The two books provide readers with practical ideas and techniques to overcome Resistance. Resistance is the driving force behind procrastination. Pressfield is also a former Marine and Duke University graduate. StoryShot #1: Stop Thinking and Begin WorkingYou already have the seed of your next creative project planted or growing. But you may think it would be better if you had more time to think about it, do a thorough study, weigh the pros and cons, and dive right in. To put it another way, you feel you aren't there yet. People never get their ideas off the ground because they think too much. Many individuals regularly engage in this behavior and fall behind because of it. You often search for excuses to avoid doing what is necessary. You can't go anywhere until you act. But you can't sit around and wait for the solution to drop into your lap. You should act and adjust your route after. You can move past a less-than-tidy initial step, as long as you keep changing it as you go. “Start before you're ready.”
When you hire a plumber to stop over and fix a leaky pipe, you need them to show up and try to do their best work, or at least meet your expectations in doing the work. As potters and artists, we may need to practice in showing up in very much the same way. Allowing the customer to have a positive experience with you can be good for sales, lead to more work, and even on days when you might not feel all that happy about what you do. I have found if difficult at times in learning to love what I do and even on days where I may not feel all that passionate about things still show up for myself as a professional and get the job done. In this episode, I talk about a few things that can help you show up as a professional when selling your pottery or art work. I need to practice all of these things for sure and have a bad time with most. One book that helped me a great deal was Do the Work: Overcome Resistance and Get Out of Your Own Way. by Steven Pressfield Do you agree? How do you show up and do the work when you have an off day? Is it possible to show up and make art when it feels like a job? Let me know by emailing me at creekroadpottery@gmail.com. Also, if you enjoy these episodes be sure to subscribe. Ray Bradbury said, “Just write every day of your life. Read intensely. Then see what happens. Most of my friends who are put on that diet have very pleasant careers.” Most of the time, we writers are focused on output. We spend most of our time focused on the content we are creating, whether it's blog posts, podcasts, books, articles, or client work. But the basis for that content has to come from somewhere. There has to be an input. Our work as writers can't be focused just on the output. That's why reading is such a critical part of what we do. In fact, last year I released a podcast episode called "10 Ways to Read More in Less Time," and I encourage you to go back and listen to it. In this episode we talk with Marianne Bitler on general tips to keep in mind while in graduate school. Marianne Bitler is a Professor of Economics at UC Davis. She is an applied microeconomist whose line of work lies within public economics, health economics and labor economics. She has also worked at UC Irvine, the Public Policy Institute of California, the RAND Corporation, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, and the Federal Trade Commission. She is a research associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research and a research fellow at IZA. She just completed chairing a National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Panel on Improving Consumer Data for Food and Nutrition Policy Research for the Economic Research Service, USDA and she is a co-editor of the American Journal of Health Economics. Sebastian Tello-Trillo is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy and Economics at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy in the University of Virginia. Alex Hollingsworth is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Indiana University. Show notes: We refer to a "Failure CV". The path to have a "successful" CV is non-linear, and we usually only see people's success (i.e. published papers) but we don't get to see their failures. Doug Webber, has an example of this on his website. Marianne's book recommendation is "Administrative Burden: Policymaking by other Means" Donald P. Moynihan (Author) Pamela Herd (Author). (click here) Alex's recommendation of the week is to "print like a referee" so that you can see the tables and figures as referees may see them. Sebastian's recommendation is the book "Range" by David Epstein. The thesis of the book is simple, in a world that values specialization, having "range" could prove a very useful tool to pair up with specialization. (click here). The Chop Wood Carry Water Method for Getting Clients: Jason Leister This is really all about Doing The Work. And it is something I struggle to do with any sort of consistency. In this site, I do loads of work, constantly. But the work is of a varied nature and often separate from the work that actively reaches out to the rest of the world, at least directly. I work in cycles, bursts, and unplanned segments It's how my head works. It's also a big part of what makes the rest of life harder for me. Well, harder, in that, I have trouble doing the things that keep my life running smoothly, as well as the lives of those closest to me. I'm unpredictable, even to myself And yet...the work must get done. I guess what I'm telling you is, besides making sure that you do the work, don't punish yourself too harshly as you refine your methods for getting the work done. Too much harsh self-criticism and you may find that the work sops altogether. And that would be bad. Subscribe To OJ Podcast! In this episode of The Expat Money Show, we do something a little different... I wanted to show how working together with a partner and being able to leverage each other's strengths can lead to success. We take a look at the creative side matched with the business side and how splitting roles allows you to focus on "That one thing" that really makes you shine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=C-b4vDUoQf0 We are joined by James Richards and Tim Smith. I first met James Richards through a mutual entrepreneurial friend, https://expatmoneyshow.com/michael-chiang (Michael Chiang) (From https://expatmoneyshow.com/michael-chiang (Episode #11) where he teaches us to create an app from scratch) James invited me for a private screening of Tim's work at his downtown penthouse apartment in Manhatten. I was struck how raw and uncensored the work was. Through many (often inebriated) discussions with James and others, I learned a lot about the underground art scene in New York and the entrepreneurial spirit that runs through it. This was a really interesting episode to create and I hope you get as much out of it as I did... In this episode you are going to learn: From the business side: Tips for curating your own collection as an investment Learning from your mistakes Why having a personal network is so paramount From the creative side: What's hot in the art scene today Even artists need mentors How to be honest with yourself Why you need to always look forward Check out the guy's amazing work at: Tim Smiths work currently on display at Avra Art Gallery: https://avraart.com/ (https://avraart.com/) Website: https://www.theartworkoftimsmith.com/ (https://www.theartworkoftimsmith.com/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/timsmithart/?hl=en (https://www.instagram.com/timsmithart/?hl=en) Their VR exhibition: https://www.eazel.net/ (https://www.eazel.net/) Special shout out Tim's amazing art mentor, Mike Bell: Website: http://www.belldogstudio.com/ (http://www.belldogstudio.com/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mikebelldog/?hl=en (https://www.instagram.com/mikebelldog/?hl=en) Books we discuss: http://amzn.to/2FlIA9Z (Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative) by Austin Kleon http://amzn.to/2Buzaa8 (The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles) by Steven Pressfield http://amzn.to/2Glgc9h (Do the Work: Overcome Resistance and Get Out of Your Own Way Paperback) by Steven Pressfield http://amzn.to/2DD3CRc (Turning Pro: Tap Your Inner Power and Create Your Life's Work) by Steven Pressfield http://amzn.to/2Fk9Ju6 (Principles: Life and Work Hardcover) by Ray Dalio http://amzn.to/2DNBdLt (Market Wizards, Updated: Interviews With Top Traders Paperback) by Jack D. It doesn't matter if you are opening a restaurant and selling food or if you are putting oil on canvas, at the end of the day you are creating something, and really it's the mindset that sets you apart.
