Another throwback from the Truck Jewls archives, this was the 2nd Mix CD after making the transition from tapes. After having no luck trying to digitize my master and eventually buying a used copy off Discogs it turns out the blank CD’s during this batch were faulty and didn’t stand the test of time so if you have this one it probably won’t read in any CD player on the planet…trust me… I tried and couldn’t do it so I re-made the mix from scratch…dug through the crates to find all the records again...couldn’t leave anything missing from the digital mixtape set coming this year, so here’s a taste of some 2000 flavor mixed in 2020 featuring the finest in underground hip hop music from the likes of Camu Tao (RIP), Jedi Mind Tricks, J Dilla, Grand Agent, Kool G Rap, Grand Puba, Sean Price, Beatnuts, Common, Sadat X, Large Professor, El The Sensei, early Joel Ortiz (aka Jo Ell Quickman) & then some.01 – Camu Tao – You Hear Me Talking To You02 – Grand Agent Ft. The soundtrack has always been a big tool of mine as a DJ to find those non-album bangers that most people would overlook. I flooded my mixtapes with plenty of these songs over the years and decided to make a formal Hidden Treasures mix to celebrate the soundtracks to some classic films that did a great job meshing the music & movie as well as some others that were probably better off releasing the music alone. Only the most problematic music junkies will have or know of most of these tracks...people (like me) who spent 10$-15$ on a soundtrack because it had 1 or 2 songs that weren’t anywhere else. Plenty of soundtrack gems to go around, expect more volumes, this s a 2-part episode to start so enjoy the first volume…part 2 dropping next.01 – Chuck D Intro Message (CB4)02 – Public Enemy – Living in a Zoo (CB4)03 – Naughty By Nature – Poor Man’s Poetry (Poetic Justice)04 – Nice & Smooth – Cash in my Hands (Poetic Justice)05 – Grand Puba – Fat Rat (Strictly Business)06 – DBC – Hit The Boomz (Sugar Hill)07 – PM Dawn – The Nocturnal is in the House (CB4)08 – Leaders of the New School – Shining Star (Strictly Business)09 – Lord Finesse – Set it Off Troop (Class Act)10 – Pharcyde – Pandemonium (Street Fighter)11 – Funkdoobiest – The Good Hit (Mi Vida Loca)12 – 2pac – Troublesome (How to be a Player)13 – Third Eye – Ease Up (Who’s the Man)14 – Outkast – Everlasting (Nothing to Lose)15 – Public Enemy – Gotta Do What I Gotta Do (Trespass)16 - Mobb Deep - Get Ya Hustle On (Across 155th St.)17 – Souls of Mischief – Get the Girl, Grab the Money & Run (A Low Down Dirty Shame)18 – The Roots – Act Too (The Love of My Life) (Brown Sugar)19 – Mos Def – Brown Sugar (Fine) (Brown Sugar)20 – Slick Rick – Need Some Bad (The Sitter)21 – Mic Geronimo – Unstoppable (The Fan)22 – Lost Boyz – Ordinary Guy (Caught Up)23 – 2pac – High Til I Die (Sunset Park)24 – Lord Finesse – You Know What I’m About (Trespass)25 – Tribe Called Quest – Glamour and Glitz (The Show)26 – Tha Alkaholiks – Coast II Coast (Friday)27 – Mobb Deep – Rare Species (Soul in the Hole)28 – Nas – One on One (Street Fighter)

Episode 28 - I remember 1st hearing the name Dumbtron on a Mr. Lif song and just saying ‘wow…what a great name’….With roots in North Florida & Atlanta this duo features super producers, MC’s & DJ’s Paten Locke aka DJ Therapy (RIP) & Willie Evans Jr. who got started in the group Asamov along with Ja-One-Da & Basic, then eventually came together as a duo called Dumbtron. Some people are reading this saying “Who?”, while others are reading this saying “Hell Yes!!”…The 2000’s were different times for hip hop it’s not considered an “era” or anything close to the decade that preceded it but these guys held it down for the golden era… so many classic hip hop references in this mix from the re-flipped samples and choice cuts for hooks along with the subtle references to classic material applied in the most discrete ways…I also did some acapella blend remixes from a few OG’s in the middle for good measure.I had a chance to meet Paten Locke once, great guy, super humble, I told him I always wanted to hear an official Dumbtron album but it hasn’t happened yet maybe sometime in the future but I wanted to put together a mix with some of their solo and collective stuff featuring contributions from Diamond D, Dillon, Batsauce, Dres (Black Sheep), George Clinton, AZ, Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, Vinnie Paz, Supa Dave West, 9th Wonder, Count Bass D and other related joints off the Full Plate record label…special thanks to Willie Evans Jr & Dillon Vaughan Maurer for the drops and blessings….Make sure to search for these guys on bandcamp or any digital streaming service you use, there’s much more that what I put together here…One of the most criminally slept on crews in my opinion, they don’t get the credit they deserve..enjoy!01 - Dumbtron - Moose Python02 - Dumbtron - Stay Classy (Live Version)03 - Willie Evans Jr ft. Back on it with a gem from the mixtape archives…The year was 1998… this is technically my 3rd mixtape (that I had out for sale) and since I’ve been digitizing all my old mixtapes for a special usb package coming soon, I wanted to give a taste of what’s to come. The distribution on this tape was extremely limited, only a few choice record stores in Philly carried this one before I expanded to Sandbox, Landspeed, etc…If you have a physical copy of this in your collection, there is a special place in my heart for you! Biggup Fat Beats, Sound of Norristown, Armand’s Record’s and Bobbito’s Footwork in Philly circa 1998 who were the first stores to carry these things…I was also working for Ruff House Records at the time when Kool Keith was recording the “Black Elvis” album and was fortunate to get him, Marc Live (Raw Breed) & Black Silver to lace me with an exclusive promo…ALL ARMOR:May 199801 – All Armor Intro02 – Kool Keith ft Black Silver & Marc Live – Truck Jewls Promo03 – Gang Starr ft Lady of Rage & Kurupt – You Know My Steez (Remix)04 – Show & AG ft Ghetto Dwellas – Q&A05 – Black Marvel ft Sadat X – Right Place for Action06 – Fat Joe ft Noreaga – Misery Loves Company07 – Maestro Manny – How I Feel08 – Lootpack – Lost Art09 – Defari – Never Lose Touch10 – Sunz of Man ft. After a nice healthy creative break I’m back on it for 2020 with a little something different this time…no vocals on this one, strictly beats, dubs, instrumentals both classic & obscure and in some cases a little bit of both… enjoy the vibes on this, something for MC’s,DJ’s, producers, graf writers & anyone who flat out appreciates hip-hop beats…I’m not posting a tracklist for this one, you’ll just have to trust me but I’ve got a lot of funky pieces from the likes of Madlib, Oh No, Damu The Fudgemunk, Downtown Science, Gramatik, No Face, Run DMC, Michael Jackson, Dirty Diggs, The Legion, JVC Force, John Robinson, Company Flow, Skunkz, Buckwild, Screen Jazzmaster & more…for anyone wondering why this is #25 and there is no 24, I had a different mix prepped a few weeks ago and was planning to drop it the Sunday the whole Kobe tragedy happened and the irony of that just messed me up so I scrapped that mix and out of respect there will be no episode 24…it’s only right..enjoy

For the 10th episode I wanted to do something special and different so I dug up a live set from when I was out in Indianapolis a little over a year ago thuggin’ it out with long-time friend and all around OG Ron Miner aka DJ Indiana Jones and got invited to spin at one of Indy’s longest running and most respected Hip-Hop nights, “Take That Tuesdays”, hosted by two of Naptown’s finest people, J.Moore and DJ Metrognome. That party has been rockin’ downtown Indianapolis for over 12 years and still going strong. It was truly an honor to be a part of it and the way Ron recorded it you can hear all the people’s reactions in the background and the set was perfectly narrated by host with the most J.Moore. This thing has been sitting on my hard drive for a while now, time to let it go…flubbed blends, mistakes and all...it was a live set, working with a completely new mixer, the Pioneer DJM-S9 which had just came out and is sexy af…it took a little time but I started having fun with the features and put the crowd in an old school NY state of mind for a while. By now you should know I don’t post my tracklists but this one features some classic material from the likes of EPMD, Cypress Hill, Super Lover Cee & Cassanova Rud, Phaze & Rhythm, Jaz, Jay-Z, Alkaholiks, LL Cool J, Black Sheep, MC Lyte, BDP, Naughty By Nature, Original Flavor, Gang Starr, Schooly D, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Mary J Blige, Biggie, Run DMC, Eric B & Rakim, Biz Markie, Showbiz & AG, Diamond…I want to thank everyone who has been supporting this little experiment of mine, I plan to keep this thing going with plenty of new ideas lined up for the next 10 eps…enjoy!

Episode 9-A Crew Love: Digital Underground…a deep delve into the crates of one of the funkiest most original hip hop crews in history founded in 1987 in Oakland, CA. Lead by the artistic vision of producer extraordinaire Shock G DU at its core was Money B, Chopmaster J & Kenny K but the collective continued to grow in time eventually branched out with numerous contributions from DJ’s, musicians and artists like Clee, Saafir, Mystic and of course Tupac who got his start as a roadie for DU in the late 80’s eventually spawning a deep rooted relationship with Shock & Money B which never wavered no matter how far his career took him. Not many groups can be abstract, political, funky, for the ladies and all around fun at the same time but DU did just that with every release and Shock’s signature production style of blending old school hip hop, p-funk samples combined with his own musical skill particularly on the keyboards was one of the main things that made them so unique during their run. Peep the mix featuring tracks from DU, Raw Fusion, Tupac as well as Shock produced tracks for Prince, Monie Love, a verse from Big Pun & an intro featuring George Clinton for good measure..Crew Love is going to be a series of tribute style mixes, look out for more in the future. I’ll drop Part 2 next week for now relax your mind & let your conscience be free…

Hip-House got started in Chicago during the uprising of house music in the late 80’s/early 90’s. It caught on heavy and soon became something that most artists had to cater to either through record label pressure or on their own merit, but at one point most relevant MC’s from that time had at least 1 Hip-House track on their album or a remix on a single. After a while it got tired and fizzled out due to super commercialism of the style and the emergence of more gritty/slower tempo hip hop being more sought after in the mid 90’s but for whatever it’s worth Hip-House had a good run and remains a guilty pleasure of the Hip-Hop timeline when it was more about having a good time than having the best bars, with that said peep the lineup though, you might be surprised how many legendary MC’s catered to the Hip-House movement:Featuring tracks by: The D.O.C., Black Sheep, Tribe Called Quest, Stetsasonic, MC Lyte, EPMD, Eric B & Rakim, Rob Base, Twin Hype, Style, Doug Lazy, Two Without Hats, Too Nice, Wrecks-N-Effect, Special Ed, Big Daddy Kane, Precious, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Chilly T & Lord KCB.

So… I had a totally different show in the works for this week until the untimely news that the Queen of Soul as we know it passed away last week so I got inspired by the Aretha Franklin poster in my studio to do some research and find all the songs that sampled her in some way shape or form. I found out that some of the grimiest, best and classic songs of my lifetime used her music as well as some new discoveries that I was unaware of. This mix is a celebration of Aretha’s music & her profound impact on Hip-Hop since the very beginning stages as well as a tribute to some great producers in the game like DJ Premier, Kanye West, Havoc, Prince Paul, Erick Sermon, Ayatollah, DJ Muggs & Q-Tip to name a few. Whether it was a bassline, piano chop, a simple sound from one of her incredible musicians or a vocal clip sped up or otherwise chopped and flipped…every song on this mix has a piece of Aretha in it. I don’t post tracklists, but it’s 90 minutes of great Hip-Hop from the likes of Dr. Dre, Public Enemy, Cam’Ron, Jay-Z, L The Headtoucha, Heavy D, Bee Why, Dysfunkshunal Famly, Bundy, Kanye West, Slum Village, EPMD, Cypress Hill, Wu-Tang Clan, Czarface, Roc Marciano, Sir Michael Rocks, Blackstar, 3rd Bass, Mobb Deep, Capone N Noreaga,Tragedy Khadafi, Sean Price, Muneshine, Termanology, KRS-One, Poor Righteous Teachers, Styles P, Pharoahe Monch, Bizzie Boyz, Nas, De La Soul, Dead Prez & Onyx…not necessarily in this order, but do the math if you want and/or just enjoy…
