In 1914, Mary Wigman created a dance that would shatter the rules about what dance was supposed to look like. A trio of images by Charlotte Rudolph of Wigman came through the Photography department at Sotheby's recently. Aimee gets to the bottom of what these images had to do with the Suspiria remake and why everyone was so upset about modern dance.
Contrary to rumors Magento Open Source is indeed alive and here to stay for a long time to come. Willem Wigman talks about the two different support models of Magento Open Source and how this will benefit the community. Long Term Support from Adobe will be called the Magento Open Source LTS version. This is a very common practice in Open Source software. The Short Term Support or STS version of Magento will be supported by the community. We also talk about the benefits of a cleaner more streamlined version of Magento Open Source LTS and how this will increase the ROI of merchants all over the world using any version of Magento.

Here we are! After getting hung up on the wonderful world of Hyvä themes and the amazing future in store for the Magento frontend, we're finally back to talk about the Magento revolution. You might also call it the “Magento fork” or “The Mage-OS distribution”. Willem has much to say about where Magento might be in 3-5 years and how MOSCA's plan is moving forward. SHOW NOTES 1:30 Where will Magento be in 3 years, and why was the open letter written and published in September of 2021? Why are “microservices”, “SaaS” and “PWA” all sore spots for Willem? Why is Willem not ready to give up on the Monolith structure of Magento Open Source and why did they decide that the open letter was the right path to take to change? 8:55 What were the core intentions behind creating and maintaining a Magento Open Source clone? Is it more of a precautionary action to keep Adobe in check, or a hostile takeover? 12:15 How has the community responded to this movement and is that response changing as time goes on and the idea normalizes? 12:58 The Poland event in September, big names who showed up at the drop of a hat to talk about the future of Magento, and the history of where this whole idea really started (back when Ben Marks was involved). 14:58 Adobe's initial response to their plans and how “fork” really wasn't the right word to describe their plans. 16:33 The actual technological explanation of what the Mage-OS Distribution will look like, how it will be structured, and when the community might gain access to it. Willem gives us a peek behind the curtain on what needs to happen regarding funding, leadership and the logistical aspects of this startup. 21:14 Joseph asks Willem to step outside of the Magento community for a few minutes and talk about a few things from a truly objective perspective. Joseph brings up the great merchant exodus that we are seeing away from Magento, and asks Willem for his honest opinion on where Magento is at in its lifecycle. 29:17 Several months after the call for a Magento Open Source roadmap, Adobe came out and defined their roadmap, indicating that OS would only be getting maintenance fixes and security fixes in the future. Willem shares his opinion on what we can see from Adobe in the next 5 years and what our responsibilities might be to pick up their slack. 32:53 What conversations are taking place in the task force meetings regarding community and ongoing innovation. 39:01 Why the Magento community is so special, and why it's a shame if Adobe doesn't “celebrate and harvest that energy”. 41:41 How the market has changed in the last 5 years and where Magento is really positioned in the market at the moment, taking into account the Big Commerce and Shopify boom at that time.
We thought this episode was going to be about MOSCA and the Mage OS Distribution, but we spent so much time talking about something else (something very important) that we decided to do two episodes with this special guest. Willem Wigman has been around the Magento ecosystem for about 10 years. After freelancing, pushing hard with Magento 1, and then burning out on the transition to Magento 2, Willem found himself back to working on Luma and hating it. He developed such a disdain for Luma that he ended up deciding to fix it by reinventing the wheel, and that is where we got Hyvä, a Magento front-end that makes sense. Why does it make sense? Let's dive in and see! SHOW NOTES 1:12 Who is Willem Wigman, where did he come from and why does Hyvä exist? 3:26 Why shouldn't every website be on PWA and how to decide if that is the right option or not. He believes every website doesn't need to act like an app, and that loading speed, situational logic and actual purchase psychology all have to all be taken into account. 9:14 Why exactly is Hyvä so much better than Luma? 12:12 Why it's actually GOOD that Hyvä is not free, but is paid tool, and how we can look forward to this great tool expanding and improving quickly. Willem explains his vision for a “Hyvä ecosystem”. 16:24 A quick introduction to MOSCA and the Mage OS Distribution, what Willem thinks about Monolith vs Microservices/de-composed front-end. He explains why a lot of people started to give up on Adobe's plan for Magento and why he thinks this new energy in the community is helpful. 21:06 Willem suggests that if Hyvä isn't a good idea for a merchant, it's pretty likely that Magento wasn't a good option in the first place. Joseph and Willem just plainly say it: “Magento 1 to Magento 2 is a downgrade (regarding loading speeds)” and they discuss the realities of when Magento isn't the right fit at all. 26:56 When is Hyvä probably NOT the right solution? What will you have to re-write with Hyvä, as opposed to when you use PWA solutions, etc. 30:55 What have been the biggest challenges agencies face in the first 6 months using Hyvä and what should they anticipate when they incorporate this new tool? Willem compares it to learning a new dialect within the same language, and insists that most skeptics end up changing their mind, accepting any minor downsides for the sake of all of the great upsides. 34:14 How Hyvä is built with debt and legacy code in mind, and defends against decay and future maintenance. Due to its stable format, Hyvä has seen very few unhappy customers, and many of their customers have said that 1000 euros is a “steal” for what they are getting. 40:19 Willem's mysterious book recommendation for us! “Good friends buy each other this book” -Willem Check out Hyvä HERE Connect with Willem: LinkedIn Twitter Connect with Joseph: LinkedIn Twitter Do YOU have an incredible debugging story to share? Welcome to Talk Commerce. Where we talk about how merchants, agencies, and developers experience commerce. This week we interview Willem Wigman with Hyva, the revolutionary new Magento theme that will change your life! Did I say change your life? Yes, this shows how powerful the Magento community still is and continues to be! We talk about the origin of the name, not to spoil anything, but it's good. We discuss the impact on site speed for merchants and how Google is changing the game for your website and how it is ranked. If you are a merchant you need to share this episode. A Wellington axe-throwing company has taken aim at getting a liquor licence.Sweet Axe Throwing has applied to Wellington City Council's Licensing Committee for an on-premises licence, claiming it won't make things dangerous. The conditions of the licence would see customers limited to two drinks each over a two-hour axe-throwing session, with any intoxicated people barred from participating.Anyone who consumed alcohol before they arrived would also be turned away from the venue.Police have objected to the application, raising concerns over how drinking would impact the safety of the activity.Sergeant Jo Wigman said her main concern was the high risk involved in axe throwing."Alcohol itself is a risk-increasing factor. It directly impacts behaviour, and increases the risk of harm."Wigman confirmed her own research hadn't uncovered any instances of injuries related to axe-throwing in New Zealand, or overseas.Sweet Axe Throwing Co-owner Lloyd Bombell said it was the perception of danger that made axe-throwing exciting, but in reality it was completely safe."We run a very tight ship. It's a controlled environment, with an 'axe-pert' [instructor] monitoring the situation closely every second. You'd be safer in here than crossing a busy street."He said alcohol would only make axe throwing risky if it was consumed without the strict regulations they were proposing."If we just gave someone an axe and said 'fire away' then of course it would be dangerous. But we work closely with our customers to make sure they do it properly. Two drinks over the space of two hours shouldn't impact that in a significant way."Bombell said the licence would be extremely helpful in offering the venue as a sociable, relaxed, fun environment for various functions."Corporations want to come here for team-building exercises, we have birthday parties, stag-dos. Why would they choose us if we can't satisfy all their amenities?"Liquor licensing inspector Joanne Burt said she agreed that when you took axe-throwing out of the equation, Sweet Axe Throwing had proposed safe and responsible conditions for supplying alcohol. She said her concerns related to spectators at the event, and the possibility of them passing unfinished drinks to others in the throwing area.Sweet Axe Throwing general manager Krista Mackie argued that customers were always being watched by three people - the server, the "axe-pert", and a staff supervisor."People listen to us because they don't want to get kicked out, or asked to sit and not participate. When you threaten to take away their toys, they're more likely to follow the rules."She said the only injuries that had occurred at the venue was when someone slipped and bumped their head, and another time where someone needed a band-aid after picking an axe up the wrong way.The hearing is expected to continue tomorrow.text by Kasharn Rao
Part 2 of 2.This is the second part of my conversation with Luke Wigman.Part two, covers everything Luke’s done since his accident in Afghanistan and the rehabilitation he went through – including those incredible events he’s taken part in and how he’s become a world-class endurance athlete.Full show notes can be found in part 1 of this conversation.Join the Connections Untold community:InstagramFacebook
Part 1 of 2 “Don’t be scared to fail at something…the more you do, the more you get out your comfort zone, the stronger you become.”Luke Wigman has an incredible story to tell. Back in 2011 whilst on a routine foot patrol in Afghanistan, he stepped on an IED bomb, which led to the eventual medical discharge from his distinguished career as an RAF Regiment Gunner.Nearly 10 years on, Luke is now a world-class endurance athlete – taking part in global events, such as the Invictus Games and the World Marathon Challenge (7 marathons, 7 continents, 7 days!), all for incredible causes to help other veterans, as he was once helped. One of the things that really stood out for me in this conversation is the opportunities that Luke has really grabbed on to though connection, and though collaborating and meeting other people. In doing so, Luke has created chances and put himself in the way of luck. It goes back to that message that Luke, and many of my other guests on the show have said time and time again, that if you want make positive changes in your lives, you have to be willing to put the time and take the necessary small changes, to get there. So whether it’s thinking about resilience, realising how lucky we are to be alive, asking for (and accepting) help when we need it, getting out of our comfort zones and not being afraid to fail - I hope you get as much out of this conversation as I did. To do full justice to Luke journey, I’ve split the episode into a part one and two, part one details Luke’s career it the military and everything leading up to his accident, eventual rehabilitation and medical discharge from the RAF. Part two, covers off everything he’s done since – including those incredible events he’s taken part in and how he’s become a world-class endurance athlete. Big thanks to Luke for sharing his story with us and for the incredible work he does to support others.Join the Connections Untold community:InstagramFacebookUseful Info:Luke’s websiteLuke’s new challengeOther episodes you may be interested in:#4 Marion Hart: Our negative experiences don't define us#5 Greg Searle MBE: If not now, when? PROPHECY OF HOUSE LIVE STREAM
In 2014 verscheen haar tweede bundel De eerste letter. Postuum verschenen in 2019 Verzamelde gedichten.

In 2011 he stood on a landmine in Afghanistan which left considerable damage to his left leg, after numerous operations and a long rehabilitation program Luke managed an amazing comeback and started to challenge his limits by entering the hardest marathons in the World. He took 2nd place in both the North Pole and Antarctica Marathons, and 1st place in the even more challenging Volcano marathon. He didn’t only succeed at marathon distance as he took gold in the 1500m in both the 2012 & 2014 Invictus games which contributed to his team being awarded the Helen Rollason award during the 2014 Sports Personality awards night which is presented for the outstanding achievement in the face of adversity. If that wasn’t enough Luke went on to compete in the world marathon challenge of completing 7 marathons in 7 continents in 7 days, clocking and average pace of 3:09:32 which was the fastest time recorded for this event from someone in Britain. This is a really gripping and inspirational story of never giving up, staying positive, and trusting in the process, its episodes like this that make the podcasts worthwhile truly outstanding....

Revisiting the Rite: The Rite of Spring Centenary Conference
Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps is arguably the most influential score composed for dance in the last century. Premiered to an unsuspecting Parisian audience in 1913, this Modernist ballet was subtitled ‘Scenes of Pagan Russia,’ a moniker that evoked the rituals of pre-Christian society. Vaslav Nijinsky’s groundbreaking choreography shocked audiences with its visceral embodiment of primeval spirituality, and Sacre has subsequently been re-staged by a wide variety of classical and contemporary choreographers across the world, including Mary Wigman, Martha Graham, Pina Bausch, and Maurice Béjart. This paper focuses on a distinctly non-Western version of Stravinsky’s score, namely Min Tanaka’s Butoh choreography of 1987. Tanaka’s work, with stage settings by Richard Serra, was premiered a year after the death of his mentor Tatsumi Hijikata, one of the ‘founding fathers’ of the Butoh form. In this paper, I draw comparisons between Tanaka’s stark movement vocabulary and Western embodiments of Sacre, including those of Bausch and Wigman, in order to chart a cross-cultural dialogue in dance performance since the 1913 premiere. With his controversial work, Nijinsky explored new levels of primitive ritualism in performance. He induced a company of classically trained dancers to revert to a primordial form of movement, enacting their ritual through a new choreographic vocabulary derived from elements of Central Asian folk dance. Stravinsky’s score has come to be an ongoing source of inspiration for choreographers exploring non-Western ritual from 1913 to the present day, and I posit that Tanaka’s Sacre symbolises the logical conclusion of this dialogue between Eastern and Western performance. I argue that avant-garde dance performance throughout the twentieth century has been shaped by an amalgamation of cultural elements, and that, ultimately, this inter-cultural dialogue represents Nijinsky’s enduring Modernist legacy.
War of words, live from the Crossing Border festival 2006. Typeradio discussed with 4 guests the limitations and strength of the written and spoken word. The guests included the most discerning book designer of the Netherlands Tessa van der Waals, furiously renowned European poet Menno Wigman, Fluxus legend Willem de Ridder – whose spoken words have no limit and worldwide acknowledged type designer Gerard Unger – whose knowledge of the letter form exceeds all others. Listen to Menno Wigmans point of view. Writing is imitation. The do-it-yourself attitude. Graphic Designers are punks. Bembo, Charlotte & Dolly.
