Top shot © Ron Tarver Cowboy lore has deep roots in American culture. Yet, black cowboys have lived pretty much under the radar until recently, when songs by pop culture icons Lil Nas X and Beyoncé went viral and catapulted the black western aesthetic into the limelight. In today's show, we're getting the inside scoop from two photographers who've been fully immersed in these vibrant communities since long before they became a top fashion trend. Separated by a generation in age and with pictures spanning from film to digital, we follow Ron Tarver and Ivan McClellan from their early years in Oklahoma and Kansas, to the urban stables of Northern Philadelphia, the legendary Roy LeBlanc Rodeo in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and beyond. Listen in and discover how the popularity of a single newspaper assignment led Ron to the pages of National Geographic and a career defining body of work. In a similar manner, Ivan's hunch to act on a chance invitation morphed into a passion project that reconnected him to his midwestern roots and ultimately expanded his role from photographer to that of an entrepreneur and rodeo boss.  Ever wonder about the funding and stamina required to compete as a rodeo athlete? We take that bull by the horns at the end of the show. Guests: Ron Tarver & Ivan McClellan Episode Timeline: 4:09: Ron Tarver and Ivan McClellan's early memories of cowboy culture during their respective youths in Kansas City and Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. 9:19: Ron's early story for the Philadelphia Inquirer and his subsequent documentation of black cowboy culture. 15:06: The camera gear and film stock Ron used for his pictures, plus digitizing analog slides using a digital camera, macro lens and bellows system. 20:15: Technical limitations Ron faced when shooting film, and his editing process when working with National Geographic. 23:19: Ivan's start as a designer, his introduction to photography and the world of black cowboys, and his shooting process at the rodeo. 33:40: The dominance of women within black rodeos, a female horse whisperer, and tips for photographing horses in a rodeo context. 44:34: Episode Break 45:35: The journey behind our guest's respective books, and Ron's collaboration with a noted editor to create The Long Ride Home. 51:19: The back story to Ivan's book—from a self-published Kickstarter release to the editor he worked with to get Eight Seconds published by Damiani. 57:10: Ivan and Ron discuss each other's finished book projects, questions about model releases, plus the current hunger for black cowboy culture.  1:05:23: Ivan's work to promote black rodeo athletes and the economics of competing in this arena. 1:10:39: How Ivan's life has changed since founding the Eight Seconds rodeo in Portland, Oregon. 1:16:04: The impact of Ivan's work on the lives of rodeo athletes, and the maximum number of bulls a rodeo athlete can ride in a single day.  Guest Bios: Ron Tarver was born and raised in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, and is now based outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During 32 years as a staffer at The Philadelphia Inquirer, he was nominated for three Pulitzer's and shared the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for public service, in addition to many other accolades. Tarver's photographs have been exhibited internationally. His pictures can be found in private, corporate, and museum collections, and have appeared in major publications both in print and online.  In 2004, he co-authored the book We Were There: Voices of African American Veterans, published by Harper Collins, accompanied by a traveling exhibition. A recipient of a 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2001 Pew Fellowship in the Arts, Tarver has also received funding from the NEA, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and an Independence Foundation Fellowship.  He currently serves as Associate Professor of Art at Swarthmore College. His book, The Long Ride Home: Black Cowboys in America was released by George F Thompson Publishers in September. Ivan McClellan is a photojournalist and designer originally from Kansas City, Missouri. These days he calls Portland, Oregon home.  His work reveals marginalized aspects of black culture, challenging broad assumptions and myths about racial identity in America.  His project Eight Seconds, focuses on elevating narratives about American Black cowboys, and transforming the culture of the American West by ‘re-centering' black women and men back as an integral part of our historical narrative.  After initially self-publishing his photos in book form, Eight Seconds: Black Rodeo Culture was released by Damiani books in April 2024. The winner of the 2022 Getty Inclusion grant, McClellan's photos have been presented in and collected by Museums and cultural spaces across the United States. His work has also been featured in ESPN: The Undefeated and Fast Company.  As an experience designer for Adobe Lightroom, he has led projects for Nike, Adidas, Disney, and the U.S. National Soccer Team. And most recently, he founded the Eight Seconds Rodeo in 2023. This week we welcome Goldwing Express! Goldwing Express is a Bluegrass, Country and Gospel band that is originally from Okmulgee, Oklahoma. The band consists of three brothers and their father. Their mother, Juanita, who was a full-blood Native American Creek Indian, named the band "Goldwing Express" after their hobby of riding Goldwing Motorcycles in the 80's. When their children were young, they decided to buy the boys instruments. Thirty-nine years later, they are still entertaining. A segment of their performance is often dedicated to their Indian Heritage and they wear Native American headdress to represent their Creek Indian tribe. In Nashville, Tennessee, Goldwing Express was nominated for Bluegrass Entertaining Band of the Year by SPBGMA (Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America) from 2003-2006 and in South Texas won the Valley Star Family Entertaining Band of the Year in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas for 4 years. Bob Baldridge, the patriarch of the family, plays mandolin and sings lead for the group. He also provides a lot of the comedy for Goldwing Express. His music career began in the early 70's with his brothers and sister. The family would gather at their grandmother's house and have all-day singings. Bob eventually wanted to form his own family band. Then came Paul, Steven and Shawn. You can check out their website: www.GoldwingExpress.net. "Two young girls gunned down on a beautiful June day" is a headline we, Americans, are all too familiar with. However, most people would be shocked to discover that the brutal slayings occurred along a tree-lined dirt road in America's heartland. "That type of violence doesn't happen here," or "We moved to the country to get away from this type of thing," is what we often hear after such a violent act occurs. And indeed, those were the very emotions that locals expressed in June of 2008, when eleven-year-old Skyla Jade Whitaker and her best friend, thirteen-year-old Taylor Dawn Paschal-Placker, were shot thirteen times while walking home from the creek on a beautiful June afternoon.Police would work on solving the young girl's murder for three years without any luck. It would take the disappearance and murder of 23-year-old Ashley Taylor to lead police to Skyla's and Taylor's killer.Join Cam and Jen as they discuss "Bad Creek Bridge: Taylor Paschal-Placker, Skyla Whitaker, and Ashley Taylor."Promo from our friend Bob Motta of Defense Diaries. Part 1 Nuclear Colonialism with Leona Morgan (Dine' Nation) is a three-part interview broadcasting over three consecutive episodes. The series focuses on our guest's community work since 2007, which includes combating against many aspects of nuclear colonialism. Our guest not only helped prevent the construction of a new ISL (in situ leach) uranium mine in Eastern Navajo, but also, she has and continues to raise awareness about the extreme dangers of transporting high-level radioactive waste material by highway and railroad nearby & through “Indian Country,” along with the negative legacy of uranium mining & its unresolved impacts on the Dine' & other Indigenous peoples. In addition, Leona Morgan provides an update on the unresolved issue of nuclear waste & how Holtec International is proposing to construct a high-level nuclear waste facility in southeastern New Mexico despite the opposition by numerous Native American nations. Moreover, our guest discusses: the Nuclear Energy industry's plans to build Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) – mini nuclear reactors - as a way to generate electricity' how the Nuclear Energy's Greenwashing strategy of claiming nuclear energy as green energy places Indigenous peoples and Mother Earth at historical perils; the $1.7 trillion allocated for the US nuclear weaponry arsenal, and how Native Americans & nations future generations are at risk unless there is an immediate nuclear decolonialization. Guest Leona Morgan (Tó dich'íí'nii, Tsé nahabiłnii, Kiyaa'áanii, Tó aheedlíinii) is a Diné activist and community organizer. Leona co-founded and works with the Nuclear Issues Study Group , Diné No Nukes, which contributes to the Haul No! initiative, and Radiation Monitoring Project. Our guest collaborates nationally with many groups and is part of the international campaign Don't Nuke The Climate that focuses on nuclear energy as a global climate issue. Part 2 In early 2023, only five Native American nations have constitutionally protected press freedoms. In terms of Native American self-determination and sovereignty, what does freedom of the press mean for Native American nations? What about Native American government owned media and the right to investigate & publish critical stories without being penalized? On this episode I chatted with C4 and Scott Mabrey of Mabrey Bank. The Mabrey family's ownership of the bank is a story that began long before it became the community bank people know today. The Mabrey family has been involved in banking since 1906, when G. W. Mabrey served on the Board of Directors for Citizens National Bank of Okmulgee. In 1909, Carlisle Mabrey Sr. became a teller and assistant cashier for the bank. He worked at the bank for many years and in 1943 was named Chairman of the Board. Carlisle Mabrey Jr. bought a controlling interest in the bank in 1966 and became President and Chairman of the Board that same year. After acquiring Citizens Security Bank and Trust Company in Bixby, founded in 1924, the Mabrey family combined the organizations in 2004 bringing together two strong community banks that had been serving Oklahomans for nearly 180 combined years. The Mabrey family has continued expanding since then, adding several locations in Tulsa and Oklahoma City to help us better serve communities across Oklahoma. www.mabreybank.com  This episode is presented by the following sponsors. A story of mixed metrics. Yes, the Omicron wave has receded significantly in the US over the past few weeks. But more people are dying every day than died during the peak of Delta last summer. 2,400 people have died every day over the past seven days even though cases are a third of what they were three weeks ago. As we've explained before, the reason is the sheer number of people infected with Omicron meeting the unvaccinated population. The CDC says unvaccinated adults have a 68-times-higher risk of dying from Covid than boosted adults. There are claims out on the always reliable Internet that in fact, most of the world is still unvaccinated. But data from the University of Oxford's Our World in Data project show more than 60% of the world's population have gotten at least one dose. 52.1% are fully vaccinated. The UAE and Portugal are most vaccinated at more than 90%, while Chad, Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Burundi have less than 1% of people fully vaccinated. The governors of four states announced plans to lift statewide mask requirements in schools by the end of February or March. Those states are Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, and Oregon. All indicated a need for acceptance that the virus is here to stay and there must be a path back to normalcy for kids. California is keeping its mask mandates for schools in place, but California is not extending its statewide indoor mask mandate. That means people who are vaccinated can show off their mouths starting February 15, the unvaccinated cannot. Los Angeles County, however, has its own stricter mask mandate in place that it will apparently keep in place no matter what the state does. Also in California, lawmakers passed legislation giving most workers up to two weeks of COVID supplemental paid sick leave. The idea is to fix it so infected people don't have to come to work and put everyone else at risk. The policy allows workers at businesses of 26 or more employees to take paid time off not just to recover from COVID, but to care for a sick family member, go get vaccinated, recover from immunization side effects, or care for a child who can't go to school because of closures or quarantines. In the United States, cases were down 57%, deaths are up 18%, and hospitalizations are down 24% over 14 days. The adapt as you learn process continues. The CDC is now considering new changes to vaccine guidance that'd lengthen how much time should pass between doses, and they're doing this to lower the risk of heart inflammation for immunocompromised people. They generally don't respond as well to vaccines, and they're the only ones right now advised to get four vaccine shots. What's happening with the pandemic in the US? One way to gauge is to see what's going on in New York City. Over 15 days, they've seen a decline of more than 60% in infection rates and new cases. Citywide transmission is now on the verge of falling below “very high” levels. Even the number of unvaccinated residents getting COVID has fallen significantly in recent weeks. 43.6% of all fully vaccinated city residents have gotten boosted. But there's another way to detect infection rates nationwide to see what's going on and it's the closest thing we have to involuntary mass testing. That, of course, is wastewater testing. And now there's a new online portal where you can check to see how your city is doing. Actually, the map only tracks 232 sites, but you can still tell what areas are trending. For instance, lots of COVID-in-waste levels going up now are in Ohio. You should be able to find the site by searching CDC Covid wastewater surveillance. Sadly, not everyone or everything will survive the pandemic. Among the casualties is the oldest pub in Britain, which has been open since 793 AD. The pub, called Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, tried everything to stay open. The owners and staff are said to be devastated and heartbroken. Whether or not China's zero tolerance policy on COVID is the right move remains to be seen, but one thing is pretty certain, some Olympic athletes are having a miserable experience there. Sweden has joined European nations removing coronavirus restrictions. The Prime Minister said, “It's time to open Sweden again.” And apparently that will happen February 9. People can go to restaurants with no limits on occupancy or operating hours, and requirements for vaccine certificates and masks on public transportation will also be gone. Russia is considering loosening some restrictions too, even though they're facing a record-breaking surge of infections. If you're on Medicare Part B, you've got free COVID tests coming, which you'll be able to get over the counter. Medicare will cover up to eight free tests every month, starting in early spring. That actually only now matches what private insurers have been required to provide to people on their plans, so the government is playing a bit of catchup. Again, people you may have been calling whack jobs for two years may have been right. Israeli scientists have gathered the most convincing evidence to date that upping levels of vitamin D does help protect COVID patients from serious illness or death. They say they can even predict how people will do if infected based just on their age and vitamin D levels. Vitamin D deficiency is endemic across the Middle East, including in Israel, where nearly four in five people are low on it. The Olympics are putting the spotlight on China, which for two years has been trying to keep the spotlight off of it, at least when it comes to the origins of the novel coronavirus. A group of international scientists is again calling for a "comprehensive international investigation" into COVID's origins. That's 20 scientists from the U.S., U.K., Germany, New Zealand, France, Australia, India, and Japan. Although Yolanda from Store 121 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, has them both beat at 35 years. But it's not a competition. Congrats to all three of you! Paul Compton and “Jackie” Floyd walked to grade school together in 1934. Their mothers, Clara and Ruby, rented rooms in the same boarding house in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Paul Compton was Princess Pennie's father. It was Pennie's grandmother, Clara, that answered the boarding house telephone on October 22, the night the bad news came. Paul Compton's friend, Jackie Dempsey Floyd, was interviewed on television twenty-eight years ago. Jackie was 68 years old at the time: “When I was born, I was born at my aunt's house – my mother's aunt – and it was during the wintertime, and my father went to the mirror with me and held me up to the side of his face and says, ‘Oh, look! He looks just like me!' And you know how kids will do their hands? I was doing my hands like that and he said, ‘Oh look, he's going be a fighter. We're going to call him Jack Dempsey.' But my mother wouldn't go for it. She went for part of the name, but I thought that was kind of nice, that he did that.” Jackie's father was born in 1904, three years before Oklahoma became a state, back when it was still called “Indian Territory.” “My father had a nice sense of humor. He'd always keep people laughing and everything. And in the short time I got to be with him, I got to know him pretty well. And he was always kidding around with my mother and everything, and keeping her laughing, and he'd cook for us. I remember one time he took me fishing. So we went up in the mountains somewhere to a lake, and we couldn't get the fish to bite, but it was a very clear lake and we could see them, and he said, ‘You know what we ought to do? We ought to shoot those fish, if we can't catch them.' So he let me shoot the gun into the water like we were going to shoot a fish, but we didn't get one, but he thought it was something I might like to do.” Jackie Floyd was born not many years and not many miles from where Mark Twain wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. “And my mother was always afraid that I was going to be kidnapped, for some reason or other, but anyhow, these larger boys had a pulley in one tree and it went down to another. And you could get up in this bucket and ride from one tree down to the other. Kind of like a carnival ride or something. It was fascinating fun and I stayed after dark. And I went home and my mother was scared to death. And she told my father, ‘You know, you've never given him a whipping. It's your turn to discipline him.' And it had been raining that day and I had a raincoat on, so he said, ‘Okay, I'll whip him.' So he took me in the bathroom and said, “You take that raincoat off and put it over the toilet stool, and every time I hit it with the belt, you yell.' So he was beating the raincoat and I was yelling and my mother was trying to break the door down. She said, ‘I didn't tell you to kill him, I just told you to give him a spanking!” But he didn't hit me. Never in his life did he ever hit me.” When Paul Compton's mother, Clara, answered that boarding house telephone on October 22, 1934, “the night the bad news came,” she was informed that Jackie's father had been shot and killed by the FBI. “You're constantly running and hiding and you don't know when you're going to get to see anybody. You might have to sleep in the woods. It's just a miserable life. It might look exciting to somebody, but you look at the end, the way it came down and everything: he was constantly on the run. He might have had a lot of money at one time or other, but it never did him any good. And you've no place to go and really relax or have fun, like you should be able to.” But Jackie understood why his father did what he did. “This bank had taken his grandfather's money – which he had in the bank – and his grandfather had asked the banker, the day before the bank went bad, if his money was safe. And he told him it was. And evidently the bank started up again. So my father went to his grandfather and told him, ‘Grandpa, I want you to sit...

Hi Friend, Welcome to Episode 39 of Sally’s Performing Arts Lab Podcast. Today you’ll hear my long-awaited talk with the multi-talented founders of LoJoWerkz, Tim Long and Jerome Johnson. I’m Sally Adams, your SallyPAL podcast host. Every week I talk to people like the LojoWERKz team about creating original work for a live audience. We talk about practical matters such as finding a great stage manager, scheduling for a show, and booking the right venue. My guests and I also explore social issues such as "open writing" and inclusion, women's voices, and celebrating "otherness". Check out the show notes on the blog to get links to the things we talk about and see photos of my guests. Send an email anytime to Sally@sallypal.com. Your ideas keep great conversations coming every week. Check out sallypal.com/join for a cool free theatre resource. It’s never too late to sign up and have access to the Creator’s Notebook. I’m interested in knowing what creators need as a performing arts resource. If there are things you want included in the Creator’s Notebook, let me know by sending an email to sally@sallypal.com. I read them all. Be sure and listen until the end of the interview for Concise Advice from the Interview, and Words of Wisdom from George. LoJoWERKz Graphic Arts Version of Jerome and Tim at Work LoJoWERKz Tim Long and Jerome Johnson met in 1991 at Okmulgee High School in Oklahoma when Tim was a young substitute teacher doing music and art on the side and Jerome was a high school kid into street dancing. Today the pair form the foundation of LoJoWERKz productions. The innovative stage and screen entertainment company blends hip-hop culture with traditional genres and has garnered some very high level attention. Tim’s companion art label, TuTchT IMAGING, creates graphic art featuring models of color. Before collaborating on their first full book musical, A Song of Greenwood, in the late 1990s, the two LojoWERKz founders collaborated on projects for the church they both attended. Higher Dimensions Church in Tulsa, led by Carlton Pearson, encouraged the pair’s creative expression and led to a working partnership. The Cast of "Roofless" from the 2016 Table Reading LoJoWERKz' current project, Roofless, started as a dance concert directed by the inimitable Tyrone Wilkerson for American Theatre Company in Tulsa. They worked the Roofless script into a full-blown musical and were awarded a place in 2004 into the ASCAP Foundation/Disney Musical Theatre Workshop. When they were accepted, Michael Kerker, Director of Musical Theatre for ASCAP, told them Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz was really impressed by their work. Tim and Jerome have been mentored by Kerker and Schwartz since 2004. In 2005 they won the Harold Arlen Musical Theatre Award. Since that time the show has been called “groundbreaking”, “genius”, and “the future of the musical” by people who know what they’re talking about. Tim has a background in film. He’s a 1988 graduate of the famously innovative CalArts.  And he and Jerome have been working on a new approach Roofless. They gave SallyPAL an exclusive reveal of what’s next for this amazing show and it’s going to expand the musical form on many levels. Tim and Jerome already have some experience creating a blend of new and old they both love. In the short film HotFoot, Jerome choreographs famous hip-hop dance artist Lil Buck in a silent movie that also features Jerome’s eight-year-old son Sage. I’ve followed Lojowerkz for a few years and it’s really great to see this pair experiencing the success they deserve. They're just good people and there’s more ahead for both of these extraordinarily talented friends. They talk about a lot of exciting new things happening in the worlds of musical theatre, film, and hip-hop, including Lin Manuel Miranda’s works, In the Heights and Hamilton, and the work of artists like Lil Buck. You’ll hear Jerome’s son, Sage, in the background. Also, his wife, Tyff, makes a brief appearance. If you listen to the podcast, be sure and listen until the end of the interview for Concise Advice from the Interview, and Words of Wisdom from George. Concise Advice from the Interview: 9) Being an outsider can be an advantage. Use it. 8) Keep moving forward and surround yourself with smart people, you’ll eventually get where you need to go. 7) Listen to critique for the grain of truth but take advice from people who know what they’re doing. 6) Don’t try to reshape what you have to fit the marketplace, but do get in the system to get to the caliber of advice you need. 5) Submit your work once it’s performance ready. 4) Get into legitimate circles to hone your voice and your craft. 3) A great idea won’t leave you. 2) Know your voice. 1) Keep putting your foot on the gas and go. Sandra (Sandi) Golden is running for the upcoming election for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. She is the daughter of Eugene Golden and the late Minnie (Jeffley) Spicer. She has one son, Thomas who attends school in Weleetka. She is running for office because she believes there is still much to do in the development as a sovereign nation. Our offices in Okmulgee seem to get bigger and bigger while the services to the citizens and communities seem to get smaller. It is really scary to think we are becoming the government establishment we used to complain about! It has been said that you cannot correct the problems with the same methods that caused them. Change takes commitment of time and effort with courage to do what is right. She has worked hard during two terms of commitment to the MCN. Working with fellow Okfuskee representatives Mae Jackson and Nancy Watson worked well because they share similar concerns for all Creek citizens. Let’s do it again!
