Join us as we speak with Daniele Hunter, Junior Agent at McIntosh & Otis, AALA member, and AALA DEI committee and Literary Agents of Change member! Becoming a literary agent is not for the faint of heart. As a passion-led industry that puts up many financial barriers to entry (unpaid internships, sky-high NYC rents, and earnings for many young workers well below a livable wage), publishing has historically been an industry that hires the most privileged. Today we talk about the fundamental need for diversity in publishing and what the AALA is doing to help mitigate those barriers. Learn more about the benefit auction here: https://literaryagentsofchange.org/auction https://twitter.com/litagtsofchange https://www.instagram.com/literaryagentsofchange/ Daniele Hunter (she/her) is a queer, chronically ill, disabled junior agent in the children's department at McIntosh & Otis. She started at McIntosh & Otis in 2016 as an intern and has been there ever since! She has a BA in English with concentrations in Literary Criticism, Poetry, and Creative Writing from Drew University. Prior to agenting, she held various odd jobs in the publishing industry, from proofreading to teaching and working on literary journals. She's also a member of the American Association of Literary Agents and is on their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee, and co-directs their fellowship program through Literary Agents of Change. In her spare time, she reads way too quickly, sings opera, and puts her ambidexterity to good use as a knitter. She lives in New Jersey with her spouse and their cat.
Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Bianca Marais, CeCe Lyra, and Carly Watters. We'll be taking an inside look at the publishing industry. Before diving in, I wanted to make a quick note. Our wonderful guests are the co-hosts of a fantastic podcast that has a particular word in its title. It would be impossible to talk about their show without saying this particular word, so consider this a heads up that there will be salty language in this episode. If you're listening in public or have little ones around, now would be the time to put on some headphones. Bianca Marais is the author of the bestselling The Witches of Moonshyne Manor, as well as the beloved Hum If You Don't Know the Words and If You Want to Make God Laugh, and the Audible Original, The Prynne Viper. The popular podcast The Shit No One Tells You About Writing, for which CeCe is a co-host, has over one million downloads. You can find her on her website or follow her on Twitter and Instagram. Carly Watters is a SVP and Senior Literary Agent at P.S. Literary and the sitting VP of PACLA, the Professional Association of Canadian Literary Agents. This is the last installment of our MADE IN AMERICA special - where we take a look at what it means today when the term "Made in America" is used relative to new vehicle sourcing. The feds took a swing at this challenge with the American Automobile Labeling Act back in 1994, but the information falls short in many areas. The annual Cars.com American Made Index attempts to build on the AALA with additional relevant information that consumers may find helpful.

Punjabi Mothers are great there is no doubt about it. Punjab is Punjab today because the mothers here gave birth to Warriors, Poets, Gurus, Disciples and Intellectuals. In this Episode we pay tribute to Mothers of Punjab by jokes and stories about them. Written by - Harshdeep Singh | Sarabjeet Singh | Sandeep Singh | Sound by - Creative BenchersConcept by - Creative BenchersSaade Aala Radio - A Creative Benchers Propertywww.creativebenchers.comLinks - YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/saadeaalaradioInstagram - https://instagram.com/saadeaalaradioFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/SaadeAalaRadio Support the show

“Authors who are marginalized are writing to a marginalized audience. And I think it's time that they be given the voice to write to all audiences. I'm really making it a mission to do that.” – Jessica Faust, Principal Literary Agent and Founder of BookEnds Literary Abigail K. Perry sits down with Jessica Faust to talk about her mission to bring more marginalized voices into publishing. She also shares her goals as a leader, including how she mentors the team at BookEnds so that they can continue to make real change in publishing. Jessica's MSWL leans heavily towards Upmarket and Women's Fiction these days, although she has a variety of genres she's interested in (see below). On the craft of writing, Jessica discusses why every book needs a plot twist—but not in the way every writer thinks. Additionally, Jessica emphasizes how the author-agent relationship is a business partnership, and that communication is key to a long-lasting career. She sheds light on what success means to different authors, how she helps her clients and agents define and gain their definition of success, and why some of her proudest moments in agenting aren't bestsellers, but authors she's helped build a sustainable career in writing. About Jessica: As owner and President at BookEnds, Jessica Faust is honored to spend every day with some of the most talented authors and agents in the business. From BookEnds' inception in 1999, Jessica has always believed that her number one job is to be an author advocate. As BookEnds has grown, she now adds agent advocate to that responsibility. In addition to constantly growing BookEnds in new and innovative directions, Jessica represents many bestselling and award-winning authors. Her focus is on bringing more underrepresented and marginalized voices into publishing and her areas of expertise include mystery, suspense, upmarket, literary, and women's fiction. In nonfiction, she's seeking books and authors who will make her a better person and a better leader. Jessica began her career as an acquisitions editor at Berkley Publishing, Macmillan, and Wiley. In addition to nearly 15 years of blogging, Jessica has a regular role on the BookEnds YouTube channel, has taught at New York University's Continuing Education Program, written a publishing column, and has been honored by a number of different publishing organizations. In this episode, I'm excited to bring to you guys a conversation with a very close friend, certified wellness coach and founder of Najoum Health, Aala Shurbjy! I'm especially excited to bring her on to talk about her experience with fad diets, and how after diving deep into nutrition and functional medicine she has been able to create a food plan that consistently made her enjoy healthy food! We deep dive into 2 of the 5 major categories of success in this episode: Physical Health and Career/Purpose. This awesome discussion covers everything from how to find and chase passions, and how it stems from the 3 major curiosities one has, the nitty gritty of an emerging entrepreneur (it's not all sunshine and roses) and more!Aala has a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, has multiple certifications in the wellness coaching space, and helps clients understand their body and nutrition while putting them on a program to not only lose weight but to feel more energetic and even reduce anxiety in her company, Najoum Health. Ever feeling lethargic and coffee doesn't work on you anymore? Did you know that there is a supplement called Coq-10 that you can get from certain foods that is directly correlated to your energy levels and since your body doesn't produce it, you have to get it either in your food plan or supplements. I had no idea until sitting down with Aala that magnesium can affect not only bowel movements but help with anxiety a little as well. I'm definitely going to get blood work done from her and understand my deficiencies so I can have a healthier internal body. You should too, as Najoum health also offers blood work, supplements from the online store, and coaching/food plans as well! Please leave a like and subscribe and continue to comment your thoughts. Aala Marra is a very special person who's been able to self-heal and overcome a lot! Only 26, she's deeply aware of her purpose and it's so inspiring - I got a little emotional during this one. Revisiting this episode from 2018, tune in to hear a timely discussion on the importance of self-care. She's Sudanese-American and grew up in between cultures. We talk about how Sudanese women approach beauty, her relationship with her hair and how it changed when she got sick. Women's health and chronic illness is something that's not discussed often and so Aala is willing to talk about her private experience in detail – from the moment her hair kept falling out, getting rashes on her skin, experiencing chronic fatigue, migraines, muscle pain, etc. and then slowly rebuilding from there. We discuss the role of doctors verses a holistic approach, how her illness made her feel ugly for the first time in her life and how to handle a serious diagnosis. She discovered Dr. Sebi and began implementing these holistic principles to create a cleanse. An elimination diet addressed her gut/digestive issues. Aala explains how she compliments herself to feel empowered and how minding your business, drinking water are her top beauty tips!Links to Products/Resources Mentioned: Dr. Sebi, I am The Cleanse, Macrobiotic Bowl , Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, Coffee Grounds Body Scrub Recipe,Raw Honey + Avocado + Blueberry Mask,
Urdu audio book of Tafeem ul Quran. Surah Surahe At-Aala Rokoo 01
Urdu audio book of Tafeem ul Quran. Surah Surahe At-Aala introduction
The latest documentary film from Peabody Award-winning director Beth Aala, Made in Boise, looks at the world of modern day surrogacy. In the idyllic city of Boise, nurses, nail technicians, and stay-at-home mothers are choosing to become paid surrogates for people from around the world. Made in Boise offers a rare glimpse into this mysterious world by intimately following the lives of four surrogates, as they build relationships with the intended parents, prepare for the rigors of pregnancy, and navigate the mixed feelings of their own families, who struggle to understand their choice to risk the physical and emotional complications of carrying babies for someone else. Legal in some states and illegal in others, a number of states, including Idaho, have no laws governing surrogacy on their books at all. As the number of surrogate births surge across the country, Boise has become an epicenter of the movement, with a large population of healthy women of reproductive age and a significant number of Mormon and Catholic communities who value large families. In this "City of Trees" with a population of a little over 200,000, it is estimated that one in 15 mothers will carry a baby for a stranger at some point in her life. For couples who struggle with infertility, for gay couples, and single men, this industry — outlawed in many countries around the world — is often the last resort to biological parenthood. Director Beth Aala (Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman )joins us to talk about challenges and rewards of surrogacy for the the women who bear the children and the intended parents. Today’s show highlights a fascinating PBS documentary, which premieres just a few days from now. It’s made by a dear friend of mine and covers an intriguing phenomenon taking place in Boise, Idaho. Beth Aala is a three-time Emmy Award-winning producer and Peabody Award winner for her documentary work at HBO. Her most recent documentary is Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman, which she co-directed and produced. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017. Beth is here to discuss her new documentary that will air on PBS on October 28, so check your local listings for more information. The film is called Made In Boise, and it highlights the incredible, booming surrogacy industry that has emerged in Boise, Idaho. Beth shares her approach to the film, the relationships she witnesses, the politics of surrogacy, and the number of strong feelings and opinions brought on by this topic. I believe it’s important for women to see and hear stories about women that are made by women. Beth has built her successful career around the creation of these stories. You're gonna love the talent, conviction and compassion of my guests today.First up is Beth Aala, a three-time Emmy award-winning producer & recipient of a Peabody Award for her documentary work at HBO. She also directed & produced, Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon (A&E IndieFilms) with comedian, Mike Myers. It won the Hollywood Film Award for Best Documentary & was nominated for the 2015 News & Documentary Emmy Awards.Beth recently completed her latest feature documentary, Made in Boise about a surprising surrogacy industry in Boise, Idaho. It had its world premiere at AFI Docs Film Festival in June 2019 and is screening it at the upcoming Woodstock Film Festival on October 4th and 5th. You can purchase tickets here. Not in the Hudson Valley, not available this weekend? Made in Boise will have a broadcast premiere on PBS' award winning Independent Lens on October 28th at 10pm eastern.Amongst other things, I get to chat with Beth about her film career, working at MTV, what it was like working at HBO with so many talented women, how a close friend asked her to be her surrogate after years of trying to conceive and how that coupled with a friend working in Boise led her to the subject matter of this latest film. I urge you to watch this fascinating documentary about a subject that is well worth a longer conversation.During the second half of the show I get to sit down with Lady Moon of Lady Moon & The Eclipse, a multicultural ensemble based in New York. Through soaring vocal textures and R&B/afrobeat-influenced rhythms, they create inspirational music that explore the cosmic soul; a journey to become one's best self. Lady Moon carries the essence of the Moon, delivering a message of love, peace, and light, while the musicians serve as the Sun shining light upon her. The audience represents the Earth, also known as the Star People of Earth, completing the metaphorical eclipse. With a marked emphasis on inclusivity and spiritual unity, Lady Moon & The Eclipse explore positive music through the live experience to grow and make a difference in themselves and in the world.Lady Moon and I talk about how she became Lady Moon, her parents, how they shaped who she is, making music, relationship through her musical collaborations, the moon, the sun, the cosmic soul, and becoming free. She's a woman full of deep wisdom and sincere love. I can't wait to catch her and her "star-mates" at the upcoming O+ Festival on Friday, October 11th from 9-10pm in the back of BSP in Kingston, NY. And stay tuned for news on the release of a new single coming later in October! Thanks for tuning in friends!Today's show was engineered by Maddy Bogner of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.We heard music from Lady Moon and the Eclipse and our fave, Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.orgLeave me a voicemail with your thoughts or a few words about who has what you want and why! Aala is a very special person who's been able to self-heal and overcome a lot. Only 26, she's deeply aware of her purpose and it's so inpspring - I got a little emotional during this one. We also get into accessible beauty - you don't have to have a $75 jade roller to practice self-car (but she's got nothing against jade rollers, so get your roll on if it suits you). Aala explains how she compliments herself to feel empowered and how minding your business, drinking water are her top beauty tips! -----Things/Products Mentioned:Dr. Sebi (big proponent of self-healing through natural remedies): https://drsebiscellfood.com/Aala's Book 'I am The Cleanse' https://aalacleanse.com/cleansematerials/iamthecureMacrobiotic bowl - my go to healthy dinner: https://www.brit.co/macro-bowls/Almond oil, Jojoba oil after she exfoliates: https://www.amazon.com/Desert-Essence-Organic-Jojoba-Oil/dp/B0000C0XL8?th=1https://www.amazon.com/NOW-Solutions-Sweet-Almond-16-Ounce/dp/B0019LVFSUGround coffee beans to exfoliate DIY recipes at the link:https://www.onegreenplanet.org/lifestyle/diy-beauty-projects-you-can-mix-up-with-used-coffee-grounds/Raw honey and avocado blueberry mask - your skin is your biggest organ so she does natural masks to nourish her skinhttps://www.stylecraze.com/articles/8-amazing-blueberry-face-masks-for-radiant-skin/#grefManuka honey - next level honey https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/manuka-honey-medicinal-uses-----Follow Aala https://www.instagram.com/aalaofficial/Follow the cleanse https://www.instagram.com/aalacleanse/Follow the cleanse at @aalacleanseStay in touch with the #nakedbeautypodcast community: https://www.instagram.com/nakedbeautyplanet/Follow me @Brookedevard https://www.instagram.com/brookedevard/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Coming from a non-profit household, Aala was born in Sudan prior to immigrating to the United States and growing up in Chicago, Illinois. As the daughter of an economist, Aala grew up in a household where her father dedicated his life to caring for others. Due to this, Aala seeks to use media as a means of uplifting others through education and health. As the creator of her self-entitled Aala Cleanse, Aala was able to heal herself of an autoimmune disease by learning more about the human body, ancient African herbs, and gut health. In this episode of our Driven Minds Podcast, Aala talks with us about overcoming her autoimmune disease, battling negative thoughts, and The Aala Cleanse. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/drivensocietypodcast/support

When two Sachin fans get together to talk about Him, you might expect a rather one sided conversation, but Aditya surprised me with his take on the recent unintended controversy that Sachin kicked off in the midst of his 20 years of international cricket which was spiced up a little bit with his seemingly innocent and matter of fact remark about Mumbai being a part of India and that it belongs to everyone equally. In other news, in the assembly elections, MNS MLAs beat up Abu Azmi for not taking his oath in Marathi. In Bihar, relief cheque from the state government to certain mishap victims bounced.
