This is the Live United podcast presented by the Tulsa Area United Way. On today's episode, we're looking at two of the greatest needs in our communities – food and blood. According to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, 594,000 Oklahomans (1 in 6) are food insecure, including 208,000 children. As for blood donations, 1,200 blood donors are needed daily in our area to maintain an adequate blood supply. But the Oklahoma Blood Institute's blood supply is less than half of what hospitals and patients currently need. And our partner agency, America Red Cross, is experiencing a 10-year low in blood donations. To put both issues into perspective, our guests include 1. Chris Bernard, executive director of Hunger Free Oklahoma, which is one of Tulsa Area United Way's community collaborations. 2. Nathan Woodmansee, executive director of partner agency Sand Springs Community Services. 3. Sydney Chastine, of the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. 4. We'll close out the podcast with an interview featuring John Armitage, CEO of the Oklahoma Blood Institute. Before we get to our interviews, I need you to make a difference in your communities by participating in Tulsa Area United Way's Third Annual Day of Caring Food and Blood Drive. On June 24, you can donate nonperishable food items at one of 16 donation sites, including BancFirst Wagoner, First Oklahoma Bank, Hilti, Jim Norton Toyota, Jim Norton T-Town Chevrolet, Mabrey Bank, and SpiritBank Bristow. From June 20-26, you can also shop at any Oasis Fresh Market and Supermercados Morelos stores and donate your groceries to the Food and Blood Drive right there in the store. COPES INFO For details about Most people think about crisis services as telephone intervention, a suicide hotline, and/or mobile response, and they are right. Family & Children's Service's Community Outreach Psychiatric Emergency Services (COPES and COPES for Kids) is that, but it's also so much more. As Oklahoma's only 24-7 free mobile crisis program serving adults and children in psychiatric crisis, COPES prevents suicide by providing the least restrictive level of care. If you or someone that you know is in crisis, you can contact COPES at (918) 744-4800. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tauw/message

What Corporate Social Responsibility Means with Stephania Grober & Mercedes Millberry Fowler

This is the Live United Podcast presented by the nonprofit Tulsa Area United Way. Today, we're talking about something that the United Way relies on to help provide our community's human services safety net, and that is Corporate Social Responsibility. To put that into perspective, just imagine a company like one of my favorites, Ben & Jerry's. Yeah, they make delicious ice cream – Chubby Hubby is the best! -- but they also support the causes most dear to the company itself and its employees. For instance, The Ben & Jerry's Foundation awards more than $1.8 million each year to initiatives across the US targeting sustainability and community action. When we decided to do a pod on corporate social responsibility, there was only person we had in mind to co-host as we talk about this subject --- the ever-amazing Mercedes Millberry Fowler. Mercedes is a superstar community volunteer and handles Community Affairs for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, which is a proud supporter of the Tulsa Area United Way. And when we asked Mercedes to talk about the importance of corporate social responsibility, she had the great idea to invite a fellow superstar of the volunteering community to join us as a guest -- Stephania (pronounced Stephanie) Grober, Vice President for Oklahoma Plan Operations for Blue Cross and Blue Shield Oklahoma. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tauw/message

Alison Anthony, president and CEO of the Tulsa Area United Way, interviews Marla Bradshaw, recipient of the Clydella Hentschel Women in Leadership award. It is given each year by the Tulsa Area United Way's Women United Group. It is named in honor of Clydella Hentschel, who was a pioneer for women in our community. She and her husband, Dave, were the first husband and wife team to chair our United Way campaign. So it is truly appropriate that the Women United Clydella Hentschel award goes to Marla Bradshaw. Marla and her husband, Steve, were the second husband and wife team to chair the campaign. Marla Bradshaw is a committed community volunteer representing the spirit of the Clydella Hentschel Award for Women in Leadership. Over the years, Marla has demonstrated exceptional leadership and mentoring that has inspired and helped other women to reach their full potential. She devotes time and energy to many United Way agencies, in addition to several organizations outside the United Way umbrella that have a mission of supporting at-risk and underserved individuals. Marla co-chaired the Tocqueville Society for United Way in 2010 when we launched the “Step-Up” program and in 2016, she and Steve co-chaired the United Way campaign, raising over $26 million. Marla's philanthropic work extends far beyond fundraising and serving on boards. Earlier this year, year she volunteered at the Tulsa Health Department's COVID-19 vaccination clinic for 14 weeks, assisting in efforts to boost vaccination rates in the Tulsa area. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tauw/message

This is the weekly Live United podcast presented by the nonprofit Tulsa Area United Way. I'm Matthew Gleason. Today, we're spotlighting Tulsa Area United Way's Winter Holiday Volunteer Opportunities that are perfect for you and your family to show how much you care for the people served by our partner agencies. You can get involved by going to tauw.org/winter volunteer. And that link will take you directly to the full list of all of the opportunities. And some of them are going on right now. Some of them are continuing through December and even into the new year, there are still going to be needs that we'll be highlighting. Our guests today are Angela Tollett, executive director of Wagoner Area Neighbors, and Brian Young, of Youth Services of Tulsa. I love both of their stories because Angela and Brian deeply understand how much it means to someone, especially a child or teenager, when someone takes the time to brighten their holiday with, of course, a gift, but also a reminder that they are aren't alone and that someone really cares about them. So with that, I want to thank you for listening today and please share this episode on your social media channels. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tauw/message

You're listening to a special holiday episode of the Live United podcast. We'll call it Meditating United, just for fun. So the holidays are here, and we're all taking time to relax with our friends and loved ones. This is the perfect time to take 10 minutes and reflect on everything we are grateful for in our lives. For me, I'm grateful for everyone who helped the Tulsa Area United Way raise over $25 million to strengthen our community's social safety net. Despite all of the challenges we've all faced during the pandemic, we never gave up hope of reaching the goal because, as our CEO Alison Anthony said, "we have proven that when we come together, and each do a little bit of what we can, that's the power of living United, that's the power of each person doing what they can so that together we're so much stronger." So what are you grateful for? Let's take the next 10 minutes and meditate on the good things in our lives. Both big and small. And I want to say thank you to my meditation hero, Jacob Beaumont, of our partner agency Mental Health Association Oklahoma, for inspiring this podcast with his kindness and wisdom. Be well, friend. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tauw/message
