Welcome to Episode 250 of Lucretius Today. This is a podcast dedicated to the poet Lucretius, who wrote "On The Nature of Things," the most complete presentation of Epicurean philosophy left to us from the ancient world.  Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where we have a thread to discuss this and all of our podcast episodes.  Today we are continuing to review Cicero's "On the Nature of The Gods," which began with the Epicurean spokesman Velleius defending the Epicurean point of view. This week will continue into Section 37 as Cotta, the Academic Skeptic, continues to attack the Epicurean view of the nature of divinity. XXXVII. ... for you asserted likewise that the form of the Deity is perceptible by the mind, but not by sense; that it is neither solid, nor invariable in number; that it is to be discerned by similitude and transition, and that a constant supply of images is perpetually flowing on from innumerable atoms, on which our minds are intent; so that we from that conclude that divine nature to be happy and everlasting. XXXVIII. What, in the name of those Deities concerning whom we are now disputing, is the meaning of all this? For if they exist only in thought, and have no solidity nor substance, what difference can there be between thinking of a Hippocentaur and thinking of a Deity? Other philosophers call every such conformation of the mind a vain motion; but you term it “the approach and entrance of images into the mind.” Thus, when I imagine that I behold T. Gracchus haranguing the people in the Capitol, and collecting their suffrages concerning M. Octavius, I call that a vain motion of the mind: but you affirm that the images of Gracchus and Octavius are present, which are only conveyed to my mind when they have arrived at the Capitol. The case is the same, you say, in regard to the Deity, with the frequent representation of which the mind is so affected that from thence it may be clearly understood that the Gods are happy and eternal. Let it be granted that there are images by which the mind is affected, yet it is only a certain form that occurs; and why must that form be pronounced happy? why eternal? But what are those images you talk of, or whence do they proceed? This loose manner of arguing is taken from Democritus; but he is reproved by many people for it; nor can you derive any conclusions from it: the whole system is weak and imperfect. For what can be more improbable than that the images of Homer, Archilochus, Romulus, Numa, Pythagoras, and Plato should come into my mind, and yet not in the form in which they existed? How, therefore, can they be those persons? And whose images are they? Aristotle tells us that there never was such a person as Orpheus the poet; and it is said that the verse called Orphic verse was the invention of Cercops, a Pythagorean; yet Orpheus, that is to say, the image of him, as you will have it, often runs in my head. What is the reason that I entertain one idea of the figure of the same person, and you another? Why do we image to ourselves such things as never had any existence, and which never can have, such as Scyllas and Chimæras? Why do we frame ideas of men, countries, and cities which we never saw? How is it that the very first moment that I choose I can form representations of them in my mind? How is it that they come to me, even in my sleep, without being called or sought after? XXXIX. The whole affair, Velleius, is ridiculous. You do not impose images on our eyes only, but on our minds. Such is the privilege which you have assumed of talking nonsense with impunity. But there is, you say, a transition of images flowing on in great crowds in such a way that out of many some one at least must be perceived! I should be ashamed of my incapacity to understand this if you, who assert it, could comprehend it yourselves; for how do you prove that these images are continued in uninterrupted motion? Or, if uninterrupted, still how do you prove them to be eternal? There is a constant supply, you say, of innumerable atoms. But must they, for that reason, be all eternal? To elude this, you have recourse to equilibration (for so, with your leave, I will call your Ἰσονομία), and say that as there is a sort of nature mortal, so there must also be a sort which is immortal. By the same rule, as there are men mortal, there are men immortal; and as some arise from the earth, some must arise from the water also; and as there are causes which destroy, there must likewise be causes which preserve. Be it as you say; but let those causes preserve which have existence themselves. I cannot conceive these your Gods to have any. But how does all this face of things arise from atomic corpuscles? Were there any such atoms (as there are not), they might perhaps impel one another, and be jumbled together in their motion; but they could never be able to impart form, or figure, or color, or animation, so that you by no means demonstrate the immortality of your Deity.

If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where you will find a discussion thread for each of our podcast episodes and many other topics.Last week when Joshua was away we discussed with Don some of the most important high-level conclusions we can learn about Epicurus based on Cicero's attacks against it. We will continue to apply those as we proceed to the end of Book two, but when we were last in Cicero's text we were dealing with Cicero's claim that the Epicurean happy man model will not only not be constantly happy, because he will sometimes be wretched; but that Epicurean philosophy can never prove its point so long as it connects everything with pleasure and pain. This week we pick up with Cicero saying that as a result, Epicureans like Torquatus should "abandon pleasure to the beasts."XXXIII ... Hence, Torquatus, we must discover some other form of the highest good for man; let us abandon pleasure to the beasts, whom you are accustomed to summon as witnesses about the supreme good. What if even beasts very often, under the guidance of the peculiar constitution of each, shew some of them kindness, even at the cost of toil, so that when they bear and rear their young it is very patent that they aim at something different from pleasure? Others again, rejoice in wanderings and in journeys; others in their assemblages imitate in a certain way the meetings of burgesses; in some kinds of birds we see certain signs of affection, as well as knowledge and memory; in many also we see regrets; shall we admit then that in beasts there are certain shadows of human virtues, unconnected with pleasure, while in men them- selves virtue cannot exist unless with a view-to pleasure? And shall we say that man, who far excels all other creatures, has received no peculiar gifts from nature?XXXIV. We in fact, if everything depends upon pleasure, are very far inferior to the beasts, for whom the earth unbidden, without toil of theirs, pours forth from her breast varied and copious food, while we with difficulty or hardly even with difficulty supply ourselves with ours, winning it by heavy toil. Yet I cannot on any account believe that the supreme good is the same for animals and for man. Pray what use is there in such elaborate preparations for acquiring the best accomplishments, or in such a crowd of the most noble occupations, or in such a train of virtues, if all these things are sought after for no other end but that of pleasure? Just as, supposing Xerxes, with his vast fleets and vast forces of cavalry and infantry, after bridging the Hellespont and piercing Athos, after marching over seas, and sailing over the land, then, when he had attacked Greece with such vehemence, had been asked by some one about the reason for such vast forces and so great a war, and had answered that he wanted to carry off some honey from Hymettus, surely such enormous exertions would have seemed purposeless; so precisely if we say that the wise man, endowed and equipped with the most numerous and important accomplishments and excellences, not traversing seas on foot, like the king, or mountains with fleets, but embracing in his thoughts all the heaven, and the whole earth with the entire sea, is in search of pleasure, then we shall be in effect saying that these vast efforts are for the sake of a drop of honey.Believe me, Torquatus, we are born to a loftier and grander destiny; and this is proved not merely by the endowments of our minds, which possess power to recollect countless experiences (in your case power unlimited) and an insight into the future not far removed from prophecy, and honor the governor of passion, and justice the loyal guardian of human fellowship, and a staunch and unwavering disregard of pain and death when there are toils to be endured or dangers to be faced - well, these are the endowments of our minds; I beg you now also to think even of our limbs and our senses, which will appear to you, like the other divisions of our body, not merely to accompany the virtues, but even to do them service. Now if in the body itself there are many things to be preferred to pleasure, strength for example, health, swiftness, beauty, what I ask do you suppose is the case with our minds? Those most learned men of old thought that mind contained a certain heavenly and godlike element. But if pleasure were equivalent to the supreme good, as you assert, it would be an enviable thing to live day and night without intermission in a state of extreme pleasure, all the senses being agitated by, and so to Say, steeped in sweetness of every kind. Now who is there deserving the name of man, that would choose to continue for one whole day in pleasure of such a kind? The Cyrenaics I admit are not averse to it; your friends treat these matters with greater decency; they perhaps with greater consistency. But let us survey in our thoughts not these very important arts, lacking which some men were called inert by our ancestors; what I ask is whether you suppose, I do not say Homer, Archilochus, or Pindar, but Phidias, Polyclitus, or Zeuxis, to have regulated their arts by pleasure. Will then an artist aim higher in order to secure beauty of form than a preeminent citizen in the hope to achieve beauty of action? Now what other reason is there for so serious a misconception, spread far and wide as it is, but that the philosopher who pronounces pleasure to be the supreme good takes counsel, not with that part of his mind in which thought and reflection reside, but with his passions, that is to say, with the most frivolous part of his soul? If gods exist, as even your school supposes, I ask you how they can be happy, when they cannot realize pleasure with their bodily faculties, or if they are happy without that kind of pleasure, why you refuse to allow that wise man can have similar intellectual enjoyment?

From your home in Ephesus?ION: Oh no, Socrates, from Epidaurus, from the festival of Asclepius. …SOCRATES: Well then, did you take any part in the competition? And how did you fare in it?ION: We carried off the first prize, Socrates.SOCRATES: That's splendid news. … I must confess, Ion, I've often envied you rhapsodes your art, which makes it right and proper for you to dress up and look as grand as you can. And how enviable also to have to immerse yourself in a great many good poets, especially Homer, the best and most inspired of them, and to have to get up his thought and not just his lines! For if one didn't understand what the poet says, one would never become a good rhapsode, because a rhapsode has to be an interpreter of the poet's thought to the audience, and that's impossible to do properly if one does not understand what he is saying. So all this is worth envying.ION: True, Socrates, true. At any rate, I find this side of my art has given me a lot of work, and I reckon I talk on Homer better than anybody. …SOCRATES: I'm glad to hear it, Ion. …ION: Yes indeed, Socrates, it's well worth hearing how splendidly I have embellished Homer. I think I've got to the point where I deserve to have the homeridae crown me with a golden crown.SOCRATES: Yes indeed, and one day I'll find myself time to listen to you. For the moment, however, answer me just this: does your expertise extend to Homer alone, or to Hesiod and Archilochus too?” (Plato, Ion, 530a-531a)Figs in Winter: New Stoicism and beyond is a reader-supported publication. Professor Richard Jolly of Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and a co-founder of the Stokes Jolly consultancy visits Technically Legal to discuss the importance of motivating legal organizations to change even when they are resistant to do so. Professor Jolly also shares stories from his experiences as a chef and a psychotherapist and explains how he draws upon them in his organizational and executive consulting practice. Professor Jolly also discusses the common psychological make-up of lawyers such as high skepticism and frequent reluctance towards change. These traits remind him of an essay by Philosopher Isaiah Berlin called the Hedgehog and the Fox, which is a reference to an idea from the Greek poet Archilochus: “a fox knows many things, but a hedgehog knows one big thing”.  Applying it to the legal profession, Professor Jolly explains that legal subject matter experts are like hedgehogs with deep expertise in one area, but in a rapidly changing world, the ability to adapt like a fox is increasingly important. Traditional law firms are full of hedgehogs, but organizations such as startups lean more toward foxes because they are better at adapting. The pandemic has accelerated the pace of change, and law firms need to be open to these changes to survive and thrive. Along those lines, Professor Jolly points out that education and training of young lawyers is more important now because of remote work and the new generation of lawyers want to practice differently than their older colleagues. Specifically, his research has shown that most new lawyers do not plan on spending a whole career at a single law firm. He also points out that law firms may have to adapt to the new reality that more work may have to be done by partners because associates are increasingly harder to come by.

The surviving fragments of his work show him to have been a metrical innovator of the highest ability.Archilochus's father was Telesicles, a wealthy Parian who founded a colony on the island of Thasos. Archilochus lived on both Paros and Thasos. Fragments of his poetry mention the solar eclipse of April 6, 648 BCE, and the wealth of the Lydian king Gyges (c. 680–645 BCE). The details of Archilochus's life, in the ancient biographical tradition, are derived for the most part from his poems—an unreliable source because the events he described may have been fictitious or may have involved imaginary personae or ritual situations.Modern discoveries, however, have supported the picture given in the poetry. Two inscriptions dedicated to Archilochus were discovered in a sacred area on Paros; they are named, after the men who dedicated them, the Mnesiepes inscription (3rd century BCE) and the Sosthenes inscription (1st century BCE). Archilochus's self-presentation was taken seriously as early as the late 5th century BCE by the Athenian politician and intellectual Critias, who denounced him for presenting himself as the impoverished, quarrelsome, foul-mouthed, lascivious son of a slave woman. Some scholars feel that the Archilochus portrayed in his poems is too scurrilous to be real.Archilochus probably served as a soldier. According to ancient tradition, he fought against Thracians on the mainland near Thasos and died when the Thasians were fighting against soldiers from the island of Naxos. In one famous poem, Archilochus tells, without embarrassment or regret, of throwing his shield away in battle. (“I saved my life. What do I care about my shield? The hell with it! I'll buy another just as good.”) The motif of the abandoned shield appears again in the lyric poems of Alcaeus and Anacreon, in a parody by Aristophanes (Peace), and in a learned variation by the Latin poet Horace (Carmina).Although the truth is difficult to discern with certainty from the poems and other evidence, Archilochus may have been disreputable. He was particularly famous in antiquity for his sharp satire and ferocious invective. It was said that a man named Lycambes betrothed his daughter Neobule to the poet and then later withdrew the plan. In a papyrus fragment published in 1974 (the “Cologne Epode”)—the longest surviving piece of Archilochus's poetry—a man, who is apparently the poet himself, tells in alternately explicit and hinting language how he seduced the sister of Neobule after having crudely rejected Neobule herself. According to the ancient accounts, Lycambes and his daughters committed suicide, shamed by the poet's fierce mocking.Archilochus was the first known Greek poet to employ the elegiac couplet and various iambic and trochaic metres, ranging from dimeter to tetrameter, as well as epodes, lyric metres, and asinarteta (a mixture of different metres). He was a master of the Greek language, moving from Homeric formulas to the language of daily life in a few lines. He was the first European author to make personal experiences and feelings the main subject of his poems: the controlled use of the personal voice in his verse marks a distinct departure from other surviving Greek verse, which is typically more formulaic and heroic. For his technical accomplishments Archilochus was much admired by later poets, such as Horace, but there was also severe criticism, especially of a moralistic character, by writers such as the poet Pindar (5th century BCE).From https://www.britannica.com/biography/Archilochus-Greek-author. For more information about Archilochus:“Archilochus”: http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A2008.01.0480%3Avolume%3D2%3Atext%3D21“Archilochus: A poet and a mercenary?”: https://www.ancientworldmagazine.com/articles/archilochus-poet-mercenary/

GUILDERLAND — Bill Batt is a man of ideas — big ideas.Right now, he's organizing the annual Council of Georgist Organizations conference to be held this year in Albany, from July 15 to 17.Batt's signature sign-off on his emails is a line from the ancient Greek poet Archilochus, “The fox knows many things — the hedgehog one big one.”“I tend to see things in very global perspectives,” says Batt in the week's Enterprise podcast.Over his lifetime, he has embraced three paradigms to explain the world. The first was the cognitive developmental psychology of Jean Piaget and Lawrence Kohlberg, understanding the stages of learning and moral development that people go through.Soon after graduating from college, where he studied political science, Batt was among the very first Peace Corps volunteers. He lived in a small village in northern Thailand and didn't speak English for two years.“Their ways of thinking were very limited by their own experience ….,” he said of the villagers. “That led also to their cognitive limitations. But of course, those people who were more sophisticated were the ones that had exposure to cities and literature and history.”In his thirties, Batt found a new way to look at things through the integrative psychology of Ken Wilbur. Wilbur's integral theory maps human experience with a four-quadrant grid, along the axes of “individual-collective” and “interior-exterior.”The paradigm that currently enthralls Batt is a modern take on the 19th-Century political economist Henry George. Batt became enamored of George's theories after he stopped teaching as a university professor to serve for a decade on the New York State Legislative Tax Study Commission.Read the full article at https://altamontenterprise.com/04012022/bill-batt-says-wed-have-fairer-taxes-and-richer-economy-if-we-followed-henry-george See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Greek poet Archilochus said “a fox knows many things, a hedgehog knows one big thing.” This phrase inspired a famous essay by a 20th century philosopher named Isaiah Berlin, who said that pretty much all people can be categorized as either “foxes” or “hedgehogs”. Foxes tend to be agile and perceptive, whereas hedgehogs tend to be resolute and hyper-focused on their end goal. Historian John Lewis Gaddis took Berlin's framework one step further. In his book On Grand Strategy, Dr. Gaddis categorizes great political leaders as landing somewhere on the fox-hedgehog spectrum: Xerxes I, Philip II, Ronald Reagan are all classic hedgehogs. Elizabeth I, Shakespeare, and Hillary Clinton are all examples of foxes. And Gaddis says if you're lucky, you'll sometimes have a leader who embodies both, as was the case with Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt. On this episode of UnTextbooked, producer Will Bourell interviews Dr. Gaddis about the traits that make for effective and ineffective leaders.Book: On Grand StrategyGuest: John Lewis Gaddis, Professor of history at Yale UniversityProducer: Will BourellMusic: Silas Bohen and Coleman HamiltonEditors: Bethany Denton and Jeff Emtman

In this episode, Dustin talks with Jan-Benedict Steenkamp about his book, Time to Lead, and how historical leadership examples might help us improve our skills better than the latest management fads. You'll discover how to use your emotions to think, not think with your emotions, so that you can make your followers part of something larger than themselves. Professor Steenkamp shares 16 well-researched and carefully-curated historical case studies of world leaders that can help you deepen your wisdom, clarify your thinking and improve your outcomes as a leader.Jan-Benedict says, "Everybody can improve their leadership qualities by reading about other leaders, how they resolved their dilemmas, and why they were successful." You'll learn the four types of leadership metaphors: the hedgehog, the fox, the eagle and the ostrich. Adapted from Isaiah Berlin's review of the Greek poet Archilochus' statement that “the fox knows many smaller things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.” He writes, “According to Berlin, the distinction between hedgehogs and foxes marks one of the deepest differences, which divide human beings."On the program, we discuss how Franklin Delano Roosevelt persuaded a war-weary nation to enter the Second World War, how the best leaders know very well where they want to go but are not dogmatic in the means they use to get there and why you should not attempt to become a kind of person you are not.Links Mentioned in The Burleson Box:Time to Lead Book Professor Steenkamp's WebsiteIn Search of Excellence BookUNC Kenen-Flagler Business School***This episode is brought to you by Market Hardware. "The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing." Archilochus of Paros Hedgehogs have a single grand idea that they apply to everything, while foxes come up with a new idea for every situation. As per the book “Good to Great” by Jim Collins, here are the 3 key principles of The Hedgehog Concept: What you are deeply passionate about What you can be the best in the world at What best drives your economic/resource engine Foxes are known to be clever, sly animals but they have way too many different strategies to get what they want. They pursue a range of goals in one go. Hedgehog on the other hand, have one goal in mind and they strive to do it well! Most people initially favor the Fox, cunning and skillful, but this can have a negative effect on what you are trying to achieve in the long run. You are more likely to be scattered and inconsistent in your work. Hedgehogs are more likely to be winners. They focus on what they are good at and do it well! Transformations from “good to great” come by a series of good decisions made consistently with a Hedgehog Concept, supremely well executed, accumulating one upon another, over a long period of time. Think about your company, career, or even life in general, are you a fox or a hedgehog? Do you jump from one idea to the next to achieve a goal? Are you consistent with what you want and work hard on that alone? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nadjmat/support

What do you do when life gets crazy? What will you do when life gets crazier? The answer is that we all fall back to our training! Archilochus said, “we do not rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.” In the last week we went on a few extraordinary hikes in the Rocky Mountains. On Saturday we had the opportunity and privilege to help rescue a young man who was injured in a rockslide. We were only able to help him because we were prepared to help him. We were prepared because we have been training. The same is true for every important area of life!

I know very well what propaganda is; I know what thought control is and how to avoid it from having been taught in schools in the military. What we're seeing right now in the US during the COVID-19 pandemic is text-book thought control. The first thing you want to do to break someone down or control them is no. 1 create confusion and no. 2 instill fear...What do we have going on right now? Confusion; wear a mask, don't wear a mask...wear a mask, don't wear a mask. They don't know. Social distancing? We don't know; is it 6 feet, 12 feet, 18 feet? Ask anyone on the street right now; what does the CDC say about face masks? Nobody knows. Then they instill fear by putting people in unusual circumstances; what is more unusual than social distancing and mask-wearing? It is textbook mind control. Step back and ask, Is this about health? Or is somebody trying to control me?" - Keith Norris   Get 15% off your CURED Nutrition order with the code WELLNESSFORCE   ---> Get The Morning 21 System: A simple and powerful 21 minute system designed to give you more energy to let go of old weight and live life well.   JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | *REVIEW THE PODCAST*   Wellness Force Radio Episode 354 CDO & Co-Founder of Paleo f(x), Keith Norris, explains how the government and organizations are instilling confusion and fear to enforce mass mind control, explores how humans are designed to live vs the modern-day American lifestyle, discusses the war going on inside our collective consciousness and unpacks the "bread and circuses" that are present amongst us today in Corporate America.   Are the government lockdowns, CDC guidelines, and face masks about health or is somebody trying to control you? Why he decided to leave corporate America because of the bread and circuses it's creating to launch Paleo f(x) with his wife, Michelle Norris. His transition from the military to work for the corporate pharmaceutical industry with the mission to help people. The miserable emotions he and his wife were feeling living the "American Dream" to the point that they wondered if this dream was actually a lie. George Carlin on "the American Dream" The hunger he has always had inside to search for the truth in everything. Why we should pause, observe, and question whether or not what we're reading in the mass media news is true or false. Unpacking the reality we experience first hand and how we project that onto other people.   [19:00] The War Inside Our Collective Consciousness Exploring the consciousness here in the 3D and where we actually are now in human history. The huge spike of people getting interested in plant medicine and psychedelics for deep-dive self-exploration and contemplation. His and Michelle's belief that the reason why everyone is all of a sudden interested in plant medicine is that the Universe is trying to wake up as many people as possible. The importance of getting curious and questioning what is happening around you especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. 353 Dr. Ben Lynch 345 Dr. Zach Bush The old paradigm that is dying as we begin to figure out what we want to create together and what we want to be rebirthed through Mother Earth. Breaking down the Bread and Circuses that we're experiencing today: A diet of entertainment or political policies on which the masses are fed to keep them happy and docile. Questioning whether the government lockdowns, CDC guidelines, and face masks are about health or if someone is trying to control us.   [27:00] Taking Back Our Power From The 1% Why cutting our connection to Mother Earth and the further we go is actually disconnecting us from both ourselves and our brothers and sisters. The power of decentralization to ensure that fewer and fewer people with a motive are able to control our leaders. Why it's so important to talk to people in real life about what's going on instead of allowing the mass media to hijack your thoughts. The forced division of racism that is being driven in society to control people's thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. How racism was handled during his military career and the fact that you were out of the organization if you displayed any behavior of it. Why courage is grown over time and we need to begin to reach deep for the courage to question our own motives, what lense we are seeing things through, and our beliefs. How plant medicine and psychedelics help to put people in a situation where they feel safe and they can disassociate enough from a story to question it objectively. Why it is so hard for us to erase some things from the hard drive we developed between the time we were born and age 7. 213 Bonnie Kelly   [38:00] The Monumental Changes To Come in 2020 Shawn Stevenson - The Model Health Show The fact that there are 60 million people just in the USA who don't have a job or are in massive financial stress due to COVID-19. Why thresholds of pain like what COVID-19 has brought us can actually lead to something beautiful even if we cannot see it now. The financial struggles Keith and Michelle faced in 2008 with the recession and housing crisis. Important choices they had to make moving forwards including whether they should go back to work for corporate America or hold true to the course they set for themselves in 2006 which eventually led to Paleo f(x). Other great entrepreneurial ventures that came from 2008 besides Paleo f(x) such as Airbnb. How humans are designed to be resilient and push forward to create great change for their lives in the face of adversity. What monumental changes he predicts will happen after 2020 that makes 2008 look like child's play. 086 Mark Divine Why the shared suffering we collectively experience will actually bring us closer to one another.   [46:00] The Courage To Speak Your Truth Why the phrase, 'new normal,' has been hijacked by those in power as propaganda to control us. How to not get caught in the idea that 'Zoom' is now the only way to communicate and face masks are now a part of daily life as the 'new normal.' The criteria that the government has put out for large events such as Paleo f(x) and how they're planning to work around it including hosting mini-events all over the USA. Why collaboration is key because no one is going to make it out of the mess that COVID-19 has caused alone. How entrepreneurs are reaching out to one another to help during this difficult time. The fact that we don't grow just by sitting back and being comfortable; we grow when we are thrown into the fire and are challenged to change. Why those who are in control don't care how you react as long as you do react while they're playing not just one side of the story but all of the sides.   [55:00] How To Know When To Fight Or Let Go The message he has received from plant medicine about when to know if it's time to fight for or to let go of something. How to listen to your intuition and innate intelligence to know where the truth and love are by sitting back, taking a breath, and not get caught up in the whirlwind around you. Why the emotion, anger (not irrational anger), can be a source of love if it's coming from a grounded, conscious, and centered place. The stage fright Keith has faced and how he has worked to overcome it on his own and with people such as Bo Eason to switch that sensation from fear to excitement. Bo Eason 275 Paul Chek How Keith and Michelle are moving forward with Paleo f(x) and the Wellness Tribe they've created from 2008. Why Paleo f(x) means so much more to them now than the house, cars, and their children's schools during their "American Dream" era. The fact that materialistic things just don't mean anything anymore compared to having loved ones in your life once you realize that you don't need a lot to be comfortable and happy. BREATHE M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community   Power Quotes From The Show   The Universe Wants Us To Wake Up "About three or four years ago, Michelle and I noticed this exponential growth in people who wanted to find out about plant medicines and psychedelics. Not psychedelics for party use but for deep-dive self-exploration and contemplation. We truly believe that the universe is trying, right now, to wake up as many people as possible. It doesn't a whole lot of nudging to get people to get to the point of questioning and that is the biggest hurdle. Do I sit back and accept what I'm being told or do I question it? Does it make sense? Do I feel like I'm being played or lied to? Is there a narrative of control, who would want to control me, and why? Don't stop asking, 'Why?'" - Keith Norris     Tuning Into Our Innate Intelligence "How do I know when to fight or to let things be? You will know from your own innate intelligence where truth and love are. Trust your innate intelligence but the only way you can do that is if you stand back, take a breath, and don't get caught up in the whirlwind around you. You have to be quiet and in a calm place to be able to listen eternally. If you get caught up in the fanfare of the bread and circuses, it's not going to happen." - Keith Norris     How We Can Win Against Mind Control "Those who are looking to control you are looking for you to react. You are being spun and spun up to create a diversion and profit for someone else. Truly those in control don't care if you react in favor of one thing or the other because really they're playing both sides and all sides; they're going to win either way. The only way they don't win is if there is calm and no reaction. We have to step back and see what is actually happening with the face masks, COVID-19 lockdowns, and social distancing regulations." - Keith Norris     Links From Today's Show  167 Michelle Norris Theory To Practice ID Life ARX Fit Efficient Exercise George Carlin on "the American Dream" 353 Dr. Ben Lynch 345 Dr. Zach Bush 213 Bonnie Kelly Shawn Stevenson - The Model Health Show 086 Mark Divine Bo Eason 275 Paul Chek Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes BREATHE M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Keith Norris Facebook Instagram Twitter Paleo f(x) Facebook Instagram Twitter   About Keith Norris Keith Norris is one of those few lucky souls who has been able to completely transition out of corporate America and dive headlong into his passion for bettering lives by teaching the art and science of physical culture. Just imagine for a moment.. You and your partner have had a lovely meal down town.. You’re walking back to your car.. You’re walking towards the pay station in the car park.. No one else is around.. You already feel a little uncomfortable.. Then it happens.. Someone jumps out from a dark corner and says.. ‘give me your wallet..’ What do you do? If you’re a black belt martial artist you’re going to be in a completely different situation to someone who has had absolutely no self-defence training.. As far back at 650 BC the principle says. "We do not rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our training." - Archilochus, Greek Soldier, Poet, c. 650 BC ‘You react and respond to situations in your personal and business life to your highest level of the training you have had.’ Your level of training will determine your results. The highly trained black belt might either tell the person to take a walk.. or.. Wait until they make a move then put them into a hold that freezes them.. Then calls the police to make a citizens arrest.. The untrained person might just hand over their wallet.. Either way.. your level of training will determine the options, choices and results you get.. If you’re in business and you don’t have enough leads.. Your training in marketing and lead generation will determine what your next steps are.. If you’re getting leads but getting too many No’s.. If you conversion rate is too low, same again.. In about 650 B.C. the Greek poet Archilochus wrote, “The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.”The renaissance scholar Erasmus quoted Archilochus in 1500 in his famous Adagia, saying, “Multa novit vulpes, verum echinus unum magnum.” In 1953, the philosopher Isaiah Berlin expanded on Archilochus and Erasmus in his often-quoted essay, The Hedgehog and the Fox. In 2017, University of Pennsylvania psychologist Philip Tetlock completed a 20-year study that contrasted the abilities of the one-big-thing “hedgehog” experts against the many-little-things “fox” non-experts to make accurate predictions about geopolitical events. Does it surprise you to learn that the “fox” non-experts outperformed the “hedgehog” experts by an overwhelming margin? What Tetlock discovered will help you tell the story of your company in a way that will cause customers to feel like they truly know you.American businesspeople tend to believe that every successful business is built on a single big idea, “one big thing.” But sadly, that bit of traditional wisdom is more tradition than wisdom. “One big thing” is hedgehog thinking. But foxes roam freely, listen carefully and consume omnivorously. Foxes know “many little things.” Customers will love the “many little things” story of your company told from the perspective of a fox. The story you need to be telling is the real one, a fascinating tale of hopes and dreams and failures and successes and realizations and refinements. Don't worry, we're going to help you write it. In 2011, the fox-like director of the British Museum, Neil MacGregor, used 100 objects in his museum as prisms through which he told the entire story of our world. That book, A History of the World in 100 Objects, became a wildly popular radio series and a blockbuster New York Times bestseller. The Wall Street Journal called it, “An enthralling and profoundly humane book that every civilized person should read.” The fascinating, riveting, highly-engaging story of your company is hidden in 10 objects that lie within your grasp.Bring those objects with you to Wizard Academy. The ancient Greek poet Archilochus said, "A fox knows many things, but a hedgehog one important thing." The original meaning of the quote has been lost to the mists of time, but my guest today argues that it's a great metaphor for classifying two types of leadership strategies. His name is John Lewis Gaddis and he's a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, an expert on the Cold War, and a professor of military history at Yale University. Today, Professor Gaddis and I talk about his book, On Grand Strategy, in which he distills insights about strategy from political and military history going all the way back to antiquity. We begin our conversation discussing what strategy is and what it means to have grand strategy. John then shares the analogy of the fox and the hedgehog, and the benefits and downsides to each approach to thinking and acting. We then discuss why the best strategists combine fox-like and hedgehog-like mindsets, examples from history of great leaders who had both, and how he helps his students see the relationship between principle and practice. I had the pleasure of having a conversation with a young Kiwi dude currently residing in L.A. His name is Stephen McDowall, or better known on social media as “The Buzzy Kiwi”. Stephen's plan for his life hit a bump a couple of years back. Just out of uni and working as a self-employed personal trainer an old rugby injury came back to haunt him. Undergoing what he thought was a routine surgery, he woke up to the news that the cartilage in his hip had started dying and he was experiencing arthritic changes. Instead of being back at work in 3 days, he couldn't walk for 8 weeks, and couldn't exercise for 8 months. I got to talk with him on the podcast about what happened and then his re-evaluation of what was important to the way he lived his life. Here are a couple of my take away points from the conversation with Stephen. “My whole life was sports, when that was taken from me I needed a new passion” Stephen's life had revolved around multiple sports, but as with many young Kiwi males the main one being rugby. He had chosen to pursue a career in the fitness industry on top of that. Nearly everything he did revolved around sport or exercise. If that isn't a passion I'm not sure what is. I've been injured often enough to know the short term feeling of loss associated with not being able to move. Thankfully all my injuries are ones that I've recovered from, they've slowed me short term but haven't stopped me being able to do anything in the long run. To have your movement taken from you, coupled with losing your main drive at the same time is massive. It speaks to the phenomenal resilience Stephen has that he was able to take that on board so quickly. I believe that part of the reason he was successful in overcoming this sense of loss was that he developed something else he was interested in very quickly. Stephen knew that he was interested in travelling from the small amounts he had done prior to his surgery. Planning and eventually participating in this gave him a sense of purpose to get out of bed in the morning. Something I can attest to that is vitally important as you're rehabbing from an injury. He could have chosen to sit in that sense of loss, but that likely wouldn't have led to us having our conversation, or him touching other peoples' lives. Stephen's ability to quickly recognise how important this sense of purpose was in his life is impressive, but his strategic approach to finding a new one is probably even more so. After surgery he identified other things in life outside of sport and exercise that he was interested in, then set about researching how he could participate. He had to take into account his financial situation as well as his likely physical abilities when figuring out how he could get involved. Camp America was a perfect first step and things have ballooned from there. As much as Stephen says “I make this up as I go”, taking the time to understand what excites him and following what he is curious about has led him down this path. “Change it from being loss to being a lesson of some sort” Stephen was able to reframe this experience from being one where he “lost” (massive) parts of himself; movement, career, and even part of his identity, to an opportunity to re-group and learn. This is likely another reason for his success. Having an experience is just that, an experience. Stephen was able to view this experience as an opportunity to re-shape his life rather than losing the things that mattered to him. Exploring the idea of travel has led to some incredible experiences in fantastic places, as well as the opportunity to have it sustain him. Stephen likely wouldn't have been able to have these experiences without the injury and the results from it. If it hadn't happened he may well be still working as a personal trainer in Dunedin. I don't want to put words in his mouth but I'd be happy to bet that he would much prefer the path his life has taken. “It's not all rainbows and fairies — you go through some very uncomfortable times, but it's worth it for those things that you experience” This may be my favourite line from our whole chat, I love Stephen's viewpoint here. Uncomfortable experiences abound when we start to test ourselves and push away from what we know, what is safe. Situations come up that we have no experience dealing with, that can threaten us physically but usually much more likely threaten us mentally. When unfamiliar situations come up for me I often find myself pulling back into myself, trying to revert back to what feels “safe” and shying away from what is uncomfortable even though I'm excited by what lies on the other side of it. Stephen shared his method of dealing with this on the podcast. He stops and puts his back to the wall so he feels safe, then sits and asks himself questions until he figures out what he is going to do, how he is going to get through, or around, the uncomfortable. Coming to a safe place is a great way to start, it allows us to slow things down, our breathing and more importantly our thought processes, often these are connected. Getting to a safe place may not require finding a physically safe place, instead it could be a step back from a turbulent mental situation, having a little distance between your thoughts and the situation. Not getting to this safe place first can lead to mistakes. When I'm flustered I tend to speed up. The more I speed up the more mistakes I make. The more mistakes I make the more flustered I become. It turns into a downward spiral. After getting safe I can slow down and ask myself better questions and take time with the answers to give myself the best options for dealing with the uncomfortable. Sometimes life doesn't give you the time to get yourself “safe” before it requires a decision, but more often than not it will. If I can train myself to get to get into this “safe” space when there is no time pressure I'm more likely to be able to get there when the pressure is on, and my decisions are more likely to be the ones I'm proud of when I look back. After all “we don't rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training” — Archilochus. Stephen has made this method work for him, and as far as I can see, it seems to serve him well The final thought I want to leave you with, is that it “isn't all rainbows and fairies”. But if you can navigate your way through the uncomfortable you may see a few on your journey and to me that is well worth the tip. The Greek poet Archilochus is known for the phrase, "The fox knows many things; the hedgehog one big thing." This week, we'll use this metaphor as a way to understand two different cognitive styles. The first is that of a tactician who is comfortable with nuance and contradiction (the fox), the second is that of a big thinker, motivated by one organizing idea (the hedgehog). We'll explore this idea through the story of a pioneering surgeon whose hedgehog tendencies led him to great triumphs, and a heartbreaking tragedy.

There is a line from the Greek poet Archilochus which is generally translated as: The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing. While foxes might be cunning and able to devise hundreds of strategies for catching unsuspecting hedgehogs off guard and eating them for dinner, the hedgehog has only one defensive strategy - to curl up in a ball, spiky spines exposed, and wait until the fox (or other predator) gives up and goes away...
