Are we tapped out? Do we have any emotional investment currency left to continue the deposits in the purple bank? Time to try and Restump Podcast the shattered pieces of Sunday's spectacle against the Swans.Well, that wasn't the most pleasant Sunday arvo we've ever had! It's difficult to think we put in that sort of performance, and not only on the back of last week against Geelong, but we had the Cold Play song! Cold Play indeed. Did the wrong people get the wrong messages.Ugly is in the eyes of the beholder, but winning ugly and losing ugly are poles apart. The ability to win ugly is the sign of a good team, whereas losing ugly, like we did last week against Geelong and for much of Sunday's game, tells a completely different and worrying story. It's not the losing that has Freo fans outraged. We can deal with loss standing on our heads. No one can endure the hardships of losing like we can. But there's losing and there's losing. It is the way we're losing that has gutted us. Something is missing and it feels psychological, possibly communicative. There is a loss of the connection and cohesion we saw often last year. There is little fluency in our play, there appears a self-preservation aspect at times and, while unintentional, there seems some dismissiveness about our form and results in the pressers and interviews. Maybe repetition breeds unwitting complacency?Suggesting calm because it's only round two is a little ignorant. For a team who is now at a stage all us fans and the club believe it is, “its only round two” is a damaging excuse of the past. And hanging our hat on the fact that we, unlike last week, brought intensity this week... I'm sorry, but that actually should be a prerequisite for every player, in every single team, in every single game, and not something to be praised for.To be brutally honest, the scoreboard flattered us at 1/4 time. Will Hayward kicked two behinds and Tom Papley kicked one. We were competitive but by no means did we have a genuine four goal lead. The spectacle was such that had we fallen over the line to win, the same questions and fears would be there, albeit with a sigh of four-point relief. We don't have a hard edge, an ability to dig in and wrench back momentum and then we don't have the capacity to put teams to the sword when we do have the ascendency. To give us some sort of reasoning for the performance, I'd like to make a point that we were up against last year's grand finalists. But against us on Sunday there was no Errol Gulden, Callum Mills, Robbie Fox, Luke Parker, Justin McInerny, Harry Cunningham or Logan McDonald. Admittedly we have a few important outs but weight of numbers tells a story. We've obviously got some serious issues that require sorting out and rectifying in rapid time. Last year 13 wins were required to make the finals and 15 wins were needed to finish top four. We've now got two less games to get it done, if we're to play in September. To try and end on a positive note, Jaegar O'Meara did a pretty handy job on Isaac Heeney and has started the year in very good fashion. Josh Treacy is doing everything he can, even if he ended up in the ruck. And if we want the ball being handled cleanly and efficiently and delivered on a silver platter, get it to Murphy Reid. Lastly, give us a Chad Warner over a Shai Bolton and Kozzy Pickett every day of the week, although we'll gladly have them all.Well, we want to put this behind us as soon as we can but we can't move on until we've worked through the grief counselling. Let us once again, start the healing. So, if you haven't buried Sunday and blocked it from your consciousness, join us on the therapeutic pod as we try to clear out the negative eSend us a textSupport the show

This week on The Publisher Podcast by Media Voices, we're joined by Will Hayward, journalist, author and columnist specialising in Welsh politics. He also writes The Will Hayward Newsletter, which he relaunched in September after running it for nearly a year as one of Reach plc's Substack experiments, where it won Best Politics Newsletter at this year's Publisher Newsletter Awards. Since going it alone, he's built up more than 3,000 subscribers in just seven weeks, with revenues and subscriber numbers now exceeding its previous iteration. He talks about his journey into covering all things Wales, what he's learned working at the UK's largest regional publisher, and what opportunities he spotted in going solo, even if it meant having to restart his newsletter from scratch. This season is sponsored by BlueConic, the customer data operating system that makes your data work harder, so you don't have to. Whether it's capturing valuable audience insights or activating them with precision, the possibilities are endless with BlueConic's all-in-one platform. While the election of new Labour leader has dominated the headlines, this last week has been a significant week for both outgoing and incoming First Ministers and indeed for all citizens of Wales as the UK Government's Covid Inquiry concluded its first Wales evidence sessions. We are joined by Welsh Affairs Editor at WalesOnline, eponymous author of the Will Hayward Newsletter, and 'serious journalist' Will Hayward. Not only was Will one of the journalists who most closely covered the national & union governments' approach to the pandemic but he also iiterally wrote the book on it in the form of 'Lockdown Wales'.We talk about the key points covered by the inquiry, the points a union-wide inquiry will be unlikely to cover at all, and what the testimony reveals about how the government acted in face of an unprecedented crisis. We also pick up in brief - ahead of our live Twitter/X Space event on 25th March - the Labour leadership contest and result. As its hearings in Cardiff conclude, Felicity Evans takes a deep dive into the evidence presented to the Welsh module of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry in the company of BBC Wales health correspondent Owain Clarke and WalesOnline's Welsh affairs editor Will Hayward
Rishi Sunak endured one his toughest weeks yet as Prime Minister, as he faced the Covid Inquiry and tried to placate rebellious MPs. But he lived to fight another day - as does his controversial Rwanda Bill. For Westminster watchers it was all about the mooted rebellion that didn't materialise, but for Nish and Coco, the real story was the death of an asylum seeker aboard the Bibby Stockholm barge. For Nish, this stark warning about the potentially tragic effects of inhumane policies, should be cause for introspection amongst our political leaders. The news that the final report of the Grenfell Inquiry has been pushed back once again, has frustrated many of those waiting to see justice done. Journalist Peter Apps joins Nish and Coco to discuss the inquiry, and offer his analysis of the systemic issues that allowed the tragedy to happen…and whether it could happen again.Welsh political journalist Will Hayward also pops up to offer an instant reaction to the news that the Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford is stepping down - what's his lasting legacy, and what happens next? Plus find out what Climate Change Minister Graham Stuart has done to make him Nish's villain of the week, while Coco brings some festive cheer with her hero of the week. Welcome to an audio-led edition of Unmade. In today's podcast conversation with Unmade's Tim Burrowes, Will Hayward, CEO of Private Media, discusses innovating within the confines of a challenging media landscape; where the company plans to take Private Media's business model; the economics of publishing; and the personal toll of the company's defamation battle with Lachlan Murdoch.Private Media runs four publications in Australia: news and investigations platform Crikey, small business masthead SmartCompany (which Hayward describes as the ‘reverse of Crikey'), Inc. Australia and public sector-focused The Mandarin. While Crikey might be Private Media's most famous asset - including controversial columnists like Guy Rundle in its ranks, and a mission to “tell the truth and shame the devil” - Hayward is as keen to discuss his passion for niche categories that attract readers who are obsessed with a particular subject matter.“I am very passionate about boring categories. People outside the category think it's boring, people within the category are obsessed with how much information there is. It needs to be sufficiently big so it can support an advertising product and subscription product, if not also an events product. It's likely to be run by someone not from a commercial background, rather than someone likely to go into it because there's money there.”“The category needs to be information dense. I don't think the future of media is more Buzzfeeds, more Vices, those products are really hard to build and run in a sustainable way, and clearly the market is showing that to be true, with Vice going bankrupt and Buzzfeed running at a third of its revenue.”Hayward's interest in publishing niches is one thing he has in common with the executive chairman of News Corp, Michael Miller, who evangelised deep niches when he was interviewed for the Unmade podcast back in March.Hayward also discusses how Private Media is planning its growth beyond its current sites. “Within the centre of the company we are working very hard to build a great media product and make great media experiences irrespective of the category we operate in, and deploy that across all of our products. The obvious question after all that, is if you have built a really good product and growth strategy, why apply it to only four things? Private Media is currently thinking about what inorganic growth might look like in the future.”Hayward also insists he wouldn't change much about last year's2022 legal confrontation between Crikey and Lachlan Murdoch, where Murdoch filed a defamation lawsuit against the publisher for claiming his family were "unindicted co-conspirators" in the US Capitol riots thanks to the role of Fox News in stoking unrest. He reveals that the saga led to him seeking professional help for the impact it had on his mental health.“Litigation is a very tense emotional battle that draws a significant personal cost. it's hard to reflect on that without going into emotional things,” he says on the matter.“I had the cast-iron belief we did the right thing. Will Wales ever become an independent country? The UK's other constituent parts – Scotland and Northern Ireland - seem more likely to breakaway: the Scots voted no to independence in 2016 but it was by quite a narrow margin (55% to 45%) and next time, who knows? In Northern Ireland Catholics are for the first time becoming a majority and with some protestants who would rather be in the EU than the UK, a referendum there could lead to Irish unity. But what about the Welsh? Polls suggest support for independence is well short of 50% but the trend is upward. Welsh journalist Will Hayward has been talking about Welsh independence with Owen Bennett-Jones. Hayward is the author of Independent Nation: Should Wales Leave the UK? (Biteback Publishing, 2022). Owen Bennett-Jones is a freelance journalist and writer. A former BBC correspondent and presenter he has been a resident foreign correspondent in Bucharest, Geneva, Islamabad, Hanoi and Beirut. How does the Scottish independence movement compare to those in other countries? Where do independence campaigns share similarities, and where do they differ? The team is joined by journalist Guy Hedgecoe in Madrid, and Will Hayward, Welsh Affairs Editor for WalesOnline, to compare and contrast the Catalan and Welsh independence movements with Scotland, and get a sense of the political and public sentiment for the movements.
Will Hayward, the CEO of Private Media, an independent publishing company in Australia that publishes several titles, including politics-focused Crikey, recently faced the intriguing and likely slightly terrifying experience of being the subject of a defamation lawsuit filed by Lachlan Murdoch over a Crikey opinion column that held the Murdochs were “unindicted co-conspirators” of the Jan 6 attack on the US Capitol. Murdoch withdrew the lawsuit in the aftermath of Fox settling its case with Dominion, much to Will's relief. We discussed the case, the decision to stand firm against a powerful and angry individual, and how Crikey made lemonade out of lemons by using the case to rally support for the politics publication through subscriptions. We also touch on the impact of Australia's news bargaining code that has wrung payments from platforms and is the model for similar laws worldwide, including in the US, as well as lessons learned from the social publishing era, since Will was in the thick of it.
A simple introduction on Plaid Cymru's website reads: "In December 2022, Plaid Cymru's National Executive Committee asked Nerys Evans to chair a working group whose remit it was to understand the culture within the party and issue recommendations on how to lead change." The Prosiect Pawb report, as it has since been named, has been completed and a full summary published. Its conclusions were were described as "damning" by WalesOnline's Will Hayward and contained no fewer than 82 recommendations to address deficiencies in the party's culture and governance. Some of these issues had existed for many years but it also included complaints of sexual harassment and bullying of staff in the period since 2018 and has ultimately led to the party's leader, Adam Price, stepping down. We discuss the context and timeline of these events and how the party might respond and attempt to rebuild trust with its staff and supporters. Producer/Host: Amy Browne This month: One of the things we’re going to be doing on Maine Currents this year is taking a peak behind the scenes at some of WERU’s public affairs shows- what they cover, how they are produced, the experience and background of the hosts, how you can send in questions, or, in some cases, even get involved. In this pod, our first live podcast recording, we discuss the state of the relationships between UK and Welsh/Scottish governments and the effect Brexit and the personalities of successive UK administrations has had on the effectiveness of government. We hosted this live event on the week that Gordon Brown produced his proposals for reforming the governance of the UK, so we discuss those proposals and how the Welsh dimension is addressed (or not). We also discuss the interim report from the Welsh Government's Independent Commission of the Constitutional Future of Wales and its decision to focus on three alternative visions for Wales: entrenched devolution, federalism, and independence. Ceri and Matt are joined by Prof Richard Wyn Jones of Cardiff University's Wales Governance Centre to discuss and answer questions from the audience, as well as reflect on our previous podcast on the Welsh and Scottish independence campaigns with Gerry Hassan, Will Hayward, and Jess Blair. Kia ora e te whānau. Four years has simply flown by. We both feel such privilege to be part of this community and experience the wonder of how great running can be and the amazing things that this community can accomplish. We loaded in to Hallertau Brewery with the GOAT Andrew McDowall for a celebration of DCR in front of a live audience. We were joined by two people who, whilst being vastly more academically qualified than us, could also smash us in a race, Katie Wright and Will Hayward. We spoke about their running, Big's Backyard, Hong Kong being Wellington on steroids for running, and the general madness of the last couple years. We then turned the argon bite of questioning on ourselves with a listener mail bag which included OUR Greatest Runs Ever. We also got to give away some awesome race entries to Tarawera Ultramarathon, Kepler Challenge, and Hallertau Riverhead Rampage and some sweet Ciele kit. Honestly, this gig is the best. In the second instalment of our 2020 awards, we discuss, debate and decide who should be crowned Athlete of the Year (both Female and Male) as well as Fundraiser of the Year.Female Athlete of the YearSo many people excelled themselves in 2020, and our final three came down to:Nikki Han - in 2019 Nikki became the first female finisher of the Hong Kong 4 Trails Ultra Challenge, but she didn't rest on her laurels in 2020, completing an Everesting on foot as part of the ATG Vertical Challenge, as well as completing the newly-inaugurated “9 Buffaloes” course - the TransLantau 100km course (with 5000m elevation) and the Lantau70 course (3500m elevation), back to back. Read a route report from Will Hayward here.Veronika Vadovicova. Not content with a second place finish at the HK100 early in the year, Veronika went on to set FKTs on the Lantau 70 course and the reverse HK Trail. More than that though, she found time to launch Asia Trail Girls (ATG), which has quickly become the region's leading forum to spotlight and inspire female trail running. Among other things, they organised The Asia Trail Girls Vertical Challenge, which saw teams across the region racking up as much elevation as possible (and the top all-female team climbing over 53,000m) Listen to our recent episode where we talk all about ATG with Veronika here.Xiang Fuzhou, who won the 2020 HK100 in a blisteringly fast 11:28:59Male Athlete of the YearWong Ho-Chung, who pulled off both the HK360 challenge (360km around Hong Kong in 36 hours) and the MacLehose Trail FKT (for which he won FKT of the Year in our first awards episode)Mayank Vaid, who completed the first ever Everestman challenge (swimming the height of Everest followed by an Everesting on bike and an Everesting on Foot) and then went on to complete the HK360Xtreme, which saw him swim 45k around Hong Kong Island, followed by a 215k bike ride and a 100k run. Read more about the Everestman here.Stephen Redfern, who not only finished the HK4TUC in 54:56, but completed a 360k ultra in his garage (listen to the previous episode to hear all about this), set a bunch of FKTs at home in Australia, came second at the Adelaide 12 Hour Race and finished 10th at the iconic Coast 2 Kosci Ultramarathon.Fundraiser of the YearSo many people took the opportunity to raise money for causes close to their hearts in 2020, but three in particular stood out:UFit's Singapore to Santa Challenge, which set out to inspire people to collectively run, cycle or swim the 9,859km to the North Pole, and ended up with participants covering an astonishing 53,095km, raising over SG$18,000 for YMCA of Singapore.Mayank Vaid's HK360Xtreme, for which he raised HK$385,000 for InspiringHK Sports Foundation and Outward Bound Hong Kong. See him mid-swim here.Nia Cooper, who completed her Grand Slam of Hong Kong ultrarunning (Oxfam Trailwalker, North Face 100, HK100 and the TransLantau in four consecutive months) and in doing so raised over HK$105,000 for the Brain Tumour Charity, in honour of her husband (and HK trail community legend) Nic TinworthThanks as always to former podcast guest Mark Agnew of the SCMP for the consistently great coverage of many of these endeavours - it's his articles we've mostly linked to above.Hosted by Ultra Endurance enthusiasts Scott Pugh and Ric Stockfis.

Kia Ora Whanau. Sometimes you get an opportunity that is too good to pass up - like when Will Hayward messages you at 4pm on a Friday with the idea to set up a Zoom call between Hong Kong, Colorado, Alberta, and Palmerston North to reunite the top four Big’s Backyard finishers before the Riverhead Backyard Relaps... And hey, did you guys want to jump on too? One expletive laden outburst (Matt) and heaps of negotiation (Eugene and Will) later and we had the immense pleasure to sit with returning champions Maggie Guterl, Will Hayward, Dave Proctor, and Katie Wright for their first catch up since Big’s and a wonderful conversation about community, the future of the LPS format and how we can virtually connect the world. Apart from Matt and Eugene pinching themselves the whole time there was also talk about a certain 500 mile FKT attempt, how ultra distance runners can empower positive change, operant conditioning as a force for good, and is Lazarus Lake, amongst other things, related to one of the founding fathers of the Grunge scene? Enjoy.
In this episode, Gareth catches up with Wales Online's Will Hayward. Will talks us through a whirlwind couple of years in which he has been named Welsh Journalist of the Year and been promoted to acting Political Editor just days before the Coronavirus lockdown. Will also shares his good and bad advice, and tells us what he thinks are the key issues and challenges facing Wales in the next few years.
Kia Ora Whanau. Together at last. After two months of lockdown, Matt and Eugene are finally able to record in the same room. There’s even a high five. And with just cause. Because this episode includes a remarkable conversation. Matt had the chance to speak to the one and only Dave Proctor, the relentless Canadian ultramarathoner. This is a conversation about running, yes, but it’s mostly about love, determination, how he would run to the end of the Earth for his son. Dave became known to listeners as Fast Dave-Canadian Dave at the after the incredible Big’s Backyard Ultra at Lazarus Lake’s race in Tennessee last year. Talking to him completes the set of the top four, with Maggie Guterl, Will Hayward, and Katie Wright having already featured on DCR. We’ve also got one of the most touching Greatest Runs Ever (with a follow-up email), and tales of hitting the dirt, literally. Enjoy.
In ordinary times, it is already a busy and stressful environment for health workers - but the added pressure of the coronavirus crisis is stretching their resources and resolve. In the latest episode of Alone Together, join Laudable's Matt Millard, and Morven McIntyre, podcast producer at the Edinburgh Evening News, as they pay tribute to the doctors, nurses, porters, radiologists, and all NHS workers who have shown immense dedication and courage in the face of the pandemic.Morven gets the Welsh perspective from Will Hayward, political editor at Wales Online, who discusses the pressures on the NHS, as well as touching on the positive, community stories coming out of the country.Alone Together's Dan McLaughlin speaks to Dr Katie Rogerson, children's doctor and co-director of the NHS Million campaign who says that the health service is “not just for Covid-19 - it's for life”.And Matt chats to Olivia Strong about her Run for Heroes fundraising appeal. It's simple: walk, run or cycle 5k, donate a fiver, and nominated 5 others to do the same. With an initial goal of £5,000, Run for Heroes has moved its target to a staggering £5 million - it's not far off from reaching it.Alone Together is a Laudable production. Presented and produced by Dan McLaughlin, Morven McIntyre and Matt Millard, and edited by Matt Millard.
Kia ora Whanau. This is the first Dirt Church Radio for 2020 and THE DECADE!!!!! 2019 was been a lot..Matt and Eugene find themselves scattered to the four winds this week and phone it in (literally, not figuratively) to run through their best of’s, highs and, well, more highs. We discuss some of the amazing athletes that we’ve spoken to this year and also bring you two interviews this show with Will Hayward, he of second place at Big’s Back Yard Ultra, and Mal Law, Head Wild Thing and who, amongst many other things, is running 1 million feet for mental health. Enjoy.
Just to close the loop on the Big Dog’s Backyard we have Will Hayward on the podcast this week, he gained entry through winning Boar’s backyard Ultra with a respectable 25 loops just scraping past the 100 mile mark. His main aim going into the backyard wasn’t to contest winning but to find out how far he could challenge his own limits, well he done just that and more he looked like he was at deaths door half way through the race and miraculously through a deep strength of resilience and determination he kept showing up at the starting line ready to battle against his own inner voices. It wasn’t long until 66+ became four, and Katie Wright dropped followed by the race favourite Dave Proctor, this left Will as the last man standing and the remaining challenger against Maggie Guterl who went on to claim over all victory. This is a superb competition which really brings out the best in people, if you haven’t already check out podcast #86 from race director Lazarus Lake and podcast #87 Maggie Guterl winner of this year’s Big Dog’s Back Yard Ultra, these three podcasts make for an epic sequence to be enjoyed, and if you listen carefully there are some great tips for those preparing to step up to the starting line of a back yard ultra.
Episode 177 of Talk Ultra brings you an interview with Will Hayward who was the ‘Last Man Standing’ but not the winner at Bigs Backyard Ultra. We chat with Magdalena Boulet about her recent FKT attempt and we speak with Kasia Osipowicz about her 2019 Skyrunning UK season and winning the Skyrunner Uk & Ireland Series.
Kia Ora whanau. Strap yourselves in for the biggest episode of Dirt Church Radio yet. We go all in with a double episode, two full conversations with Katie Wright and Will Hayward, two of the final four left standing at Big’s Backyard Ultra, recently held in Tennessee. This race is the brainchild of Lazarus Lake, the man behind the infernal Barkley Marathons, and is a Last Person Standing event, whereby the competitors take on a 6.7km loop every hour until one person is left standing. Everyone else records a DNF. Both Katie and Will qualified for Big’s by winning a golden ticket entry. Will in Hong Kong at Big Boar’s Backyard and Katie here at home in the Riverhead Backyard Relaps. Both arrived at Big’s Backyard wanting to find and test their limits and it appears both certainly did. Spoiler Alert: Katie and Will were two of the four final competitors, Katie being halted by injury on lap 50 and Will spectacularly timing out on loop 59, thus giving the only other person on course (Maggie Guterl) the victory. What these athletes have undertaken is phenomenal, however what is also phenomenal is the honesty, humility, grace, and insight with which they recount their adventures to us. We’ll let them do the talking. Enjoy.
On Monday evening, Maggie Guterl and Will Hayward set out for the 60th time on a four-mile loop through the hickory-covered hills of central Tennessee. It was dark and rainy on day three of the Big's Backyard Ultra, a running race of fiendish design. There's no set distance, and no set total time, just endless laps around a four-mile course, which participants must complete once an hour. To win, you basically just have to be the last competitor still moving your legs.
