Send us a Text Message. On this episode I talk all things werewolves and horror with my friend Matt Wilcock of the bands Werewolves, Abramelin,The Antichrist Imperium and Shotgun Mistress. Matt is one hell of a musician and a huge horror fan. I had a killer time talking with Matt and it definitely won't be the last time. Interview by Kris PetersIf you used only the sheer brutality of their music as a guide, it would be easy and highly probable to imagine Werewolves to be a serious metal band. Their music is soul-destroying and intense, pummelling your senses from every angle before regrouping to smash you in places you didn't even know existed. No shit. But when you listen to or read an interview with any of the three members - or even read the quotes in their press releases - then it becomes blatantly obvious that there is a plethora of riches simmering just below the surface that generally manifest themselves by way of humour or self-depreciation.Because Werewolves are not a by-the-numbers, regulated behemoth, They are a formidable force of nature with a laconic, Australian sense of humour who actually give little fucks to what is happening around them as long as they get to immortalise the problem in verse.Ten years ago a fresh and ambitious death metal outfit featuring three well-known musicians of the Australian heavy scene - Sam Bean (The Berzerker), Matt Wilcock (The Berzerker, Akercocke) and Dave Haley (Psycroptic, Ruins, Blood Duster) - boldly declared their intent to release one each year for the next decade.Fast-forward to today and Werewolves are about to successfully hit the halfway point with their fifth entry Die For Us, which will be released over several platforms starting with Bandcamp on July 12 then everywhere else from July 19.HEAVY caught up with vocalist/bass player Sam Bean last night to find out just how brutal album number five is going to be."This one's a little bit different," he measured when we asked how he was feeling about Die For Us. "It's a self-release this one, so there's been a lot of moving parts. Whereas with the other ones, we'd just roll up to each album release basically in a carriage with horses and the red carpet treatment (smiles), this time around there was a lot of moving, spinning plates that we were having to keep spinning. Normally, we'd already be on our victory lap even before the album is released. Now we're very much just staring at that date and crossing the fingers that all goes well. We're quite a bit more nervous this time around that everything happens as it should. As for the response for the album, we don't worry about that. We never worry about that. We've got a pretty heinous slab of death metal that we know is absolutely stupendous, and that the title track - the very first thing that anyone will hear when listening to the album - is just gonna knock both their socks off and then some. We're not worried about that. We're worried about the boring bullshit out back of house (laughs)."In the full interview, Sam talks more about the musical side of Die For Us, the brutality of their music and how the band gets that tough exterior, having Rok from Sadistik Exekution guest on one of the tracks, keeping up with their promise of one album a year for ten years, the pros and cons of releasing an album yourself, the term Caveman Death Metal that has been thrust upon them, maintaining the rage and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

And let's not forget U.D.O., led by Udo Dirkschneider, reminding us of metal's enduring power. Rock vibes incoming! Scott Stapp shares his emotive tunes, while Mammoth WVH, Wolfgang Van Halen's project, continues the family legacy. Alice Cooper brings his signature theatrics, keeping us captivated. For the heavy and extreme enthusiasts, SVALBARD and TesseracT bring progressive flair. VUKOVI's electronic infusion and AMARANTHE's genre-blurring keep us guessing. Lyrizone, CADAVER, and CRYPTOPSY bring intense sounds, while GO AHEAD AND DIE and Grand Cadaver deliver unadulterated heaviness. THE OMNIFIC and OBLIVION PROTOCOL impress, Spanish Love Songs tell stories, and LS Dunes, Empire State Bastard intrigue. Thunderstick and Ann Wilson close the show with finesse.

Werewolves are launching their cracking album for 2022 on June 24 titled, From The Cave To The Grave, which is a great opportunity to catch up with Matt and discuss the album, his stellar guitar performance and other interesting topics.
Melbourne rock outfit Shotgun Mistress have been making waves since the release of their self titled debut album mid last year. They burst onto the scene with a swagger and assuredness that could almost have been mistaken for arrogance had they not delivered everything they promised and more.Originally formed by Matt Wilcock - better known for his work in death metal outfits The Bezerker, Akercocke and Abramelin - Shotgun Mistress are Australia's answer to the Sunset Strip bands of LA, but with twice the purpose. On the eve of their massive Australian tour with fellow Melbourne rockers Electric Mary, drummer David Lee joined HEAVY for a light hearted chat about the past, present and future of Shotgun Mistress. With the recent state of cancelled or postponed shows, we start by asking if he has allowed himself to get excited for the tour yet?"I don't know man," he laughed. "I'm waking up pretty early tomorrow morning! It will be like, is this real or is it going to fuck me again? Let's wait and see what happens tomorrow morning! We're leaving early so we'll hopefully be at the airport around 7 am and then we'll be down at Tassie by about 10 and fingers crossed we can keep moving around and let's get this done this time. It's been two years in the making for us all so we just really want to get out and party now, and rock and roll."It seems only natural that playing live - like anything that takes practice - is something that could quickly desert you with a prolongued absence, and Dave honestly affirms that theory."You do lose a little bit of the feel once you haven't done it for such a long time," he measured, "but I tell you what, it only takes one or two songs and then you're straight back in. You get the energy running with all the crowds and everything again and create some mayhem and have as much fun with the crowd as possible. That's what it's all about. We play the music, they bang their heads and enjoy themselves and scream and shout and drink plenty of alcohol and we all have a good time together!"In the full interview Dave runs us through the tour and what to expect, speaks about touring with Electric Mary and why the two bands make a good fit, getting back out there and playing to your fans, progress on album number two and more.

It's time for another review from Steve and Remfry on Riot Act Reviews, where we collect our thoughts regarding a significant or interesting recent album that our hosts have heard. On this episode we are diving deeper into the underground than we have previously done so on this portion of the show by looking at Breaking the Trauma Bond, the 4th studio album from London goth-black metal band Voices. Featuring members of cult UK extreme metal band Akercocke, Voices received a little bit of attention and critical love for 2014's London album but it is here on their fourth record where Voices have really found their… er… voice. This is a sixteen track, 68 minute meld of Danzig, Killing Joke, Satyricon, Bauhaus and Type O Negative, and we wanted to bring it to your attention. https://youtu.be/akywKvHcx_g (An Audience of Mannequins (Official Lyric Video)) https://churchroadrecords.limitedrun.com/products/709987-voices-breaking-the-trauma-bond-pre-order (Like the sound of the record? The LGBT+ heavy metal podcast this week looks at how Akercocke's signature anthem is both incredibly evil and camper than a row of tents at Christmas, and what connects it to Liza Minelli and musical theatre. Making his long overdue debut on Into The Necrosphere this week is the mighty Matt Wilcock, formerly of Akercocke, now shredding for Satan in The Antichrist Imperium and Werewolves (amongst other projects). We discuss his music career, growing up in Australia, death metal vocals and (gasp) Guns 'n Roses. Plus - I review the new Blaze of Perdition record, "The Harrowing of Hearts".Follow the show on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook (@intothenecrosphere).This podcast is also available on YouTube
Finally making his Into The Necrosphere debut, my guest on this episode is Jason Mendonca of the peerless Akercocke. We chat about the band reforming and the response to their most recent record, Renaissance In Extremis, as well as - inevitably - the cinematic magnificence of The Exorcist. Then on 'What I'm Cranking This Week', I sing the praises of Cavusum, Sanctvs and The Great Ones.
On this episode of Into The Necrosphere, I talk to the prodigiously talented Sam Loynes of Voices, Akercocke, The Antichrist Imperium and Shrines about joining one of his favourite bands, the genius of 'There Will Be Blood' and a whole lot more. Then on 'What I'm Cranking This Week', I review the new Gatecreeper, Panzerfaust and Tronos records.
Robert Cooper takes over as we review one of his picks, Akercocke - Renaissance in Extremis! Akercocke are an English extreme metal band from London, formed in 1997 by Jason Mendonca and David Gray. The band also features Paul Scanlan and Nathanael Underwood. A new album, Renaissance in Extremis, was released on 25 August 2017, Which was their first full length album in a decade since 2007's 'Antichrist'.
Innovative, brutal and wholly unique, Akercocke have continually flouted musical convention to create an undefinable and unmistakable sound, one that defies classification by being undeniably idiosyncratic. Returning to the scene after a decade long hiatus, Sue chats to frontman Jason Mendonca and drummer David Gray, about touring their newest album, the writing process, and the demise of individualism in apathetic times. The key to their success? Well, it may just come surrounded by a layer of sausage meat and tasty breadcrumbs...
Now is the time. This is the hour. Ours is the magic. Ours is the power. Still bewitching and beguiling two decades after it’s release, The Craft has invoked a cult appeal that speaks to generations of creepy kids, inspired and empowered by its counterculture characters and flair for fashion. Sue chats wicked Wiccans, the influence on popular culture, and an enduring legacy brought about by relatability within a fantastical situation. We’ll also be checking out the latest single, One Chapter Closing for Another one to Begin, from legendary progressive metal wizards Akercocke. So hail to the Guardians of the Watchtower, take into yourself the power and relax...it’s only magic... Blessed be.

This week, Eden is gone! I swear this isn't some Fast and Furious 8 situation where Eden and I hate each other and don't appear on screen at the same time (see Vin Diesel and The Rock), but just real life getting in the way. But Tidal is still alive, so we must go on. This week we have Simon Handmaker, fellow Heavy Blog editor and meme master. We discuss some news/new music, like The Faceless facing troubles, Spotify needing to change their business model, and new music from: Myrkur, Contrarian, Wolves in the Throne Room, Celeste, Humanity's Last Breath, Cytotoxin, Rings of Saturn, Ne Obliviscaris, Tera Melos, Converge, Akercocke and August Burns Red. Then we do some cool people stuff talking about The Room and The Disaster Artist, some movies by A24 productions including The Lobster, then Pyre and PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS. Enjoy!
Ever felt like your sibling was transforming into a monster? Sam Emerson does, and when his brother Michael starts hanging out with the local in-crowd, he quickly realises, that it's first come, first staked. It's been 30 years since Joel Schumacher's cult classic was released, and the film is still as relevant and revered today, an immortal classic that helped to redefine vampires for a new generation, thanks to iconic characters to imminently quotable dialogue. Sue looks at the legacy of the film, from it's influence on style, to it's commercial appeal and undeniable longevity. We'll also be checking out the new single from extreme metal legends Akercocke. So grab a garlic t-shirt, splash on some Windex, and head on down to the murder capital of the world, where you'll never grow old, and you'll never die. It's fun to be a vampire.

I'm back, and so is Eden, so we have a normal episode for once! And it's a glorious trainwreck. We talk about new music, including Myrkur, The Arusha Accord, Akercocke, Leprous, Igorrr, Fractal Universe, ZETA, The Contortionist, The Faceless, and Queens of the Stone Age. Also, Gene Simmons of KISS trying to trademark the metal horns. We have an extended discussion on bands appropriating spiritualism and eastern philosophy and then do the first part of a deep segment on Devin Townsend. Specifically Strapping Young Lad and Devin Townsend Band. This one's a wild ride, so enjoy!
