Episode 114: Happy International Day of the Seafarer!

Happy International Day of the Seafarer! Get ready to set sail: June 25 is the Day of the Seafarer. Whether your job involves a large quantity of salt water, or not, this day is worth celebrating! Sailing has been in my family for generations and I am very happy to talk about it today with you. The main transport mode for global trade is ocean shipping (not plane): around 90% of traded goods are carried over the waves. As such, the oceans provide the main transport arteries for global trade. As demand for global freight increases, maritime trade volumes are set to triple to 2050. Maritime transport forms part of a whole cluster of economic activities that can create economic value added. The sea is still the most cost-effective way to transport goods. Marine biologists and oceanographers from every country have dedicated their lives to learning more about the ocean depths, and humans from every walk of life keep going to the sea to explore the planet. If trade by sea were limited in some way, or stopped altogether, there is no way that the global economy would be able to function. In other words, we owe our current ways of life to those who travel the seas. Seafarers are the pillars of the supply chains around the world. Trade is coming by sea. But because most people are not aware of them, they usually don't get the support they need. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed extraordinary demands on seafarers, with hundreds of thousands of men and women stranded on ships for months beyond their original contracts, unable to be repatriated due to national travel restrictions. A similar number of seafarers are unable to join ships and earn a living. This crew change challenge, which has been ongoing for nearly a year, is a real crisis. Fun activities to do during Happy International Day of the Seafarer: Education: Read a book or watch a movie about life at sea. Charity: Donate to a maritime charity. Local Coast Guard: if you live near a Coast Guard outpost, you might consider dropping in. This is a great opportunity to learn more about what the Coast Guard does. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/support

The importance of local knowledge: etiquette & manners: Business is about people. There is no shortage of competent and reliable people in the business world and manners can make the difference. Etiquette is the set of conventional rules of personal behavior in polite society. Manners are described as either good manners or as bad manners to indicate to a person whether or not his or her behavior is acceptable to the cultural group. These concepts are vital in life and in business. As times change, so do social norms for personal and professional behavior, but that doesn't mean the basics don't matter. Performance and quality are important but not exclusively. Attitude and privacy: in public & at home: With so many people working from home, privacy has taken on an added dimension: the privacy of information from the ordinary, everyday intrusion by family or colleagues. There is, for instance, the loss of privacy when your colleagues overhear you arguing with your family, or see what you read on the bookshelves behind you. Or the loss of privacy when your family can see what's on your computer or how you handled your calls. Working from home or having a home based business requires a strategy. You have the obligation to protect your private life and at the same time protect your company information. Share a positive attitude: A positive attitude is something that goes deeper and has an effect beyond surface cheer. Try to connect with people who like their job, have new ideas, and are interested in lots of other things besides work. It'll make your whole outlook better. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/support

If you want to see your business grow, it is vital that you have your eye on all the components that make up a successful marketing strategy. Pricing is one of them. Don Draper taught us a lot about marketing and he often used the 7 P's of marketing. Indeed, back in the 1960s, when marketing men smoked at their desks, a marketing notion was hatched that was so perfect that sixty one years later it is still considered an integral part of any marketing strategy. The seven Ps of marketing includes product, price, promotion, place, people, process, and physical evidence. On our episode today, we are going to focus on Pricing. Understanding the connection between the 7 P's is crucial and it is not recommended to decide on any of them in isolation from the others. Price: Reputation: charging the “wrong” or a low price will send a wrong signal to your customers Target group: focus on people that are willing and able to pay you Goal: the right price should help you achieve your business goals Income: the right price will help you generate enough income to cover your cost and make a healthy profit --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/support

Episode 109: Returns and Refunds

When a business sells merchandise, it might occasionally face returns and refunds. Returns and refunds are part of running any business. The average returns and refunds rate is around 6-8%. In accounting, a sales return represents a refund for a returned item, while a sales allowance represents a partial refund for an item that a customer keeps. This is a contra-revenue account, which means you subtract it from total, or gross, revenue on the income statement. In today's episode, we are going to talk about the best way to manage returns and refunds by focusing on your return and refund policy to best serve your customers. As much as you can, avoid arguing with your customers. Best way to minimize that, is to write a very clear return & refund policy! Company policies say a lot about you and your values. For instance, a product being shipped back and forth might not be cost effective for you, especially for small items. Hence, it is preferable to just refund a customer. Ask the customer why they want to return the product and ask for a picture of it. The goal here is to focus on having returning customers. A great way to do that after an incident is to give a discount. Another great way to deal with a defective item would be to suggest to the customers to donate it to a charity or recycle it. You could add a list of charities you are working with in your policy that the customer might be interested in donating the product to. These are original and personal ways of managing returns and refunds that will always set you up for repeat customers. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/support

Episode 107: Inventory management

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2021 14:33

One of the key lessons we learned from Dunder Mifflin is that your warehouse management is very important! What is inventory management? Inventory management is the function of understanding the stock mix of a company and the different demands on that stock. What type of companies hold inventory? Manufacturing & merchandising companies: retailers, restaurants, freight and logistics companies, etc. Any company that needs to stock products and goods. Manufacturing companies sell goods to earn revenue while merchandises companies resell goods to earn revenue. (sell vs. resell) Who in the company is in charge of it? The purchasing department is responsible for ensuring that the organization maintains the correct level of inventory to build and sell products. What is the relationship between inventory (Balance Sheet) & COGS (P&L)? Companies sell inventories to earn a profit. Before inventory is sold, it acts as an asset of the company. When it is sold, the cost converts into an expense, called the cost of goods sold. Why is inventory an asset? The intention is to make money out of it within the same year. Hence why it is under “current asset” because it is not supposed to stay long. The intention is to sell it and make money quickly. Most common types of inventory: 1- Raw materials (Inventory that was purchased to produce goods); Manufacturing companies only 2- Work-in-Progress (Inventory that was in the process as now); Manufacturing companies only 3- Finished goods (inventory that is available to be sold). Episode 106: What is COGS?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2021 15:01

Cost of goods sold (COGS) refers to the direct costs of producing the goods sold by a company. COGS includes the cost of the materials and labor directly used to create the goods. COGS excludes indirect expenses, such as distribution costs and sales force costs. Do all businesses have Cost Of Goods Sold? No! Many service companies do not have any cost of goods sold at all. COGS is defined as only the cost of inventory items sold during a given period. Not only do service companies have no goods to sell, but purely service companies also do not have inventories. Operating Expenses vs. COGS Unlike COGS, operating expenses (OPEX) are expenditures that are not directly tied to the production of goods or services. What Does the COGS Tell You? Why does it matter? Knowing a business' COGS helps evaluate profitability. The number that remains after you subtract COGS from your total revenue is known as your gross profit. The COGS is an important metric on the financial statements. The gross profit is a profitability measure that evaluates how efficient a company is in managing its labor and supplies in the production process. COGS fluctuates greatly depending on the quantity produced. Let's use the example of a farm that raises livestock and sells meat. Episode 104: Nonprofit: Beneficiaries Are Not Customers

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2021 16:12

One major challenge I have seen in nonprofit running social enterprises is vocabulary! When a for-profit "regular" business finds a way to create value for a customer, it has generally found its source of revenue; when a nonprofit finds a way to create value for a beneficiary, it has not identified its economic engine. That is very often a separate step. Nonprofit that are running social enterprises struggle more with the words to use than understanding the concept in itself. Words have power over mindsets, and your mindset impacts your actions. When the right words are used, the right decisions are made. The term funding model is different from business model to describe a framework. A business model incorporates choices about the cost structure and value proposition to the beneficiary. A funding model, however, focuses only on the funding, not on the programs and services offered to the beneficiary. A business model identifies the products or services the business plans to sell, its identified target market, and any anticipated expenses. A business model describes the methods the company will use to generate customers and revenue. Investing in the right people is also crucial! Many nonprofit have the feeling that they can't afford the right people. Hiring the right people is an essential part of scaling up for every enterprise. The social sector is no different as the skills required to sell, brand, and manage financials are specialized. Talking about business model, revenue and customer, will tremendously help in hiring the right people. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/support

Never overlook the importance of marketing. No matter how good your products or services are, people need to hear about them and marketing is the best way to spread the word and increase sales. Word of mouth and community are great ways to build buzz and business owners love it because for the most part, it's free. But in reality, building a customer base requires some more upfront investment. Fixed budgets: A new business may have to be more careful with their money, the option of having a fixed budget might be better. In your first year, you may simply have to find an amount that you feel you can afford and stick to it. It is also essential to have a marketing plan. Percentage of revenue: Most small businesses allocate a percentage of their total revenue to marketing. One of the main advantages of this percentage approach is that the budget is not fixed. The familiarity principle is the tendency among human beings to develop a preference for people and things which they see often. For instance, in relationships it tends to be the case that the more often we see someone, the more pleased we are to see that person and the more we like them. When exposed to something new or unknown most animals exhibit a form of fear or avoidance. This is probably an evolutionary development, things which are new or unknown may very well be predators. Repeated exposure to certain people will increase our attraction toward them. We are attracted to familiar people because we consider them to be safe and unlikely to cause harm. We build familiarity with the people with whom you have the most contact! This most important factor is proximity. Similarity is another factor that influences who we form relationships with. We are more likely to become friends or lovers with someone who is similar to us in background, attitudes, and lifestyle. In fact, there is no evidence that opposites attract. Rather, we are attracted to people who are most like us. Home cooking businesses are probably the oldest and first type of businesses that ever existed! I've seen so many home cooking & baking businesses around me thrive and becoming very successful! If running your own home cooking business is something you want to do, go for it! You don't need to be a certified cook! You don't need to know everything about opening and running a company. A lot is learned by simply doing! You also have enough material to start! You are already cooking and eating every day! Start with what you have and grow as you are getting more customers. You absolutely do not need any capital to start with! What you have in your kitchen today is enough! Packaging is very easy to find online and nutritional labels are very easy to make as well: Create & Generate Nutrition Labels | Nutritional Label Creator Software | Recipe Costing | Inventory Management | ReciPal The best way to get your name out there is to sell to family & friends first! I also love Local Markets! Most of them are amazing with a great community! The best way to turn your hobby into a part-time or even full-time job, is to consider starting with your local farmer's markets. This is a great way to test the waters, listen to customer feedback and learn more about what products sell the best! Most markets have a website where you can apply. Otherwise, attend the market and ask to speak to a market manager. Most vendors require you to sell your own handmade products. The majority of farmers' markets will not charge any application fees. There are more games to choose from than ever before, yet, consumers still want even more. It's possible that you can make money designing and selling board games. Having playtesters is going to be a must! You could have your friends and family test your game (and you should get feedback from as many people as possible) however, it's probably a good idea to pay some playtesters to find problems with your game and give you their thoughts. Once your game is ready for production you can sell your design to a production company, or you could produce it yourself. You'll probably make more money self-producing your game! If you're hoping to achieve success as a game designer, take your time to test at least 3 game ideas. Marketing is going to be key! Many board games fail because they aren't marketed well. There are a lot of marketing strategies out there, but you don't need something over the top. A website where you can showcase your games should be able to do the job. You can also consider starting a YouTube channel where you could give overviews of your game, host playthroughs, or even give behind the scenes insights into the design of the game. This could also help you make money to support your games through advertiser revenue. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/support

Sometimes it is about starting over and sometimes it is simply about progressing in your life! Adapting to a new lifestyle will highly depend on your intention of moving abroad and your overall preparation for it! Finding a balance between your work and lifestyle is going to be crucial! One of the things I love the most about opening my company and moving to the US is the beautiful time I now have for myself! Give yourself sufficient time to adjust. Adapting to living overseas should be a gradual process. Don't push yourself too much when you are in the process of adjusting to a new environment. Join various social groups to build a strong network. Volunteering is one of my favorite activities! It is commonly known that exercise can be helpful for your mental health both at home and abroad. Businesses play a vital role in any country's economy. Small to medium-sized businesses alone employ nearly half the working population and account for around 20% of a country's GDP on average. After a conflict, war or natural disaster surviving businesses may benefit from massive external aids, or the disappearance of competition, however, they will suffer profound consequences. There are several reasons why smaller companies with less than 10 employees are able to bounce back more quickly. Flexibility: Being oriented towards local markets makes small businesses less sensitive to disturbances in infrastructure. Their management system is also far simpler, enabling them to adapt more quickly to changes in the market, and to logistical challenges. Financial aids: The businesses that were the least dependent on financial aids prior to any crisis, will bounce back with the most ease. Banks suffering from the effects of the crisis will probably favor older/small clients over other businesses. Sales: Targeting potential customers in your town or region will always pay off more! Local marketing can help you focus in on a specific geographic area that gives more control. Also 85% of business owners depend on word-of-mouth referrals, which shows just how crucial it is to reach customers in your local area. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/support

Historically, clubs have always existed in all countries. Organizations of the sort have existed for many years, as evidenced by Ancient Greek clubs and associations (collegia) in Ancient Rome. It is uncertain whether the use of the word "club" originated in its meaning of a knot of people, or from the fact that the members "clubbed" together to pay the expenses of their gatherings. How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie 1. A person's name is the sweetest and most important sound in any language Remember names and pictures! People's name is the most important thing in the world. Learn how to spell it and pronounce it! Always call people by their full name. Why do we build donor walls for nonprofit? Why do we mention names on memorial walls? The power of being acknowledged and recognized! By using someone's name, they will give you total attention. By using a person's name, you are telling them how important they are to you. It makes them more engaged in the conversation, and also makes you more invested in that person. People are often really proud of their names! Using a person's name is a bridge to making an impact in their life. 2. Become genuinely interested in other people “A man without a smiling face, must not open a shop!” Don't talk, listen to others and focus on them! Ask them questions. Praise a lot! Exclusive focus on the other person. Listen carefully. Encourage others to talk about themselves and talk in terms of the other person's interests. Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely! 3. Talk about your own mistakes first Remember your own shortcomings and mistakes before criticizing another person. Make allowances for the person's age and experience level; you can't expect beginners to perform at the same level as experts. When you must criticize someone, admitting your own mistakes humbly can help the person feel more comfortable and less judged. It shows you are human, too, and make mistakes like anyone else. Offer honest praise as well: "Humility and praise ... rightfully used ... will work veritable miracles in human relations." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/support

All humans are inherently biased. It's part of how our brains are wired. We naturally make snap decisions about people based on things like past experiences, cultural backgrounds, or things we've seen on TV or in the news. Even those of us who pride ourselves on being open-minded fall prey to unconscious bias. Having a bias doesn't make you a bad person, and not every bias is negative or hurtful. It's not recognizing biases that can lead to bad decisions at work, in life, and in relationships in general. Although people have both explicit and implicit biases, the implicit ones are the most concerning because they are the ones we don't recognize we have. Not getting a promotion and not being chosen to be captain of a sports team at school are very similar situations. Indeed, much hasn't changed since childhood. Certain thoughts or perception of ourselves don't automatically disappear in adulthood. Being aware of them is the best way to solve these challenges. Taking responsibility for your life will change things a lot! The most important aspect of taking responsibility for your life is to acknowledge that your life is your responsibility. You are in charge. No matter how hard you try to blame others for the events of your life, each event is the result of choices you made and are making, that includes your attitude and what you choose to keep in your mind as true because of past experiences! Avoid blaming others. It's frustrating when progress stalls or stops. It happens to the best of us. No one is immune. Why combine positive aging and gardening? Because it's time to get our hands dirty again! Gardening promotes psychosocial and physical functioning and therefore enhances the quality of life. Gardening participation provides important occupation and activity engagement. Gardening groups offer a context for social interaction and collaboration, which may be particularly important for socially isolated older adults. Gardening involves planning, planting, watering, and nurturing outdoor ornamental plants, shrubs or fruit plants in a garden, or in pots or containers, but also passive engagement such as wandering through gardens, relaxing in or viewing gardens, and active engagement, such as cultivating plants, mowing lawns, weeding and raking. Lobbying is performed by individuals or groups to pressure governments into policy actions. Lobbying is legally protected and is not the same as bribery. Bribery and lobbying are often conjoined in the public mind. While both seek a favorable outcome, the two remain distinct practices. Bribery is considered an effort to buy power (paying to guarantee a certain result); lobbying is considered an effort to influence power, often by offering contributions. Bribery is illegal, while lobbying is not. Lobbying provides access to government legislators, acts as an educational tool, and allows individual interests to gain power in numbers. Lobbying is an integral part of a modern participatory government and is legally protected. In the U.S., the right to lobby is protected by both the 1st Amendment and the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995,3 and additionally by the inherent need for participation in our democratic environment. All kinds of groups hire lobbyists: from corporations and private companies to nonprofits and unions, to try to persuade the government to pass legislation that's favorable to them. Lobbying is a complex area, and for those who practice it often involves having sound knowledge of politics, business, communication, and law. Nonprofit vs. Not-for Profit vs. For-Profit have different implications for your taxes, corporate governance and business activities. Whether you decided to start a for-profit, not-for-profit or nonprofit, the first steps for creating your entity are the same. Start by filing for a business entity in the state in which you wish to run your operations. Your business entity might be a corporation, LLC, sole proprietorship or partnership. All of these entities can operate as for-profit, nonprofit or not-for-profit organizations. Once the entity has been formed, you will apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) with the IRS. A nonprofit has a tax-exempt status because its mission and purpose are to further a social cause. Nonprofits include hospitals, universities, national charities and foundations. They are required to make their financial and operating information public so that donors can see how their contributions are being used. Nonprofit pays no taxes on any money received through fundraising and donations to a nonprofit are allowed to be deducted from tax return. Similar to a nonprofit, a not-for-profit is one that does not earn profit for its owners. All money goes right back into running the organization. However, not-for-profits are not required to operate for the benefit of the public good. A not-for-profit can simply serve the goals of its members. A good example is a sports club. Not-for-profit must apply for tax-exempt status from the IRS, and money donated to a not-for-profit cannot be deducted on that person's tax return. A for-profit organization operates to make money. Most businesses are for-profits that serve their customers by selling a product or service. The business owner earns an income from the for-profit and may also pay shareholders and investors from the profits. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/support

VALUES Values are not based on information from the past and they are not contextual. Values are universal. Values are principles, or standards of behavior. Love is a good example of value. Our values inform our thoughts, words, and actions. Our values are important because they help us to grow and develop. They help us to create the future we want to experience. You often hear, "your past does not matter, does not define you, and is irrelevant" or "everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new"! Every individual and every organization is involved in making hundreds of decisions every day. Building initial rapport is an ideal topic for your sales training, as it helps both new and existing staff find pockets of connection that opens up the prospect for a productive conversation. 1. You need to be able to demonstrate that you have the answers to their questions and the solution to their problems. And this doesn't just mean value to an organization, but to an individual person. Since you won't always be talking to an organization's decision makers, you need to give your prospects the information they need to be able to make a case to their boss for why they should purchase your products or services. 2. Provide Strategy: When communicating with a prospect, you can't just tell them that you have a solution for their problem. You need to understand their specific needs. If you can draw parallels to existing case studies that have been solved for similar requirements, this will not only let them know what you can do, but also provide evidence that you have experience solving problems like the ones they are looking to address. 3. Understand Their Pain: Most people aren't looking to make change for the sake of making change; they have problems they need to overcome and issues they need to address.
