Today's guest, Fly Anakin, is no stranger to delivering albums that leave a distinct imprint on the listener. As seen on past records like Frank that envelop you in dusty old soul records and introspection, and FlySiifu's that welcomed you into this record shop concept with two homies who enjoy trading bars over some sick jazz rap instrumentals. But on his latest album, (The) Forever Dream, Fly Anakin takes a noticeably different approach. Opting not to follow a distinct concept or theme, Frank traded pre-meditated forethought for a more free-wheeling approach, allowing for the album to reveal itself through fun studio sessions with the album's executive producer, Detroit legend Quelle Chris. The results of this approach were terrific, as this new album sees Fly Anakin operate with so much freedom, embracing new sounds and collaborators, resulting in an incredibly loose and dynamic album that manages to push all the right buttons, balancing spontaneity with expertly crafted cohesion. In this episode, we dive into how Frank's relationship with Quelle was formed, the effortlessly natural collaborative process creating this new album, and much more! The Plug (0:45). The Interview (2:44). Frank's feelings towards the release of (The) Forever Dream (4:58). Frank touring with his partner, bbymutha (7:09). The formation of Fly Anakin and Quelle Chris' relationship (11:48). What makes Quelle special as an artist and collaborator (16:50). How Quelle and Fly Anakin are ‘opposites' (22:27). Creative decision-making responsibilities between Fly Anakin and Quelle (24:13). The musical direction of (The) Forever Dream (26:30). Fly Anakin's mindset when creating (The) Forever Dream (30:42). The heartfelt and open nature of (The) Forever Dream (35:00). Why Fly Anakin feels his latest album is his best (39:54). The key collaborations on (The) Forever Dream (43:18). Our guest today is amazing. Hands down one of my favorite producers out right now. His sound is jazzy, laid back. It is like what I would imagine Digable Planets sounding like in 2024. He has recently put out an incredible piece of art called 74: Out of Time featuring a host of emcees, Awon, ill Camille, vic Spencer, pink siifu, billy woods, tha God Fahim, Fly Anakin, Cooley High and many more. It might just be my favorite jazzy production since the era of Disable Planets and De LA Soul and the Native Tongues. It is a remarkable project that we are going to jump into right now with our guest, the one and only, Ol' Burger Beats! https://olburgerbeats.bandcamp.com/album/74-out-of-time The Boom Bap Chat is a podcast that explores Hip-Hop music and the people who create it. iomos marad, Profound, MC Till, and sometimes Beau Brown and Joe November discuss lyrics, production, classic albums, building community, and much more with a mix of legendary and up and coming artists. Oslo based producer Ol' Burger Beats released "74:Out of Time" in February on Coalmine Records. Each track on the project was produced at 74 beats per minute and is deeply inspired by the jazz records of 1974. It's a unique concept with an impressive list of guest emcee's including lojii, Ill Camille, Vic Spencer, billy woods, Pink Siifu, YUNGMORPHEUS, Quelle Chris, Gabe 'Nandez, and Fly Anakin. We spoke with Ol' Burger Beats about the inspiration for this project and his approach to working with his collaborators. Then we talked about his album pick for this episode - "Welcome 2 Detroit" by J Dilla. Stream and purchas "74:Out of Time" here: https://coalminerecords.bandcamp.com/

Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:21). The Interview (1:31). Within about 10 seconds of hearing Fly Anakin for the first time, I knew this guy was born to rap. Immediately, his raspy voice caught my attention, sounding like he had a built-in plug-in in his vocal chords… making his dazzling bars sound so special. In this episode, Richmond-born Frank, otherwise known as rapper-producer Fly Anakin joins the show. We discuss how he found his voice, established his vision for the almighty Mutant Academy, his recent achievements in FlySiifu's and Frank, and the impressive world-building that went into creating his cheeky and romantic new album, Skinemaxxx. The strain of hip-hop Frank likes to create, and making “mindless music” (1:39). How Frank developed his voice - RMPP patron q from nogod (8:27). The Richmond, Virgina music scene and its influence on Frank's musical tastes (12:51). The moment Frank realized music could be a real career path (15:54). The vision that Mutant Academy was founded on (18:27). FlySiifu's and the creative chemistry with Pink Siifu (23:57). The importance of Frank, and overcoming insecurity (28:35). Why Foisey is the jelly to Frank's peanut butter (34:35). The thinking behind separating the release of Side A and B of Skinemaxxx (38:34) The concept and sound of Skinemaxxx (40:45). The artistic growth Frank experienced creating Skinemaxxx (46:36). Upcoming work and shows from Fly Anakin, and Mutant Academy (51:05). Frank overcoming his hatred of jeans (54:34). This episode we have Producer and DJ Ewonee. I met Ewonee when he was performing as tour DJ for Fly Anakin. After meeting him and checking out much of his production work I simply had to have him on the podcast. It was great to be reminded about particular songs and for me, this one held a special place in my life as well. I really enjoyed speaking with Ewonee, and I hope you enjoy our convo as well. This week, I want to revisit one of my favorite episodes of Song Exploder, with Perfume Genius telling the story of making Slip Away. This episode originally came out in May 2017. The album the song's from, No Shape, went on to be nominated for a Grammy, and was named one of the year's best in lots of places. And next week, on March 16, Perfume Genius will be playing at the Song Exploder Stage at SXSW. I'm really excited to be putting on a showcase at the festival, and the other artists playing will be Kimbra, Sarah Kinsley, Fly Anakin, and Jenny Owen Youngs. For more information about the show: songexploder.net/sxsw - Mike Hadreas has been making music under the name Perfume Genius since 2008. In May 2017, he put out his fourth album, No Shape to widespread critical acclaim. In this episode, Mike breaks down the song Slip Away. I also spoke with producer Blake Mills, who also plays on the track, and recording engineer Shawn Everett about the unusual way the song was recorded. For more, visit songexploder.net/perfume-genius
Fly Anakin - "Ghost (feat. Nickelus F)" from the 2022 album Frank on Lex Records Ltd. Described by Madlib as "one of the illest MCs," anticipation has been high for the debut full-length from Richmond, VA-based rapper/producer Fly Anakin. On March 11th, that release will drop, titled Frank, via Lex Records. He notes the album draws inspiration from the "classic R&B and Soul" his dad played for him when he was a child. Today's Song of the Day features guest vocals from his "hero and mentor", as well as a fellow Richmond resident, Nickelus F, a seven-time "Freestyle Friday" champion on BET's weekly hip-hop show 106 & Park. Together, with Grammy-nominated producer Like (of Pac Div), they deliver a somber track befitting of the title "Ghost." Orange is the new proactive. From our parent's full names to the inaccuracies of the Earth's weather patterns, pain is down and Sugarland has grown. The angle factor can't be ignored. If it's called home does it really matter where it is? All the things needed to be seen are more times than not right in front us. The ability to know this is what is truly lacking. The peripheral experience works in tangents for human beings. Grown up moves, teenage adjustments, musical enlightenment, mad personal endeavors, and 2 cities = H-town and SD. Some things were never meant to happen and that's exactly why they do whether you see it or understand it or not. One sort of knows but can't fully grasp it until time says it's time to see the whole picture.... Come hear what your eyes are seeing with us.... With WPI! For 2 in a half years NASA had absolutely no problems and 2 very serious problems that simply could not be categorized and/or identified. It's always been in the peripheral but only until now that they can actually describe what that image is and was on the side. A 35 years focusing job coming out of and into full view.
