John is joined by longtime Wall Street eminence and former “car czar” Steve Rattner to discuss the impact of Donald Trump's tariff jihad on global financial markets and the American economy. Rattner explains why the theory of the case animating Trump's protectionist agenda is “disjointed,” “illogical,” and “incoherent,” and its execution has been even worse; why the reputational damage the U.S. is suffering as a result among its allies around the world will be difficult to undo; why the claims by Trump's advisers that last week's abrupt policy shifts were all part of some master plan are ludicrous on their face; and why the endgame of the full-scale trade war now underway with China is impossible to foresee. Rattner also assesses the degree of fiscal irresponsibility Republican budget plan making its way through Congress—and whether the chickens may finally be about to come home to roost when it comes to America's unprecedented debt and deficits.

Today on The Casey Adams Show I sat down with Sam Rattner. In this captivating episode, we sit down with Sam Rattner, the visionary founder of Victory and Showroom, who sold his first company for a staggering $40M at just 23. Sam takes us through his thrilling journey in the online gambling and fashion e-commerce industries, sharing the highs and lows of building a business in a regulated market. He emphasizes the importance of taking risks early in life, being fully informed before pitching investors, and the concept behind Showroom—a revolutionary vertical-specific search engine for fashion and e-commerce. Takeaways -Starting a business in a regulated market requires navigating complex regulatory processes and compliance requirements. - Building an asset along the way is important, as it increases the value of the business and makes it more attractive to potential buyers. - Taking risks early in life, when there are fewer responsibilities, can lead to greater opportunities and success. - When pitching investors, it is important to be fully informed about the business and to have a clear understanding of the market and competition. - The future of shopping may involve vertical-specific search engines that provide a more personalized and efficient shopping experience. Product discovery is a challenge in the e-commerce industry, and traditional keyword-based search engines are not effective in helping users find what they are looking for. - Building relationships with partners is crucial for Showroom's success, and the company curates a list of high-quality brands to ensure a positive user experience. When the US auto industry needed a restructuring or bailout in 2009, the Obama administration tapped former banker and investor Steven Rattner to lead the effort. As the government's "car czar," he helped shape an agreement that saw the United Auto Workers accept significant concessions in order to preserve the financial stability of the big three American carmakers. Now the UAW is on strike, with an aim of reversing many of those concessions and gaining new benefits for their workers. So what can the UAW reasonably accomplish? How plausible are their asks? And can US industry remain competitive with higher labor costs? On this episode of Odd Lots, we speak with Rattner to get his take on the negotiations, the challenge of the energy transition on the incumbent automakers, and the goals of Bidenomics more broadly, as the administration seeks to boost domestic manufacturing in areas like EVs, batteries, and semiconductors.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Plastic is everywhere. And it could be making you sick. As higher concentrations of microplastic particles are found throughout the world, in the air, soils and water, more and more research is suggesting that all this plastic could have negative health impacts, including on babies, children, and our ability to have children. This is particularly a danger for the Global South, which is suffering disproportionately from plastic pollution. In Plastic Diet, co-hosts Lisa Ann Pinkerton (former NPR reporter) and Christian Roselund (formerly of Rocky Mountain Institute, Pacifica) look at where plastic waste comes from, where it goes (hint: not some magical “away” place), what's in it, and what research tells us it is likely doing to our bodies. And we look at what we can do about it, including how we can design for a different world without plastic pollution.Plastic Diet features UN-recognized Land Hero, social entrepreneur, and journalist Patricia Kombo, scientist and researcher Kam Sripada, centre manager at the Centre for Digital Life Norway, and Beth Rattner, the executive director of the Biomimicry Institute.Subjects discussedSources of plastic pollutionImpact of plastic pollution on the Global SouthDocumented health risks from toxins in plasticsStatus of research on health effects of plastic pollutionChallenges in studying health impacts of microplastics and nanoplasticsThe false promise of recycling as a solution to plastic pollutionFashion's role in microplastic pollution Techniques for redesigning textiles to mimic nature Plastic-eating fungus, (yes, you heard us- a new magic mushroom)Alternatives to single-use plastics (a.k.a. Ever noticed how different you feel depending on your surroundings? On the surface, it might sound woo woo, but there are decades of scientific research that suggests our bodies respond to cues in our environment.   Studies have found that our mood, health, happiness, and behavior are all impacted by our physical environment. Beyond that, they've found that certain elements in our physical space could actually make us more creative.   Architect Donald M. Rattner helps individuals optimize creativity by applying scientific research into the psychology of space. He is the author of the bestselling book, My Creative Space: How to Design Your Home to Stimulate Ideas and Spark Innovation, 48 Science-based Techniques.   Today Donald joins us on the Chapter X show to share how to apply these findings to our own physical spaces—and make ourselves more creative.    We discussed:   The effect that your environment has on your mental and physical states How physical spaces affect our ability to think creatively and innovate Why the concept of design is much more accessible than you might realize Science-backed reasons why we should tune into our surroundings   How most of us are losing a connection to physical nature (and why it matters)   The impact of a messy vs. neat environment on how we generate new ideas   Connect with Donald My Creative Space: How to Design Your Home to Stimulate Ideas and Spark Innovation https://donaldrattner.com Donald on LinkedIn

Environmental literacy and social justice are inextricably linked, and recent changes in California's curricula fully encourage pedagogical exploration of this linkage. Three new academic content frameworks (in Science, History-Social Science, and Health) promote challenge-based learning, in which student inquiry leads to student action in local communities. Students are also discovering nature-inspired design, i.e. Biomimicry, as part of this process. In this session, a school district representative, a teacher, and a student, share their perspectives about this intersection of environmental literacy and social justice. The panel also leads hands-on immersion into the Biomimicry design process with a focus on ways to apply these methods in our own schools and communities. With: Beth Rattner, Biomimicry Institute; Juanita Chan, Rialto Unified School District; Kavita Gupta, Freemont Union High School District.
