I first encountered Bryn Souza several years ago as a member of a writers group called BlogPaws and through the Dog Writers Association of America. We met in person the first time at the DWAA annual awards ceremony in February 2020 and again this past spring at Global Pet Expo. To know Bryn is to see the sunshine in every day. She has a bright, engaging personality and she loves dogs. Oh my dog, how she loves dogs, especially her Boston terriers. A graduate of Quinnipiac University with a master's in business administration, Bryn is smart and articulate. She hosts a blog about her life with her dogs at ADogWalksIntoaBar.com and she's now the marketing director of Pet Hub, the first company to launch a QR code ID tag in an attempt to lower the United States' dismal return to owner rate for lost pets. Bryn's life took an awful turn in 2022. She lost her beloved Bean, her marriage, her cat Mimi, the home she loved … I wished I could have reached out to her and say, "Hey, I'm here if you need me," but I was in my own shitty year. Bryn is our guest this week, sharing her journey through these last 18 months. Through it all, she has remained positive … and open to signs sent to her from Yoda and Bean, who are both in the next realm now, wherever that may be. In this Part 2 episode with Billie Groom we offer hope for adolescent and adult dogs who struggle with habitual behavior challenges.Erica Salvemini, host of The Rising Lioness Podcast welcomes back Billie Groom, animal welfare activist, social entrepreneur and Canine Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CCBT) expert.During this show Billie and Erica take a deeper dive into the inherent issues within the monolithic and unregulated pet industry. They ask difficult questions like, why is canine behavioral euthanasia and surrender so prevalent today? And, Why are behaviorally challenged dogs being euthanized enmasse instead of institutions opting for more conscious solutions to long-term rehabilitation?Erica asks the audience to use its voice for our Canine BFF's to create a grassroots movement to shift the industry towards rehabilitating our behaviorally challenged, misunderstood dogs, in place of surrender and euthanasia. CCBT is the conscious and compassionate solution to helping canines who are otherwise being destroyed en masse. This thought provoking conversation also addresses a current and rising movement toward implementing laws against backyard breeding and puppy mills selling pets in stores. Erica and Billie share candid views on the breeding, and industry which prioritizes money over the happiness and freedom of the animal. These canine industry experts offer another perspective and solutions for frustrated pet parents who hope to help their beloved 4 legged, furry family members. As a Master Reiki practitioner and pet care entrepreneur, Erica has been helping pets and their people for 2 decades. Through use of Reiki, a healing modality that has been around for nearly 4 millennia, we can offer transformational healing for our struggling canines. This holistic approach is still going strong today because of its simple, gentle and effective way in which it treats the patient, which explains why it's lasted for centuries. With decades of evidence, CCBT has been scientifically vetted as a proven methodology to help dogs who might otherwise be surrendered or worse, euthanized due to “behavioral challenges”.CCBT and Reiki combined would be a transformational powerhouse of healing for pets and their people too.If you're feeling despair over how to help your beloved behaviorally challenged adolescent or adult dogs, there is HOPE! Log on to learn about these highly effective and holistic approaches to rehabilitation. You can also contact animal welfare organizations, veterinarians, politicians and industry leaders at the local, state and national level and ask them to administer Canine Cognitive Behavior Therapy as a rehabilitation solution in place of surrender and euthanasia. We can all use our voice to help make a difference in saving canine lives today!Billie Groom is an award winning author, podcast host, animal welfare activist, and social entrepreneur. Gayle King once introduced Carol Bryant as "a dog lover of the highest order." Carol, whom I met in 2020 just weeks before the whole world shut down with the COVID-19 pandemic, has been on King's Oprah Radio to talk about the love of dogs. Carol is so much into the dog business that she had her catchphrase "my heart beats dog" trademarked and tattooed on her left bicep. She is the immediate past president of the Dog Writers Association of America, a member of the American Spaniel Club, founder of the Club Cocker Facebook group, and founder of Wigglebutt Warriors, a fundraising group that has raised over $80,000 to date for homeless Cockers and other dogs. She's also the co-author of Pet Blogging for Love & Money and author of the DogMinder, a canine health and wellness journal. That's not all. Carol is a very very busy woman. In November last year, Carol's beloved boy, a Cocker Spaniel named Dexter, was diagnosed with and then very suddenly died from hermangiosarcoma. Hermangiosarcoma is a highly malignant cancer that commonly attacks a dog's spleen, liver, heart and skin. Hermangiosarcoma's cause, according to NC State Veterinary Hospital, is in most cases unknown. There are options for surgery and chemotherapy but the Flint Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University says despite treatment, the long-term prognosis for dogs with hermangiosarcoma is generally poor. Carol very publicly shared her pain on her Facebook profile. Every post, every word she wrote on Facebook tore my heart apart. I could feel her panic and agony as Dexter was diagnosed and dying of hermangiosarcoma. What she didn't realize at the time was how she helping other dog lovers recognize the signs of hermangiosarcoma and get their dogs to treatment. She was also able to bring comfort and learning to thousands by being very public about the trauma she experienced in losing her Dexter. Join me and Carol as we look back on those days and discuss why she felt she needed to be so public with her pain and how the stories she and others have told about her beloved Dexter have brought her comfort in the days following his death. Listen for: Why the Cocker Spaniel is Carol's special breed The sudden onset of the news that Dexter had hermangiosarcoma The lessons she learned from Dexter How Carol is learning to live with her grief, carrying her "grief suitcase" with her wherever she goes What not to say to a grieving dog owner Find Carol: Fidose of Reality Facebook Instagram YouTube Pinterest Twitter --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/onelastnetwork/message

A bite from a dog can have many ramifications. These can include the emotional impacts on the dog's guardians, or the dog practicing an undesirable behavior, or even the potential fate of the dog. And of course in our litigious society, we often will see civil and even criminal ramifications when a dog inures a person or other animal. For this episode of Fresh Bites on The Bitey End of the Dog, I chat with Melissa McMath Hatfiled who is an expert on expert witness work in dog bite cases. Melissa does an excellent job of breaking down what can happen when a bite incident ends up in court, and what to expect from both the plaintiff and defendant sides. For additional resources on helping dogs with aggression, visit:https://aggressivedog.comAbout Melissa:Melissa McMath Hatfield, MS, CBCC-KA, CDBC, has combined her experience as a trial consultant and her passion for the human-canine relationship to develop and strengthen the canine-human relationship through understanding, knowledge, and empathy. Hatfield earned a master's degree in counseling psychology (1981) and is a retired Licensed Psychological Examiner. As owner of McMath Trial Consultants for 42 years, her area of specialization has been in jury selection, developing jury profiles, focus groups, case presentation, voir dire, and witness preparation. She has been published and presented to numerous state and national bar associations and is considered an expert in jury selection for both state and federal courts. She has participated in high-profile cases in both civil and criminal courts across the country. Hatfield is a Certified Canine Behavior Consultant and a Professional Member of both the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT). Her articles have received numerous nominations in the Dog Writers Association of America's writing competition. Relative to this presentation, she was published in the IAABC Journal, August 2017, “Witness for the Prosecution” and the APDT, Chronicle, Spring, 2018, “Witness for the Prosecution…Dog trainers, behaviorist may be called for expert testimony.” She presented a 2015 E-Training Webinar, “Identifying and Assessing Mental Health Issues in the Dog,” and “Attachment Scales as a Tool for Trainers, Shelters and Behavior Consultants,” at the APDT 2017 fall conference in Richmond Virginia. Currently, Hatfield has a private practice in which her skills as a trial consultant and certified canine consultant can be combined to assist the professionals who find themselves in litigation. However, her primary focus is temperament assessments and behavior evaluations of dogs that are exhibiting mental health issues, such as anxiety, aggression, fear, and other behavior problems. Hatfield lives in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with her very supportive husband, Dick, and two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Haviland and Huntington, who is currently aspiring toward his AKC Championship. Dog Works Radio is hosted by Robert and Michele Forto and takes listeners into the scruffy, curious, and sometimes heroic world of dogs. Let's dive into the delightful and surprising look at our relationship with our K9 Buddies. Did you know puppy scammers post fake litters online or pretend to be someone they're not (usually an existing breeder) to take advantage of puppy sales (sans the puppies.) This means that if you aren't careful, you could find the perfect puppy, send the ‘breeder' your money, and never receive a puppy or any follow-up communication in return. Of course, Christmas is a big time for adding a new puppy to the family. While we do not recommend this, we will give you some tips and tricks to avoid a puppy scam online. Thanks to our friends from the American Kennel Club and the Dog Writers Association of America for helping us out on this episode.

First, thank you to the tens of thousands of listeners who tuned into season 1. We had a lot of fun, and with your support, we won the Dog Writers Association of America's best podcast of 2020. Something we are really proud of and wouldn't be possible without all of you!Based on feedback, the theme for season two is “the role of dogs as family members”. The lives that dogs live now are very different than how they existed through most of history. And while this comes with benefits for dogs, it also poses new unique challenges. To help you navigate the season, this first episode is about Instinct's Nature-Driven Nurture framework, which helps people parent their dogs in a very individualized way. We hope that by providing this framework, it's going to help you put all of the 12 episodes of season 2 into context; as information on dog behavior and training can sometimes seem very piecemeal. Our goal is to not only provide access to some of the top dog behavior people in the world but help you understand these topics and how it fits into the broader picture of your dog as a family member.- YouTube Link to watch the interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_oYnPouMAc - Free Nature-Driven Nurture Mini-Guide: Email us at onlinelearning@instinctdogtrianing.com and we'll email you a PDF version of the course materials for free. - Pre-Register for the Nature-Driven Nurture Course launching on Feb 28, 2022! Battling Depression with Running Shoes and a Dog: Nita Sweeney A major depressive episode turned Nita Sweeney from the law to writing. She is now an award-winning author who shares what she’s learned in her autobiographical Amazon best seller Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink. Running, and more specifically, running with her dog helped change Nina’s life and her mental health, and she talks with Coach Claire about how running can be an effective tool for managing mental health issues, the challenges and limitations of running, the importance of community, even a virtual one, for keeping your spirits and your training up, and for all you new pandemic puppy owners, she shares tips on how to run with your new friend. Nita has been plying her writing trade for over 25 years, and her work has been featured in health.com, healthline.com, livestrong.com, Fupping.com, PsychCentral.com, bpHope.com, Bustle.com, NextAvenue.com, UpJourney.com, Medium.com, Pawstruck.com, Thrive Global, WGRN, Sweatpants & Coffee, Authority Magazine, Intergenerational Inspiration, 2014 and Beyond, and Pretty Progressive, and in bp Magazine and Epoch Times, on the Word Carver, Running Dad, My Brain on Endorphins, and Diz Runs podcasts, and was nominated for the Ohio Arts Council Governor's Award. Her articles, essays, and poems have appeared in Buddhist America, Dog World, Dog Fancy, Writer's Journal, Country Living, Pitkin Review, Spring Street, The Taos News, WNBA-SF blog, Pencil Storm, The Writing Cooperative, It's Not Your Journey, Wide Open Writing, and other newspapers and newsletters. She writes the blog, Bum Glue and publishes the monthly email, Write Now Columbus. Her poem "Memorial" won the Dublin Arts Council's Poet's Choice Award and an early draft of her memoir, Depression Hates a Moving Target: How Running with My Dog Brought Me Back from the Brink, (previously titled Twenty-Six Point Freaking Two) was short-listed for the William Faulkner - William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition Award. The book was awarded a Maxwell Medal in the Human Animal Bond category of the Dog Writers Association of America writing competition. It is a #1 Amazon Bestseller in the "mood disorders," "bipolar disorder," and "running & jogging" categories. The book was selected by Ohioana Library to be included in the 2020 Ohioana Festival. Nita also coauthored the popular writing journal, You Should Be Writing: A Journal of Inspiration and Instruction to Keep Your Pen Moving, with Brenda Knight (Women of the Beat Generation.) Nita earned a journalism degree from The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, a law degree from The Ohio State University, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Goddard College. She serves on the board of the Women's National Book Association of San Francisco. For ten years, she studied with and assisted best-selling author Natalie Goldberg (Writing Down the Bones) at week-long writing workshops teaching the "rules of writing practice" and leading participants in sitting and walking meditation. Goldberg authorized Nita to teach "writing practice" and Nita has taught for nearly twenty years. When she's not writing and teaching, Nita runs. She has completed three full marathons, 27 half marathons (in eighteen states), and more than 80 shorter races. Nita lives in central Ohio with her husband and biggest fan, Ed, and her yellow Labrador running partner, Scarlet (aka #ninetyninepercentgooddog). Questions Nita is asked: 2:41 Let's start with your running journey. How did you begin to run regularly? 5:03 Your running journey is also connected to your mental health journey. Can you talk a little bit about that? 7:46 What was it like finding a running community? 10:14 How specifically has running helped your mental health? 11:49 I think it’s pretty well known that everybody who gets a running habit going, you feel good, at least when you stop running. Sometimes when you actually are running it doesn’t always feel good, but most of the time we feel good after we run, but there is a limit to that. You can only run so many miles in a day. You can’t always rely on exercise for all of your mental health issues. Where do you kind of draw the line and say, “Yes, running is a tool but I need some extra help?” 14:16 Sometimes you need actual therapy beyond running; don’t you agree? 15:41 I would also like to talk about you running with your dog, Scarlet. A lot of runners have dogs, and dogs help us get moving and get active, but you decided to write a book about that. Can you talk a little bit about that? 19:03 What other tips do you have for someone who just got their pandemic puppy and want to start running with the dog? 20:59 I know a lot of people who run with dogs who will maybe do their warmup with the dog and then circle back home and drop the dog off and then do a longer run. Is that something that you’ve had to do? In marathon training, you can’t take your dog for 20 miles or something like that. 23:21 I would imagine if you’re doing any kind of speed work or some kind of session where you need to do that, that must be a challenge with a dog? 24:21 Many runners have, like you, found running later in life. How has your running changed as you age? 16:13 With your running and the pandemic, all the races have been canceled for the most part, a lot of us are left without goals. Are you still running and training without that goal and deadline? 28:44 I’ve started to see these socially distant races come up, and it just makes me wonder, is everybody going to wear masks when they run, which is obviously hard, and how do you stay six feet apart, what if you want to pass somebody? Have you looked into any of that, like how they’re going to do that? 31:49 I would love to hear more about when you are depressed or going through a mental health episode, you know that running makes you feel better, you know that calling a friend makes you feel better, you know that intellectually, but because you’re depressed and not feeling good, you don’t feel like doing those things. So how do you start moving when you don’t want to move? How do you reach out when you don’t want to reach out? Any tips? 35:37 Let’s say I’m a brand new runner and I want to find community. Where would you suggest me going? Questions I ask everyone: 38:09 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you first started running, what advice would you give yourself? 38:55 What is the greatest gift that running has given you? 39:42 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Nita: “I had to find something that suited me in a way, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, and running did that.” “I really think that it’s kind of ironic that I ended up writing a book about running. I couldn’t have done that without the focus and endurance that I had from marathon training.” “Having gone through an injury, coming out the other side, realizing that it’s going to be okay, that’s been one of the great things of having done anything, but especially running for a long time, seeing those patterns.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? Hounds on the American Frontier with Custer Author Brian Duggan with his Saluki Author https://www.brianpatrickduggan.net (Brian Duggan)’s journey to the publication of General Custer, Libbie Custer and Their Dogs: A Passion for Hounds, from the Civil War to Little Bighorn was launched by Hickory the Scottish Deerhound’s Best in Show at Westminster Kennel Club. Editor Denise Flaim asked Duggan for an article about Custer’s Deerhounds for Sighthound Review as perspective on the breed’s history. As he wrote the magazine article, Duggan became aware of a vast trove of unwritten history on the topic of Custer’s passion for hounds. Duggan’s meticulously researched historical biography examines the lives of General George Armstrong Custer and his wife, Libbie Custer, as wholehearted dog lovers. At the time of Custer’s death at Little Bighorn, they owned a rollicking pack of forty hunting dogs, including Scottish Deerhounds, Russian Wolfhounds, Greyhounds and Foxhounds. Rich detail for dog lovers includes the Custers’ first dogs during the Civil George Armstrong Custer (seated) on the 1874 Black Hills Expedition with a deerhound and sleeping greyhound.
