures of tough but tender FBI super-agent Will Chase (codename: "Whiskey Cavalier"), played by Scott Foley. Following an emotional breakup, Chase is assigned to work with badass CIA operative Francesca "Frankie" Trowbridge (codename: "Fiery Tribune"), played by Lauren Cohan. Together, they lead an inter-agency team of flawed, funny and heroic spies who periodically save the world (and each other) while navigating the rocky roads of friendship, romance and office politics.   Abby's (NBC) Abby's is an unlicensed bar run by Abby (The Grinder's Natalie Morales) in San Diego where the regulars enthusiastically enforce a unique set of rules that give them a sense of community and allow them to avoid the frustrating behavior found at other establishments. The multi-camera comedy will be filmed outside in front of a live studio audience.   The Enemy Within (NBC) In this fast-paced, spy thriller, Erica Shepherd (Jennifer Carpenter) is a brilliant former CIA operative, now known as the most notorious traitor in American history, serving life in a Supermax prison. Against every fiber of his being but with nowhere else to turn, FBI Agent Will Keaton (Morris Chestnut) enlists Shepherd to help track down a fiercely dangerous and elusive criminal she knows all too well. For Keaton, it's not easy to trust the woman who cost him so much. While Shepherd and Keaton have different motivations for bringing the enemy to justice, they both know that to catch a spy... they must think like one.   The Passage (Fox) Based on author Justin Cronin's best-selling trilogy of the same name, The Passage is an epic, character-driven thriller about a secret government medical facility experimenting with a dangerous virus that could either cure all disease or cause the downfall of the human race. The series focuses on 10-year-old Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney), who is chosen to be a test subject for this experiment, and Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), the federal agent who becomes her surrogate father as he tries to protect her.   Schooled (ABC) This spin-off of The Goldbergs is set in the 1990s and follows the hilarious teachers of William Penn Academy - led by Tim Meadows (Principal Glascott), Bryan Callen (Coach Mellor) and AJ Michalka (Lainey Lewis) - who, despite their eccentricities and crazy personal lives, are heroes to their students.   Fam (CBS) Fam stars Nina Dobrev and Tone Bell in a comedy about a woman whose vision of a perfect life with her adoring fiancé and his wonderful family is radically altered when her 16-year-old, out-of-control half-sister unexpectedly comes to live with her.   The Fix (ABC) Attorney and author Marcia Clark co-writes and executive produces a new legal drama about Maya Travis (Robin Tunney), an L.A. district attorney who suffers a devastating defeat when prosecuting an A-list actor for double murder. With her high-profile career derailed, she flees for a quieter life in Washington. Eight years later, when this same celebrity is under suspicion for another murder, Maya Travis is lured back to the DA's office for another chance at justice.   Grand Hotel (ABC) Eva Longoria executive produces this bold, provocative drama set at the last family-owned hotel in multicultural Miami Beach. Charismatic Santiago Mendoza (Demian Bichir) owns the hotel, while his glamorous second wife, Gigi (Roselyn Sanchez), and their adult children enjoy the spoils of success. The hotel's loyal staff round out a contemporary, fresh take on an upstairs/downstairs story. Wealthy and beautiful guests bask in luxury, but scandals, escalating debt and explosive secrets hide beneath the picture-perfect exterior. The show is based on the Spanish series.   I Feel Bad (NBC) Produced by Amy Poehler, this half-hour comedy follows a woman (Sarayu Blue) and her unfiltered takes on trying to have it all. It's based on the book I Feel Bad. All Day. Every Day. About Everything. written by Orli Auslander. Paul Edelstein also stars.   The InBetween (NBC) Following in the steps of Ghost Whisperer, this paranormal procedural focuses on a woman who can communicate with the dead. Harriet Dyer stars as Cassie Bishop, a woman who uses her clairvoyant gifts in order to help the police solve some of the city's most puzzling cases. Arrow's Paul Blackthorne will also star, having left The CW show ahead of its seventh season.   Proven Innocent (FOX) This midseason drama follows an underdog criminal defense firm led by Madeline Scott (Rachelle Lefevre), a fierce and uncompromising lawyer with a hunger for justice. At age 18, she was wrongfully convicted, along with her brother Levi (Riley Smith), in a sensational murder case that made her an infamous media obsession, a household name and a national cause célèbre. Madeline's bold and bullish tactics earn her a number of enemies -- especially Gore Bellows (Brian d'Arcy James), the prosecutor who initially put her away and still believes in her guilt. Despite Bellows' ceaseless quest to see her behind bars again, Madeline will continue to defend others, even as she fights to maintain her innocence and searches for the real killer in her own case.   The Red Line (CBS) From acclaimed producers Ava DuVernay and Greg Berlanti, The Red Line follows the lives of three vastly different Chicago families whose stories of loss and tragedy intersect in the wake of the mistaken shooting of an African American doctor by a white cop. The Red Line cast includes Noah Wyle, Emayatzy Corinealdi and Aliyah Royale.   Rel (Fox) Rel Howery (The Carmichael Show) stars in this comedy loosely based on his life. As Lil Rel rebuilds his life after a divorce, he tries to find love and respect on the South Side.   The Village (NBC) The Village is a brownstone in Brooklyn with exceptionally unique tenants despite its ordinary exterior. Shtick around for the jokes... Is art really in the eye of the beholder? Sterling and Stroili cite some questionable examples. Broadway star Jason Graae (A Grand Night for Singing, Falsettos), and television???s Jim O???Heir, co-star of the hit NBC series Parks and Recreation, are not only interviewed about their careers, but partake in the day???s order of funny business. The live Arts Calendar singles out Caught at Hollywood???s Zephyr Theatre - which examines America???s contentious debate over same sex marriage; and Hoboken to Hollywood at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica, CA - the critically-acclaimed, new, big band musical about Sinatra during the early years. Sterling reviews the world premiere comedy Amy and Elliot at Hollywood???s Stella Adler Gilbert Stage- starring, written and directed by Ryan Eggold of the hit CW TV series Beverly Hills 90210. Stroili reviews Rogue Machine???s The Sunset Limited at Theatre Theater in Los Angeles. Graae and O???Heir recall their worst moments while performing.
