We've already missed a couple of December holidays, but we think we might just be in time for the final few. In this holiday edition of Yes, YTA, we've sure got a couple of Christmas assholes. Maybe? We‘ve got one AITA poster who might be an asshole for getting a coworker fired right before Christmas. And another poster might just be the worst kind of asshole, a Secret Santa who wants to broaden the horizons of a coworker who is a little too basic. BTW, we had a little audio snafu, but hopefully, it isn't too noticeable. Here are the links to the Twitter and subreddit posts, where you can take a look at what else people are saying and comment if you have something to add. The NEWS:CCSD Trustees held an emergency meeting this morning to take care of routine business that had routine due dates.State law requires meetings outside of the regular schedule to be labeled, "emergency." But we're in the middle of an actual emergency, and there is a lot of confusion and unanswered questions about what students and teachers and parents are supposed to do. At the very least, calling and "emergency" meeting without planning to address some of the issues related to the pandemic was a communication gaffe.Alas, an item was added to the agenda at the last minute to talk about distance learning, which started today.CCSD Superintendent Jesus Jara said that 63 percent of students have access to the internet. Which means 47 percent will have to pick up paper packets at food distribution points, or go without homework.Jara also said he is not abiding by the an order from the State Dept. of Ed to have distance learning in place by today. There are simply too many hurdles to overcome. We'll have more on this tomorrow and Wednesday. The Washington Post is reporting - via its ever changing coronavirus map - that the U.S. had 100 deaths from the novel virus - the single biggest death toll yet.Worldwide, there have been 375,458 confirmed cases and 16,371 deaths - a 4 percent death rate. The death rate from the flu is less than 1 percent. The New York Times is reporting that Republican led legislators in Texas and Ohio are labeling abortion as unnecessary elective procedures, to be stopped while the coronavirus is spreading. Critics argue that coronavirus is not treated in abortion clinics. The INTERVIEW:We talked today to Robin Slonina and Troy Heard. Robin runs a body painting and event company in the arts district. Troy runs the Majestic Theatre in the arts district. Both of them have had to shut their businesses when Gov. Sisolak ordered a shut-down of non-essential businesses. The Majestic had just opened an interactive show - Garden Party - in which actors would physically interact with audience members.Slonina had to cancel a charity event she was planning for One Drop. She also lost income on the canceled Electric Daisy Carnival."My concern is not making it through, it's what's going to happen on the other side. Who's going to want to come into an enclosed space," said Heard. He's also worried about whether people who make up their audiences are going to have expendable income after the pandemic recedes."How long does it take to recover from everyone in the city losing months of work," adds Slonina. In the meantime, both Slonina and Heard are keeping busy, planning for the future. Slonina is launching a TV show on You Too (known as YTA) called Vegas Unveiled. They're producing it with Vegas: The Network. The idea is to get artists to film themselves teaching their kids to do tightrope, or doing acrobatics in open spaces that are now empty on the Strip. It will premiere March 30, and run an hour a night.Heard is doing online interactive online shows, where people can dial in and talk to characters.
As someone who creates content on multiple platforms, like podcasts, live streams, social media platforms, blogs, and YouTube videos I have a unique vantage point when it comes to seeing the back-end of multiple platforms. I get to dive deeply into different dashboards and analytics tracking software and this is cool because I love the fact that we can use statistics to see what works and what doesn’t when it comes to creating content. Out of all of these platforms, when it comes to free tools for tracking organic growth and progress, YouTube is head and shoulders above the rest. I mean, when you look at the big picture, YouTubers almost have an unfair advantage over other content creators because of the level of sophistication we have access to when it comes to our analytics. With that said, classic YouTube Analytics is an old, outdated relic that will soon be sent to the Google graveyard along with many of our other beloved tools. But let's not shed any tears for the old YTA because the beauty of the new Studio Beta is that, unlike some of the other retired tools, we as YouTube content creators get to have our say and share our feedback in what goes into this new analytics dashboard. To resist is futile, so suck it up buttercup and find out how you can use the new Studio Beta to improve your the performance of your channel. Listen to the Q&A with Tom Leung from YouTube and find out what's coming next for creators. Full show notes for this episode: https://ileanesmith.com/23

Why he's awesome: Comedian and overall just a lovable man Comedian and YTA's first-ever guest, Adam Weinrib, joined me for our first phone guest. We learned that he remains faithful to the YTA podcast despite an appearance on the James Fallon show and that he has been writing in Shakespearean prose for his bosses at the sports documentary production company Triple Threat TV (know for their work on ESPN's 30 for 30 series). He gets into his plans for his comedy career, reveals his obscure obsession with performing his sets at fish canneries, and does his best Jack Johnson Waka Flocka "No Hands" impression.Check out more of his musical impressions online on YouTube, and if you're in New York, look out for his shows coming to a fish cannery near you. p.s. Adam and I got rolling on some sports talk at the end of the podcast, which we decided to cut and make into a separate file. Brown Refugee Youth Tutoring and Enrichment (BRYTE) volunteer and former head coordinator and Class of 2012's commencement student orator, Tara Kane Prendergast blessed YTA's "studio" with her presence to talk about all the amazing service she has provided the community. We found about what exactly BRYTE does and about its history, got a primer on her thesis, and learned where her caring nature came from. Co-captain of Brown's South Asian fusion dance team, Brown Badmaash Dance Company, Srihari (Sri) Sritharan joined YTA to talk about their upcoming show. Singer/songwriter Sasha Spielberg stopped by the YTA "studio" to talk about life both as Sister from the band Brother/Sister and as a real sister. We learned how being born laid the groundwork for the band's formation, discussed the relative hardships (and perks) of having a cool/band-playing/older brother, and revealed her secret (no longer) love for silly campy musical tracks. She told us how Brother/Sister's tracks are "the music that would be made by two people who grew up sharing a wall" (tried her best not to misquote you, Theo) and why singing teachers don't always know best.Check out Brother/Sister's Facebook page (you'll like it so "like" it) and download their single "Opposum" off of their EP Accidental Zoo (it's free!). He told us about his undying love for all things Ohio State University (not hard to root for a team that manages to replace a legend like Tressel with Urban Meyer) and reveals that he still has to restrain himself from acting like a little kid in the press box when he's covering live games.Although he doesn't get the byline, sources (i.e. my gut and Dan) have confirmed that these ESPN articles were written by Mr. Alexander. We welcomed Undergraduate Council of Students members David Rattner and Michael Schneider to the the YTA "studios" last week to shine light into life as student government officials. David dropped some info on why, as a member of the Presidential Search Committee, he was drawn to our next president, Dr. Christina Paxson (homeboy may or may not be crushing), while Michael talked about his hand in turning Grad Center suites from this to this. With Spring Weekend a little more than a week away, co-head of Brown University's Concert Agency Gillian Brassil stopped by the "studio"to shed some light into the Spring-Weekend-lineup-making process. We learned how crafting the lineup involves more game theory than a dilema amongst prisoners (thanks, Topaz), what obscure item Das Racist asked for before their concert last year, and about life as a fact checker at the source of men's fashion, GQ. She explained how her love for concerts is most definitely hereditary and that music will remain a passion and not occupation in the future. Get pumped for this year's Spring Weekend by listening to these tracks and make sure and give Gillian a big thank-you hug for all her hard work if you pass her on the street. She's outdoorsy too (evidence above). We're rocking the stripes hard, so hit play and catch up with the totally awesome Gillian Brassil! We made so much eye contact!"Audio: http://ia601207.us.archive.org/0/items/GillianBrasilIsTotallyAwesome/Yta_ep.18GillianBrasil.mp3
The ever-adventurous science writer Steph Yin stopped by the "studio" last Wednesday (4/4) to talk about life as a cheerleader of all things science. We learned about living with Sea Gypsies on stilt houses, the importance and difficulty of evangelizing science, and eureka moments that can lead science lovers away from academia. She gave a big thank you to her parents (as we all should) and encouraged fellow science lovers to look into life as a science writer. Follow her beautiful blog, Ink Chromatography, and check out some of the awesome science writers over at the Radio Lab podcast. That's our girl above tagging sharks like a boss. All in a days work. Comments? Drop them. Without further ado, the totally awesome Steph Yin!Guest: Steph YinSource of Awesomeness: Science WriterFavorite Animal: "Seahorses. Hands down. What other creature has the head of a horse, the body armor of an armadillo, the tail of a monkey, and the eyes of a reptile (they can move each eye independently of the other!)? Also, they have beautiful courtship dances, mate for life, and the males carry the babies! Plus each seahorse can be identified by a unique "crown" (the equivalent of a human fingerprint)"Audio: http://ia701204.us.archive.org/32/items/StephYinIsTotallyAwesome/Yta_ep.16StephYin.mp3
Community and Brown University campus activist Amit Jain stopped by the "studio" to talk about his newest initiative, Brown for Financial Aid (BFA). We learned about how Brown has done a great job with financial aid under Ruth but can't stagnate in its efforts, how Professor Wendy Schiller converted another formerly aspiring biomedical engineer to a political science major, and about Amit's love for education at all levels. We throw a shout out to our friend and co-founder of BFA, Tim Natividad, and found synergies amongst our YTA guests. Head over to BFA's website and sign their petition if their cause resonates with you. They've got videos, pictures, and a beautifully design for you to enjoy. Also, check out their tweets: @brownforfinaid That's our boy doing what he does best as a Minority Peer Counselor with his green notecards in hand. Listen in and drop some comments.
