On this episode of The Healthcare Plus Podcast, Quint Studer welcomes Dr. Thom Mayer to discuss insights from his extensive career in emergency medicine and leadership, including his work with the NFL Players Union and in crisis situations on 9/11 and during war in Ukraine. In their conversation, Dr. Mayer discusses his new book, “Leadership is Worthless, but Leading is Priceless,” emphasizing the distinction between leadership as a noun and the act of leading as a verb. He challenges each individual to realize that they are a leader today no matter the role they serve in and to always ask the question, “How will I lead today?”. Dr. Mayer also highlights the importance of relationship-building, storytelling, and a curiosity-driven approach to innovation in healthcare. He says “there's no solo practice of medicine anywhere. It's a team sport.” Their conversation also explores the idea of clinical trials as a way for organizations to reconsider practices and processes and drive continuous improvement. On the topic of improving patient experience, Dr. Mayer discusses his recent article, “Criterion-Based Measurements of Patient Experience in Health Care: Eliminating Winners and Losers to Create a New Moral Ethos,” published by JAMA. Dr. Mayer and Quint inspire leaders to use failures as steppingstones on their mission to foster cultures of trust and gratitude. Plus, they offer actionable tips and resources to help you do so. Lida Citroën, Boomer, joins us to talk about her new book, The New Rules of Influence – How to Authentically Build Trust, Drive Change, and Make an Impact. Lida is a keynote speaker, author and executive coach empowering global executives, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders to manage how they're perceived and drive them towards ideal opportunities. She has helped thousands of individuals gain a fresh perspective on crafting a personal narrative that tells the right story to the right people about who they are. Her personal mission isn't just about perception—it's about profound transformation, guiding others to leave an indelible mark on the tapestry of human achievement. Topics covered in the Episode: We matter Executive Presence and Influence Groups of Rules (why, who, how, where) Misalignment of values Brand and Influence Influencers & Social Media Here are three takeaways from the episode: 1. Executive presence is about: Gravitas but that can't be well-defined, Image which is about how to dress the part, and Communication that are usually scripted messages. That doesn't necessarily lead to influence which is not manipulation or persuasion. This is why we need new rules. 2. Lida divides the 10 rules into 4 groups. Courage is our “Why” and it's about being real. Credibility means being clear what we stand for. “Who” is now global and includes rules of being of service and inclusive. “How” is not about perfection but being consistent and that builds trust. “Where” is about visibility. 3. Misalignment of our values can be part of the journey and gets us to where we are (Rule 3) We've all experienced this and we learn from them.

Melissa writes both intimately and conversationally about topics that many moms around the world can relate to (some dads too). She invites the reader into a personal and deep journey about topics that are crucially important to uncover what would make a mom truly happy to work on...even after the kids are in bed. Coming out of this period, sluggish yet motivated, so many of us can use this book to help us wake up! If you're looking to refresh, reenergize, and yes, reimagine a better version of your life, this book is for you. I loved the hilarious, yet poignant stories about motherhood today and the window into the world of those who've gone for it – and did it. - Macollvie Neel, Brooklyn, NY “The words: imagination, play and fun are not the usual things we as mothers think of when wondering how to get a grip back on our career and I believe it provides a really fresh take and lots of food for thought for mothers reading it. Its tone is so energetic and fresh!” – Alejandra Molina, Coach, Miami, Florida “Melissa is a mom of three with big dreams who tells it like it is. She draws on her own experiences and the experiences of professionals she's interviewed for her podcast to reflect on the plight of the mother. How do women conform to or challenge the traditional “mom script”? If you're a mom, what can you do to break the “cultural glass ceiling” to be yourself and a great parent, all without having to force yourself into a mom mold that doesn't fit you? Melissa is like a great friend, honest and wise and funny, telling you about her life and asking you to reflect on yours. This book is a great purchase for moms in every stage of life.” – Maureen Turner Carey, Librarian, Austin, Texas “In her book, Melissa shows us that motherhood does not have to be a pause or an end to your pre-child self. With guidance from her podcast guests, she encourages us to think big, find what lights us up, think big, and move towards our goals with the steps that fit the reality of our lives as they are today. In doing so we honor and inspire our child(ren), and our own inner child.” – Katherine Dzierzynski, Museum Group Sales, Forest Hills, NY
In this interview, we talk with Executive Coaches, Jeff Nally and Kimcee McAnally who are the authors of an article in our March issue “Journey to Excellence” entitled: Coaching Supervision in Organizations ~ A game-changer to improve the impact of coaching. The thought of working with an experienced coach to support leaders is a well-accepted practice across corporations and industries around the world. Leaders readily engage with coaches during leadership transitions, challenging situations, and to enhance their own skills as leaders in their organizations. But who takes care of and develops the coach? Often times, coaches are independent and run their own business, fending for themselves when it comes to their own self-care and personal development. Coaching supervision is a well-established practice in many parts of the world to support the coaches themselves as they coach organizational leaders. The purpose of coaching supervision is to enable coaches to introspectively look at themselves, how they coach, and about their professional health as a coach. As a result, coaches are better able to develop and enhance their own skills so they can better support the leaders and organizations. According to a 2021 publication, “The role of the supervisor is that of a supporter… in the professional development journey and not that of an assessor” (Hemmer et al.)In this podcast, we will discuss supervision – how it works, the benefits, and how to incorporate coaching supervision for yourself as a coach, or in an organization.Dr. Kimcee McAnally is an accredited Coach Supervisor and Partner at CoachSource. Her background includes extensive executive level business experience; academic qualifications (Ph.D. & M.S. in Organizational Psychology, B.S. in Psychology); coaching certification (EMCC European Individual Accreditation/EIA Senior Practitioner), and accredited Coach Supervisor (EMCC ESIA European Supervision Individual Accreditation). Kimcee is passionate about coaching and supervision and contributes to the industry through research, publications, and conference presentations. Kimcee co-authored the book, "Executive Coaching for Results: the Definitive Guide for Developing Organizational Leaders," published by Berrett-Koehler and recent chapters in “Innovations in Leadership Coaching” and “Coaching Supervision: Voices from the Americas.Jeff Nally is an executive coach, coaching supervisor, and professional speaker inspiring leaders and coaches through the neuroscience of human interaction. Her expertise in building radical products has led her to advise a broad range of organizations from high-tech startups to government agencies in industries such as broadcast, media and entertainment, telecom, advertising technology, government, consumer apps, robotics, and even wine. Radhika is an advisor on product thinking to the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the country's central bank and financial regulator. She earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Radhika speaks nine languages fluently, underscoring her talent for bridging cultural divides and fostering collaboration across global teams. Today, Radhika joins me to discuss her book Radical Product Thinking: The New Mindset for Innovating Smarter and how you can apply the principles of her work to your own company. She shares the process she followed to develop the Radical Product Thinking framework and how that discovery led her to write a book. She diagnoses some common product diseases plaguing companies today and reveals how emphasizing culture can help you innovate. She describes the tools that teams use to successfully innovate and what leaders can learn from Steve Jobs. Radhika also offers advice to company leaders on shifting their company's culture and mindset and adopting a vision-driven product mindset. “Traditionally, we've always thought about product as a physical or digital thing. Unless you are writing a book with a co-author or ghostwriter, it probably feels like a very lonely task. But what if you could find a fellowship that provided encouragement and advice? Our guest today is Jeremy Madsen, Operations Manager for BK Authors an author group affiliated with the award–winning publisher Berrett-Koehler. This group helps authors and publishers bridge the gap to bring better books to market. Jeremy starts by helping us understand what an author's group is all about. He explains that these communities, especially when supported by a publisher, can give authors a better awareness of the market and industry. In addition, mentoring is a sharing process that works best when all sides open up. Authors further down the path share advice from experience, while newer authors share information about new skills and tools that didn't exist five years ago. Finally, we discuss the timeline of publishers versus authors. Publishers have limited resources, and need to move on to the next project as soon as possible, meaning they are by your side for mere months. The author's timeline should be further-reaching, amortizing the investment over 5 – 7 years. Plus Jeremy shares the growing trend of publishers investing into a backlist of older titles, giving non-fiction books an even greater chance to see success over a longer course of years. Jeremy is deeply involved in both the writing and publishing community and brings unique insights in this episode that few others can provide. Three Key Takeaways: * Being part of an author community can be big morale booster to not be alone on the journey. * Don't be afraid to reach out to established authors who have published books in your area of expertise. You'd be surprised how generous many will be with their time and advice. * A publication date has no bearing on the importance or usefulness of a book. It is a date of reference, not an expiration.
Today I talked to David Livermore about his book Digital, Diverse & Divided: How to Talk to Racists, Compete with Robots, and Overcome Polarization (Berrett-Koehler, 2022). While the author argues that cultural intelligence (CQ) begins where EQ leaves off, in truth key attributes of EQ like understanding another person's motivations and figuring out how to address them matter in both cases. Nowadays the challenge of connecting well only becomes harder, of course, given how social media means we often occupy echo chambers that merely reinforce what we already know and believe, as opposed to achieving a better understanding of how a person from a different place, or of a different race, gender, faith or political persuasion might see the matter at hand. This episode delves into how organizations must live up to their espoused values, plus instances where that fails to happen and what the corrective steps might be. David Livermore is the president and cofounder of the Cultural Intelligence Center in East Lansing, Michigan, and a research fellow at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He's held a variety of leadership positions in nonprofit organizations around the world and taught at numerous universities in addition to being a speaker and advisor to Fortune 500 companies and governments in over 100 countries. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of ten books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. (https://www.sensorylogic.com). His newest book is Emotionomics 2.0: The Emotional Dynamics Underlying Key Business Goals. I recently caught up with the very busy David Erlichman, co-founder and coordinator of the Converge network (www.converge.net), about his fantastic book Impact Networks: Creating Connection, Sparking Collaboration, and Catalyzing Systemic Change (Berrett-Koehler, 2021). Solving complex problems like climate change or homelessness demands intense collaboration between diverse organizations and individuals. In his book, David argues that a network approach combines the strategic rigor and agility of modern organizations with the deep connection and shared purpose of communities. Drawing on his experience working with over fifty impact networks over the past decade, David describes how to cultivate a network mentality. He then goes deeply into the five Cs of creating impact networks: * clarify purpose and principles * convene the people * cultivate trust * coordinate actions * collaborate for systems change. Given the increasing urgency of the issues we face, impact networks have never been more essential. What I love about this book—and what I enjoyed so much about our conversation—is the opportunity for exploring the potential of human networks (and networks of networks!) to bring about significant systemic change. On the relationship between systems and networks, David writes that "the networks that underlie systems—organizational, social, planetary—have a huge influence on how healthy and effective these systems are". I enjoyed getting to ask David about his thoughts on network leadership—and what it means for this work to be grounded in the wisdom of living systems. Throughout this rich and highly useful book, David points to some valuable resources within the Converge Network Toolkit. I've checked them out and suggest you do too! You can find them here. Would you ever throw a dinner party and not even think about guest allergies, or how to make your guests feel most comfortable? Of course not! You would prepare. If only we approached language the way we approach hosting a party! Often on autopilot, we don't stop and think about the words we use and if they are inclusive or if they're damaging them in some unseen way. Words matter and we unintentionally could be hurting others or making them feel unseen by the language we use. This not only harms our relationships, it can lead to low-performing teams, high turnover, or lack of collaboration and innovation.Today, I have a great conversation with Dr. Suzanne Wertheim, a national expert on language and bias. Suzanne shares the fascinating story of how she got into linguistic anthropology and how it led to her current work. She attempts to define inclusive language, and why it's more than just being politically correct: it's vital to collaborative success and belonging. We talk about the perspective shifts required and why The Golden Rule doesn't go far enough. And we discuss good outcomes of inclusive language and bad outcomes when you choose to ignore it. Suzanne also shares some quick tips to get you started and unpacks the principles of inclusive language. Key Takeaways:Language changes based on social context, particularly among minority groups.Inclusive language is more than just a list of words you can or cannot say. The impact of the words changes as society changes and it is not a stagnant list.Perspective taking is a cognitive skill - the first part is a role shift, the second is taking into account the different perspective that's brought to the situation, because of the other person's different lived experience. The word "professionalism" is often used in a very non-inclusive way to gatekeep people who are just showing up, are very competent, and are delivering high quality things on time. "We know that we have to practice foreign languages to become fluent. So too with inclusive language: you can't expect to just get it right away. You have to practice and make mistakes." — Dr. Suzanne Wertheim About Dr. Suzanne Wertheim, Language and Bias Expert:Dr. Suzanne Wertheim is a national expert on language and bias. After getting her Ph.D. in Linguistics from Berkeley, she held faculty positions at Northwestern, University of Maryland, and UCLA. In 2011, she left the university system in order to apply her expertise to real-world problems. As head of Worthwhile Research & Consulting, Dr. Wertheim specializes in analyzing and mitigating bias at work. Using the tools of linguistic anthropology, she guides clients to more inclusive language, content, and workplaces. Dr. Wertheim's book, Let's Talk Inclusive Language, will be published by Berrett-Koehler in 2023. Today I talked to Minal Bopaiah about her new book Equity: How to Design Organizations Where Everyone Thrives (Berrett-Koehler, 2021). Remember the Marlboro Man? Of course you do, as he symbolizes the myth of rugged individualism. Minal Bopaiah is here to suggest that the idea of the “making it on your own” is and has always been a myth. There's always a social context, which favors one group more than another. It's not that individual efforts aren't valid; it's just that the story is always more complicated, and there are those in positions of power eager to camouflage the degree to which the “game” is tilted by factors involving gender, race, and other factors. Many aspects of this book and discussion are unique when it comes to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). This episode explores the world of non-profits, where “doing good” has aspects to it that should welcome reform. At the same time, how about the 19% of the population that have a disability? In the second edition of her book, The Sisters Are Alright: Changing the Broken Narrative of Black Women in America (Berrett-Koehler, 2021), Tamara Winfrey Harris interviews over 100 diverse Black women about marriage, motherhood, health, sexuality, beauty, and more. Winfrey Harris examines the Mammy, Sapphire, and Jezebel stereotypes that persist in American popular media and culture. Winfrey Harris explores the evolution of stereotypes of Black women, with new real-life examples, such as the rise of blackfishing and digital blackface (which help white women rise to fame) and the media's continued fascination with Black women's sexuality (as with Cardi B or Megan Thee Stallion). The second edition includes a new chapter on Black women and power that explores how persistent stereotypes challenge Black women's recent leadership and achievements in activism, community organizing, and politics. The chapter includes interviews with activists and civic leaders and interrogates media coverage and perceptions of Stacey Abrams, Vice President Kamala Harris, and others. Winfrey Harris exposes anti–Black woman propaganda and shows how real Black women are pushing back against racist, distorted cartoon versions of themselves. She counters warped prejudices with the straight-up truth about being a Black woman in America. Rebekah Buchanan is an Associate Professor of English and Director of English Education at Western Illinois University. Her research focuses on feminism, activism, and literacy practices in youth culture, specifically through zines and music. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Today I talked to Thom Hartmann about his new book The Hidden History of American Healthcare: Why Sickness Bankrupts You and Makes Others Insanely Rich (Berrett-Koehler, 2021). To hear Thom Hartmann tell it, the battle over whether healthcare should be seen as a right or a privilege has two phases in American history. From the 1880's to the 1980's the idea of universal American healthcare was opposed due to racist bias, i.e., to provide it would favor aiding African-Americans, too. Then from the Reagan Revolution to today, greed has taken over because the current system favors industry insiders benefitting while the average American pays more for less than is true elsewhere in the so-called Developed World. Get ready for plenty of surprises here, starting with the fact that the debate about healthcare got launched by three Germans: Karl Marx, Otto von Bismarck, and a person named Frederick Ludwig Hoffman. Never heard of the third guy? Well, at a time when Prudential Insurance was the biggest player in its sector Hoffman provided the platform for denying the healthcare that Bismarck had decided was a way to counter the appeal of Marxism. Thom Hartmann is a four-time winner of the Project Censored Award, a New York Times bestselling authority of 32 books, and America's #1 progressive talk radio show host. Today I talked to April Rinne about her new book Flux: 8 Superpowers for Thriving in Constant Change (Berrett-Koehler, 2021) What's your relationship to change? Do you embrace it, filled with hope for the future? Or are you somebody who's more cautious, even worried about what change might portend? In this episode, April Rinne offers advice based on her 8 rules for navigating change more adroitly. Part of her advice has to do with slowing down, setting a sustainable pace to avoid burnout in ever more demanding careers. But there's more. How may higher education change, including MBA programs, in a world where more of more of us will be part of the Gig Economy? And within companies, how can leaders create trust when inequality in pay between executives and rank-and-files members threaten even the possibility of a “we” identity? Listen in for Rinne's unique perspective. April Rinne is one of the 50 leading female futurists in the world, a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum and a Fulbright Scholar. She's also traveled to over 100 countries as part of having a front-row seat to a world in flux. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of nine books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. Today I talked to Adam Kahane about his new book Facilitating Breakthrough: How to Remove Obstacles, Bridge Differences, and Move Forward Together (Berrett-Koehler, 2021). You're helping South Africa make the transition from apartheid to democracy under Nelson Mandela. You're helping end a half-century civil war in Columbia. You're working with the First Nations in Canada. That's a small part of the scope that Adam Kahane has been involved in over the recent decades. It's meaningful, enlightened work that recognizes that the two typical modes of reaching “agreements” don't yield optimal results. The vertical approach leads to rigidity and domination by ultimately shutting down dissent. The collegial, horizontal approach can lead to fragmentation and gridlock. What's the new, third way forward? For Kahane, that means doing what Martin Luther King, Jr. did and looking for inspiration in the work of the German existential theologian Paul Tillich. Love offers unity, power the opportunity for self-realization, and justice looks to ensure that power bring equity for all. If ever you've had to work out disagreements to resolve a conflict, this episode is for you. Adam Kahane is the director of Reos Partners, an international social enterprise that helps people move forward together on their most important and intractable issues. Today I talked to Maya Hu-Chan about her new book Saving Face: How to Preserve Dignity and Build Trust (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, 2020) There are so many sayings that involve the face, but perhaps none is more central to at least Asian culture than “saving face.” That's because it represents retaining one's dignity versus being embarrassed or humiliated in front of others. In truth, though, everyone wants nothing more than to be appreciated, as the psychologist William James recognized long ago. In this episode, Maya Hu-Chan puts “faces” into a business context for listeners. In a meeting between Western versus Eastern executives, for instance, how will a long silence be handled? Odds are usually that it's the Americans who will jump in first, breaking the silence. Given more than 20 years of international business experience, Hu-Chan takes listeners through why regional, company and individual personality differences matter so much. Are you a high-context or low-context person? It's time to find out by taking in this episode that involves the platinum rule, i.e., treating others they way they wanted to be treated. Maya Hu-Chan is the founder and president of Global Leadership Associates and the co-author of Global Leadership: The Next Generation. She's trained and coached leaders from Fortune 500 companies to non-profits around the world. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of nine books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. (https://www.sensorylogic.com). Today I talked to Eileen McDargh about her new book Burnout to Breakthrough: Building Resilience to Refuel, Recharge, and Reclaim What Matters (Berrett-Koehler, 2020). What's another way to frame both living-in-the-moment and respecting colleagues at work: seeing them as human beings as opposed to merely humans doing. That's but one indication of the energy Eileen brings to this episode. The emphasis here is on shifting from a sense of being without resources – mental, physical, emotional, and otherwise—to finding energy through refocusing on what matters most right then. People need a sense of connectivity to ward off loneliness, and to take stock of their situation without devolving into what Eileen calls “red-ant thinking”: looking for what's wrong. As Eileen notes, it might sound trivial to take five minutes per staff member in an introductory meeting to share something about yourself, visually. But doing so builds togetherness that will later empower results. To try to stay in your head all the time simply isn't sustainable, nor productive. Eileen McDargh is the CEO (Chief Energy Officer) at the Resiliency Group. In 2019, Global Gurus International ranked her first among the World's Top 30 Communication Professionals. She's also been elected into the CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame, placing her among the top 3% of speakers in America. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of nine books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. Is your organization suffering from “pivotitis”? While pivoting in itself is not bad, pivoting without a clear vision in mind can be unproductive and can result in a product that lacks function or impact (or both). In this episode of Innovation Storytellers, Radhika Dutt, Co-Founder of Radical Product Thinking, joins us to talk about what ‘radical product thinking' means and how we can apply this kind of agile method in product development to our own products and services. She also gives us some advice on how to know when you need to pivot, creating product iterations with a purpose, and tapping into early adopters for your product or service. Radhika Dutt is currently Advisor on Product Thinking to the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Singapore's financial regulator and central bank. She serves on the board of the independent publisher, Berrett Koehler, and the Association of Product Professionals. She also teaches entrepreneurship and innovation at Northeastern's D'Amore McKim School of Business. Radhika co-founded Radical Product Thinking as a movement of leaders creating vision-driven change and is a frequent speaker at business events and conferences around the world. Radhika is also the author of the upcoming book Radical Product Thinking: The New Mindset for Innovating Smarter. She is an entrepreneur and product leader who has participated in four acquisitions, two of which were companies that she founded. She advises organizations from high-tech startups to government agencies on building radical products that create a fundamental change.

How do Marines - how do leaders of all kinds - make the right decisions in technology-enhanced warfare? Historically, people were trained on how to reliably react in highly predictable and reoccurring conditions. However, in the Digital Age, the past will no longer be a good predictor of the future. Technology will have the ability to continuously create new ways of doing – reacting at a speed faster than humans can normally react. So, how will you train leaders and Marines to react quickly and correctly in continuous changing environments enabled by technology? How does an individual train him or herself to be highly adaptable real-time so she or he can process incoming stimuli quickly and correctly without “bias”? What state of “being” do people need to be in to excel in such environments? This brings us to Hyper-Learning. Why Hyper-Learning? The past will no longer be a reliable predictor of the future because of the pace of technological change & its impact. Human Agility & adaptation will become strategic imperatives. Human cognitive, behavioral & emotional excellence will be key. Hyper-learning is high-quality, continual, fast learning, and will be necessary to keep pace with the speed of change and to successfully explore the unknown, adapt continually, and upgrade our internal cognitive operating system—our mental models. Learn – Unlearn – Relearn @ the speed of change. Edward D. When the “New North America” was established, it was clear that black people were not human or equal to white people, even after the civil rights movement. Consequently the architects of society had a non-inclusive cultural standard to adhere to when developing our society. This is where bias comes in. When power and bais marry, they produce systemic racism. All of the systems of our society were built by white men. Our criminal justice system, employment system, housing system, health care system, political system, education system, etc... Even well intentioned folks have built systems that exclude the interest of all that weren't granted a seat at the table. The side effect being all of the infamous ISMs and phobias. Institutional racism, also known as systemic racism, is a form of racism that is embedded as normal practice within society or an organization. It can lead to such issues as discrimination in criminal justice, employment, housing, health care, political power, and education, among other issues. We are currently experiencing another moment, where the issues of race and injustices are visible enough for everyone to pay attention. The key being everyone. People of color experience it every day. While not all are a visible and clear as the murder of George Floyd, they show up in a way that steals peace and joy from not only those who experience racial acts directly but all of us. Our guest today is a wonderful and accomplished human being and he is also a gentleman. Howard Ross, is the author of ReInventing Diversity: Transforming Organizational Community to Strengthen People, Purpose and Performance, (published by Rowman and Littlefield in conjunction with SHRM in 2011), and the Washington Post best seller, Everyday Bias: Identifying and Navigating Unconscious Judgments in Our Daily Lives, (published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2014). His latest book, Our Search for Belonging: How Our Need to Connect is Tearing Us Apart, was released by Berrett-Koehler in May of 2018. On this episode of The Delicious Truth, Howard helps us understand the real danger in bias and how we can recognize it, own and manage it. You don't want to miss this. Special Guest: Howard Ross.

What lies beneath stunning statics like, only 36% of business professional believe their companies foster an inclusive culture, and only one-third of workers believe their opinions count; whereas, 50% of workers report being treated rudely at work at least once a week.
