Hiring a contractor isn't as easy as scrolling through your dating app and swiping right—trust me, I learned that the hard way! In this wild ride of an episode, we're joined by Joseph Brinkman, an attorney who shines a light on the chaotic world of contractor hiring and real estate law. We dig into everything from dodging liability like it's a bad ex to deciphering contracts that are about as clear as mud. Spoiler alert: if you think you can just grab the cheapest guy off Craigslist and everything will magically go smoothly, then buckle up, because we're about to expose the absurdity of that idea. So, grab your coffee, settle in, and let's navigate this construction minefield together!Ever thought hiring a contractor was as easy as picking a pizza topping? Well, buckle up, because Eric G, John Dudley, and attorney Joseph Brinkman are about to take you on a wild ride through the chaotic world of contractor hiring and real estate law. They dive into the nitty-gritty of why you shouldn't just swipe right on the first contractor you see on Craigslist. Spoiler alert: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. From understanding liability (you might be responsible if they fall off a ladder) to deciphering contracts that are murkier than that lake you swim in, this episode is here to shed light on the often absurd realities of home improvement projects. They discuss how to vet contractors properly, the importance of communicating expectations, and why a solid contract is your best friend when things take a turn for the worse.Joseph Brinkman shares his wisdom on navigating the legal labyrinth of hiring contractors, emphasizing the importance of doing your homework. The guys share stories that will make your jaw drop—like the time a homeowner had to call the cops because of a contractor dispute that escalated to fisticuffs! They stress the importance of having clear communication and a vibe check before you sign any dotted line, because, believe me, no one wants to end up in a legal battle over a bathroom remodel. This episode is packed with practical advice, sharp humor, and a lot of laughs as they navigate the often ridiculous world of home renovations. So grab your coffee, sit back, and prepare to learn about the dos and don'ts of hiring contractors—because let's be real, you're gonna need it!Takeaways: Hiring a contractor isn't as easy as swiping right on a dating app; it's a full-on relationship with all the complications. If you think hiring a contractor who offers the lowest bid is a good idea, just remember: you get what you pay for, and sometimes that means chaos. Navigating contracts in real estate can feel like deciphering your ex's mixed signals; if you're not careful, you might end up in a mess. Always do your due diligence before hiring; checking references and past work can save you from a nightmare scenario later on. Communication is key; make sure to vibe check your contractor to avoid future misunderstandings that could lead to literal fistfights. A contract is like a prenup for your home project—make sure it outlines everything clearly, including what happens if things go sideways. This week I went to town renovating a section of my house. But, like all home renovations it spread from one section of the house to the next. Being a big believer in the theory of Feng Shui I used that to redo this room. But, not only did I redo the room, I uncovered old shame, fear, embarrassment that lived in this room that desperately needed a redo.Sometimes renovating your house isn't just about your house. It's about the person who lives inside of it. I dive deep into what changes I saw while renovating and how you can find your own change.Support the showFind Us: https://www.jackiebrubaker.com/ https://loveyouevenmore.com/ https://www.instagram.com/jacquelinebrubaker/

Not all contractors are created equal—and when it comes to your home, cutting corners can cost you big. In this episode, we're digging into why hiring licensed tradespeople isn't just smart—it's essential. What would happen to your business if you had to step away for two months? No Instagram. No ads. No blogging. Would it survive—or would it crumble? This summer, I put my business to the ultimate test. With my home renovation spiraling into chaos and my mental bandwidth at zero, I had no choice but to step back. And yet, my business didn't just survive—it thrived. In July alone, I booked $49,300 in weddings without showing up online. In this episode, I'm sharing:A raw, behind-the-scenes story of one of the hardest seasons of my life. The 3 things I did to rebound, and get my "successful" groove back. The exact system that kept my business running—and how it can work for you, too.If you've ever wondered how to build a business that supports you, even when life feels impossible, this episode is for you.
Some renovators have discovered one-in-a-million items they never knew were there. And some of them are truly shocking! Looking back, my kitchen has gone through many lives. It started with painted cabinets and bamboo floors on a tight budget, then evolved through a moody green phase during COVID before finally landing on a navy-and-white look inspired by the sea. Along the way, we tiled to the ceiling, swapped in a gorgeous Bertazzoni stove, shiplapped the ceiling, and added furniture pieces to make it feel warm and lived-in rather than purely functional. Each change taught me something about color, materials, and the value of taking time to figure out what really works. With my renovation journey behind me, I sit down with Barbara Ballinger and Margaret Crane, authors of Kitchen Conversations, to talk about what really goes into creating a kitchen that works for you. We cover the basics like layout, storage, and lighting, and why planning for how you actually use the space matters more than following trends. Barbara and Margaret share practical tips on where to save, when to splurge, and how to avoid common renovation mistakes. We also discuss making design choices that last, adding personality to your kitchen, and how to approach the entire process without rushing it. Want to finally define your style? SHOW NOTES: Hello and welcome back to the Money Pit Home Improvement Show! I'm Leslie Segrete, joined by my amazing partner-in-crime, Jim Kenzie. We've got a fantastic hour packed with valuable insights and solutions for your home improvement woes, from floorboards to shingles, inside and out. It's been quite the summer here at the Segrete household, with unexpected repairs, so we know exactly what it's like to navigate your own "money pit" moments. Here's a recap of the main themes and calls for this hour: - Optimizing Outdoor Living & Landscaping: We delve into smart maintenance tips for your in-ground sprinkler system to conserve water and keep your lawn healthy. We also introduce the innovative Ladera stackable stone system for easy outdoor upgrades like fire pits and garden beds, eliminating the need for traditional stonework. - Navigating Home Renovation Costs: We discuss how recent tariffs on lumber, appliances, and fixtures are impacting renovation budgets, sharing crucial tips for smart homeowners to protect their bottom line. - Boosting Home Value & ROI: We reveal the top home improvement projects that offer the best return on investment, helping you prioritize where to spend your renovation dollars. Q & A: - Dave from Maryland discovered his new roof was installed directly over significantly rotted roof rafters, causing the section to sag and leak. We advise him to pay only a partial amount of the bill, formally disputing the quality of the incomplete work in writing. - Courtney in Texas is struggling with a persistent cigarette odor in her home despite extensive renovations. When carpet was replaced, the plywood subfloor should have been sealed with a primer/sealer, and we suggest upgrading her HVAC system to effectively scrub residual odors from the air. - Frankie called about her old, gray kitchen countertop that she wants to replace or paint. We recommend DIY countertop finishing kits from Daich Coatings for a durable and attractive restoration. - Rick from Illinois is seeking a reputable company to install solar panels on his large lot. We caution him to conduct thorough research on all available government incentives and to carefully vet any solar companies to avoid rushing into a significant long-term investment. - Tony emailed about an elaborate method he devised using a shop vac to remove calcium deposits from his water heater's bottom element. His method was unnecessary and could be risky. The water heater's internal drain valve is designed for this task, requiring only a garden hose to flush out the deposits.
