Seemed like a good moment to salute the city of LA, a city I never thought I'd end up residing in as a kid but where I now live and don't plan on leaving. A huge city, where horrible fires and climate change have destroyed the homes of thousands of people including some of those featured on this mix. If you are looking to support folks in need, check out: mutualaidla.org/ I recorded this mix live on Twitch, totally unplanned and a bit rough but fun, might try and do that more often this year? We'll see. Thanks as always for tuning in! Tracklist: Elusive ft. Aceyalone, will.i.am, People Under the Stairs, Warren G, Warren G, Vooodu ft. Meen Green, Funkdoobiest ft. B. Cox reviews West Coast hip-hop trio Tha Alkaholiks debut album 21 & Over, as it turns 30. The trio, made up of emcees Tash, E-Swift and J-Ro, formed in the late 1980s and were mentored by legend King Tee. After signing to Loud/RCA, the group started recording their debut album. The album would be a compact, but power-packed 35 minute effort that introduced this eclectic, but a serious group of emcess to the hip-hop game. The group's style, which was based around a fun-loving times filled with drinks, weed smoking and partying, was not of the slapstick or parody type of music that many thought it would be. Going more of the route of some of the West Coast contemporaries like Cypress Hill, Pharcyde and Souls of Mischief, the 'Liks' sound featured hard hitting and funky sample based beats with capable emceeing while maintaining a feel good vibe. The album featured the likes of Field Trip, Threat, the duo Lootpack (a young MadLib and Wildchild) from Stones Throw Records, and King Tee himself. The group and King Tee produced the majority of the album with E-Swift taking charge of much of the production credits. While none of the albums three singles charted on the Hot 100, they did catch on on the Hot Rap and R&B Charts and the group would gained a cult following in the coming years among West Coast fans and eventually worldwide due to their fun-loving demeanor while displaying a high level of emceeing and beats that could get the parties rocking or heads nodding.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Tha Alkaholiks Debut Album '21 & Over' Turns 25 | Anniversary Retrospectivehttps://albumism.com/features/tha-alkaholiks-debut-album-21-and-over-turns-25-anniversary-retrospectiveTime Is Illmatic: Tha Alkaholiks: 21& Overhttps://timeisillmatic.me/2017/06/02/tha-alkaholiks-21-over-august-24-1993/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

After that we have a good interview with Wildchild, a veteran MC who burst onto the indie scene with Lootpack in the 90's and has been putting out music ever since. His new record Omowale is an excellent example of grown man rap, still dope but dealing with mature subject matter and in some cases dealing with family issues directly. Back in the late 90’s me and mate Rees used to make each other mixtapes. We’d try and one up each other by finding mint tunes that other the one hadn’t heard. So spent a lot of time buying underground Hip Hop cd’s. We stumbled on an album called Superrappin’, the stand out track being New Years Resolution by Lootpack. Had never heard of them before but was impressed with a producer that would take on a Preemo sample. Their album Soundpieces : Da Antidote followed and the rest is history. Original Show Description: Out Da Box Radio is happy to bring you a brand new interview with emcee’s Frank Nitt and Illa J also known as the “Yancey Boys”. The group consists of the previous mentioned emcees, alongside the late Legendary Artist “J. Dilla” as the prime Producer. We were fortunate to speak with both Frank and Illa on a number of topics which included their new album “Sunset Blvd”, as well as the influence and impact their great brother “J. Dilla” had on them. Frank Nitt also took the time to share some insight into how the collaborations came about for the album, as well as the mission him and Illa set out to accomplish with the music. He took a moment to also speak on his recent solo releases. One of them, being a collaborative project with producer extraordinaire “Madlib” and expounded on what it was like working with him. He even spoke on the similarities between Madlib and Dilla, and gave some insight into how Dilla related to Lib, being an admirer of the earlier “Lootpack” records. We also got a chance to hear both artists speak on memorable moments shared with Dilla while out in L.A. As the interview came to a close, both artists delved briefly into their future goals as well as the next step for the group and the label Delicious Vinyl. Overall, I had a great time speaking with Frank and Illa J. They had a very happy and humble vibe during the interview, which made for a successful flowing conversation. Please take the time to listen and definitely feel free to share if you like what you hear. We hope you enjoy!

Let the Record Show – the crate-dug interview series in which artists discuss their favorite songs of all time as the tracks spin on vinyl – continues its fourth season today with rapper / singer Dudley Perkins aka Declaime. Dudley recently released a new collaborative album with Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Georgia Anne Muldrow – who is also his wife – entitled G&D "Black Love and War". Hot off the heels of this release, Perkins sat down with longtime friends Mike Pizzo and Warren Peace to discuss some of his most influential cuts of all time. Heavily influenced by the funk, his selections span classic cuts that somehow all related back to one another. Vinyl rarities and oddities are shown, such as a 1978 Parliament picture disc, a double-cut/parallel groove De La Soul record, and a Slick Rick "The Great Adventures of..." anniversary edition, complete with eye-patch, the latter courtesy of Urban Legends/UMVD. While discussing his first appearance on wax on Tha Alkaholiks’ 1995 "Coast II Coast" LP, which found him rhyming alongside The Lootpack on “WLIX”, host Mike Pizzo surprises Dudley by producing a lost, unreleased demo EP of his on cassette, entirely produced by Madlib. The tape was put together by Pizzo and Perkins 22 years ago, complete with cover art made in Corel Draw. Dudley’s reaction is priceless. Originally released Feb. 2020.

BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the @meda4ox #interview session! We continue our tour through Oxnard with the mighty MED, aka Medaphoar, who is putting quite a stamp on the end of 2015 with the "Bad Neighbor" LP, which is a collaboration with Blu and Madlib. We talk highlights and guest features from the LP, how he and Blu originally met and what'scoming in 2016 from MED's imprint Bang Ya Head Records. We always take time to go back and do a little history - how he met up with Madlib, Romes, Wildchild and the rest of Oxnards's hip-hop luminaries, appearances on the early Lootpack records, his tenure at Stones Throw Records and the new found independence he has with with his new label. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the @djromes1 #interview session! We can’t say how excited we were about this session. From the history with the Lootpack, his talent behind the boards and the video game habit - the #DJRomes resume 2nd to none. Let’s just lay it out there like this - Romes and his entire crew are the foundation of a sound and vibe that folks are STILL trying to replicate today, and the resume reflects it. We get into all the new stuff like his 5th Beatle-esque role in #Gangrene with #Alchemist & #OhNo, mixing and mastering records for your favorite hip-hop artists and the adjustments one has to make sonically for music in the phone / tablet world. It wouldn’t be a Southern Vangard interview unless we took a trip down memory lane - how Romes met #Madlib & #Wildchild, making beats with a Casio SK-1 & cassette deck combo, not to mention how they hooked up with the Alkaholiks. Did I hear it correctly - #Lootpack were almost signed to #Loud #Records around the same time as #WuTang & #MobbDeep?! Did Romes mention a Lootpack reunion show…and maybe a new record?! BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents @realgrandagent #interview #session !!! One of the finest to emerge from the Philly underground in the mid-to-late 90s, Grand Agent’s resume is an impressive one to say the least - and we like it when our interviewees like to tell stories as much as we like to hear them, and Grand certainly doesn’t disappoint. Grand talks getting the recording bug in high school, making moves with his first group Name, pumping early demos at Rich Medina’s & Bobbito’s Footwork establishment in Philly, not to mention a great convo about how INSANE the Philly hip-hop, soul & R&B scene was at this time. We get into the Groove Attack years, touring with Common, Lootpack & Camp Lo moving to Germany, and the making of his incredible collaboration with Pete Rock - “This is What They Meant”. We also chat about making the Rawkus 50, his self-imposed break from music in 2011, writing production cues for music libraries in Hollywood and his script writing talent. We also have a great round on the current trend of “throwback” hip-hop radio. Of course we get into the new project “AC Hip-Hop”, which is available now for FREE dollars, and what is coming for him in 2015 and beyond.
