He holds an MBA from INSEAD and worked for Stryker and McKinsey before starting Kyan Health in 2021.Vlad's interest in the topic of mental health and wellness came about as the result of a crisis he himself had during his time at McKinsey. After experiencing a panic attack, he sought medical care and took 4 weeks off work. When he returned, he decided to film a short video explaining what had happened to him, which he shared with coworkers who inquired about his absence. The video went viral within the organization and Vlad was then asked to create an employee wellbeing program, which would later become the blueprint for Kyan Health.Using predictive analytics, Kyan helps companies monitor and reduce risks like absenteeism, turnover, and presenteeism. Notable clients like Hitachi Energy, Hilti, STADA, Deutsche Börse Group, and On have already seen tangible results. Vlad and his team have worked hard to make their tool a trustworthy source of help for employees around the globe, not only by making the app GDPR-compliant but also by making every profile completely anonymous. This ensures employee cooperation and also allows Kyan Health to still derive insights at an organizational level.Kyan Health was recently awarded the High Potential Label by SEF.Growth.Resources Mentioned:Inside TimerThe cover portrait was edited by www.smartportrait.ioDon't forget to give us a follow on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. Trevor Owen is the Reality Capture Manager at Rogers Obrien. Trevor shared his background including time at a smaller electrical contractor and Hilti - leading up to his current role at RO. Trevor's experiences implementing BIM and VDC workflows, including the "birthing pains" he spoke of, all gave him great insight to see the value reality capture can add. Trevor talked about how he saw that BIM and VDC needed to be connected to the real world more tangibly. Trevor saw peoples engagement with technology swing like a pendulum when they could see the value fist hand. We spoke as well about how AI, Robotics, and reality capture will actually help us spend less time in front of screens at the end of the day.
In dieser Folge treffe ich mich mit Sebastian Thieß, Business Coach der Hilti AG. Gleichzeitig ist er Sherpa im Unternehmen – was das bedeutet, erklärt er im Verlauf unseres Gesprächs.
A durable and long-lasting product is a promising starting point for circular activities. Yet organisational challenges remain. In this episode, Caroline Stern gives insights into Hilti Group's challenges when measuring and improving its circularity. It starts with logistics, spans over accounting, and includes selecting the right input data for ERP systems designed for a linear world. This episode is the 12th in the series PaaS Decoded, 16 conversations about the fine details of product-as-a-service.
Hilti robots --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/david-nishimoto/message
On this episode of The Construction Record Podcast™, digital media editor Warren Frey looks at the role of robotics in construction with DPR Construction robotics lead Henning Roedel and Rogers-O'Brien Construction chief innovation officer Todd Wynne from the World of Concrete conference in Las Vegas. Wynne and Roedel spoke to the many ways the construction industry is already utilizing robotics along with new innovations such as Hilti's JaiBot drilling robot, which drills over the shoulder holes and spares workers injury and exposure to silica, as well as the Dusty Robotics Fieldprinter, a “Roomba with a printer” as Wynne called it that plots lines across real-world floors. They also spoke to the role of robotics in not only drawing in younger workers but also allowing older workers to work in new ways and preserve their decades of experience. Wynne and Roedel also talked about how interest in robotics and technological innovation is rising throughout the industry as well as outside of it, as new sources of investment come to construction fueling more startups and innovation designed to automate and digitize the worksite. We'll be on the ground at the World of Concrete from Jan. 23 to Jan 25., and you can listen to our previous World of Concrete episode, watch our Daily Commercial News, Journal of Commerce and Construction Record Linkedin sites along with the DCN, JOC and Construction Record Podcast Twitter accounts, as well as daily Reels on our Instagram feed. In this week's episode of the Propcast, Louisa is joined by Emanuel Heisenberg, CEO and Founder of EcoWorks, and Mauricio Weiss, GP and Founding Partner of Zacua Ventures where they discuss all things renovation, regulation and innovation. With 40% of emissions being used on buildings and 20% on materials, the guests delve into the short- and long-term costs of going carbon neutral and whether it is a realistic goal with today's current economic climate. The guests discuss how an increase in sustainability pressure, paired with geopolitical instability and labour scarcity are a handful of the challenges that accompany reaching net zero targets. Emanuel shares how the EcoWork's product can help tackle key issues around scarcity of labour and materials from factories, whilst Mauricio discusses the trends he has seen with his portfolio companies in terms of increasing their sales. Companies mentioned MIPIM JLL Spark Shoutouts Vivin Hegde Arnaud Bouzinac Robert Habeck Josh Levy, Document Crunch Previous episodes mentioned The evolution of global construction technologies Episode Highlights Regulation is actually pushing for a lot of technology adoption in terms of higher requirements, and these requirements just make the processes much more complex, right? - Mauricio So they really tackle the 80 percent renewable energy goal for 2030 and they really decarbonize the heating system with good and aggressive regulations. - Emanuel The construction sector invests 1 percent in R&D and the housing sector 0.1%. So, they will not bring any transformation towards affordability and decarbonization. - Emanuel You do need regulators – to start pointing the marketing to the right direction, but you also want to keep competitiveness and ensure a free environment and a secure environment to make investments and to see the return of these investments. - Mauricio Investors and a lot of stakeholders are questioning whether this is the right moment to be investing in technologies or an economic turn that will potentially slow down the piece of adoption for technology - Mauricio Previous episodes mentioned The Evolution Of Global Construction Technologies Key Takeaways The use of circular building materials in helping companies reach net zero targets The need for common standards across Europe, as well as the challenges that this would bring due to difference in buildings and needs for each country The need for regulators to be very close to investors in sharing short term and long-term goals of decarbonisation and technology adoption How to position certain aspects of ESG to pitch to create sustainable competitive advantage for that company without changing the core of your business Emmanuel shares some advice about the German market for founders looking to expand The lack of construction companies in Germany About our guests Emanuel Heisenberg Emanuel Heisenberg studied history and economics in Munich and Cambridge. He has over 15 years of experience in setting up and developing companies for renewable energies and ESCO and has contributed to more than 50 energy projects. His international network includes numerous funds, utility companies, IPPs, entrepreneurs, and research institutions. After founding a contracting and geothermal energy company, he established ecoworks in 2019, introducing the concept of serial renovation to Germany. An initial pilot project in Hameln proved challenging but was also a significant success. The renovated buildings there have demonstrably achieved NetZero levels. In addition to his role as CEO and founder, he is also active as a speaker and expert in energy and climate policy, advising the German federal government, companies, and private equity funds in the fields of heating and energy efficiency. In 2020, together with journalist Georg Diez, he co-wrote a book on the significance of technology in reinventing democracy (Power To The People: How We Reinvent Democracy with Technology). Ecoworks ecoworks develops end-to-end software and prefabricated elements to turn apartment buildings with significant renovation backlog into attractive and climate-neutral living spaces in just a few weeks. In this way, the company is making a significant contribution to rapidly reducing emissions in the building sector and the dependence on fossil fuels. ecoworks is an innovation leader in a market that will unleash enormous investment volumes in the wake of national and European legislative initiatives and rising energy and CO2 prices. Around 45 million residential units in Europe are located in buildings with the worst energy ratings. In addition to regulation, these will be particularly burdened by high CO2 prices, which will become mandatory for the building sector soon. Comparable regulations are already planned or in effect in parts of the US and Asia. The Berlin-based company developed the technology in Germany and is currently bringing it to the mass market with several projects. The company is considered one of the most innovative providers of Climate Tech in the building sector worldwide. Mauricio Weiss Mauricio is GP and Founding Partner of Zacua Ventures, a global Venture Capital fund focused in the construction industry. Mauricio works closely with entrepreneurs in the industry to support the adoption of new technologies and improve productivity and sustainability on construction projects. His background working in a large construction company first and at the CVC of Cemex later taught him what is needed for a successful implementation of technology and the right approach for startups engaging large corporates. Zacua Ventures Zacua Ventures is an early stage fund focused on the Built Environment. With three GPs based in San Francisco, Madrid and Singapore, the fund has a global focus and each of the founders come with a proven track record, having led 30+ investments in the corporate funds in Cemex Ventures and HILTI. The fund has raise over $55m USD, to invest in Pre-Seed to Series A startups that focus on 3 main areas in the construction industry: Sustainability, Enhanced Productivity & Safety and Urbanization Solutions. He is also responsible for managing and training Pond's Bluebeam users and for helping those users develop time-saving workflows. Steve Smith entered the construction industry straight out of high school as a laborer for a general contractor. He held positions at Leica Geosystems and Hilti before joining Bluebeam, where he now works as Director of Partnerships. In this role, Steve looks for ways to expand the use of Bluebeam workflows through integrations with other technologies used by AEC professionals. 03:50 - Better Use of BluebeamPatrick gives us a brief overview of Pond & Company, which is on the large end of the spectrum, and we acknowledge that Eddie will be today's representative from a small company. Tyler explains that our goal today is to save listeners some time, so he asks Patrick to kick us off with some of his favorite Bluebeam tools.Compare PDFs - This tool superimposes two versions of a layout.Cloud PDFs - This tool backs up changes to the cloud.Search - This tool can be used to locate and then strike-through words that become irrelevant in new versions. Tyler mentions that the history of those changes is stored for future reference.Tyler shares about his experience as a detailer dealing with the numerous tweaks that occurred while he was working on a series of Wawa gas stations. Patrick mentions that the alignment function would have helped with those problems.11:30 - Custom ToolsPatrick talks about how easy it is for users to create their own tools and then to organize those into a toolkit. Eddie talks about the sketching tools and lines that he uses, and Scott refers to how central that feature has come for some fabricators. We discuss metadata and filenames. Patrick explains how Bluebeam folder structures can increase the fluidity of the design and communication processes. Even on a small team, Eddie explains that thoughtful training helps to keep a team's button layouts consistent. 20:10 - DashboardsPatrick talks about how the dashboards feature enables you to create buttons that open any file on your computer, take you to any website on the Internet, or goes directly to any folder on your hard drive or server. These buttons can then be saved as a dashboard template that others can use on their computer. Eddie explains that this versatility all the way up to the managerial level is one of the reasons that he loves Bluebeam. He asks Patrick to take us through the process of creating a dashboard, and he does so. He has gone so far as to develop entire landing pages for all of the departments in his company. 27:27 - StudioPatrick discusses the two features within Studio: -Projects allows you to upload a file of any type and share it with team members. -Sessions allows you to upload entire PDFs–even large ones–that multiple people can then edit simultaneously.-The creation of custom statuses that can then be color-cEddie shares his own experience with sharing of files and sessions even with people who don't have Bluebeam. Steve talks through the extent to which that kind of sharing can take place. 37:55 - Field ReportsPatrick talks about using iPads during site visits. He uses voice-to-text to add notes on the PDF. These notes can then be synced up when he gets back to the office. These changes can then be compiled into a report to communicate changes to the relevant parties.40:15 - Right-click Apply All PagesPatrick shares this one final tip that you'll want to use at the end of a long day. Episode Highlights: How Antonia and Vivin both met whilst working at Hilti The Women in Construction Tech Group that Antonia has co-founded The events and chapters WCT are running How Zacua Ventures started and where the idea came from Vivin's advice to founders looking to scale towards an exit The evolution Vivin believes early startups need to go through in order to be successful The challenges around digitising construction and how Antonia suggests these are addressed The importance of understanding what it's actually like to work in construction when trying to build a solution Where Antonia and Vivin expect to see investment being made in 2023 The difference in investments between early stage and late stage The reasons why interest in Series B is quieter in terms of investment How construction technologies are helping with sustainability The technologies being developed to address prefabrication and modular construction Resources: LMRE Global Recruitment and Search Consultancy LMRE YouTube Interviews PropTech Salary Report, LMRE 2022 WCT McKinsey Fieldwire Dusty Robotics Built World Trimble Ecoworks Carbon Title Urban Machine Kit Switch Shout outs: Gregg Wallace Mauricio Tessi Weiss Juan Nieto Julieta Moradei Key Takeaways: And this is where the seeds of Zacua Ventures were sewn, right? We had built a network, we'd seen how hard corporate innovation is for a lot of corporates, and we are also invested in funds. - Vivin So a startup needs to be mindful of the exit options that they have. They shouldn't be driven by the exit itself. - Vivin I find that founders that spend a lot of time with customers in the field and in the office come up with the best solutions. Because they are observing workflows, testing solutions on the job site and otherwise learning how their solution can best serve their customers. - Antonia So women in construction tech, it's dedicated to creating opportunities and developing relationships for women driving innovation in the construction industry. We envision a construction industry where women are well networked, support each other, efforts to improve and advance in the space and otherwise. - Antonia We did a survey of 80 contact focused VCs and corporate VCs a couple of weeks back. Just a little bit of the industry, I would say, and it's positive. We do see more investment happening in this space. Pretty much 70% of the VCs we spoke to said they're going to increase their investment rather than decrease in this space. - Vivin I think everybody has a good view of how the market could look in the next 6, 12, 18 months. Even if it's not rosy, it's still more predictable than it was five months back. And therefore the deal flow should pick up slowly and the deal making should also pick up accordingly. - Vivin About Our Host Louisa Dickins Louisa is the co-founder of LMRE, which has rapidly become the market leading global PropTech recruitment platform and search consultancy with operations across North America, United Kingdom, Europe and Asia-Pacific. In the third episode of Season 11 of the Propcast, host Louisa Dickins is joined by Gregg Wallace, Partner at Building Ventures, who invest in companies reshaping the way we design, build, operate and experience our built environment and Matt Wegworth, Vice President of Dawson Ventures at McKinstry, whose goal is to advance early-stage technologies and offerings and support innovative startups. Episode Highlights: How Gregg as part of the Hilti Group invested in Building Ventures first funding round How they have now launched Fund 2 and the different strategic partners this will bring onboard The growth they have seen in the market and what it means for their organisation The synergies between Building Ventures and McKinstry and why they started working together as strategic partners The tagline that McKinstry work by and how that benefits their clients Why Dawson Ventures was created The stage and ticket size that both companies invest in and trends they follow The different areas of growth they are seeing, despite the economic situation The importance of having a go to market plan in the construction and proptech space Gregg and Matt's ideas for generating more innovation and adoption within the industry Their view on the best ways to attract new talent into construction technologies The battle the industry has between efficiencies and innovation Resources: LMRE Global Recruitment and Search Consultancy LMRE YouTube Interviews PropTech Salary Report, LMRE 2022 ALICE Technologies ICON A/O PropTech Report Hilti Group Assemble System Autodesk Financial Times ENR 400 TurboTax BuiltWorlds Conference Shout outs: Mayra Soto Vivin Hegde Key Takeaways: We appreciated as Hilti the ecosystem that Building Ventures brought, so we made an investment in mid 2018, alongside a whole number of strategic investors as part of Building Ventures first fund, which launched in 2018 as $53 million and placed 16 startup portfolio companies. - Gregg That's what we also represent as Building Ventures, looking at how do we create a fundamentally better built world? Not the transaction side of buying and selling and dividing buildings into crypto coins, but really creating a fundamentally better built world, connecting the historically disparate phases of the building lifecycle. - Gregg What that does for us here and certainly for our clients is it brings a suite of thinking and offering to drive that desire to how do we remove the waste and climate harm out of the environment through innovation, so that it has 60 years of operation. - Matt We believe by keeping really close to the industry, we can be very supportive. At the early seed stage, getting to know founders, making introductions, helping them think through strategically the problems. - Gregg This is not a one-time transaction. This is the start of a five to 10 year relationship through all of its ups and downs that we want to support our portfolio company. - Gregg So do we see a slowdown? Not at all. Are we continuing to invest in our own startups? Absolutely. - Matt About Our Host Louisa Dickins Louisa is the co-founder of LMRE, which has rapidly become the market leading global PropTech recruitment platform and search consultancy with operations across North America, United Kingdom, Europe and Asia-Pacific. In today's episode of Women In Supply Chain, I'm joined by Ashley Yentz, a supply chain leader who is passionate about driving sustainability and creating solutions that improve lives. Ashley discovered her love for supply chain during several successful internships at automotive megabrand, Toyota. And, after a stint as a logistics analyst at Hilti, Ashley's career really took flight at LeanCor Supply Chain Group. She developed, implemented, and managed lean supply chains totalling around $300M in annual transportation spend and, in 2021, she brought all of her experience, knowledge and passion to her current role as VP of Supply Chain and Material Flow at Sleep Number, a leader in sleep and wellness technology. Today Ashley will be talking to us about her career so far; her passion for creating a more inclusive workforce; developing customer-focused solutions; and why her ultimate goal is to influence a priority shift toward climate change and social consciousness in the logistics and supply chain industry. Plus, she'll be sharing her experiences as a woman in supply chain, as well as her words of advice for all of the women following in her footsteps. SHOW SPONSOR: This Women in Supply Chain feature was sponsored by Sifted. As a business dedicated to empowering confidence within the shipping industry, we're proud to support women in supply chain. Sifted is the leading logistics intelligence software, that combines insights with expertise to empower bigger, smarter shipping decisions. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [07.09] Ashley's career journey, from being raised by creative entrepreneurs and gaining a degree in mathematics, to being introduced to supply chain by a mentor. “I met one of my mentors, she was the Vice President of Customer Service at Toyota… and she was the one that looked at me, heard about my skillset in math and my passions and said ‘hey – I think you'd be really good in supply chain!'” [11.28] What Ashley learned during her time working for Toyota. “I understood the great care that we had to take to make sure a customer was satisfied. Lean is about ‘what is it that this customer really wants, and how do we make sure we're providing them the best value.'” [16.55] Ashley's journey within Toyota, from strategic planning to inventory; how the recession led to a move to Hilti; and why a passion for Lean Systems eventually took her to LeanCor. “I started doing a lot of research on ‘what do I want to do, where do I want to be, where do I want to spend my time?'" [23.01] Ashley's experience of being one of only two female senior leaders at LeanCor, and the importance of finding people that value what you have to say. “When we talk about career growth and development, seeking to understand is such a huge part of anyone's job, and it will set you apart.” [28.03] Why Ashley moved to Sleep Number, her advice on finding the right career fit, and why Sleep Number values wellness. “You have to be surrounded by a community that you're enjoying, that is getting the best out of you and you feel your best at, where you can bring your authentic self to work... you have to make sure it's aligning to you and your life.” [35.21] Ashley's biggest career achievements to date. [38.03] Ashley's experience as a woman in the male-dominated fields of construction, supply chain and automotive, how she built courage over time and her advice for how women can thrive. [42.59] Ashley's favorite thing about supply chain. “My favorite thing about supply chain is that you can learn so much – you'll never get bored!” [44.15] Ashley's thoughts on the importance of sustainability in supply chain. “I believe that profit and sustainability go hand in hand.” RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED: You can connect with Ashley over on LinkedIn. Before we go any further, here are three movie scenes that we refer to in today's discussion. If you haven't seen these in a while, you might want to refresh your memory: Billy Madison milk scene Cousin Eddie and his RV Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker Now that you're properly equipped to follow along, let's talk about BIM! Trevor Owen is a BIM guy. Some hail him as the BIM Guru, but sometimes it's just BIM Boy. Specifically, he's the BIM specialist for Hilti. Today we hear Trevor's thoughts about the influence of BIM on the construction industry. We start out with some light Christmas-related banter and an introduction to our guest star, Ralph, Jr. Check out the Youtube version of this episode to see Ralph. Trevor shares how Hilti aims to cut across business units in order to look at business's entire work flows. They want to be a productivity partner and solutions provider. We discuss the need for this increased form of efficiency and consolidation because “you can't throw people at problems anymore. You can't find the people.” Hilti's BIM efforts are focused on model maturity: “If we're going to leave it in the building, it should be in the model because we have to buy it.” They want to envision and plan the entire process, from prefab all the way to delivery. Trevor explains that the goal is not just to include more detail but to include more attributes and then process estimates from that. As a construction guy, Eddie raises some concerns he has with certain aspects of BIM, and we explore those. Trevor calls upon Billy Madison to explain that when it comes to means and methods, there's sometimes a dynamic that asks “Who owns it?” He says we need to move from “What's in it for me?” to “What's in it for us?” Eddie speaks up to express his desire for greater automation in the BIM process We discuss the challenges of finding the right people to fill design positions and then to train and retain them. Trevor says “constructability knowledge” is an important skill. Hilti offers a BIM Masterclass that involves 15 weeks of training, culminating in a closing week in The Netherlands. Eddie and Tyler compare Hilti's training timeline to Tyler's as a detailer. Eddie says it was seven years before he was able to declare Tyler “mature” as a detailer (not necessarily mature as a person.) Eddie points out that BIM is increasingly functioning as the database that we use with automated construction processes. Trevor's Megaphone Message: The construction industry has never been as fun as it is now. Construction is fun and has a lasting effect on our children's lives and their children's lives. Welcome to Reimagining Company Culture, a series discussing emerging trends and priorities shaping the future of workplace culture and employee wellbeing. We highlight thought leaders who are constantly evolving their strategy and can provide insight to folks about how to address new business challenges. AllVoices is on a mission to create safe, happy, and healthy workplaces for all, and we're excited to learn from experts who share our mission. In this episode of Reimagining Company Culture, we're chatting with Elle Lebourg, Senior Director, People Engagement at Hilti and Ann-Maree Harrison, Head of Social Impact at Hilti. Elle Lebourg manages Hilti's team member engagement and retention efforts. Ann-Maree Harrison manages Hilti's North American Community Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility efforts.Tune in to learn Elle Lebourg and Ann-Maree Harrison's thoughts on the role of private employers, creating partnerships between people engagement and social impact teams, redesigning spaces to be more equitable, and more!About AllVoices In today's workforce, people often don't feel empowered to speak up and voice their opinions about workplace issues, including harassment, bias, and other culture issues. This prevents company leadership from making necessary changes, and prevents people from feeling fulfilled, recognized, and included at work. At AllVoices, we want to change that by providing a completely safe, anonymous way for people to report issues directly to company leaders. This allows company leadership real transparency into what's happening in their companies—and the motivation to address issues quickly. Our goal is to help create safer, more inclusive companies.
