The History of Chemistry

In which we consider what, really, is a chemical bond. Lewis and Langmuir promoted the idea that bonding was sharing of electron pairs. Then we hear about Slater, Hellman, and Ruedenberg's discussion of how covalent bonding works. Kossel and Lewis also introduced ionic bonding. Finally Drude and Lorentz offered metallic bonding. But there are more chemical bonds: the hydrogen bond, the halogen bond, the mechanical bond, the van der Waals force, multi-center bonds, and metallophilic bonds.Support the Show. In this talk, I will discuss the applications of cavity electrodynamics for controlling many-body electron systems. The focus will be on achieving strong coupling between cavities and collective excitations of interacting electrons at Terahertz and IR frequencies. As a specific example I will consider a cavity platform based on a two dimensional electronic material encapsulated by a planar cavity consisting of ultrathin polar van der Waals crystals. I will also discuss how metallic mirrors sandwiching a paraelectric material can modify the transition into the ferroelectric state. Finally, I will review a general question of theoretically describing ultrastrong coupling waveguide QED. I will present a novel approach to this problem based on a non-perturbative unitary transformation that entangles photons and matter excitations. In this new frame of reference, the factorization between light and matter becomes exact for infinite interaction strength and an accurate effective model can be derived for all interaction strengths.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why Yudkowsky is wrong about "covalently bonded equivalents of biology", published by titotal on December 6, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. confidence level: I am a physicist, not a biologist, so don't take this the account of a domain level expert. But this is really basic stuff, and is very easy to verify. Recently I encountered a scientific claim about biology, made by Eliezer Yudkowsky. I searched around for the source of the claim, and found that he has been repeating versions of the claim for over a decade and a half, including in "the sequences" and his TED talk. In recent years, this claim has primarily been used as an argument for why an AGI attack would be extremely deadly. I believe this claim is factually incorrect. The quotes: I'm going to show the various versions of the claim I found below, with the relevant sentences bolded: To plausibly argue that "humans" were intelligently designed, you'd have to lie about the design of the human retina, the architecture of the human brain, the proteins bound together by weak van der Waals forces instead of strong covalent bonds Yudkowsky discussing the flaws of evolutionary design, in "the sequences" blog post "dark side epistemology". It was obvious years before Nanosystems that molecular nanomachines would in fact be possible and have much higher power densities than biology. I could say, "Because proteins are held together by van der Waals forces that are much weaker than covalent bonds," to point to a reason how you could realize that after just reading Engines of Creation and before Nanosytems existed. Yudkowsky discussing AI interventions on the alignment forum. A lot of the advantage of human technology is due to human technology figuring out how to use covalent bonds and metallic bonds, where biology sticks to ionic bonds and proteins held together by van der Waals forces (static cling, basically) Comment on a post discussing technology and AI. Algae are tiny microns-wide solar-powered fully self-replicating factories that run on general assemblers, "ribosomes", that can replicate most other products of biology given digital instructions. This, even though the proteins are held together by van der Waals forces rather than covalent bonds, which is why algae are far less tough than diamond (as you can also make from carbon). It should not be very hard for a superintelligence to repurpose ribosomes to build better, more strongly bonded, more energy-dense tiny things that can then have a quite easy time killing everyone. Yudkowsky's example scenario for how an AI could extinct humanity, on twitter Can you build your own synthetic biology, synthetic cyborgs? Can you blow straight past that to covalently bonded equivalents of biology where instead of proteins that fold together and are held together by static cling, you have things that go down much sharper potential energy gradients and are bundled together, people have done advanced design work about this sort of thing. Yudkowksy's Ted talk, again discussing AI capabilities, during the Q&A section. I broadly endorse this reply and have mostly shifted to trying to talk about "covalently bonded" bacteria, since using the term "diamondoid" (tightly covalently bonded CHON) causes people to panic about the lack of currently known mechanosynthesis pathways for tetrahedral carbon lattices. Yudkowsky's response to my recent article a few weeks ago, talking about how to refer to potential advanced nanotechnologies. Summarising the claim As you can see, Yudkowsky has repeated this claim several time over a time period spanning 15 years to just a few weeks ago, in very high profile contexts. These quotes all make roughly the same argument, which I will sum up as follows: Proteins are held together by weak van-der-waals forces, which are weak forces, akin to static...

This episode shows the give and take between applied physics, that is, the development of the laser, and chemistry, that is, media in which laser action can take place. We start with Albert Einstein's idea, Valentin Fabrikant's doctoral dissertation and (initially failing) patent. But simultaneously Charles Townes came up with a maser, producing microwaves, and his brother-in-law, Arthur Schawlow's idea of extending the maser into the visible wavelengths, overlapping with Gordon Gould's idea of a laser (and the word laser). We then shift to Richard Zare's work with lasers in chemistry experiments, followed by several inventors of the chemical dye laser. We speak of laser-induced spectroscopy and van der Waals complexes of molecules. Support the show Support my podcast at https://www.patreon.com/thehistoryofchemistry Tell me how your life relates to chemistry! The Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution explains the behavior of gases nicely, and went well with the Ideal Gas Law of Clapeyton, until van der Waals modified the Ideal Gas Law a bit. We learn about absolute temperature and Lord Kelvin. Van 't Hoff connects the gas laws to osmotic pressure and ionic solutions. We hear of Raoult's Law and freezing-point depression. Finally we arrive at Svante Arrhenius's (barely passing) doctoral dissertation on ionic dissociation, and his activation energy for reactions.Support the show

This is episode 13 and its October 1975. Two SADF Task Forces are busy in Angola, Foxbat is in the south East, the other - Zulu has just taken the port of Namibe and will now head north aiming at Benguela and Lobito after initially swinging back eastwards to the main road. We begin this episode with an update about what had developed with Eddie Webb and his Foxbat Task Force. The name Foxbat emerged as both Webb and the other senior officer, Commandant van der Waals, were both parabats – Foxbat was also the name given by NATO to the latest MiG fighter produced by the Russians. Lots to chew on there. So by October 25th 1975 Foxbat was on its way westwards from Bailundu to meet up with Task Force Zulu at some point before the all-important date of 11 November. That was when elections were taking place in Angola despite the fact it was now well on the way to an intractable Civil War. But the politicians in Pretoria stressed to the SADF that they had to vacate the country by then. As we’ve discussed, the political strategy was muddle-headed and created major problems for the frontline soldiers fighting this operation. Foxbat’s blueprint for the attack by the way was a photostat of a road map. They used the road and by the evening of 25th had arrived at the bridge over the Queve river just east of the small town of Alto Hama. After a quiet night, the Task Force left before dawn on the 26th heading to Luimbale which lay on the main road east and was about 180 kilometers from Lobito where Task Force Zulu was heading further westwards towards them. Webb was aware there were around two companies of FAPLA infantry based in Luimbale about 250 strong so decided to approach the town from the south and left the road. He’d also received information that the FAPLA units were supported by two T-34 tanks and three armoured cars.

Stephen Wolfram answers general questions from his viewers about science and technology as part of an unscripted livestream series. Questions include: What is the difference between fusion and fission? - What is the difference between regular helium, like those in balloons, and Helium-3? - Can you explain the physics of why ice is slippery? - Would you mind explaining Van der Waals force? - Does quantum mechanical tunneling play much of a role in nuclear fusion? - Are you planning on ever releasing the raw data of all the possible simple programs you generated while working on "A New Kind of Science"? - When Andromeda collides with the Milkyway, what's going to happen to Life on Earth, neighboring planets and solar systems? - What advice would you give to someone who is starting to study analysis from scratch (i.e. from Zermelo Fraenkel axioms and so on)? - Speak about Einstein's correct prediction of the perihelion of Mercury when people realized Einstein's theory was better than Newton's. What might be the equivalent for the Wolfram Physics Project? - What gave you the confidence to study physics since you were a kid?. What advice would you give to a kid interested in learning that has an internet connection and a Raspberry Pi? See the full Q&A video playlist: https://wolfr.am/youtube-sw-qa

When I was in 11th grade, I came in 3rd in the New Jersey Science League Chemistry II competition. Which was odd. I wasn't one of the best chemistry students in the state, by far. I wasn't even close to being the best chemistry student in my high school. Hell, I wasn't close to be the best chemistry student in my chemistry class.

Nobel Prize and - as of this week, Copley Medal - winner Andre Geim outlined in Nature today his vision for the next generation of super-materials. Chemist Prof Andrea Sella joins Adam to explain how the discovery of graphene may have been the start of a remarkable new class of tailor made materials technically known as 'Van der Waals heterostructures'.This week on Show Us Your Instrument, Prof Sophie Scott introduces the MRI machine and explains why you never press the 'quench' button, unless you want to blow the roof off. Finally, an exhibition on Antarctic architecture opens on Friday 26th July in Glasgow, commissioned by the British Council and curated by The Arts Catalyst. We talk to Hugh Broughton who designed the new Halley VI base, a Thunderbirds inspired building, perched on top of stilts, on top of skis.Plus, Adam calls the current Halley Base Commander, Agnieszka Fryckowska, to find out what it's like to live and work during three months of darkness.Producer: Michelle Martin.
