New episode! We continue covering the Likwit family this week. I'm joined by Raven Hunter & Ben Neumann to talk about a group that first showed up on King Tee's "Tha Triflin Album" and ended up blazing, or drinking, their own trail. Mixing fun, but lyrical, flows behind head nodding beats, the trio of Tash, J-Ro & E-Swift gave us 5 straight high quality records, and we talk about all of them. King Tee's legacy is an underrated one. A West Coast darling, respected by his peers that put on a fair share of artists; you'd think his music would be more known? Especially when it's great for the most part! In this episode of People's Party, Talib Kweli sits down with Tash from Tha Alkaholiks to discuss working with Pharrell, Bow Wow performing Tash's rhymes, King Tee, and much more.
B. Cox reviews West Coast hip-hop trio Tha Alkaholiks debut album 21 & Over, as it turns 30. The trio, made up of emcees Tash, E-Swift and J-Ro, formed in the late 1980s and were mentored by legend King Tee. After signing to Loud/RCA, the group started recording their debut album. The album would be a compact, but power-packed 35 minute effort that introduced this eclectic, but a serious group of emcess to the hip-hop game. The group's style, which was based around a fun-loving times filled with drinks, weed smoking and partying, was not of the slapstick or parody type of music that many thought it would be. Going more of the route of some of the West Coast contemporaries like Cypress Hill, Pharcyde and Souls of Mischief, the 'Liks' sound featured hard hitting and funky sample based beats with capable emceeing while maintaining a feel good vibe. The album featured the likes of Field Trip, Threat, the duo Lootpack (a young MadLib and Wildchild) from Stones Throw Records, and King Tee himself. The group and King Tee produced the majority of the album with E-Swift taking charge of much of the production credits. While none of the albums three singles charted on the Hot 100, they did catch on on the Hot Rap and R&B Charts and the group would gained a cult following in the coming years among West Coast fans and eventually worldwide due to their fun-loving demeanor while displaying a high level of emceeing and beats that could get the parties rocking or heads nodding.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Tha Alkaholiks Debut Album '21 & Over' Turns 25 | Anniversary Retrospectivehttps://albumism.com/features/tha-alkaholiks-debut-album-21-and-over-turns-25-anniversary-retrospectiveTime Is Illmatic: Tha Alkaholiks: 21& Overhttps://timeisillmatic.me/2017/06/02/tha-alkaholiks-21-over-august-24-1993/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Personally, DJ Pooh was one of my biggest inspirations as a producer in the 1980s. Additionally, his career clearly showcases that he is one of the most intriguing, creative, and diverse producers of his time. His work as a producer (and in some cases as a DJ) with King Tee, Deadly Threat, Nefertiti, Ice Cube, LL Cool J, Del The Funkee Homosapien, Ultramagnetic MCs, Dogg Pound, Snoop, Too Short, Breeze of L.A. Posse, Run-DMC, Yo-Yo, Mixmaster Spade, 2Pac, and more, illustrates a resume that easily cements that point. And, his history as a producer is only a part of what he has accomplished in his amazing career. Also, super shout out to King Tee, who I am a big fan of, and it was his music that initially led to me hearing DJ Pooh.
In episode 32 I talk to Tash (Tha Alkaholiks) about King Tee, an American West Coast Hip hop rapper from Compton, California. Emerging as one of Compton's earliest hip hop artists, he was signed to Capitol records, where he released his debut album Act a Fool in 1988 with the hit singles "Act a Fool," "Payback's A Mutha," "The Coolest," and "Bass” [Remix], all of which were considered hip-hop classics. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he worked primarily with producer DJ Pooh, and was responsible for the rise of Tha Alkaholiks, whom he helped guide into the rap game. King T is also the CEO of his own record label, King T Inc.

There are no mistakes, only happy little accidents, so says paintguru and human Zen factory Bob Ross. Well, mistakes happen. Like when host Ruud forgot to check with podguest Tony about which The Texas Chainsaw Massacre he was talking, when he said he'd like to do an episode about that. Apparently he meant the 2003 remake, when muggins thought he was talking about the 1974 classic. There's another saying: assumption is the mother of all f*ck-ups. But social distancing is starting to become a thing and during the recording Ruud decides to roll with it. And thanks to the great conversations of Mr. Tee the episode is saved! Toeknee Tee is an American studying and residing in the Netherlands, who makes great hiphop songs and puts them out on his Spotify channel. The latest of his monthly EP's, Op de buurt II, is out now! Go have a listen! But first listen to this episode, which turned out lovely. Other topics in this episode are the inspirations from serial killer Ed Gein in Hollywood, horror hitting too close to home and a swapping of tales concerning hitchhiking. And o yeah! Tony brought his dog, Diamond, who is the cutest. This week's episode of Day 1 Radio serves up a little bit of nostalgia as we reconnect with one of the guests on our first ever show back in late 2013, Problem. A lot has changed over the last seven years in his career and he talks about those changes with us. He also talks about his new film short "A Compton Story" and the new music that could be coming any day now. Hope this episode helps your quarantine feel less problematic (pun intended). 3:30 - Problem recently dropped a new short "A Compton Story" on TIDAL. He explains why he felt this was the perfect time to drop, especially being an independent artist in a time where many artists signed to major deals are held up from dropping music. 5:30 - Problem jumped headfirst into film production for this project and learned on the go with some help from a few legendary friends. He talks about the pleasant surprise of being surrounded by talented people and putting out a high-quality product. 11:00 - Problem talks about working with producer Terrace Martin on his new music and recalls a funny story where SCRATCH Magazine got them confused and made a big mistake. He also talks about the process of putting his new album together and picking what songs were featured in the short film. 14:30 - Problem gets into the change of direction in his music. He made a living making ratchet and party music and was actually hesitant to show the full range of his music. He also reveals that it was hard to win over his own friends initially, but the truth in his music couldn't be denied. 19:15 - Problem talks about what has gone into him remaining independent instead of signing to a major record label. He also talks about how writing for other artists is what kept him motivated through the years where he wasn't able to drop all of the different kinds of music he was capable of making. 23:30 - Problem linked up with DJ Quik to drop Rosecrans a few years ago. Here he gets into how that changed how he approached producing music to this day. He also reveals that Quik told him that was some of the best music he produced in 15 years. He also talks about his dream to create an album with all of the Compton rappers including Kendrick Lamar, The Game, Buddy, Boogie, Dr. Dre, King Tee and Roddy Rich. 26:30 - Problem never talked about gang affiliations in his music, and for good reason. He says that it wasn't his truth and that gang banging is nothing to play with. 29:45 - Problem talks about his involvement with Destination Crenshaw and shares the funny story about how he got thrust into the spotlight. 32:30 - Problem talks about the big reveal he made on "A Compton Story." Episode 43 celebrates some of our favorite things in life. So, it only made sense to title this episode Beats, Baseball and Brews. And who better to have a chat with about these things than the homie Murs? Besides being a dope rapper, he's a dedicated father, hip-hop historian, an avid wrestling fan, amazing story-teller, and now, proud owner of a new cherry & waffles stout beer. We caught up with Murs while he was dealing with an unpleasant stomach bug, but being the professional that he is, Murs stuck it out for over 90 minutes on the phone. His stories are fascinating. Whether he is talking about DJ Quik cooking chicken soup for him, Brother Ali being scared of shellfish or El-P throwing down in a Denny's parking lot, this interview is packed with gems. We also discuss everything from Living Legends, Def Jux, Strange Music, Warner Brothers, Paid Dues, 9th Wonder, Will Smith and the possibility of Felt 4 with Sluggo. Murs is a down-to-earth, self-deprecating, fun-loving guy, who is the same both on and off record. He is relatable, likable and extremely personable. In addition to the Murs interview music, we got new joints by Erick Sermon, Jack Jones, Meyhem Lauren, Vinnie Paz & Tragedy Khadafi, Ill Bill & Stu Bangas, plus music from J-Live, Main Source, Ultramagnetic MC's, The Beatnuts, King Tee, Ras Kass, Ice Cube and Phonte. Be on the look-out for his upcoming album with 9th Wonder titled The Illiad Is Dead And The Odyssey Is Over. Murs is currently on the road touring, so check for him if he is coming your way too. Thanks to Murs and to all of you who continue to listen, support and rock with Take It Personal!

This is my 14th podcast with special guest host Kwest Tha Madd Lad, a tribute to his cult classic LP “This is My First Album” released via American Recordings (Rick Rubin & Dan Charnas) in 1996. Aside from being a battle tested MC and one of the most original and unique personalities the golden era has ever produced, Kwest is just a good dude and humble hip-hop fan/scholar. We did this on a Friday night just vibin’ with some brews and trying to do something different. I’m not a big talker but I do want to start incorporating guests on my shows but not in a typical interview kind of way, so maybe we’re onto something with this one, at the end of the day we had fun so check the show featuring some classic material from Kwest himself along with true school treasures from Akbar, Wizdom Life, Grand Agent, YG’z, Ill Advised, Micranots, King Tee, Rok One, Shabaam Sahdeeq, L-Fudge, Milkbone, Walking Large, The Roots, Rah Godess, Ultramagnetic MC’s, Call O’ Da Wild, Da N’Credible Nigga Naquan, Truth Enola & Shadowz in the Dark. When you’re done make sure to go search for Kwest’s newest project S.P.I.T.R. (Smartest Person In The Room) out now via Mindbenda Recordings on Bandcamp and all streaming services.
What's good HipHop Heads! Here with our second ever Old School Review, this time on Dr. Dre's "2001" album. This would be the last video Nick was in for 2014. We had a lot of fun making this video happen. "2001" is the 2nd solo studio album by Dr. Dre. It was released on November 16, 1999 by Aftermath Entertainment. The album is 22 tracks long & contains features from everybody and their mama (JK), features like Xzibit, Tray Dee, Eminem, Knock-turn'al, Devin the Dude, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Kurupt, King Tee, Ms. Roq, Hittman, MC Run, Kokane & Mary J. Blige amongst many others. This is what we have to say about it... In this episode we talk to west coast rap god, the pioneer of the drunken master style: mighty King Tee. He started in the eighties but captured the 90's with his opus known simply as Tha Triflin' Album which spoke of street life and partying but decidedly was NOT gangster rap even though he produced records for and shared studios with the likes of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and DJ Quik. Tee went on to co-found the group known as the Alkaholiks with Tash and J-ro and with a new radio venture and book in the works, we got a chance to catch up with the Ledge! We onsomehiphopshit. My guest this week is Chad Dawson, aka 83 Cutlass. He made his debut with a self-titled EP in 2012. We met recently when him and I played the parts of Inspectah Deck and Cappadonna, (respectively) at a Wu-Tang tribute show. He talks about being equally inspired by the older R&B he heard at his grandmother’s card parties, and the hip-hop his younger uncles were digging. He talks about his days as a graffiti writer, and how graffiti inspired his approach to music. We talk about his debut EP, and the full-length album he’s working on now. Mike Riley’s art this week is an homage to King Tee’s Payback’s A Mutha. This episode is hosted by Splicetoday.com.

This week THE ZRO HOUR salutes one of the illest groups in hip hop- THA ALKAHOLIKS. Tha Alkaholiks repped with party music full of crazy flows and banging production. After making an appearance on KING TEE's "Tha Triflin' Album", Tha Liks (J-Ro, Tash and E-Swift) released their first album "21 & Over" in 1993. As one of the first groups to sign with Loud Records, they were among the most influential groups to come out of that era as well as label mates with some of the finest in hip hop music including Big Pun, Wu-Tang and Mobb Deep. Their catalog consists of 5 albums with a couple of solo projects by Tash and J-Ro respectively. Tha Alkaholiks' emcee Tash calls in to talk about the formation of the Likwit Crew, studio sessions with Ol' Dirty Bastard and current tours. Tash also introduces me to rapper Black Silver and they speak on a new supergroup featuring Prince Po from Organized Konfusion! Enjoy the show! PLAYLIST DAAAM!
