The winding road is littered with old motels with peeling paint, empty swimming pools, and rusty neon signs that burned out long ago. Some rent rooms by the month, some by the hour. Between long stretches of farmland and woodlands, there is a meat-and-three, a gas station, a liquor store, and a mobile home or two. Faded billboards warn of damnation and advertise salvation, as there is not much else to sell in these parts. It is the kind of community decimated by the construction of the interstate highway system in the 1960s, which circumvented many of the two-lane roads and took out-of-state travelers (and their dollars) with them. A sleepy town like this is not where you would expect to find a clothing-optional gathering of an international movement called the Radical Faeries. However, as I learned long ago, you never know what you might find when exploring the backroads of the rural south. Read the original article at www(dot)planetnude(dot)co This is a public episode. The LGBTQ History Project maintains that Don Kilhefner is the most dangerous gay activist alive in America. For over 50 years, he has fought to secure civil rights for LGBTQ people. Without a doubt, the fruits of his work have changed the world. He was a founding member of the Gay Liberation Front in 1970, one of the first organizations to bring gay rights to the general public's attention. He co-founded the Los Angeles LGBT Center, which has become the model of all LGBTQ Centers around the world with a $172 million yearly budget and nearly 800 employees. In 1978, he co-founded the Radical Faeries, a counter-culture network and movement that explores queer consciousness and queer spirituality and is alive and well today all around the world. He has dedicated the second chapter of his life to the exploration of queer consciousness and his community-based psychology practice. We start this interview by discussing the importance of intergenerational connections in the LGBTQ community. Next, we get into a juicy conversation addressing how heterosupremacy defined who we are based on sex, and now it's time to re-envision who we are and what it means to be gay beyond sex. We explored the possible purpose and roles of LGBTQ folks from a historical and anthropological perspective. Two possible roles we identified are the altruistic impulse, and the cooperative principal which Don describes. Don then shares the origin story of the radical faeries and the part he played in starting the radical faerie movement along with Harry Hay. Delightfully we get to learn some of the beautiful details from the very first radical faerie gathering. We end with Don sharing his thoughts on what our community's biggest challenges. This included a concept called "elite capture" meaning we've moved from a grassroots community-based movement to a movement where the elite have monopolization the LGBTQ community and it's fight for rights. This shift is failing, and Don and I consider what needs to change. This is a pretty epic interview with a very epic figurehead of the LGBTQ history!Support the show

Sad news everyone. The legendary club and drag performer Jojo Baby, who for decades entertained people onstage and in every stage including everyday life with their makeup, costumes and puppets died from complications with cancer, they were 51. Today we repost one of our earlier shows from 2007 “JoJo Finds a Skull” when JoJo made the evening news upon finding a skull rolling in a boiling pot of water when shopping for mannequin parts in a strangers home they met on Craigslist. Coming of age in Chicago, JoJo was a big part of our scene in the nightclubs and the Radical Faeries. For many people of our generation JoJo was one of the first entertainers people met in the 90s and early 2000s when they first moved to town. Jojo is survived by his brother Jay Jay Arguellas and so many club performers, artists and drag queens he helped mentor and inspire. Jojo's own mentor was puppeteer and trans pioneer Greer Lankton, whose work with Andy Warhol laid the foundation for a lot of great art, including building the first Big Bird puppet for Sesame Street. Big Bird's mother was a trans woman, and JoJo Baby was Big Bird's sibling. Queer art is a huge part of everyone's DNA, and although they may be gone in body, JoJo's creations, creativity and love is still very much alive. Thank you JoJo for being a part of my life and all our lives. You live on in all of us. You live on in all of us. Please enjoy this encore presentation of Feast of Fun: “JoJo Baby Finds a Skull.” Thank you for all the glitter, glamour and guts. But most of all thank you for the fun and friendship. ❤️

We continue our journey into the intersections of gay liberation and the neopagan movements with a discussion o fEddie Buczynski a young witch, brought under the wing of famed gay witch Leo Martello, who founded the Minoan Brotherhood--combining what he believed to be ancient goddess worship with a new mystery cult for gay men. We then discuss the pagan turn of Arthur Evans, formerly the strategist for the Gay Activist Alliance, with the 1978 publication of Witchcraft and the Gay Counterculture. Finally, we dive into the Radical Faeries, organized by gay rights pioneer Harry Hay, who sought to create a new, gay spirituality. We also our joined by Lisa Grimm of the Beer Ladies Podcast to talk about Margaret Murray and the witch cult hypothesis.SourcesMargot Adler, Drawing Down the MoonMichael Lloyd, Bull of Heaven: The Mythic Life of Eddie Buczynski & the Rise of the New York PaganArthur Evans, Witchcraft and the Gay CounterculturePeter Hennen, Faeries, Bears, and Leathermen: Men in Community Queering the MasculineStuart Timmons, The Trouble With Harry Hay: Founder of the Modern Gay MovementSupport the show

Rebel with a Cause: Remembering Finisia Medrano (part 1 of 3) Disclaimer: This episode is full of obscenities and is probably not safe for work. Additionally, it contains words relating to sexual identity that may be offensive to some. All this vocabulary is not included gratuitously, but reflects the usage of the podcast's subject, Finisia Medrano, a trans woman with a mouth like a sailor. You've been warned. In this special edition of “Voices for Nature & Peace,” I speak with six people who knew Finisia Medrano, aka “Fin,” aka “Tranny Granny.” Fin died on April 3rd, 2020, so this release marks that first year anniversary. Fin was a well-known, or rather, notorious personality in rewilding, wildtending, and primitive skills circles. Her name was both praised and cursed, but even her critics had to acknowledge her experience and knowledge when it came to Native American first foods and how to cultivate them in the wild. She spent about three decades in the western United States, much of it on horseback, getting to know these special plants and their ecosystems. Though of Irish background herself, she had been taught by Shoshone grandmothers in her youth. She often spoke of “the Hoop,” which is an ancient migratory tradition of food gathering and cultivation that sustained Native Americans – and the land itself – in good health for thousands of years until it was violently disrupted by the European Invasion. The Hoop is not dead but is severely threatened, and Fin played an important role in not letting it die yet. Unafraid of controversy and passionate to the core, she offended many. I myself was on her blacklist once but I didn't take it personally. What else can you expect from such a feral creature, so thoroughly discontented with civilization? After all, when we respect what we call “tact,” we usually end up being silent about our collective crimes: genocide, ecocide, etc. Some people were offended by her verbal crudity, but her fierce advocacy for wildtending was not only appropriate but vitally essential. Please note that “Tranny Granny” is a term of affection, not a slur, having been bestowed upon her by some of the “Radical Faeries.” Fin underwent sex-reassignment surgery (as it was then known) to transition from male to female in her younger days, before being introduced to the Hoop. The Radical Faeries are a queer movement dating from the 70's who have been variously described as neo-Pagan, counter-cultural, anti-establishment, anarchist and radically environmentalist and their nickname for her carries no malice. This presentation is not intended to be an exhaustive account of Finisia and her work. Nor did I attempt to interview a set of people who would provide a, quote, "balanced" view. That is, I did not talk to any of her haters. But none of these people were blind to her characteristics and the picture that emerges here can certainly not be described as “fawning.” And you know what? Fin – or Granny, as she always was to me – wouldn't have respected a suck-up job either. This episode is structured around a set of six questions that I asked each interviewee. They are: part 1: How did you meet Fin? How would you describe Fin to someone who never met her? part 2: What did Fin do? / What was Fin's work about? Describe a time you experienced friction or tension with Fin part 3: Can you sum up Fin's message to the world? Do you have a memory of the last time you saw her / communicated with her? The interviewees are: Gabe Crawford, Joanna Pocock, Joshua Dodds, Nikki Hill, Rain and Seda. Two days before an election of historic consequence, the topic "Deconstructing our Illusions" will focus on our role in transformation. We will explore how our practice challenges inherited frameworks of perception such as white privilege, calls us to expand our consciousness, and impels us to act for justice and equality. Examining the life of the Buddha, we will trace how the themes of his life and journey create a path for our own exploration and transformation. ____________ Sister Merry Peter, SPI, is a poet, writer, and former sex-worker who found her vocation through the Radical Faeries in 1987. Yolanda has been honored with induction into the GLBT Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame, and also with two MAC Awards from the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs. A brand new recording, YolandaNanda, is based on her love for mantras of the Buddhist, Hindu, and Sikh traditions. She shares her story of journeying from a Christian background to growing to understand her sexuality and gender to life and spirituality through The Radical Faeries and an interfaith seminary to the music ministry she has today. Don't miss her excellent anecdotes and memorable music! The Episode starts off with 3 Random Facts: Wendy Sheridan teaches us that octopi can change in more ways than most of us may have heard, Mary McGinley tells us about a company's attempt to make broccoli more appealing to kids (epic fail), and Robin Renée speaks of mysterious appearances by a flute-playing André 3000. The News turns to the heart-wrenching loss of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the new Bob Woodward book, Rage, cannabis legalization on the ballot, and a "UFO" over New Jersey. At the end of the show, Wendy, Mary, and Robin enter The Blanket Fort to process grief, think about creativity during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to offer congrats to recently newlywed friends and family. Ryan Loiselle is a non-binary queer person (using he/him or they/them pronouns) and has been exploring radical identity and spirituality since their early 20s. While that journey has involved enculturation as a gay male and initiation into some more organized systems their experience has always been foregrounded by deep interest in expressing and celebrating their own queerness and discovering the inherent magic that can come out of liminal being. Under the name Sister Sharin' Dipity, they became fully-professed member of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in 2003 and continues that work today as the current Prioress of the Portland Sisters. In 2018, he was initiated as a Brother of the Unnamed, an ecstatic spiritual path for men who love men that focuses on service and personal work with ancestors and the deities connected to that path. In his secular life, Ryan is a licensed professional counselor and gender therapist in private practice in Portland Oregon where they also serve as the Clinical Supervisor for Brave Space, a counseling center devoted to supporting a transgender, non-binary and other gender expansive individuals and their families. Episode Highlights Ryan tells us who the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SPI) are, how they began and what they do today. He also tells us how he first discovered them and his path to joining them. They share their ideas about the connection of the Sisters to the Radical Faeries. Ryan talks about how being a Sister shaped his spiritual life and his own queer identity. We discuss how the Sisters help us push and expand our ideas of gender through their own authentic explorations. Ryan talks about becoming a therapist and how he came to focus on gender and identity. They share how they use and practice existential therapy in their practice. We talk about breaking gender role norms, no matter what your sexual or gender identity is. Whenever Harry Hay was referred to as the Godfather of the Modern Civil Rights Movement, he would say he preferred the title Lascivious Uncle of the Gay Civil Rights Movement. Either way, his contributions began in the 1950's and resulted in some of the prominent gay rights organizations that are still creating change today. On an April 7th afternoon, in Silverlake, California the Cove Street Steps were dedicated to Harry Hay and the Mattachine Society for their contribution to journey for equality. I attended the event and where I was surrounded by Radical Faeries, Billies, distinguished political representatives and members of the Silverlake community. Come with me on this journey and you will feel like you are there with us experiencing all the love and hope that is Harry Hay. Speakers include the following: Mark Thompson, Malcolm Boyd, David Edward Byrd, Eric Garcetti and more!

In 2017 Jack Davis retired from being an office worker, which means that he can now devote as much time as he wants to being a visual artist, a witch and a radical faerie. His most recent visual art show, called FAGGOTS, was at the Center for Sex and Culture in San Francisco in January 2019. In December of 2018 he created the dancers' costumes for Winter Circle X, a ritual/performance piece instigated by Keith Hennessy in collaboration with Snowflake Towers. Episode Highlights Jack tells how he first started studying art and education in college, and then got a masters degree in textiles. He started making crocheted penis shapes as his own way of glorifying sexuality during the sexual revolution of the 70's. He shares the history of the word faggot, and about his exploration and usage of “faggots” in his artwork as part of queer liberation. We discuss the public's response to his art, and how censorship and exclusion of his art has been part of that response. Jack uses performance art and ritual activism, such as in "Faggots around the Labyrinth," in San Francisco prior to the 2016 presidential election to protect queer youth. He gives us a brief history of the Radical Faeries, starting in 1979 with a gathering of gay men who were anti-assimilationist, who believe that gay men are different and have a special purpose. Now Radical Faerie community is co-created in cities and sanctuaries around the world, with gatherings that are open to all gender identities. Jack got involved in '82 and eventually became the treasurer of a local division. He was also part of the support team to care for two of the founding members (Harry Hay and John Burnside) at the end of their lives. He offers his ideas about how and why the Radical Faerie communities have been, and continue to be, so influential in queer culture. Jack shares how he uses pagan prayer beads, which have been a significant part of his spiritual daily practice. Contact Jack Davis Contact Jack by email here. In this week’s segment, I’m sharing a paranormal memoir originally published as Jack Daniels Makes You Telepathic. MENTIONED ON THE SHOW Rob Brezsny's Free Will Astrology Cosmos & Psyche by Richard Tarnas HOST LINKS - SLADE ROBERSON Slade's Books & Courses Get an intuitive reading with Slade Automatic Intuition BECOME A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/shiftyourspirits Edit your pledge on Patreon TRANSCRIPT The spirits were especially loud that weekend. You know, normally, I'd say your expectations about clairaudience (your psychic hearing abilities) should be mostly interior and subtle. Just as you have a Mind's Eye, you have a Mind's Ear too -- two of them, actually, you can feel them with your fingertips: find your temples; now move your fingertips back about half an inch until they are directly above your ears but still touching the soft sensitive hollows of the temples' edges. Clairaudience most often takes the forms of whisper and murmur, just at the boundary of imagination: maybe it's a perfect title or phrase that wells up as a creative gift; someone calling your name over the sound of the shower; a conversation like a television heard through a wall; a loop of song stuck in your head, drilling a snatch of lyric like a riddled message for you to solve... Every once in awhile, though, clairaudient sounds are experienced as both profoundly physical and truly external. GHOSTS & GRAVEL Memorial Day weekend, I went camping with a group of my buddies up at a resort in the mountains of northeast Tennessee. Timberfell Lodge is a pretty little holler stuffed with, in addition to the main building that is its namesake, an RV park, a swimming pool, a tavern, cabins and bathhouses, with wooded trails and landscaped gardens tying it all together. I was a late addition to the party and I'm also used to a rougher, more fully off-the-grid version of "roughing it." So, while my friends unpacked (stocked the refrigerators) in their rustic yet air-conditioned shacks, I went off on my own in search of a spot to pitch my tent. In keeping with the tradition of most Gothic tales, someone must wander off on his own and become sufficiently isolated... I exaggerate, of course, a bit ridiculously. The only space large enough and level enough to build my homestead for the weekend was centrally located and right on a major foot-traffic thoroughfare. It was one of those spots you find in a busy campground that's so good you wonder what must be wrong with it that it's still available. I didn't question it too much. I have specialized spirit guides devoted to the task of finding me camp sites, parking spaces, theater seats, short cuts through gridlock, and items of clothing in my size... Technically, they're angels -- little cherubim who race around me like puppies (blue heelers crossed with Tasmanian devils) in wide elliptical comet-arcs. They are the working shepherd dogs of my desires. And I must say, they're often extremely good at what they do. Later, I learned from the neighbors that someone was indeed camped there and mysteriously deserted the spot in the night. Makes me wonder if my l'il cherubs might not be pit-bullies who run ahead and muscle people out of my way. My site was only fifty feet from a faux-Pompeiian bath and the swimming pool where my friends were already beginning to congregate, drinks in hand, while I stomped stakes in the ground and popped up my tent in record time. I stripped out of my traveling clothes, mixed an Olympian Jack-and-Coke, threw on some flip flops and headed toward the pool, by way of the gravel path I kept hearing everyone crunching along. I immediately saw that I had camped just beside a rock garden in the center of the entire property. It was appointed in accordance with its premier position in the landscape -- there was a star-shaped convergence of foot paths from every direction covered in white pebbles; artfully planted flowers and ornamental shrubs; the murky gold and copper of slow-moving koi flashed in a tiny reedy pond fed by a steep series of man-made pools and rock shelves in a creek that rivaled Nature's own design of a mountain stream; a white classical statue of Poseidon holding a real metal trident lorded over the water feature at the end of a Japanese foot bridge beside a Narnian lamppost. Lovely. In my haste to catch up to the party, I didn't stop to examine the memorial plaques that were spaced among the shrubs and stones. As I raced by, faces winked at me from photographs on the ground, glass frames refracting the sun in flashing messages like Morse code mirrors. They might have registered somewhere within my subconscious. Fast-forward through the next few days and nights. Much intoxication, socializing, and general Memorial Day weekend merriment was had by all. We could insert a montage here of jokes and smiles, sunscreen and bug spray, beer and bratwurst barbeques, camp fires and conversations -- usually started with "So, where are you here from?" I must cut in with a director's commentary for just a moment to mention how I never cease to be amazed by my ability to attract, no matter where I find myself or within what degree of diverse company, all manner of shamen, priests, neo-pagans, Radical Faeries, Reiki masters, energy healers, psychics... Lightworkers are moths to each other's shine. At one point someone simply came right up to me and said "Has anyone ever told you they can see your aura?" "Well, yes, indeed, many times. But it usually has more to do with the observer than it does with me. Do you typically see auras?" I asked. "No, not really. At least I've never thought so. But I swear I can see what must be... your aura. I would say I'm just a little drunk, but I don't see it around everyone." "But surely not just around me. Look again. Who else has one?" He slowly and purposefully squinted around at the sunbathers and identified the very people I would have predicted. I was clearly witnessing someone's epiphany about his clairvoyant abilities. He didn't even quite have the vocabulary to articulate what he was realizing, yet some part of him believed that I was a person who might coach it out of him. Amazing how that happens. I had these little mini-sessions and fifteen-minute client consultations pop up all weekend. I really was not "trying" -- I would have been just fine with an anonymous, bourbon-enhanced vacation from mindfulness. JACK & COKE MAKES ME TELEPATHIC (NOT REALLY) Throughout the weekend, I noticed that several people's thoughts seemed particularly loud. Now, I don't consider myself a "mind-reader" by any stretch; for me, telepathy has always seemed to depend most on the power of the Projector. For example, one of our group was a friend of a friend of a new friend I had just met that day, a guy from Atlanta named Michael. Only a few minutes after he joined us at the pool, I was watching him watch people and I could clearly hear his interior commentary. He has a wicked sense of humor, clever word choice, and a comedian's timing... I kept laughing out loud. Everyone gave me that screwed up what are you laughing about face, and when Michael caught my eye, I could see that he knew that I knew what he was thinking. I gave him the snake-eyes finger motion "Right here" -- the hand-sign that says "we're connected, mind-to-mind." "I can totally hear everything you're thinking." "You cannot!" He protested. But it kept happening. I started responding out loud to him as if it was a conversation. It became a bit of a running gag with us. At one point, he "tested" me in front of our friends. "What am I thinking now?" He narrowed his eyes at me in showy concentration and I heard (clairaudiently) a string of expletives. "I'm not repeating that!" "Okay, what about now?" Michael's face took on a softer innocent expression and our onlookers waited for me to translate. Instead of saying anything, I simply acted on his sub-vocal request -- I went over to a nearby grocery sack, rooted around, pulled out a bag of Ruffles, put them back, and dug deeper for the bag of Funyuns. Michael's mouth was hanging open as I walked over and dropped the bag of chips on his lap. "No way! He's good," he said as an aside to our witnesses. "I'm telling you -- you just happen to think really loud," I teased him. This experience really drove home for me the fact that clairaudience (any psychic sense, for that matter) is not unidirectional -- the degree or power or volume of the transmission of information has a lot to do with the unique combination of the two people interacting. So, before you judge and label "how psychic" you believe you are -- your ability as a Receiver -- keep in mind that you may have yet to encounter the right Projector. My mother can read my mind, but I can't read hers; I can only Project. My brother and I can swap moods like we're breathing the same air in a room, but you wouldn't call it information. My friend Seth and I regularly send simple messages to each other on the wind, in both directions, with a fairly decent, even track record on each side. WHAT ARE GHOSTS IF NOT MEMORIES + LOVE? People generally believe I am a social extrovert -- I'm hyperactive in the presence of my friends, and a manic talker, even with strangers. But what others can never witness is the extreme amount of downtime and alone-time I require to maintain any kind of psychological balance. I am constantly practicing invisibility. I spend hours every day wearing earplugs and reading. I wear iPod earbuds in public just so people won't speak to me. I can't stand the sight of a computer screen after 4 pm. I rarely answer the phone without a prior appointment. I require the exact same number of hours of uninterrupted sleep, at the exact same time -- cocooned in white noise -- or I come completely undone. When I'm camping with a group, my favorite time of day is dawn. I like to wake up hours before everyone else and wander about by myself. No matter where I vacation, or how many people are present, there is always a point in the morning when I'm the only one up. On Monday morning, as everyone slept into their hangovers, I had the bathhouse all to myself. I showered and shaved long before first light, and as I made my way back to the tent, I lingered in the Memorial Garden. Most times of day, the white gravel paths were like a highway interchange -- there were so many people rushing to the bathroom or on their way to the pool or dashing back to their cabins... you'd get run over trying to stand and watch the koi. The only sound that morning other than my breath and the birds was the patter of the falling water in the artificial creek. It was nice. It lulled me into a contemplative state of mind. I finally had a chance to study the plaques and photographs, which were now decorated with fresh flowers. I've noticed these types of spaces in many of the places that I go on retreat -- whether it's at a spiritual sanctuary or a campground like this. You know right away that, even though their remains are interred somewhere by their biological families, these are the places of the heart, where they most loved to spend time with their spiritual families. I wondered how someone had come early enough to place the flowers without my seeing them... I compulsively calculated the age of the deceased, based on the dates on the plaques, finding every one of their lives way too brief. And then the obviousness of the holiday and the present moment collided in my awareness. Memorial Day. Here I was remembering people I had never known. Spirits don't haunt the graveyards of their lifeless remains -- they visit the places where they lived, where their happiest memories were made. I felt compelled to reach out to them, just to say Hey. I asked who among them, if any, had died in military service. At that moment, someone came running toward me along the gravel. The sound is unmistakable. Whoever it was was coming at me fast, probably barreling toward the bathroom, and not expecting someone to be silently standing in the middle of the path in the shadows of predawn. The noise, so loud and sudden, startled me. I had half a second to react, pure reflex. I stepped up and away toward the edging of border stones, even as the wind of the runner was on top of me. But whoever it was stopped behind me, playfully skidded to a halt in a noisy spray of white gravel, and embraced me from behind. The force of the impact sent me tipping forward into the hedges, but I was pulled back the other way into a great big bear hug. It knocked the breath out of me. I turned to see who was on top of me, expecting to see someone there that I knew, horsing around and grinning at the shocked look on my face -- There was no one there.

The seventh episode of Faerie Visions, a podcast series about the Radical Faeries, a global movement of queer spiritualists. In a bit of a digression, I dive into the world of Tarot Cards, do some Tarot readings on myself and my friends, and find a little bit of Faerie magic.
A clip from the Faerie Visions podcast. I talk to Endora and Lanier about their introduction to the Radical Faeries over 20 years ago.
The sixth episode of Faerie Visions, a podcast series about the Radical Faeries, a global movement of queer spiritualists. I visit a faerie couple at a house they built on a mountainside. Endora (a rabbi) and Lanier (an architect and hair stylist) tell me about camp, faerie rituals, childhoods in Georgia, and that time the pig people stole the baby Jesus.
The fifth episode of Faerie Visions, a podcast series about the Radical Faeries, a global movement of queer spiritualists. I cross over into the faerie realm when I visit some faeries at their house. There I come across a big kitchen and a costume studio, and I find deeper understanding through The Sound of Music.
The fourth episode of Faerie Visions, a podcast series about the Radical Faeries, a global movement of queer spiritualists. I dive further into the history of the Radical Faeries and discover faeries hiding all over the world. What do Christians, Quakers, and 1920s Vermonters have in common with Faeries? More than you might think.
The third episode of Faerie Visions, a podcast series about the Radical Faeries, a global movement of queer spiritualists. I dive into the history of the Radical Faeries and try to figure out: how the faeries came to be, what Harry Hay has to do with it all, and how faeries have grown into the global movement they are today.

The second episode of Faerie Visions, a podcast series about the Radical Faeries, a global movement of queer spiritualists. I go to a puppet studio to talk to a few Radical Faeries from Faerie Camp Destiny. I ask them what it means to be a faerie, but I don’t get the straightforward answers I expected.
The first episode of Faerie Visions, a podcast series about the Radical Faeries, a global movement of queer spiritualists. As I try to enter the faerie realm, I’m faced with some questions: What is a Radical Faerie? Are they real? (yes) How do you get in touch with a real life faerie? Listen for a few answers, and many more questions.
THE ATTACK FROM THE LEFT This is how the left engages in its assault on the fabric of the civil society. They look for the "soft spots" and then pick a fight. Men have been dressing as women and passing for them since dirt was new. It's hardly an issue for a male passing himself off as a woman in dress and demeanor, to use a woman's rest room. Who would even notice? In their effort to undermine the civil society, the Left chooses its targets wisely. The question is first posed to the public narrowly: Should transgender people be permitted to use public restroom facilities they identify with, rather than be limited to the restroom of the gender they were born to? THE TYRANNY OF THE MINORITY It seems almost ridiculous to be having the conversation for a number of reasons. To begin with, what is the legal definition of transgender? Is the controlling factor in this definition, the gender the individual identifies with or the one they were born to? Is no consideration to be given to their anatomical and genetic circumstance? Is transgender, at least for some, really more of a behavioral, rather than a physical condition? Moreover, how many people are we really talking about here? This is an important consideration, given the fact that 99.7% of all Americans who don't identify as transgender will be compelled to accommodate 3 out of every 1,000 people who at least call themselves, "transgender." The most recent data from surveys including the 2006-2008 National Survey of Family Growth, the 2009 California Health Interview Survey and federal data such as the Decennial Census or the American Community Survey were analyzed by Gary Gates, a distinguished scholar at the Williams Institute of the UCLA School of Law. Those surveys state that about 0.3% of the American population "identifies as transgender". Here's the problem with that: it's a subjective determination and the number of people who truly are transgender is likely to be much lower. Without a clear, legal definition of what is transgender, how could we possibly know who is transgender? In its efforts to dictate federal policy to the states regarding so called transgender people, the Obama Administration has not only politicized the use of bathrooms, but they have issued rules that will now place school children at risk. The risk is not necessarily with a person who is genuinely transgender. Rather, the risk derives from the consequence of not having an objective definition of what a transgender person actually is. Until now, all the discussions have centered on how the individual identifies themselves, leaving that definition entirely in their hands. SEXUALIZING SCHOOLCHILDREN As a practical matter, public school officials will have no way to prevent a male high school senior from showering with a 14 year old freshman female, provided the male declares himself as "identifying as a female." On what basis could that ever be challenged? It also creates conditions where rape and statutory rape are more likely. How will school administrators and faculty police the school showers when they know the blunt instrumentalities of the federal government are arrayed against them? The likely outcome is that school officials will not risk a legal battle that results in the draining of resources from the school system. This will create even more chaos in the school system than already exists. HOMOSEXUALIZING SCHOOLCHILDREN The current controversy over rest rooms and showers in public facilities and schools should come as no surprise. Since he was first elected in 2008, Barack Obama has unleashed the most militant and radical pro-homosexual agenda on Americans. It began surreptitiously in the school system. Early in his first administration, Barack Obama appointed a "Safe Schools Czar" named Kevin Jennings. The title "Safe Schools Czar" is very misleading. Most would look at the term and feel comforted that the President cares about making schools safe for children. But that isn't what the Safe Schools Czar was tasked to do. His job was to make schools safe for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgenders. It was part of Obama's pro-homosexual agenda that was hiding in plain sight and ignored by the mainstream media. Kevin Jennings himself has quite an "interesting" background. A transcript from a 1997 speech shows Office of Safe Schools chief Kevin Jennings in the U.S. Department of Education expressed his admiration for Harry Hay, one of the nation’s first homosexual activists who launched the Mattachine Society in 1948, founded the Radical Faeries and was a longtime advocate for the North American Man-Boy Love Association, NAMBLA. Obama appointed the most radical person anyone could have ever imagined into a position, the Congress wasn't required to approve. Kevin Jennings had a past that was so completely off the charts radical, it's almost impossible to overstate. Kevin Jennings was outspoken in his support of NAMBLA and the repeal of laws governing the age of sexual consent. In 2002, after the death of Harry Hay, Jennings said, "NAMBLA’s record as a responsible gay organization is well known. NAMBLA was spawned by the gay community and has been in every major gay and lesbian march. … NAMBLA’s call for the abolition of age of consent is not the issue. NAMBLA is a bona fide participant in the gay and lesbian movement. NAMBLA deserves strong support in its rights of free speech and association and its members’ protection from discrimination and bashing,” he said. Remember, this was Obama's first appointee for "Safe Schools Czar." Kevin Jennings was the founder of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) organization of Massachusetts. GLSEN held its 10 Year Anniversary conference at Tufts University in 2000. This conference was fully supported by the Massachusetts Department of Education, the Safe Schools Program, the Governor’s Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth, and some of the presenters even received federal money. During the 2000 conference, workshop leaders led a “youth only, ages 14-21” session that offered lessons in “fisting” a dangerous sexual practice, where the hand is forced into another person's anus. Fisting kits were distributed to children by Planned Parenthood, another participant in the event (pictured here). There was a heightened sense of security with many Tufts campus police being highly visible in order to stop parents from seeing what occurred at the conference. All of this was the handiwork of Kevin Jennings, the man Barack Obama appointed. Fury erupted in Congress and eventually Jennings was forced to resign his position, but today's actions by the Obama Justice Department and Department of Education are clear indications that Obama's agenda to promote homosexuality in American society has not abated. OBAMA'S RADICAL HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA The Obama administration will send a letter to every public school district in the country telling them to allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity as opposed to their birth certificate. The letter, first obtained by The New York Times, is signed by officials at the Justice Department and Department of Education. It will be sent out to the districts on Friday. While the letter does not have the force of law, it does warn that schools that do not abide by the administration’s interpretation of civil rights law may face lawsuits or a loss of federal aid, The Times reported. "There is no room in our schools for discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against transgender students on the basis of their sex," Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in a statement. “No student should ever have to go through the experience of feeling unwelcome at school or on a college campus,” Education Secretary John B. King Jr., said in his own statement. “We must ensure that our young people know that whoever they are or wherever they come from, they have the opportunity to get a great education in an environment free from discrimination, harassment and violence.” Under the guidance, schools are told that they must treat transgender students according to their chosen gender identity as soon as a parent or guardian notifies the district that that identity "differs from previous representations or records." There is no obligation for a student to present a specific medical diagnosis or identification documents that reflect his or her gender identity, and equal access must be given to transgender students even in instances when it makes others uncomfortable, according to the directive. Status of "Bathroom Bill" Legislation | InsideGov "As is consistently recognized in civil rights cases, the desire to accommodate others' discomfort cannot justify a policy that singles out and disadvantages a particular class of students," the guidance says. The administration is also releasing a separate 25-page document of questions and answers about best practices, including ways schools can make transgender students comfortable in the classroom and protect the privacy rights of all students in restrooms or locker rooms. The move was cheered by Human Rights Campaign, a gay, lesbian and transgender civil rights organization, which called the guidelines "groundbreaking." "This is a truly significant moment not only for transgender young people but for all young people, sending a message that every student deserves to be treated fairly and supported by their teachers and schools," HRC President Chad Griffin said in a statement. Earlier this week, the Justice Department and the state of North Carolina filed dueling lawsuits over the state’s controversial “bathroom” law, with the Obama administration answering an early-morning lawsuit filed by Republican Gov. Pat McCrory with legal action of its own. In their suit, the DOJ alleged a “pattern or practice of employment discrimination on the basis of sex” against the state over the law requiring transgender people to use bathrooms that correspond with the sex on their birth certificate. McCrory, in his lawsuit, accused the administration of a “baseless and blatant overreach” in trying to get the policy scrapped. "This is an attempt to unilaterally rewrite long-established federal civil rights laws in a manner that is wholly inconsistent with the intent of Congress and disregards decades of statutory interpretation by the Courts," the state’s suit, filed in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of North Carolina, said. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The Fire in Moonlight: Stories from the Radical Faeries (White Crane Books) Selected contributors will read from their pieces in the important new anthology The Fire in Moonlight, including anthology editor Mark Thompson, Stuart Timmons, associate editor Richard Neely, Allen Page, David Cohen, Trebor Healey, Michael David, and Ian MacKinnon (schedule permitting). The most valuable possession a people have is their story...their history. Many years in the making, with over fifty contributors from around the world, Fire in the Moonlight is the first anthology of its kind. Beginning with Walt Whitman and Edward Carpenter in the nineteenth century and moving through the liberation movements of the late twentieth, Fire in the Moonlight speculates far into the twenty-first. It offers a timely compendium of culture wisdom, provocative wit and challenging sensuality. This collection gives witness to a groundbreaking movement that painstakingly emerged from the Gay Liberation era. Rooted in the history of radical visionaries, this little known, essential community informs the modern world with new meaning, offering fresh definitions of faith, identity, purpose and gender. Fire in the Moonlight is a series of personal reflections on who the Radical Faeries are, where they've been and where they are going: Radical Faeries in their own words. It is about how a movement has changed lives--and how Radical Faeries contribute to healing a fractured Earth. THIS EVENT WAS RECORDED LIVE AT SKYLIGHT BOOKS AUGUST 13, 2011.

Gensha Lin Maslow is a zen priest in the tradition of Shunryu Suzuki, ordained by Chikudo Lewis Richmond in 2006. Deciding he just wasn't a theist at age 17, he abandoned his Jewish religion of origin, searching for a more direct and enriching spiritual practice. He began practicing Zen Buddhism at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in 1980. There were several years of deep involvement with the Radical Faeries in the 80s. He practices with the Vimala Sangha in Mill Valley where he aspires to attain nothing (except a partner, when the time is right, like now). He is a hospice nurse.
