Seeking Barrier-Free Dance EducationDanceCast is a podcast that spotlights non-traditional dance artists. It is produced by Silva Laukkanen, an advocate for inclusive dance based in Austin, TX. In this episode of DanceCast, Silva Laukkanen is actually the interviewee. She is interviewed by co-worker April Sullivan and Art Spark Texas' executive director Celia Hughes. This episode is part of a series interviewing institutions with inclusive dance programs and individuals who identify as disabled and have experienced formal dance education as either students or teachers. This series is part of Silva's ongoing work as the director of Art Spark Texas' dance program and their multi-year community-engaged research project, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, that explores disability-centered accessibility in dance education and how we can create barrier-free dance education for students with disabilities in the US. Silva shares her dance history and how she was introduced to inclusive dance spaces as a young person, how the disability dance field is behind in terms of education, and how Art Spark Texas' research project is assessing what existing opportunities are out there and what more needs to be done. Silva Laukkanen is a passionate advocate for inclusive dance, aiming to broaden perceptions of who can dance and where dance happens. These questions led her to create DanceCast in 2016, a podcast spotlighting non-traditional dance artists, and to co-author Breadth of Bodies, Discussing Disability in Dance in 2022, a book featuring interviews with dance artists with disabilities globally. As Director of Integrated Dance at Art Spark Texas, Silva Laukkanen leads bi-annual intensives, performance projects, and monthly classes. In 2020, she co-founded Tractus Art with a colleague from South Africa. Together, they produce videos highlighting artists with disabilities and are working on a children's book about a dance company founder who is Deaf, set for publication later this year. Silva also collaborates with other inclusive dance companies, providing support in arts administration. Silva holds a BFA from North Karelia College and a postgraduate degree from Trinity Laban Conservatoire. A certified DanceAbility teacher since 2003, she has trained with choreographers and companies like Adam Benjamin, AXIS Dance Company, and Dancing Wheels. Currently, she is pursuing an MA in Dance: Participation, Community, Activism at the London Contemporary Dance School and serves as the board president of Kaaos Company, Finland's leading inclusive dance company. To learn more, www.artsparkdance.org.

Episode 125 Adam Benjamin ClarkSix year old Adam Benjamin Clark was born in 1977 with a rare condition called Cornelia de Lange syndrome. The condition made caring for Adam and keeping up with his needs difficult. But Adam's mom Joyce was up for the challenge. Despite juggling the breakup of her marraige, caring for Adam and his older sister, paying the bills, and going to school to become a nurse, somehow Joyce juggled it all. She was committed to providing Adam with care and love. But in 1983, tragedy struck. Hai describes how he came to dance almost by accident, meeting Tali in a workshop led by Adam Benjamin that culminated in a performance. They fervently studied Adam Benjamin's exercises, and within a year Vertigo Power of Balance was born. Tali and Hai speak about how they developed their teacher trainings for one teacher with and one teacher without a disability, as well as their summer intensive programs. They also share the process developing their most recent piece, Shape on Us, choreographed by Sharon Fridman, through a pandemic and war. Hai describes how he was struck by the raw and real way in which Sharon chose to display disability in the piece.Text by Emmaly Wiederholt. Dan Daw is an Australian dance artist based in Birmingham. Dan grew up in Whyalla, in country South Australia. Starting dance at a young age, his grandmother was a callisthenics teacher, so was surrounded by dance and movement from a young age. "It gave me an outlet and a way to express myself, and to be in a space where I could see myself represented." Dan started dancing with Restless Dance Theatre in 2002, before dancing with a range of different companies including; Australian Dance Theatre, and Force Majeure (Australia), FRONTLINEdance, Scottish Dance Theatre, balletLORENT, Candoco Dance Company (UK), and with Skånes Dansteater (Sweden).Throughout his performance career Dan has worked with Kat Worth, Garry Stewart, Kate Champion, Janet Smith, Adam Benjamin, Wendy Houstoun, Sarah Michelson, Rachid Ouramdane, Nigel Charnock, Matthias Sperling, Marc Brew, Claire Cunningham, Martin Forsberg, Carl Olof Berg and Javier de Frutos.Dan left Australia to work with Candoco Dance Company, finding a lack of opportunities in Australia, depressed at the prospect of needing to go on the dole after significant performance opportunities. There are bigger conversations that need to be had about who can be considered a dancer within an Australian context and who is missing out on professional opportunities. Dan's work often blurs the lines between dance and theatre and can have a common theme related to time. Dan has created solo works – ‘Beast’ by Martin Forsberg and ‘On One Condition’ by Graham Adey, the latter receiving the Adelaide Fringe Best Theatre Award 2017. In 2020 Dan will premiere his new work The Dan Daw Show, which explores inspiration, porn and audiences expectations of disabled artists. Dan was interviewed during a successful run of Thank You Very Much by Claire Cunningham during Manchester International Festival. This is the first episode in a season looking at Australian dance artists working and living overseas.

Jeffries & Company analyst Adam Benjamin thinks Apple has a 6-month to almost a year competitive lead with the video enabled iPod and videos for sale at the iTMS. Sandra mentions Apple stock falling due to Wall Street's lower than expected iPod sales. Yeah, they were only through the roof as usual. Two women in the street - one clueless while the other totally gets it. At $299 she says, "Considering what an iPod cost when it first came out, that's a steal."The post package quad anchor desk chit chat implies iPods are hard to figure out and may damage your ears and next your eyes. Nobody there expressed the least level of marvel at this development.Interesting few seem to understand the iPod has had video output since the introduction of the iPod Photo a year ago. Let's not forget video headsets you can wear to have a large screen experience out of that little iPod. On researching this product, I've noticed they are currently not in strong supply and cost $300-$400 based on old designs. So I imagine this development will inspire AV engineers all over the world to making the development of a new generation of inexpensive video headsets an engineering priority for introduction ASAP. These will be light, run on AAA batteries and have independent LCD "screens" that can individually be flipped up so you can watch vids with one eye while you walk, jog, or ride mass transit. This may be the hot iPod video accessory for 2007.
