Picture this: it's late at night, the kids are asleep, and you find yourself reaching for those irresistible cookies while pondering why you never wear headphones. This episode kicks off with such mischievous moments before we dive headlong into the fascinating history of the US dollar's detachment from the gold standard in 1971, and why cash might feel a little less jingly in your pocket these days. We then tackle the sports world, light-heartedly debating whether Tom Brady's mega-net-worth warrants his frequent appearances in advertisements, and how we find ourselves throwing around terms like hat tricks, turkeys, and three-peats in everyday conversation. Switching lanes, our discussion turns to the roaring engines of luxury cars and the rugged allure of trucks like the Ford F-250. We revel in the practical versus the posh, exploring how our choices on the road reflect our lifestyles and aspirations. Music lovers will find resonance as we navigate the evolving soundscape, from Morgan Wallen's country charm to the groundbreaking rhythms of Kendrick Lamar and Tyler the Creator. Alongside, we muse over the changing musical landscape and our personal taste shifts, raising questions about whether it's the artists or we who have evolved. As the conversation broadens, we reflect on the intricacies of immigration policies, sharing personal anecdotes and insights into the challenges faced by those in pursuit of the American Dream. From the rocky terrain of geopolitical conflicts to the serene greens of a golf course, we traverse a multitude of engaging topics. And just when you think we've covered it all, we discuss home renovations, the prospect of building a golf simulator, and the legalities of home defense. Join us on this eclectic journey, where humor, history, and heartfelt stories blend seamlessly to create a podcast episode that's as diverse as it is dynamic.

In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we sit down with Chance Jennings from Tittle Brothers Construction. We kick things off by discussing a major highlight for Tittle Brothers: being an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, a prestigious designation held by only about 15 companies nationwide. This certification ensures homeowners' warranties are backed by Owens Corning, even if anything happens to the original contractor.Chance shares a bit about his personal life, including the excitement of expecting his second child in October and the joys of parenting his four-year-old daughter. We also learn about his passion project—visiting all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums. So far, he's visited three parks and hopes to squeeze in more trips before the new baby arrives. We move into Chance's role as the Marketing Manager for Tittle Brothers, where he's been for five years. He tells us about the variety of services Tittle Brothers offers, including roofing, siding, gutters, masonry, additions, decks, and overhangs. Roofing projects can usually be completed within a day, while more extensive work like additions or bathrooms takes longer. Currently, roofing projects are scheduled about two weeks out, siding about two to three months, and bathrooms are booked through the end of the year.We highlight the value Tittle Brothers brings to homeowners, especially with their financing options, which make large repairs more accessible without heavy upfront costs. Chance explains how their referral program can even help offset loan payments. He also stresses that waiting for home improvement costs to drop is rarely a winning strategy, especially in the post-COVID economy where prices tend to only climb.Tittle Brothers has expanded with a second location in Berkley, Michigan, complementing their Brownstown office. He shares current promotions like 50% off roofing labor and $2,000 off full siding or window jobs. Their service area extends about two hours from each office, covering a large portion of Michigan. We also hear about this Ohio-native's love for Coney Island breakfast. It's clear he's embraced Michigan culture wholeheartedly. As Chance juggles work, family, and his ballpark quest, his commitment to quality construction and community shines through.More: Tittle Brothers Construction: https://tittlebrothers.com Learn more about the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce: https://www.royaloakchamber.com/Connect with our hosts:Jon Gay from JAG in Detroit Podcasts - http://www.jagindetroit.com/Lisa Bibbee from Century 21 Northland - http://soldbylisab.com/

When I first discovered Ros Byam Shaw's writing, I felt like I'd found someone who truly saw homes the way I did — not as stage sets or style statements, but as deeply personal spaces layered with time, memory, and quiet beauty. In this episode, I get to speak with Ros Byam Shaw about her work as a writer and her newest book, “ Perfect English, Small and Beautiful”, her longtime collaboration with photographer Jan Baldwin, and what she's learned from years of stepping inside some of the most thoughtful homes in Britain. We talk about the charm of unshowy interiors, why rooms don't need to shout to be compelling, and how trends often miss the point. Ros shares stories from her time at World of Interiors, what makes a home feel lived-in and loved, and why it's perfectly fine — even wonderful — not to have a “celebrity home.”This conversation felt like a deep exhale. I hope it reminds you, as it reminded me, that personal style isn't about impressing anyone — it's about making a space that feels like you. Want to finally define your style? Hello! This is Episode 352, and in it, I’m talking with HOME Method member, Ben. He and his partner, Mike, are designing the renovation and extension of their Melbourne Californian Bungalow. In this episode, you’ll hear how Ben and Mike came up with their renovation and extension design, and some of the challenges they had along the way. They followed a more traditional route of tendering the design, only to discover that the cost to deliver exceeded their budget, which meant they had two choices. [For all resources mentioned in this podcast and a free, downloadable PDF transcript, head to www.undercoverarchitect.com/352] One: revisit and amend the existing design to see if they can pull it back financially, without compromising the functionality and livability of the home overall. Or two: take some steps back - or as we call it in HOME Method, get up to helicopter view, and assess whether there is a different design option altogether that can satisfy the brief, and meet the budget expectations more closely. Many reach this point in their project, and it is always a challenging decision to make. If you’ve already sunk money and time into a design outcome that isn’t exactly what you asked for or thought you’d have, should you just keep going? Or do you risk halting the project, and also contending with potential construction cost increases in the interim whilst you change the design, so you can scale back what you’re doing, and create a design outcome that’s more efficient, more in alignment with your brief, and also benefits from all the learnings you’ve had in the experience so far? Well: Spoiler Alert! You’ll hear in this episode that Ben and Mike chose to renew their design. And you’ll also hear how they started first with a feasibility study of two options, and then were able to proceed much more confidently on that basis. And interestingly, VERY speedily as well … so much so, that in the end, they’ve not really ‘lost’ much time at all. And as a result of their pivot, they’ve ended up with a design that: aligns far more significantly with their ideal lifestyle is able to be delivered within their means Isn’t as disruptive to the structure and layout of the existing home and they’ve developed a toolset, skillset and mindset that’s elevated their agency in their project as well. Remember, if you’d like to grab a full transcript of this episode, you can find all of that by heading to www.undercoverarchitect.com/352. Now, let’s dive in! In this episode of True Tales From Old Houses, Stacy Grinsfelder and Daniel Kanter are back with fresh updates, big plans, and a tangent or two. First, Daniel gives an update on his ongoing duplex renovation, including the latest challenges and progress in the basement and foundation work—because structural integrity is kind of a big deal. Meanwhile, Stacy updates everyone on her staircase restoration—and while she insists she's not a perfectionist, well… let's just say the results suggest otherwise. But it's not all sanding and structural repairs! Stacy and Daniel are gearing up for an architectural pilgrimage to Scottsdale, Arizona, where they'll visit Taliesin West, soak up some Frank Lloyd Wright inspiration, and record new podcast episodes on location. You're invited! (more details soon) Finally, because every True Tales From Old Houses episode comes with an unexpected side quest, the conversation somehow veers into skiing—because the only thing more terrifying than structural issues is flying downhill at 40 mph on purpose. Home renovations can substantially increase your equity and cash flow on a rental property, but when doing one, there are two key things you need to pay attention to: budgets and timelines. Today, rookie real estate investor Rene Hosman is back to teach you how to do both after just finishing a three-month, $36,000 rental renovation where she turned an outdated apartment into a cash-flowing condo! Rene was able to rehab the entire unit (two bedrooms, one bathroom) with a budget of around $30,000, and although she may have gone slightly over, her returns look nothing less than phenomenal. How did she do everything—new floors, electrical, bathroom, AND furnishings—with such a reasonable budget? If you're ready to renovate your home or rental property, take her tips. Rene goes through every aspect of the project: the good (renting it out right after finishing) and the bad (a BIG flood in the master bedroom), plus everything in between. She'll share what she chose to DIY, what was smarter to hire out, and how she paid for it all. We also get the final numbers of the renovation—what the property appraised for AND how much it's renting for now! In This Episode We Cover: How to stay on budget and on timeline when doing your next home renovation Unexpected costs that led to thousands of more dollars in renovation expenses Whether you should buy the materials or let your workers buy them instead (cost-saving tip!) Furnishing your rental property for cheap and where Rene finds low-cost, quality furniture How to negotiate with your bank so you can get a LOWER interest rate when you refinance How much cash flow Rene will make off of this small (but mighty) medium-term rental And So Much More!
