The American West is burning. We need to adapt. But what does it really mean to live with fire? Today's guest has spent years trying to answer that question. Nick Mott is an award-winning journalist, podcast producer (Threshold, MTPR's The Wide Open, Fireline), and now author of the book This is Wildfire: How to Protect Yourself, Your Home, and Your Community in the Age of Heat, which he co-authored with Justin Angle, host of A New Angle and a professor at Montana State University's College of Business. Nick joins WLA's Zach Altman for a conversation about fire - where we've been, how we got here and what we can do now. They discuss forest management and insurance markets, prescribed burns and Indigenous fire knowledge, and how community might be the most powerful firefighting tool we've got. These are heady times for the British Columbia Lottery Corporation. Just weeks after hosting its annual New Horizons in Safer Gambling conference, BCLC was awarded the Best Flagship Responsible Gaming Award – Level 4 in Paris at the World Lottery Association's annual global summit. So, we invited the corp's director of player health, Ryan McCarthy to make his return to the Gaming News Canada Show. McCarthy, who joined BCLC in August 2022, spoke about the recognition by the WLA, and his three key takeaways from the latest New Horizons conference. Highlighted was a keynote address by Dr. Shawn DuBravac on Gambling on the Safer Side: A Different Approach to Creating Competitive Advantage. He also dug into the continued changes around responsible gaming involving not only BCLC, but other provincial lottery and gaming corporations, operators, regulators and, of course, players. For BCLC, that includes its highly acclaimed GameSense initiative which is also used by operators including MGM Resorts and BetMGM. Our conversation not surprisingly included a segment on artificial intelligence. We also asked McCarthy about the collaboration between player health advocates, revenue teams and others within BCLC to maintain balance between growing the business and prioritizing protecting customers. The first Western Landowners Policy Talk, a special monthly edition of the On Land Podcast, hosted by Louis Wertz of the Western Landowners Alliance, featured Jason Fearneyhough, chief policy officer with WLA, and WLA CEO Lesli Allison. Jason joined WLA as chief policy officer in February 2024, after stints as the deputy commissioner of agriculture for the state of Texas and director of the Wyoming Department of Agriculture. The discussion started with Jason sharing his vision for WLA's policy program and strategies for engaging within the current political and environmental challenges, such as recent Supreme Court decisions, national elections, and natural resource challenges. Lesli and Jason went on to share thoughts on federal farm bill modifications, drought and water policy, endangered species like pollinators, wolves and grizzly bears, and various state-level initiatives like New Mexico's Land of Enchantment Legacy Fund. The conversation also highlighted ongoing work to support ranch viability, succession planning, and public-private partnerships for conservation, alongside dealing with increased recreational impacts, forest management, and energy development. Sterling Drake is an award-winning musician whose soulful tunes reflect his deep love of the landscapes, people, and culture of the American West. The media outlet Lonesome Highway probably best described Sterling's music by calling it a “perfect fusion of western swing, honky-tonk heartache, and dance hall treasures.” But you can't really confine Sterling's music to a single, over-arching category– his influences range from country to folk to blues (and more!), and he's toured everywhere from rural Montana to the swamps of South Florida to the music epicenter of Nashville, Tennesse. And it's those wide-ranging experiences and influences that make him such a fascinating and thoughtful character and such a fun person to talk with. - Sterling's family has roots in the southeastern U.S., and he was born and raised in Florida. Music was always a big part of his life, but his early interests revolved around the hardcore music scene and his love of drumming. Soon after graduating high school, he decided to head out west, where he began a long stretch of working on various ranches in several different states. Over time, his musical focus shifted from the hardcore world into the roots genre, and he began to capture the attention of audiences at bars, rodeos, and everywhere in between. Today, Sterling is a full-time touring musician, and as I record this, he is preparing for his first European tour. In my mind, Sterling is a perfect example of how a person can successfully meld passion, curiosity, hard work, and respect to create an entirely unique brand of art that resonates with a large, thoughtful audience. - I met Sterling last summer at the 2023 Old Salt Festival in Helmville, Montana, and I was instantly struck by his thoughtfulness, sense of humor, and his desire to contribute to the culture of the American West. So I was glad to finally connect with him for a podcast episode and have an in-depth conversation about his artistic journey. We started out talking about his upbringing in Florida and why he eventually decided to head west. We discuss his time working on ranches, lessons learned from living and working in Nashville, and why he continues to be drawn to Montana. We discuss his most recent EP titled Jereco Sessions, and why he decided to donate all of the proceeds of that project to the nonprofit Western Landowners Alliance. We also discuss Willie Nelson, books, martial arts, straight-edge culture, travel, and much, much more. - If you want to see Sterling perform in person and have a chance to hang out with him, I'd encourage you to come to this summer's Old Salt Festival, which is taking place June 21-23 in Helmville, Montana. Both Sterling and I will be there, and we're both looking forward to what is guaranteed to be an amazing weekend. - Thanks for listening, hope you enjoy! --- Sterling Drake Jereco Sessions Old Salt Festival Full episode notes and links: https://mountainandprairie.com/sterling-drake/ Ed's Freeflow Institute Course --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 5:00 - Sterling's first memory of music 7:45 - Reflecting on Sterling's childhood in Florida 11:00 - How Sterling became interested in the West, and further discussing Sterling's upbringing 14:30 - Sterling's time in Utah 17:30 - Where Sterling's work ethic comes from 20:00 - How music played into Sterling's early years out West 22:00 - A brief discussion of martial arts and its impact on Sterling's life 25:45 - Sterling's shift into country music 28:15 - When Sterling's country career started to take off 33:15 - Sterling's insider take on the Nashville music industry 40:45 - How Sterling became involved with WLA 44:15 - Discussing Sterling's recent/upcoming album cover 45:15 - Sterling's upcoming European tour 46:45 - Looking forward to Old Salt Festival 52:30 - Where Sterling may eventually choose to settle down 54:00 - Sterling's advice to early career professionals and aspiring artists 1:00:30 - Sterling's book recommendations 1:03:45 - Sterling's parting words of wisdom --- ABOUT MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE: Mountain & Prairie - All Episodes Mountain & Prairie Shop Mountain & Prairie on Instagram Upcoming Events About Ed Roberson Support Mountain & Prairie Leave a Review on Apple Podcasts
This is a special podcast episode that features a conversation between the Executive Director of Western Landowners Alliance, Lesli Allison, and Ranchlands' founder and CEO, Duke Phillips III. Western Landowners Alliance– also known as WLA– is an organization of landowners, natural resource managers, and partners dedicated to keeping working lands whole and healthy for the benefit of people and wildlife. Lesli and her team at WLA support working lands through political advocacy, education, storytelling, events, and more, and they have established themselves as one of the most effective champions for large-scale, private lands conservation. Ranchlands and WLA have been longtime friends and collaborators, and there is a significant amount of overlap between our missions, goals, and philosophies. So it was a great pleasure to connect with both Duke and Lesli to hear their thoughts on the current state of working lands conservation and the outlook for the future. Wolves, a controversial topic for many, and one we discuss from a practical angle in today's episode of The Soft Focus. Kurt Holtzen, a Large Carnivore Conflict Mitigation Specialist, joins Corinne on the podcast today to talk about wolves in the west. Kurt's approach is refreshingly commonsense, informed by years tracking wolves and raising sheep, and devoid of the political spin put on many conversations around large predators in the west, today. He explains how to minimize livestock conflicts with wolves, the benefits of having large predators on the landscape, and how wolves may even be tools for land management, instead of problems to be solved. Corinne and Kurt discuss— Why wolves? The state of wolves in the west todayElk populations in the west, and on working ranchesThe nature and behavior of Grey Wolves Conflicts between commercial sheep producers and wolf bandsKurt's conflict mitigation strategiesAmerican White DogsLED Dog CollarsFox LightsSquawk BoxesWho can benefit from these tools, and why more people should use themKurt's approach to viewing wolves as another piece of the wildlife management puzzleYou can get in touch with Kurt on instagram @wilderness_trails_projects He shares great information about his low-tech conflict mitigation tools, tips, and examples out in the field. Definitely worth a follow if you are curious about interfacing with large carnivores. In 2021, the Montana and Idaho legislatures each passed a suite of bills liberalizing wolf hunting. These changes ignited national debate around fair chase ethics, norms of state wildlife management decision-making, and potential relisting of wolves in the Northern Rockies under the Endangered Species Act. Honing in on Montana, hosts Alex and Jared explore what these recent changes to wolf hunt regulations could mean for wolf populations in the state and for people who share the landscape with wolves. Plus, they seek to understand if a collaborative, ground-up, scientifically and publicly-informed management approach could create more durable solutions that might help prevent pendulum swings in the future. This week's guest is Lesli Allison, founding member and executive director of Western Landowners Alliance. WLA seeks to advance policies and practices that sustain working lands in the West. Many of the most contentious and consequential issues here in Montana are right in the wheelhouse of this important organization. In this conversation Lesli says that if farms and ranches go out of business, we all lose. She points out that a big economic question we have to ask is whether landowners are going to be helped or hurt by outdoor recreation. Justin asks how WLA has addressed issues like housing policy or concerns about new people moving into Montana, and Lesli says the best thing to do is to build meaningful relationships and not take adversarial positions. In this bonus episode, we take you live to the International Wolf Symposium, on October 11th, for a talk by Matthew Collins, Western Landowners Alliance's Working Wild Challenge program associate. Before Matt joined WLA, he conducted research into how local groups, called place-based collaboratives, helped improve adoption of practices that reduce conflict between livestock and large carnivores while pursuing a masters degree at Colorado State University. At the International Wolf Symposium, Matt had 15 minutes to present his entire masters thesis project to a packed room. We think he knocked it out of the park. And fortunately, On Land editor-in-chief Louis Wertz was there to record it. You can find Matt's powerpoint presentation and other supporting info in the show notes on our website, onland.westernlandowners.org/podcast/ Many thanks to Zach Altman, Louis Wertz, Matt Collins and the team at the International Wolf Symposium for making this episode possible.
The big news in the West these days is drought, and specifically drought in the Colorado River Basin. In upcoming episodes, we're going to bring you some really interesting conversations with land stewards who are trying really cool things to deal with the drought, save water, and restore watersheds. But today, we wanted to provide listeners with some of the big picture context and some background to better understand this issue. To do that, we turned to Andy Mueller. Andy Mueller is the General Manager of the Colorado River District. The Colorado River District is a public body that serves as the principal water policy and planning agency for the Colorado River Basin within the state of Colorado. They provide legal, technical and political representation regarding Colorado River issues for the communities of 15 counties in Northwest Colorado which includes the headwaters of the mighty river itself. Andy is a veteran water attorney, and a graduate of the University of Colorado Law School's esteemed program in water law. Before becoming the General Manager at CRD, he spent 22 years in private practice representing agricultural water users on the western slope of Colorado, learning about the issues directly from landowners and producers. Andy recently spoke with Lesli Allison, the executive director at Western Landowners Alliance. Lesli spent 16 years managing a private ranch in the headwaters of the Rio Grande before helping to found WLA in 2012. So she's is no stranger to these issues. Enjoy! Amber Smith is a Montana-based rancher and the Executive Director of Women in Ranching, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to hold brave space, support courageous action, and champion rural women's leadership on the land. Offering a blend of in-person and virtual events, Women in Ranching has filled a unique niche across a wide range of rural communities in the West and beyond. From skill-building workshops to virtual kitchen table chats to multi-day on-the-ground experiences, Women in Ranching offers a much-needed, supportive network for women whose families and livelihoods are closely tied to agriculture and the land. - Amber was born and raised in Illinois, and she met her now-husband Trevor while working at a ranch in Colorado. They fell in love, got married, and today Amber and Trevor have two young children and a successful ranching business in eastern Montana. As you'll hear in our conversation, when Amber was first introduced to Women in Ranching several years ago, she felt an immediate connection to the organization's work– the connection was so strong that she eventually took the helm as the organization's leader. And earlier this year, after several years under the umbrella of Western Landowners Alliance, Women in Ranching became its own freestanding nonprofit organization- an exciting next step for the organization's continued growth and evolution. - Amber and I met more than five years ago on the Antelope Springs Ranch, the ranch that she and Trevor continue to steward to this day. I was immediately impressed with her energy, dedication to her community, and ability to juggle many competing priorities with grace and humor. I've been following her leadership with Women in Ranching for many years now, and it was a real pleasure to have the opportunity to reconnect and have such an inspiring conversation. We talked about the purpose and mission of Women in Ranching and how the organization has evolved in unexpected ways. We discuss some of the specific challenges facing women ranchers and how Women in Ranching works to address those needs. We discussed the pandemic's effect on ranching communities, how Amber tries to find balance in her life, how she has been positively impacted by the organization, some specific success stories, her favorite books, and much more. Be sure to check out the episode notes for a complete list of everything we discussed. - To learn more about Women in Ranching and to support its work, head over to www.womeninranching.co.
