We're celebrating Halloween with a return to the icons that started it all: Celtic witch effigies! Greenwitch continues the exquisite Dark is Rising Sequence by throwing us for a weird, wonderful loop - forget the big stakes Light vs. Dark battle, let's narrow in on a wayward angry painter and a spring holiday in Trewissick. The Drew children and Will Stanton meet, solve a dognapping, and get into mind-altering yet somehow still relatively low-key exploits, all while Cooper's gorgeous prose draws us further into this ancient seaside mystery. We're throwing an all-night crafting party - join us!*Note - some listeners have expressed frustration with a few of our especially meandering book summaries and if you are one of them, this episode is probably not for you! This book is dreamlike and so are we!!

Ira Heiden is an American television and film actor that is probably best known as the character "Will Stanton" in the 1987 horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Ira's other film roles include the 1988 film Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. We were thrilled to be able to chat with Ira for a bit to see what's going on with him currently (with all the craziness going on), but also obviously talk about Nightmare & Elvira. Lloyd and Tim discover the hidden landscapes at the heart of Susan Cooper's magnificent fantasy, The Dark Is Rising. We travel to deepest Buckinghamshire to find Cooper's fictional village of Huntercombe, and the home of her hero Will Stanton, seventh son of a seventh son. Lloyd gets obsessed with the dates of Britain's first motorway for reasons which will only become obvious if you listen, while Tim brings stories of the emerging counter-culture of the late 1960s. We look for Herne's Oak in Windsor Great Park, and go digging around in churchyards for Celtic crosses. Our mission at the 'CuSpec' Book Club is to road test works of fiction that appear to be curiously specific about dates and locations. We go to the places mentioned and see if descriptions are accurate, journey times credible, dates and days all in order. Along the way, we learn things about the book and its author. For early access to ad-free episodes - and exclusive access to all our show notes, maps, photos and videos - please support us on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/curiouslyspecific. It's a young adult fantasy novel about a boy named Will Stanton who embarks on an epic quest to fight against the Dark with the powers of the Light. It leads us to ask, why do kids gravitate towards stories with black-and-white morals? And why do people keep entrusting the fate of the universe to tweens? Of course, we also find time to talk terrible movie adaptations, time tourists, Old Old things, and the trials of having holiday-adjacent birthdays.
