This week, powertrain performance and race data engineer Chloé Lerin joins the podcast from snowy Milwaukee to give us a little insight into something we've never covered before — motorcycle engine development and data analysis. Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inDuring the week, Chloé works as a combustion engineer for Harley Davidson, while on the weekend she moonlights as an Aimsport analysis specialist/data engineer for various teams competing in the MotoAmerica championship.Chloé took the route of education in her career, so we first look into her path towards a master's degree in combustion engineering and how that has affected her career as she went off to work for big equipment manufacturers like John Deere and Cummins. This eventually lead to her current role at Harley Davidson, and it's here that we're able to dig deep into the motorcycle engine development world — there's probably quite a lot of information here that'll surprise you, especially when it comes to the perception of Harley Davidson versus the engineering reality. The conversation gets pretty deep in the weeds when discussing the very fine points of combustion characteristics, knock avoidance, and cam phase control, but to counter that Chloe also answers some very basic questions like; why do Harleys sound like that, and just why do they have to be so damn loud? The latter half of the episode is all about motorsport — Chloe is currently building her own Yamaha R6 race bike and has long been heading to track days, which is where she began working with Aimsport as a data engineer for privateer teams in the MotoAmerica championship. There's some really interesting insight to be found here as Chloe discusses the differences between motorcycle and car data acquisition — some obvious, and some that you might never have thought of.You may or may not have an interest in bikes — either way, the engineering is all relevant and the knowledge that Chloe drops in this episode is well worth taking in.Follow Chloé here:IG: @enginerdissima, @unicornium_engineeringWant to start your own data acquisition journey? Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com I had the pleasure of speaking with Mallory Dobbs of Olympia, Washington in this episode about motorcycle road racing. Mallory Dobbs is a 26-year-old female motorcycle road racer from Olympia Washington. Since she was 10 years old she's ridden and shown horses all across the United States. After showing horses for nearly 14 years she decided she wanted to adventure into new and different hobbies. Some people describe Mallory as an adrenaline junkie as she raced drag cars with her dad at the age of 16. Mallory purchased her very first motorcycle in the summer of 2016. It wasn't too long after that she found herself attending a track day down in California with a bunch of strangers that welcomed her to the track family. At the end of the summer, she formed a race team with them called Hobbit Racing. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Mallory started her motorcycle road racing career the very next summer in 2017 on the Washington Road Racing Association Circuit with her 2003 Yamaha R6. She started competing in only the Novice 600 races, but by end of the season, she was competing in Formula Female and Clubman Qualifier as well. She has volunteered with multiple track day organizations including Optimum Performance Rider Training (OPRT) and 2 fast track days. With such a short motorcycle road racing career, Mallory says she's humbled to have such great success. Her 2020 race season far exceeded her expectations. She competed in 600 Supersport, 600 Superbike, Classic Superbike, and Formula 2 with multiple top 10 and top 5 finishes. Ending the season with top 3 in Classic Superbike! Mallory says the 2021 season is going to be a big one for her, with goals to get enough points to qualify for Motoamerica and race at The Ridge Motorsports Park in 2022. This episode is a cool chat with Jordan Long from J.L. Unlimited. Jordan is a motorcycle enthusiast, club racer, track day coach and motorcycle podcaster. We cover everything from how he got started riding, to how he found riding again when he was in the Navy stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii, and how he eventually got hooked on racing his Yamaha R6 at the club level. We talk quite a bit about MotoAmerica, and the prior history of motorcycle road racing in the US, with the AMA Pro Series and the days when Daytona Motorsports Group (DMG) ran professional motorcycle road racing in this country. We also talk about his 9-year-old daughter’s interest in motorcycles and how he is looking to get her set up with an Ohvale GP-0. And we end off speculating about when the COVID-19 pandemic will be better under control, and when we might expect to return to some sense of normalcy regarding track days and road racing...and we reflect on how lucky we are that the MotoAmerica road racing series takes place in a single country, and that it will be much easier for the organizers to get things back up and running than it will be for the international based series like MotoGP and WorldSBK. Welcome to Front End Chatter Episode 53a, powered yet again by our friends at www.bikesocial.co.uk – and yes, it’s the first of two FECs; 53b will be along shortly. Or at least soon. In the meantime, feast your ears on the will they, won’t they two-wheeled soap opera of Qatar MotoGP – including: how recording BT Sport in hi-def when you haven’t upgraded your package can result in missing the race the argument for and against remounting a crashed bike how Tech3 Yams (pronounced ‘Trois’, but don’t tell Simon) do well at Qatar until a certain Moto2 champion gets carried away disrespeculation about why Crutchlow crashed some nerdy stats about top speed what exactly Lorenzo is packing in his lunchbox plus chatter about World Superbike, World Supersports 600 and 300 at Aragon, and BSB at Donington – including a guest appearance by Martin Fitz-Guintoli... We also say farewell to Sir John Surtees, have a quick tour around Suzuki’s new and rather wonderful V-Strom 650, the less new and less wonderful V-Strom, and chatter about the launch of the least powerful, least torquey, most heavieriest and most expensive Yamaha R6 ever which neither Martin or Simon attended, but about which they have an opinion anyway. Typical. Thanks for listening, your emails will be answered in FEC53b, and please please please get in touch via: email – anything@frontendchatter.com Twitter – @SimonHbikes and @Mufga Facebook – Front End Chatter And, of course, please listen to FEC from our new home at www.bikesocial.co.uk Chatter again soon!
