Building great teams is a critical element to building a great business, and so is teaching people to manage for results. My returning guest, Vicki Suiter, with Suiter Business Builders, is a best-selling author and an expert contractor business coach. Today, she shares with us how to build teams that perform at a higher level, that view accountability with a fresh perspective, and that follow through on agreements. What you'll hear in this episode: Operating from expectations rather than agreements results in ambiguity and shortcomings. Vicki explains the difference between expectations and agreements. Make SMART agreements (Specific, Measurable, clear Accountability, Realistic, Time-Driven). The same principles of how you approach managing a well-run construction project are the same principles that, if you apply those in your conversations with people at a micro level, will result in getting a lot more work done. Practice building these principles into your communications and your work culture. A little extra effort on the front end will save a lot of time on the back end and you'll get more consistent results from your team. Our willingness to take responsibility is one of the greatest gifts we have as leaders. Responsibility does not mean shame-blaming or fault; responsibility means the ability to respond. In Vicki's upcoming FREE, LIVE webinar, she will be sharing a checklist for managing agreements with people. Vicki reveals the 3 key things she will be sharing during her webinar that will help you tap into your employees. Connect with Vicki! In today's interview, I talk with Vicki Suiter with Suiter Business Builders about why some contractors she works with have a consistent flow of quality applicants and others that just complain that there aren't any good people that want to work or take responsibility. We drill down to find what makes them different. What You'll Hear in This Episode: Every contractor should be part of a mastermind or peer group, where you have the opportunity to sit down with non-competing contractors to talk about the problems we have and potential solutions. Today's workforce is the best workforce we've ever had, it's just different than in the past. The #1 problem in the industry is finding and retaining key people. When you hire A-players, it is the secret to having more profits, more time, and more fun. The reason it's so hard to find good people is two-fold: 1) everyone is super-busy due to a supply and demand issue, and 2) the next generation of contractors are going into the trades in far fewer numbers. Questions to consider: Are we building the kind of business that makes people want to come and work for us? Are we creating a culture that people are attracted to? The contractor industry should find ways to connect with kids in building more interest and tap into their desire to learn skills in the trades. Millennials want to work in an environment where they feel like they belong, where they matter and have a sense of contribution. This is actually a fundamental desire of everyone and a very important part of building an organization that makes people want to come and work for you. You need to build a team around you that takes ownership of their responsibilities so that if you need to step away from the company, they can run it. Build a culture where your people are accountable to a result. Implement “position agreements”, versus “job descriptions”. Job descriptions reflect a helper position with a task list. Position agreements have the employee own and manage results. Always be recruiting, training, and retaining. People, in general, want to do a good job, and as a business owner, you need to give them the opportunities to succeed. When you implement these steps and your employees love to work with you, they're going to be talking about you, and this will help attract your A-players. Have clearly-defined interview questions before your candidates even show up. Ask open-ended questions. You should be doing about 20% of the talking, and they should be doing 80% of the talking. The cost of turnover for the average employee is about $25,000, so you want to hire well. This will also be less stressful to your employees. When you build a culture where your team is out there talking about what a great place it is to work because they have that sense of belonging, they feel like they're treated well, good communication, they know how to win the game with you, and they get paid well, then people talk about it and want to work for you. Your “people'' are your most important asset. Accountability is critical to the success of any organization, but we often times don’t think of accountability the right way. We sometimes think about it almost like it’s a negative term that we’re going to hold employees accountable, that we’re going to hold people accountable. Accountability is treated as if someone may have done something wrong and there is going to be justice to what they have done. Really the way that we need to think about accountability is through the positive impact that it has on our organizational culture. This is especially true for top performers, in that it will allow them to be more successful through the positive reinforcement of accountability, while helping them reach their goals. On today’s episode of Employer Blueprint Podcast, we’re going to talk about this from an expert in the space of developing a culture of accountability, Vicki Suiter. Vicki is the owner of Suiter Business Builders and has been a business owner for an impressive 29 years. Through her company, Suiter Business Builders, Vicki Suiter is a Coach, Business Consultant, Author, and National Speaker. Suiter Business Builders works with Contractors to allow them to manage their time and efforts more efficiently, make more money, and increase over all happiness through their business. According to Vicki’s LinkedIn profile, the strategies used to help her clients are founded on one idea, “knowledge is power.” Vicki wants her clients to know where they are currently with their business, where they want their business to go, and how to get there by taking critical steps to creating a successful business. Vicki is also the author of a book called The Profit Bleed, How Managing Margin Can Save Your Contracting Business.
