In today's mini-episode, I want to share my reflections on my own career identity, how I might need to rewrite my own narrative to embrace change. This episode was inspired by the book "Adaptation Advantage: Let Go, Learn Fast and Thrive in the Future of work" written by Heather McGowan and Chris Shipley. Selected one of the top 30 Business books for 2021 and the most downloaded book in December 2020. As described by Soundview Book Summary, “The Adaptation Advantage explains the profound changes happening in the world of work and posits the solution: new ways to think about careers that detach our sense of pride and personal identity from our job title and connect it to our sense of purpose.” McGowan believes this is the key to unlocking human potential through creating self-propelled lifelong learners.

Do you find it challenging to communicate the value that you delivered when it comes to performance review time or when negotiating your salary? In today’s episode, I invited Warren James - former engineer and project manager, turned coach and mentor will share his tips on how to prepare for performance conversations, how to articulate the value you bring to an organisation when negotiating your salary, and the compounding effect salary negotiations can have over time. Warren wrote Further Faster – The Ultimate Guide To Accelerating Your Career for young professionals to encourage them to work smarter, not harder. He is passionate about showing them how, with a little effort and forethought, they can achieve more than they ever dreamed possible. Warren’s own career success in engineering and project management saw him ascend the corporate ladder and put himself in a position where retirement was an option at age 35. A career highlight was delivering $50+M worth of work under budget, ahead of schedule, without any recordable injuries while managing a team in excess of 150 people. As a project manager, Warren discovered that he thoroughly enjoyed helping people reach their full potential. He also experienced the burnout that can come from the stress, long hours and immense pressure, needing four months off work to recharge at one point in his career. Now, as a leader, mentor and director of Rapid Mentoring, what sets Warren apart is his unique approach that balances life skills and resilience, coupled with a focus on performance and career acceleration. Hiroko (Hiro) Nishimura is a freelance technical instructor and content strategist in Maryland, United States. I got to know Hiro when I was enrolled into one of her LinkedIn learning courses "AWS for Non-Engineers", and I was so intrigued by how the learning experience was so refreshingly digestible that I felt compelled to look up Hiro online to find out what her background. What I discovered was Hiro’s incredible story of how she overcame incredible challenges to create her own career path, and I knew I just had to invite her onto the show. Hiro’s story is a great example of designing a career centred around her talent stack and unique life experiences, but her journey leading up to freelance career path involved adapting her mindset, adapting how she learned new skills - and it was through learning out loud or learning in public - as Hiro put it.- meant that her work was noticed and changed her trajectory and empowered her to take the leap into design her own portfolio career. https://awsnewbies.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/hirokonishimura/ For more talent stack resources visit https://www.yishanchan.co/links
What comes to mind when you hear the word “manifestation” - which means the act of causing something or bringing a specific result to fruition by thinking and feeling it in a certain way? Are you in the camp that believes in the law of attraction, where visualising an outcome can help create your reality? Or are you in the other camp that believe that it’s the actions that you take, rather than the universe that creates your reality? I believe in both. In today’s episode, I share with you how 3 career related manifestations came true for me, so you can join the dots from the time I visualised it to how they really happened. Originally coined by Scott Adams (creator of the Dilbert comic), the idea of a "talent stack" is that you can combine ordinary skills until you have enough of the right kind to be extraordinary. It’s the idea that you can stand out from the crowd in how you create value by having a unique stack of skills that no one else has. You’re probably wondering... is my talent stack just a list of skills stacked up together? How do I summarise my diverse experiences in a concise way that communicates value? I wanted to expand on Scott Adams's definition of a talent stack, to help you: Describe how you add value with your talent stack Identify what further learning you might like to consider to diversify your skillset & make an impact on the future you envision. In August 2020, I was named finalist in the Women in Banking and Finance awards in the "Rising Star" category, to celebrate women leading by example across Australia's banking and finance industry for creating an impact on gender diversity across the sector. In this episode I share a story that illustrates one of my leadership philosophies, where I helped women build a career pathway towards roles that wouldn't otherwise be accessible for them. This was well before COVID, where re-location was required if you wanted to progress your career. I also share my vision to drive more inclusion in storytelling and fostering more connection in the way we gather in a post COVID world. In today’s episode, I’m going to share why I think you should invest in a good microphone and recommend 4 different types depending on how you run your meetings. Poor audio quality can affect your audience's ability to process what you’re saying. Investing in crystal clear audio isn’t just a matter of convenience — it’s essential for building connection, credibility and establishing your personal brand. Today’s episode is inspired by one of our listeners all the way from Ankara in Turkey, and she shared this question as part of the Listening Tour we did in May. "Digital skills - I know they’re important to have, but where do I start?" If you look up digital skills on Google, you’ll find various lists out there ranging from top 10 skills to some other websites that encourage learning as many as 60 digital trends. Instead of feeling like you need to cross every single skill on these lists.. we should start with asking ourselves: How can we create better outcomes for people and society by considering a digital approach to solving problems? Which of the digital trends are you most curious about to learn that will achieve this outcome? In todays episode I’m going to share 3 quick examples: Digital upskilling to pivot / grow your career Digital upskilling to augment your client experience & gain a competitive advantage for your business Become familiar with how digital trends are shaping our world The most important thing is to learn at your own pace, in a way that suits your style. and practice applying what you’ve learned. It may feel overwhelming at first, but the more you ask “wouldn’t it be amazing if" instead of looking at what’s been done before, the more you'll enjoy learning it your way and at your own pace. How can I build leadership experience in the new normal? To me, play-based learning to children are what “learning sand pits” are to adults. A learning sand pit is an avenue to discover, experiment, create, iterate and imagine in a way that is driven by your intrinsic motivation. I learn better by doing rather than over-thinking it. I learn best when there is skin in the game. Learning is a whole lot more fun when I get to experiment ideas outside of work without the red tape. What motivates me to build a learning sand pit? I’m a big believer in maximising opportunities around you to learn new skills. The biggest reason of all is that I find that when I apply skills across different situations, that's actually what makes me learn more effectively and makes me enjoy the learning process as well. In this episode, I share how I multiplied what I learned with my learning sand pits, built adaptability, agility and skills that are now part of my personal brand. Stop worrying about the "what if.." Instead, ask more of "wouldn't it be amazing if..." and what struggle or sacrifice you're willing to tolerate in order to solve the problems you care most about. Your competitive advantage lies in your ability to find a problem you care about, addressing the things you asked yourself - “wouldn’t it be amazing if” and solving these problems in a way that you want to be remembered for. Don’t forget to check out episode 60 - where I share my favourite formula for getting the ball rolling on a big ticket goal, called the 24-7-1 approach. Once upon a time, before Instagram existed, I ran a blog about lipsticks for 5 years. Yep, that’s right - you heard me. Lipstick!! It was called Beauty Swatch, and my tag line was “helping you find your way through the lipstick jungle”. When I started, I went from not knowing a single thing about blogging let alone how to create a media release or work with PR. I started blogging because I wanted to learn about social media and how it can be used to influence consumer purchasing decisions. Fast forward 5 years later, my blog won awards in the beauty journalism industry (back in the day when blogging actually involved writing rather than a pretty Instagram feed), it was featured on Forbes.com, fashion magazines like InStyle USA and I won an award for best blogger collaboration with Clinique and Mecca Maxima - an iconic beauty retailer in Australia. It will be 10 years ago since I started the blog, and it's for the same reason I'm podcasting now - as a way to build skills to add to my talent stack. If you’re curious to find out more about what I’ve learned about building a brand online, then join me as I share a trip down memory lane and how I now approach branding differently.
