Welcome to Twenty Dollars a Day, the podcast where we explore our favorite holodeck adventures in the Star Trek universe! Nathan and Eppy are bidding a fond farewell to this podcast with our final episode: the second Next Generation movie, First Contact. Look, it has a Dixon Hill holodeck appearance, so it counts enough for us to talk about it - and it's a great movie! Thanks for trekking through all the holodecks, holosuites and photonic landscapes over the years. End program. Happy April, everyone! This is our seventh and final look at the slice of the Star Trek universe that intersects with our first love, The Rockford Files. Hope you enjoy it! We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Look out, the Holodeck's malfunctioning and we're all trapped inside! And the safety protocols have been disabled! And the holograms are self aware! Today we're looking at the Holodeck in three different shows and all the horrors it can cause. First up is The Big Sleep, which introduces Picard as the private dick, Dixon Hill and his entourage can't stop touching things. We also both attempt to re-create Picard's epic speech from the end of the episode. Then we've got Kobayashi, where Dal tries to get through a Holodeck Kobayashi Maru with some of the best people in Starfleet (and Odo who's not technically part of Starfleet). Finally, Bashir and a very sassy Garak play at spies in Our Man Bashir, facing death traps and their comrades who think they're characters in a campy spy film! We also get into some musical acts who gave us psychic damage, a nemesis of the pod and use this as an excuse to talk about a rare musical track that's featured in an episode. 00:09:54 TNG: The Big Sleep 00:40:29 Prodigy: Kobayashi 01:03:12 DS9: Our Man Bashir Talking points include: Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, Arnold Judas Rimmer, Dune (1984), Dune (the SyFy movie), Sting's movie career, Lil Gator, the Pokemon Fuecoco, Dead Ringers, The Maltese Falcon, Miles' patronising clapping, Charlie's egg-shaped head, the facial hair of all the different Poirots, D&D novels, Macross, Reboot, Ba Weep Granna Weep Ninny Bong, LA Confidential, Blob Detective, Red Harvest, Brad Dourif, Thunderstruck, Rock Band, Maximum Overdrive, Star Wars: Rebels, Pandemic, Will Self & Gareth Gates' musical career, Explaining The Wombles & Britpop to Americans, James Bond movies, The Man from UNCLE, Alien, LeCarre, GoldenEye. Nicholas Ray directs Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Graham. Bogie is Dix Steele, who should not be confused for Captain Picard’s hollowdeck alter ego, Dixon Hill. (Am I the only one who does that?) Bogie is not a detective, but a screenwriter suspected of murder. In A Lonely Place is considered one of the best film noir made, and Bogart and Graham give excellent performances. Shelly Brisbin with Judy Samelson, Randy Dotinga, Micheline Maynard and Nathan Alderman.

While ferrying the fish-like Antedeans to a diplomatic conference, the Enterprise is intercepted by a shuttle transporting Lwaxana Troi! Also, Dixon Hill comes back this episode! Ruthie and Matthew talk about consent in dating culture, trigonometry, and how they actually enjoy Data's anecdotes.

If it wasn't for that dang moss, those Paxans would have gotten away with it! So Picard asks for the chance to do it once more, with feeling. Special Guest Shareef Jackson returns to talk about this unique Star Trek episode, and as a new father, he's also never sure if he was unconscious for 30 seconds or much longer. Whoopi Goldberg is woefully misused in the Dixon Hill re-visit, but we're glad the secretary stays consistent. Data is sus, but he gets a sweet voiceover. This week on Random Trek, Captain Ingle and I set course for what might arguably be the worst season of Star Trek ever: The Next Generation, season 1. However, there are the occasional bright spots in an otherwise lackluster season. In the episode The Big Goodbye, we're introduced to the possibilities of the holodeck. One of Captain Picard's pastimes is reading about the fictional 1940's detective Dixon Hill, and in this episode that pastime comes to life on the holodeck. As you can well imagine, things go horribly wrong. Join us as we go boldly! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pageturnerstheywerenot/message
COUNSELOR TROI'S MOM has a problem: she wants to sleep with Captain Picard, only, he's nowhere to be found. So in the meantime, she takes to interviewing all the males on board the Enterprise to see he would be a worthy mate. And just where is Picard? He's hiding in the holodeck playing a Dixon Hill adventure. How do Bryan and this week's guests, Tamar and Nathan, feel about this season two adventure? You'll just have to listen to find out. This one was an in-person record, so the sound quality might be a bit different from our previous episodes. And don't worry, Kristen just has the week off, but will be back next week for an all new one. This is our second Wild Card episode, where the guest chooses the episode. You'll find out all about why a Lwaxana Troi episode made it on the list. Starting next week, we'll be kicking off 2023 with episodes featuring Data, Lore, Moriarty, and more in preparation for the premiere of Star Trek: Picard - Season Three! Don't forget to check out our social media (@trekmarrykpod on Twitter & Instagram) and website: trekmarrykillpod.com -- Our Star Trek: Voyager - "Caretaker" poll runs through January 31st. Anika and Liz swap bodies and invade some holonovels as we discuss the Star Trek: Prodigy episodes "Ghost in the Machine" and "Mindwalk". And along the way, we touch on... Into the holo-verse Where is the Zero-as-Dixon-Hill story we need and deserve? Jankom Pog is NOT OKAY and we're into that Seriously, just a few weeks ago, we were like, "Jankom is the flattest character?" HOW WRONG WE WERE Murf. Just. Murf. What? It is OUTRAGEOUS that Paramount hasn't released Delta Heart: Magical Veterinarian as a phone game We do not dislike Dal's pirate game, but it doesn't really tell us anything new about him Liz is here to ship Control/The Living Construct. And also Zora/The Living Construct. Enemies to lovers but make it AI. Any time you can put Kate Mulgrew in a scene with herself, you get something good

Star Trek: The Next Generation analysis of season 1 episode 11 (The Big Goodbye) Oh boy, it's a holodeck episode and we are NOT happy about it! We're stuck with a Dixon Hill theme and 1940s San Francisco, questions about how tf the holodeck works and whether or not the crew is creating and destroying sentient life every time they use it, and poor Bev thinking she's finally getting her some alone time with the Captain only to have their private party crashed by aloof others time and again. Though we do not like the setting, we begrudgingly admit that this episode was actually pretty damn good. The writing was tight, the dialogue was funny and snappy, the actors were all at their best and reacting off each other to perfection. We get some great character development as well, even in smaller roles like Deanna coaching Picard on how to properly deliver the Jaraden greeting. Fun was had by all, even by us! Az Enterprise antedei követeket fogad a fedélzeten, akiket Picard hajója a Pacifica bolygóra szállít, hogy egy konferencián tárgyalások kezdődhessenek a föderációs csatlakozásukról. Az Enterprise útját hamarosan Lwaxana Troi is keresztezi, aki nyíltan kiveti a hálóját a kapitányra, amikor azonban Picard egy Dixon Hill holotörténetbe menekül, Troi a megfelelő házastárs felkutatása érdekében a fedélzeten lévő férfiakra kezd vadászni. What is the difference between squash and golf? Dixon Hill, a top U.S. junior in both sports, takes a stab at that age-old question.
"Clues" with special guest Katie Halliday! (TNG S4 E14) As in "Emmy Award-winning" Katie Halliday Katie Halliday (Emmy award-winning sound designer for Star Trek: Discovery and the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) joins the holobois with excellent insight into sound design in the 60s, 90s and today through the lens of this excellent bottle episode where Data is a prime suspect in a Space Mystery. Plus, we get to see Picard and Guinan play a level of the Dixon Hill program on... THE HOLODECK! Special visitors arrive on the Enterprise! We get two hibernating fish delegates, Mr. Homm, and his boss, a very sexed-up Betazoidian ambassador — Dame Majel Barrett. That's right, Diana Troi's mom: Lwaxana Troi is back, and boy is she horny! Lwaxana sets her eyes on Picard as a mate forcing Jean Luc to space-skedaddle into the Holodeck. On Holodeck, Picard gets to play Dixon Hill again as Lwaxana hunts for her next man: Number One! All this and fish assassins played by a member of Fleetwood Mac. What a nutty Galaxy Class spaceship, I mean, seriously.
In this week's Beam Me to Sick Bay, we discuss S1E11 Haven, where Lwaxana Troi and the Miller family come aboard the enterprise for Deanna Troi's arranged marriage, as well as S1E12 The Big Goodbye, where Picard lives out his holodeck fantasies in the world of fictional noir detective Dixon Hill. Get ready for our best 40s gangster accents!
It's time for episode 3 of Datalore: A Star Trek the Next Generation Podcast where two siblings get to know each other better. Today's episode discusses Episode 12 of TNG called “The Big Goodbye.” It's an awesome holodeck episode where Picard falls into the world of the fictional private eye Dixon Hill, which inspires Johno and Rachel to talk about times where they felt like they didn't quite fit in. Hope you like it! Cover art by: Lisa Ann Gaydos Theme Song: Written and Performed by Johno Bryant

The Return of Lwaxana Troi, Dixon Hill, and special guest Cicero Holmes in the same episode?! Uh-mazing! The Enterprise is prepared for some fishy dignitaries, yet not prepared for the storm of a Betazed woman going through her "Phase." Lwaxana has chosen her mate, but the Captain dodges that bullet by dodging bullets in the holodeck as his favorite hard-boiled detective. It all gets resolved, including the reveal that Mick Fleetwood is a stone cold assassin. Don't worry, it all makes sense in the end. Kind of. Greg hosts this episode and covers for Erik as he works Off-Broadway, Kate admires the silverware, Jimmie doesn't care for Lwaxana's abuse, and Cicero pours one out for Geordi, who doesn't appear in this episode, sadly. Picard kapitány egy bonyolult diplomáciai feladatra készül, melynek során a könnyen megsértődő rovarfaj, a Jarada üdvözlését kell végrehajtania a saját nyelvükön. Amikor Picard és néhány kollégája kikapcsolódásképpen a holofedélzetre látogatnak, egy üzemzavar miatt a Dixon Hill detektívtörténetben ragadnak, a stratégialag fontos kapcsolatfelvételt viszont csakis a hajó kapitánya tudná végrehajtani, a szimuláció a biztonsági protokollok meghibásodása miatt ráadásul életveszélyessé válik. Harvey Jason, Felix Leech from "The Big Goodbye" on Star Trek TNG One of the best episodes from the first season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was "The Big Goodbye." This was the series first intensive look into the holodecks, and it gave us an unforgettable film noir story that featured today's guest, Harvey Jason. Mr. Jason played Felix Leech; a Peter Lorre-inspired character who, along with Lawrence Tierney, terrorize Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, and Gates McFadden in the first TNG episode to feature Dixon Hill. Harvey tells us all about working on this episode, working with the stars, and his impressions of the set and actors. We also discuss another Gene Roddenberry project that Harvey worked on, "Genesis II," in which he acted alongside Majel Barrett and Ted Cassidy. This week's Community Questions are: CQ: With all the new Star Trek updates, what was the biggest surprise for you? Was there anything you were hoping they were going to announce? CQ: Would a T6 Oberth be the greatest starship in the game, or the GREATEST starship in the game? What would be a fitting trait for such a fine ship? Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! TREK IT OUT Star Trek: Discovery Reveals First Look at Season Four! By Rosko McQueen “We're all living in uncertainty”. They are the first words from Discovery's Captain Michael Burnham in the teaser trailer for season four. And as is often the case with the series, it looks at the world now and works to provide a reflection back to us through a sci-fi mirror. The first noticeable difference is the uniforms have a new splash of colour. The grey Starfleet uniforms of the 32nd century have been upgraded. We now have tops of command red, science blue and engineering gold along with medical white, offset with a black vertical stripe. So now there is no mistaking which department is which. Image: StarTrek.com In the trailer we hear about, potentially, this season's universe-threatening problem: a gravitational anomaly five light-years across. Where is it? We don't know. Where could it turn up? Not a clue. Who can save us all? We'll find out later this year, as season four is set to premiere in 2021. Star Trek: Picard Returns for Season 2 in 2022 By Elio Lleo While Discovery focuses on the large-scale event to tie the story together, season two of Star Trek: Picard, coming in 2022, is all the more personal. The camera moves slowly towards Château Picard, and we then transition inside the home of the retired Admiral, weaving our way through his study. On a table in the centre of the room is a Bajoran tablet, cracked and broken, possibly from the lost city of B'Hala. A painting of the Enterprise-D overhangs the mantle where a bronze sculpture of a farmer and horse-drawn plough rests in the centre. Picard's chair sits behind a desk, draped in a Mintakan tapestry. On the desk we see a model of the USS Stargazer, a teacup and saucer–decaf perhaps?–and a small Kurlan naiskos perched on the edge of the table. We pass over a combadge, a Dixon Hill novel and a copy of Paradise Lost. When Picard's voiceover talks of “what we wish we had done in a crisis,” the shot sits squarely on the hull of the Stargazer. We then cut to a gaming table upon which sits a deck of cards and a solitary queen of hearts. The card dissolves before our eyes until all that is left is one corner, and the letter that tells us so much–Q. Q-ed Up For The Big Reveal Patrick Stewart spoke with Wil Wheaton about the second season of Picard, teasing the different “times” that we will see that have never been seen onscreen before. John de Lancie then beams in from his boat, expressing his delight at the opportunity to return to the role and his amazing ability to age himself up for the part. Sir Patrick also hints at the critical moment Q returns and teases the trauma surrounding it. While De Lancie remarks on the apparent ease he can slip back into character, describing Q as annoying and self-involved. Lower Decks Season 2 Teaser By Rosko McQueen Paramount+ also announced season two of Star Trek: Lower Decks will premiere later this year, and like any episode of Lower Decks, there's a lot of detail in a short amount of time. Image: StarTrek.com We see the Cerritos, with Mariner, Tendi and Rutherford hanging out. We cut to a Miranda class starship, the USS Macduff, activating evasive maneuvers. Then out of nowhere, a mugato! Mariner shows off her sweet anbo-jyutsu moves, red suit and all. Commander Ransom seems to have god-like powers, then–cut to a Pakled phaser party. A group of Cardassians get their butts kicked by Mariner wearing 80's workout gear–THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!!! All hell breaks loose when snakes grow arms and attack Tendi, then we relax with the Lower Deckers in the comfort of the brig. But where is Boimler, you ask? He's staring into the void and screaming for all to hear. Captain Riker throws out some more jazz references, but sadly Boimler didn't get the joke as the Titan moves into some sort of wormhole or spatial distortion while under fire from multiple craft. Season two of Lower Decks will premiere on Thursday, August 12, 2021. Star Trek: Prodigy: More Info! By Cat Hough And finally, we received a brief synopsis about the other animated series coming out, Star Trek: Prodigy. Co-creator Dan Hageman confirmed the series is set in the Delta Quadrant in the year 2383. It features a group of young aliens who find a lost Starfleet vessel that happens to be equipped with an EJH–Emergency Janeway Hologram. This training hologram was designed to assist a crew that may have strayed too far off course and is probably programmed to locate coffee in any nearby nebulae. Image: TrekMovie.com The animation for the Janeway hologram was also revealed during First Contact Day, with Kate Mulgrew noting that the Hageman brothers insisted on “...making the character so beautiful.” CQ: With all the new Star Trek updates, what was the biggest surprise for you? Was there anything you were hoping they were going to announce? STAR TREK GAMING NEWS April Fools...But Maybe Not? By Cat Hough It was a quiet Friday morning at Ambassador Kael's house. Coffee had been achieved. The toast was buttered. Star Trek Online's dutiful Community Manager opened up his Twitter feed and spit coffee all over his keyboard. At least, if his post from April 2nd is any indication that's what happened. “Morning folks! Did anything interesting happen while I was WHAT THE F…” https://twitter.com/AmbassadorKael/status/1378010255716622336?s=20 What was all the fuss? Well, it was an 11:59pm April Fool's Day post to the official STO Twitter account. If it's not just an April Fool's prank, then it might spell doom for Kael's jokingly vocal anti-T6 Oberth crusade. The post in question sported two images of what can only be a 2411 treatment of the Oberth-class. The images were captioned “Kael's asleep! Post it post it POST IT!“ https://twitter.com/trekonlinegame/status/1377878220712914945?s=20 Yes, it was still April Fools. But, consider… someone clearly spent the time to model this 2411 Oberth to what looks like at least late-stage Work-In-Progress. It's worth remembering that on a recent live stream of his work, Thomas Marrone pointed out that they sometimes have the ship art done well before the systems designers have the ship built. So, perhaps that's the case here. But in any case, it's hope for those Oberth fans among you, Captains. CQ: Would a T6 Oberth be the greatest starship in the game or the GREATEST starship in the game? What would be a fitting trait for such a fine ship? Delta Recruitment Returns! By Cat Hough Announced earlier today, and starting April 15th on PC and May 13th on Xbox and PS4, you can create a new Delta Recruit character. However, this Delta Recruit event has been slightly modified. You'll still earn extra rewards, and gain special account unlocks, but the devs have removed some out-of-date missions and added new goals with new rewards. For example, reputation mark reward boxes have been updated so that you can claim all of the reputation mark options, not just the ones that were around during the first launch of Delta Recruitment. And, there's now a reward for reaching level 60, which gives you even more marks, Reputation dilithium, as well as salvage. Plus, there's new rewards for completing your faction's Admiralty campaign, which features a very special Admiralty card: the U.S.S. Voyager! Existing Delta Recruits will be able to complete these new goals as well, and if you've already finished them, you can claim the rewards immediately. Remember, to become a Delta Recruit and gain access to the rewards, you need to make a new 2409 Starfleet character, a Klingon Defense Force character, or a Romulan Republic character during the event, then you have to complete the tutorial and receive the special Delta Recruit tesseract transceiver device. Once you receive the device, your character is a Delta Recruit and you can complete the goals any time and claim the rewards, even after the event ends. Image: Cryptic Studios. Gambling and the Future of Loot Boxes Written by Elio Lleo Lock Boxes. A recurring topic of conversation on this show since their introduction into Star Trek Online those many moons–in 2012. Nowadays, they're so ingrained into gaming ecosystems–not just STO–that most people have accepted their permanence. But does that mean we shouldn't continue to look at the relationship between STO's Lock Boxes–and every other video game's respective lootbox–and gambling? No, because as the mechanic continues to become part of the mainstream, it's important to understand the impact it can have. Even if we have been told it's not gambling because you get a “reward in every box.” Image: Cryptic Studios. In an April 2nd article on Ars Technica, writer Sam Machkovech spotlights new research from four British Universities, commissioned by the gambling-protection advocacy group BeGambleAware. What does the research suggest? “[T]he authors determine that loot box purchasing has a statistically significant tie to problem gambling behaviors.” So… how can we mitigate the problem? The suggestion is to go cold turkey. “The report leans toward starting with outright bans of paid loot boxes in software—as in, the easily defined practice of ‘any game-related purchase with a chance-based outcome'—or at least requiring more fully transparent ‘odds' statements about the likelihood of specific in-game items in those loot boxes.” Image: BeGambleAware, University of Plymouth, and University of Wolverhampton, via Ars Technica. The report itself says particular circles of gamers are more susceptible to the lure of loot boxes, stating there are groups which are particularly at risk. ”Those particularly affected include males and younger gamers, with our survey screen of over 14k gamers also suggesting that those with lower educational attainment and lower levels of employment may be disproportionately affected. These factors, however, are unlikely to be limited to loot boxes.” Fleet Command Charts Its Next Course By Thomas Reynolds It's bedtime for those old scientists in Fleet Command, but Scopely's already sharing where the rest of 2021 will go. Players have a number of developments to look forward to, including an entirely new Officer Away Teams system. Send your unused characters out on errands–sorry, special assignments, and receive goods should they succeed in their tasks. And if they can't handle even that, well, you can always send them to Starbase 80. https://startrekfleetcommand.scopely.com/2021/03/30/roadmap-update-march-2021/ Cetacean Citation in Timelines By Thomas Reynolds George and Gracie are now crew members in Timelines. If this sounds like an April Fool's prank, I assure you, it isn't. George and Gracie are now crew members. Complete the three temporary achievement tiers before April 15th, and you can finally staff your ship's Cetacean Ops facility. Assuming you have the transparent aluminum on hand, of course. Image: Disruptor Beam. It's Time to Re-enter the Nexus with Star Trek: Legends By Rosko McQueen Load up your favourite Personal Access Display Device and get set to enter the Nexus. Star Trek: Legends has launched on Apple Arcade this week and we've had a brief look at the turn-based game. You are the captain of the U.S.S. Artemis, a ship designed to enter the Nexus and draw on the unique properties of the ethereal energy ribbon. Over the course of the game you build a crew of Trek favourites from across timelines and universes to take on missions, collect resources, and power up your characters. The developers explain in a blog post on StarTrek.com their decision to base the premise of the game around the Nexus, as opposed to other ways of putting characters in a blender like the holodeck, or using Q or the Talosians. Instead they take the largely unexplored idea of the Nexus and expand upon it, incorporating the idea that it was made by design. In a familiar Ready Player One-type premise, each character has their own utopian reality sphere, which is also infinite. So, there's lots of room to grow. But How Does It Play? Image: StarTrek.com The gameplay is straightforward, tap the bad guy to target them. You can use Worf's battle cry to lower morale (it's super effective!), and there are your typical character class types; engineering, medical, security, etc. I've only played a few early missions as it guides you through how to assemble your team, battle the bad guys and power up your crew using latinum, protomatter and bio-mimetic gels as some of the in-game currency. But it's also a brand new game on the platform, and it shows. I had to force quit a couple of times after the game froze at the same point. The artwork and the attention to detail is excellent. The Cardassians look menacing and there are a few costume callbacks to Voyager and Deep Space Nine standalone episodes. So far so good, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the game grows over time.

It's a holodeck episode! Picard, Crusher, Data, and Whalen (who's Whalen?) get stuck acting out an old Dixon Hill detective novel, but the Jarada grow irritated and impatient. Dixon Hill's music is the boom bap mantra of a musical nomad; reflecting the emotions and humor of a man who's had to climb his way out of obscurity. He was living out of his van, traveling the country, digging for records, and working any gig he could find. With an SP-404, an analog tape machine, and a portable turntable, he crafted two beat tapes which eventually led to a watershed collaboration with Detroit rapper Guilty Simpson called 'Actus Reus'. We talk about the journey; the 10,000 hours therein, that result in his newest instrumental album, 'Holodeck Beats: Program 3,' which beautifully captures the feeling of isolation while also being a treasure trove of head-nodding beats. Gotta go BACK in time! There's always something thrilling about taking the odd uniforms and social norms of the 24th century and putting them in modern genre settings like the hard-boiled detective stories we know from Raymond Chandler novels and L.A. Confidential. "The Big Goodbye" puts Captain Picard in the role of tropey Dixon Hill on the holodeck, and introduces another trope Star Trek will visit again and again: holodeck malfunctions. Greg hosts this discussion and loves taking the piss out of 80s genre television, Kate jumps into the palpable sexual tension between Crusher and Picard, Jimmie G loves Data's origins in Brazil, and Erik is available to writer's rooms to make up names of said 80s genre television. BLACK LIVES MATTER Federation Council Members include: Mark, Nyssa, Nicole, Becky, Cristina, and Kent SYNOPSIS: Captain Picard must study for a very specific diplomatic engagement with an insectoid species, known as the Jarada. The last encounter with these particular people ended terribly for the Starfleet captain involved in the exchange, as well as 20 years of no contact between the Jarada and the Federation. The pressure is high, especially if Picard wants to survive the encounter, but Counselor Troi suggests that there is such a thing as studying too hard for something and that the captain might do himself some good by visiting the newly upgraded Holodeck for some recreation. He engages in a Private Eye scenario, playing the hero Dixon Hill in the gangster drama, and immediately finds the world the Holodeck creates to be just as vivid and real as the ship and her complement. So he invites his crew to join him in the fun! An invitation that Dr. Crusher, Data, and, as requested, the ship's expert on the 20th century, Whalen, are happy to take up. But the probe the Jarada send out to scan the Enterprise causes a malfunction in the Holodeck's circuitry and the captain and his companions become trapped inside the simulated world, where they find themselves on the wrong side of a mob boss by the name of Redblock. At first it's all fun and games, and even possibly a romantic interlude for Picard and Dr. Crusher. But after a stint under interrogation by the police, Picard (as Dixon Hill) encounters Redblock and his goons, who come in search of a mysterious item that will provide them with great riches. The encounter goes south fast, when Whalen is shot and, despite the Holodeck's safety protocols, begins to bleed out on the floor of Dixon Hill's office. In a race to get his injured crewman out of the Holodeck where he can be saved, Picard decides the only way forward is to tell the holographic character Redblock that he is not, in fact real, and that this is just a simulated world. Meanwhile, Commander Riker continues to try to stall the Jarada, who will only speak to Captain Picard and grow increasingly put out by the captain's absence. Wesley Crusher engages in a risky procedure to get the Holodeck doors open and the program to deactivate, and it works; but Redblock takes the opportunity to deny Picard and his team their exit, and instead decides this new world is his to plunder. After Redblock disappears into thin air outside the Holodeck doors, Data carries Whalen to Sickbay, with Dr. Crusher in tow; leaving Picard to reconcile what just happened for his newfound holographic friend, Detective Dan Bell.

Star Trek First Contact is my favourite Star Trek movie. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our beloved franchise. In this video, I geek out with delight over the movie, and yes, I point out a couple of things that could have been even better. Join me as I review the 10 episodes and movies that you should watch before Star Trek Picard. https://www.buymeacoffee.com/AdamDavidCollings ----more---- Transcript Welcome to Nerd Heaven.I’m Adam David Collins, the author of Jewel of The StarsAnd I am a nerd. This is episode 6 of the podcast, and we’re continuing our look at the 10 episodes and movies you should check out before watching Star Trek Picard, which goes live late January. Today, we’re looking at Star Trek First Contact. The IMDB description for this movie readsThe Borg travel back in time intent on preventing Earth’s first contact with an alien species. Captain Picard and his crew pursue them to ensure that Zefram Cochrane makes his maiden flight reaching warp speed. And this movie first appeared in cinemas on the 13th of November 1996, which was in the UK, prior to the american release on the 22nd of November. Here in Australia, we didn’t get it until the 28th. Let’s do it. This is my favourite Star Trek movie. It came out during the year of the 30th anniversary of Star Trek. What an awesome year that was. We got Trials and Tribble-ations, which was amazing. We get this movie, which was amazing, and we got Flashback over on voyager, which was really good. There are some nice 30th anniversary tidbits in this movie that link it to other Star Trek shows. We’ll cover them as we get to them. Let’s start by saying that the music in this movie is incredible. Jerry Goldsmith composed a hauntingly beautiful theme for First Contact.I always sit through the opening credits just to listen to it. Plus, the names slowly coming into focus looks pretty cool. Nice little callback at the start, seeing Picard in his TNG uniform for the flashback to Best of Both Worlds. That pull back shot gives us a sense of the vastness of the Borg ship. And as Picard wakes from his nightmare, we get our first glimpse of the new TNG movie-era uniforms. This is my favourite Star Trek uniform. It looks so cool. I really want one. Picard is still having nightmare about his assimilation. I image, after going through something like that, the nightmare would never stop. Of course it’s implied that the nightmare is caused by the proximity of the Borg ship. You gotta wonder what made the Borg decide to send another shop to assimilate Earth at this moment. Clearly, they still think one cube is enough. And then we get another first. Our first glimpse at the new USS Enterprise, NCC 1701-E.The last Enterprise was destroyed in the previous movie, Star Trek Generations. The Enterprise E looks fantastic. Sleeker, meaner than the D. Of course, I also loved the D. But this new Enterprise was made for the big screen, and it fills it beautifully. Gorgeous image of a nebula behind the ship, too. Do you think Starfleet’s reluctance to let Picard anywhere near the Borg is more related to his previous assimilation, or his handling of the Hugh situation? Either way, it’s a foolish decision. No one knows the Borg better than Picard. The voice effect used for the Borg collective in this movie is creepier than in the TV show. I love the bridge of the Enterprise E. Those little screens for Picard, Riker, and Troi, the little corner desks for Data and Hawke. Fantastic production design. And that Borg cube. So much more detailed than the model used on the TV show. And here’s a first connection to other Star Trek. The Defiant from Deep Space Nine has joined the fight against the Borg. Obviously. This ship was designed to fight the Borg. It was likely one of the weapons shelby was working on prior to Best of both Worlds. Remember, those new weapons that weren’t ready yet. The Defiant gives us the perfect opportunity to bring Worf into the story, who was a series regular on Deep Space Nine at this time. I love the holographic viewscreen on the Enterprise E. I wish they’d continued to use that effect in subsequent movies. Picard can still hear the Borg in his head. Surprising, since he no longer has any implants. But given how hard it was for the doctor to remove all of Seven’s implants in Voyager, let’s assume maybe there’s still a little something in there. He gets some inside information on a weak spot that allows them to destroy the cube. This seems a little problematic. Remember, Borg cubes are extremely redundant. They shouldn’t have weak spots like that that cause the whole thing to blow up. I mean, this isn’t the blooming death star. But, they need to keep the story moving. The Borg need an excuse to time travel into the past. This, of course, makes absolutely no sense.First, if the Borg simple go back in time and assimilate species when they were vulnerable, why not just do that to begin with. But there’s a bigger problem. What do the Borg gain by assimilating a broken earth that is still recovering from world war 3? Their technology is useless. Biologically, humans are that different to many other species. It makes zero sense for the Borg to want to assimilate 21st century earth. So, the very premise here is filled with plot holes. But, I forgive them, because this movie is awesome. What do you want from me? So the Borg and the Enterprise arrive on my 85th birthday. And you better believe, when I turn 85, I’ll be making a pilgrimage to Montana, USA to meet the Vulcans. But I digress.Interestingly, 2063 is also the 100th anniversary of Star Trek. First Contact presents us with a very different Zephram Cochrane that we are used to, from his appearance in the original series. He’s not the amazing historical figure that starfleet puts on a pedestal. One of the first things we hear him say is “I sure as hell am not going up there sober.”Surprise surprise, Cochrane was human. This is a theme through the whole movie. We have a tendency to venerate great men and women from history, and I’m not saying we shouldn’t, but, these people were human just like us, with the same flaws and emotions. They burped and broke wind just like we do. James Cromwell and Alfre Goodard are both great as Cochrane and lily. Woodward is especially awesome as lily. The enterprise destroys the Borg sphere. Again, it all seems too easy. I remember thinking, the first time I saw this, they had 2 Borg ships, and they’re both destroyed. We’re not even 30 minutes into this movie. So much for a movie about the Borg.Of course, seeing the enterprise slowly get turned into a Borg ship ended up being much more compelling. So, it’s all good. I love time travel stories, especially if they are internally consistent. We’d never seen the TNG crew interact with present day. This was as close as we’d get. This was kind of TNG’s Star Trek 4. I also like the new engineering set for the Enterprise E, with that massive warp core. The idea of tunring a left-over nuclear missile into Earth’s first warp-speed ship is symbolic. And kinda cool. The sickbay on the Enterprise E looks very much like the Voyager sickbay. This was probably just a cost-saving choice to re-use an existing set, but in my mind, back in the day, it was a deliberate creative choice, to make the two newer ships, Enterprise E and Voyager, look alike. And now we get our next link to other Star Trek. And this is brilliantly done. Crusher needs a diversion to get every away from sickbay before the Borg break in, so, of course, they activate the Enterprise EMH, brilliantly played by Robert Picardo from Voyager. I love this scene. I always have. Obviously the enterprise sickbay would have an EMH. They simply don’t use it because they have a medical staff. If you count Zephram Cochrane as a TOS reference, then this movie has now included cameos of ships and characters from all the other Star Trek shows that existed at the time. Troi’s character doesn’t get a lot to do in this movie. In the previous movie, she had some fantastic scenes where she actually got to be a counselor. Here, she’s mainly relegated to comic relief. Still, Marina Sirtis does a good job of it. The emotion chip is put to good use in this story. And despite Data initially being quite annoying (deliberately so) I thought it was used effectively back in Generations as well. It was very thematic in that movie. And it plays an important part in First Contact as well. It’s interesting to know that data can de-activate the chip. Don’t you wish you could simply turn off your emotions sometimes. It would be handy. And now we get our first proper look at the Borg in their new big-screen, bigger budget glory. They look fantastic. So much detail. The chalky skin that looks like makeup is replaced with slimy pasty skin that looks a lot more realistic. The costumes are more detailed. And the Borg represent many different species. There are Klingon Borg, Cardassian Borg, Bolian Borg. If you look closely, you’ll notice all sorts of species. The Borg visual effects for things like their personal force field have also been updated. This is the first time we see the use of assimilation tubules. The assimilation process has always been a bit of a mystery. But here we see the injection of nano-probes (not specifically mentioned in this movie, but explored later in voyager). There’s a chilling moment when an assimilated crew member asks Picard for help.Picard shoots him dead. They don’t have the resources or the ability to surgically disconnect and restore each assimilated crew member right now, and Picard knows from personal experience, that it’s better to die than be a Borg drone. Riker and Troi explain the Roddenberry philosophy to Cochrane. Tomorrow morning, earth will make first contact with aliens after his successful warp test. Within a few decades, war, poverty, disease are all erased. This makes First Contact a very Star Trek show, again cementing it’s place as a 30th anniversary celebration movie. Picard meets Lily. I really like the friendship that develops between them.Picard manages to convince her that he really is from the future.I have to say I really like that when the window opens, and they see earth, they’re over Australia.Yeah! And we meet the Borg queen for the first time. The visual effect of her coming down from the ceiling is fantastic. The Borg queen is a really interesting concept. In a way, she contradicts what the Borg have been established to be.She refers to herself as I. Saying I am the Borg. Here’s the way I’ve always thought of her.She is the central hub of the Borg.Up until now, we’ve always assumed the Borg collective was a peer-to-peer network, but now it seems they are a client-server network. The queen is the server. You could say that the collective consciousness is her consciousness. This is not really what was previously established, but it’s interesting.I think that the Borg work better without the queen. But I think they felt a movie must have a villain that audiences can relate to. And I do admit that the Borg queen fits this bill very well. Alice Krige plays her brilliantly. There’s a lot about the queen that doesn’t make sense. She was on the Borg cube that was destroyed in best of both worlds. The same biological organism. But that ship was destroyed. And after she dies here, we’ll see her again in Voyager. Her explanation for this is “You’ve become small. You humans think in this three-dimensional terms”, which is a total cop-out. This is writer slang for “I don’t have an explanation for this that makes sense.” Picard gives Lily the ridiculous line about there being no money in the 24th century. Everyone works to better themselves and the rest of humanity.Which is total nonsense, of course. A system like that cannot work. The biggest issue I see is the unwanted jobs. Who cleans the toilets? Sure, in the Star Trek world, I would work hard writing books or exploring space, all in an effort to better myself and humanity. But who does the menial jobs that nobody wants? What motivates people to take that on? And we know that people do these menial jobs, it’s not all just robots, because Rom works waste extraction, literally wading in sewage, on deep space nine.Anyway. The holodeck scene is FANTASTIC.It ties us all the way back to TNG season 1, where Picard used to play Dixon Hill on the holodeck. But Dixon Hill never looked this good, with massive sets, heaps of extras and exciting action set pieces.I love it.The idea to use a holographic tommy gun to kill the Borg is very clever. Bullets are not something they’ll have adapted to. We see first hand just how much hurt and pain Picard still has buried, as he continues to pump the Borg full of bullets, long after it’s dead. It’s all come back to the forefront for him, like it was yesterday. And the carelessness when he says “this drone was ensign lynch.”I understand. In his mind, this is not ensign lynch. This is a drone. But still. This scene is really powerful. Nice little cameo from Reg Barclay. It doesn’t make a heap of sense that so many people from the enterprise d wind up on the enterprise e. Not just the senior staff, but people like Nurse Ogawa and Barclay. But, it’s nice to see them so whatever. Cochrane is finding it very difficult to live up to the celebrity everyone keeps telling him he’ll have. His discomfort make sense. Who could live up to that kind of hero worship. But at the same time, given his importance in their world, I understand the hero worship. This is the first time we see the new space suits, which will come back again in Voyager. The battle on the hull near the deflector dish is fantastic. Slow, but awesome. It’s pretty unique. But Worf’s line “Assimilate this” is cheesy and feels like it’s out of a really bad action movie parody. Also, why is his voice distorted? He sounds like a robot. Data’s assimilation is interesting. Usually, they add cybernetic implants into biological beings. But here, they’re adding biological elements to a cybernetic being. They do like the mixture. There’s a whole lot of manipulation going on here. The queen reactivates his emotion chip, which makes him a LOT easier to manipulate. Cochrane is a far cry from the historical figure they all talk about, but, as he gets older, he will become more like that figure. There’s some fantastic drama between Picard and Worf on the bridge.Worf accuses Picard of allowing his personal experiences with the Borg to influence his judgement. And of course that’s influencing his judgement. How could it not?The scene between Picard and Lily in the conference room is amazing and powerful.Alfre Woodard and Patrick Stewart are incredible. This scene gives me so many chills. And there’s lots of thematic stuff in here too.Lily helps Picard realise that he’s being motivated by revenge and hate. And so he changes his plan. When they’re preparing the evacuate the enterprise, Picard says “see you on Gravette island.”I’ve tried googling this, to see if it’s a real place.I came up empty. But I have a head canon about this. I imagine that Gravette is an island that remains unpopulated through most of human history. And that Starfleet has standing orders that any crew who get stranded in earth’s past are to set themselves up there and stay out of history’s way.I think that would make a good TV show actually. Gravette Island, about a Starfleet crew making a new life on present day Earth. Of course, something would have to entice them out of hiding to interact with the rest of the world, or there’d be no storyBut I’m getting quite off topic now. I love how Zephram Cochrane can’t take off without his music. The Pheonix looks great. The perfect mix of old-fashioned real world space program, and the star trek future.I remember geeking out that the bussard collectors at the front of the nacelles resembled those on the original series enterprise. Does Picard really mean it when he offers to become Gorg again, in order to free Data?I have to think that he does. But, how could he possibly be willing to go through that again. That’s self-sacrifice. That’s friendship. But to willingly go into that living hell? It like how the Phoenix takes a few minutes to accelerate up to warp 1.The climactic battle in engineering has some awesome visual effects, included the death of the queen. The Borg shouldn’t really explode when the queen dies, but it kinda works for the movie. The flight of the phoenix, and the landing of the alien ship are full of the sense of wonder that Star Trek is sometimes known for.I remember sitting on the edge of my seat in the cinema, thinking “please be the Vulcans. Please be the Vulcans.”It had to be.I read that the design of the Vulcan ship was based on real-world descriptions of UFOs.The implied idea being that Vulcans had previously visited earth discreetly. So there you have it. My favourite Star Trek movie. It’s got some little flaws, but there’s so much good stuff they’re easy to forgive. Do you think we’ll see the Borg Queen again in Star Trek Picard? Will they acknowledge her? It’ll be interesting to find out. Next time, we delve into the origin of another character that is returning for Picard. Seven of Nine.I’ll see you for my favourite episode of Star Trek Voyager.Scorpion. Live long and prosper.Make it so.

I'm convinced Picard liked Dixon Hill as a kid and slowly fell out of love with them as he grew older. You can't trust nostalgia Jean-Luc. This week's episode is “Manhunt.”
Diese Woche bekommt Papa Picard eine neue Freundin. Und in der zweiten Folge fragen wir uns, wo Dixon Hill ist, wenn man ihn mal braucht! Viel Spaß!
Gothic Fiction in Star Trek: Voyager. Even starship captains, with the whole galaxy to explore, need a bit of mindless escapism from time to time. While Jean-Luc Picard donned his fedora and trench coat to live out a holographic fantasy life as the surly gumshoe Dixon Hill, Kathryn Janeway’s choice of entertainment might seem—at least on the surface—even less in keeping with her “real” personality. In three early episodes of Star Trek: Voyager—“Cathexis,” “Learning Curve,” and “Persistence of Vision”—we see her indulge in a holonovel that appears to combine elements of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847), Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw (1898), and Rebecca, the 1938 novel by Dame Daphne du Maurier. In her holographic escape from life in the Delta Quadrant, Janeway played the role of a wide-eyed governess who finds herself at the heart of a sinister gothic mystery. In this episode of Primitive Culture, hosts Clara Cook and Duncan Barrett take a look at the literary influences on Captain Janeway’s Lambda One holonovel, considering questions of female agency, repressed sexuality, and the apparent value of low-brow entertainment to Starfleet’s high-ranking officers. We also question whether a show as bright and cheery as Star Trek: Voyager can ever truly accommodate Gothicism. The Holodeck and Video Games. For Starfleet’s avid gamers, the holodeck offers a seemingly endless repertoire of thrills. You can battle the Spartans at Thermopylae one minute and knock back a martini—shaken, not stirred—the next. And, you can do it all without leaving the safety (mortality subroutines permitting) of a single room. Since Captain Picard first donned his fedora and trench coat in the role of pulpy noir sleuth Dixon Hill in 1988’s “The Big Goodbye,” Star Trek’s holographic adventures have given us a glimpse into the fantasy lives—and occasionally the guilty pleasures—of our crews. We’ve seen Tom Paris jump into action as sci-fi hero Captain Proton, Julian Bashir foil devious plans as a debonair spy, and Captain Janeway roam the halls of Victorian gothic romance. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Brandi Jackola of Warp Five and Live from The Edge for a look at Star Trek’s holo-adventures, focusing on how video game culture is reflected in these 24th-century entertainment systems. Does the way a person plays offer insight into their character? Is it cheating to set the difficulty settings to minimum? And what can the unwinnable game—the no-win scenario—tell us about how our heroes will face death in the real world? Welcome to Twenty Dollars a Day, the podcast where we explore our favorite fictional characters in the Star Trek: TNG universe! Nathan and Eppy discuss the character of Dixon Hill as introduced in S1E11 The Big Goodbye. When Captain Picard decides to destress by bringing up his favorite noir detective program on the newly upgraded holodeck, it all seems like fun and games - until a remote probe sends things haywire and the fictional and real dangers facing the Enterprise start to converge. This is a well-constructed episode with some poignant moments among all the scenery chewing. (Happy April, everyone!) Apologies for the audio issues in this recording - but, while this episode started as a "prank" we really did enjoy discussing this episode, and pulled some real lessons out of in our second half as well. We will be back to our normal Rockford discussion in our next episode. Want more Rockford Files trivia, notes and ephemera? Check out the Two Hundred a Day Rockford Files Files! Paoletta and Epidiah Ravachol. We are exploring the intensely weird and interesting world of the 70s TV detective show The Rockford Files. Half celebration and half analysis, we break down episodes of the show and then analyze how and why they work as great pieces of narrative and character-building. In each episode of Two Hundred a Day, we watch an episode, recap and review it as fans of the show, and then tease out specific elements from that episode that hold lessons for writers, gamers and anyone else interested in making better narratives.
On this episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, it's the debut of the classic Dixon Hill program on our first big holodeck episode! This was the earliest aired episode to win an Emmy Award (Outstanding Costumes for a Series). First aired January 11, 1988
Tom Paris is convicted of murder… but will this episode be convicted of being trash? Voyager's homage to film noir thrillers spits tropes faster than Dixon Hill's tommy gun spits hot lead, but it might not be enough to fend off a harsh verdict at the hands of Judge Later's space court! Also: Kim adds “judgmental tattletale” to his already-impressive resume of character flaws. Delta Quadrant dogs look an awful lot like Alpha Quadrant dogs and the Voices from the Past don't like it one bit. The Voyager writers room tries to write sexy, and the audience pays the price. Is “Ex Post Facto” good…or is it garbage?
This week, our intrepid HFO crew tangle with the ever-increasing intricacies of the Holodeck (*tm, I'm sure). In this episode, we see the first appearance of Capt. Picard's alter-ego, Dixon Hill. "Dix" is a film-noir-esque detective from 1930s San Francisco (the city destined to become the headquarters of Starfleet... coincidence? I THINK NOT!) Like everything on the Holodeck (*tm *c *r) things go horribly awry and we question the very nature of our existence. Get ready to boldly go into this weeks episode - THE BIG GOODBYE!!!

Surena Marie from The Dungeon Rats joins the Pats to watch Manhunt, an episode featuring the return of Lwaxana Troi, a Dixon Hill holodeck adventure, and a certain British soft-rock star in a full-body alien fish costume.
When the entire crew passes out after traveling through a wormhole, the evidence starts to finally persuade them that Data is the gravest threat to the ship that they face on an ongoing basis. Now Picard has to go all Dixon Hill on everybody's ass until he can get some answers. Will Data be stripped down to his wires? Where the hell was Guinan during this whole thing? Why can't Worf be bothered to implement any basic security procedures? It's the episode where Troi huffs some green paint.

The Big Goodbye. Holodeck malfunctions became a staple of Star Trek plot devices, and Picard’s Dixon Hill program is the glitch that started it all.
