From the vaults: Scott and Alison Stratten talked with Association Chat for the Association Chat Book Club in December about their book, The Jackass Whisperer: How to Deal With the Worst People at Work, at Home, and Online—Even When the Jackass Is You. Scott and Alison are co-authors of several best-selling business books, including UnBranding: 100 Branding Lessons for the Age of Disruption, UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging, and The Book of Business (UnAwesome). They're also co-owners of UnMarketing Inc., and co-hosts of The UnPodcast. Formerly a music industry marketer, national sales training manager, and a professor at the Sheridan College School of Business, Scott ran his "UnAgency" for a nearly a decade before focusing on speaking about social media and marketing, at events, for companies, such as PepsiCo, Adobe, Red Cross, Cirque du Soleil, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Fidelity Investments. I invited Scott and Alison to join me on the Association Chat Podcast to discuss The Jackass Whisperer, and how the book, despite its light-hearted title, has valuable lessons to teach about empathy, compassion, and cooperation.

He explained that he used to speak at multiple events and have a whole team helping him with all the equipment, and now, he taught himself how to use the equipment and programs to stream live! He said, that it is is okay if every day is not your day, that we need to stop trying to get the MOST out of every day, otherwise it is a treadmill that will burn you out. We talked about different programs you can use when adapting to the new norm like Ecamm live (https://www.ecamm.com/mac/ecammlive/) which helps create different screens while you are live. Last, he told us to think of community as a verb, always be working on your community. Scott and Alison Stratten are co-authors of 5 best-selling business books, co-owners of UnMarketing Inc and co-hosts of not only The UnPodcast, but five children, two dogs, and two cats. Scott Stratten and I (along with Ron Tite) have been texting, supporting and being there for one another on daily basis for years. With that, it doesn't change the fact that Scott is one impressive, caring and giving human being. Some have called him one of the ultimate sales and marketing truth slayer. Scott is a famed (in fact, hall of fame) professional speaker and co-author (with his wife, Alison Stratten). Marketing, Branding, Business, Customers, Loyalty   Summary   Our brand is not what we'd LIKE the marketplace to think of us and say about us. It's what they DO think and say about us. We'll look at that in our Thought of the Day. And in our interview segment, branding authority, Alison Stratten shares with us the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to businesses … and their branding. That and more on today's show.   Bob's Thought of the Day   We'll explore:   The importance of constantly working at being a brand worthy of being chosen over our worthy competitors in the marketplace. One way of being “brand worthy” to our customers. The critical difference between how you WANT your customers to feel about your company, and how they ACTUALLY feel about it. Interview with Alison Stratten   You'll discover:   How Alison defines branding. The two key elements of a brand. What it means to be disruptive. Four ways to create customer loyalty. How the logos of Apple and Volkswagon can elicit polar opposite feelings. Why rebranding is about changing practices and creating great brand stories. A compelling story about a pizza company whose staff saved a man's life. Why frontline staff are a company's biggest and best ambassadors. An example where trying too hard can come across as...insulting. Why a company should take more time to find out its customers' real needs. One example of incongruence and one of congruence with two different brands.   Click to Tweet   The only “why” we should have is because our customers want it or because our market needs it. #branding #business @unalison Your #brand doesn't actually belong to you. It belongs to your customers. @unalison You can't redesign a #logo to fix your problems, and you shouldn't even try. #branding @unalison   Interview Links   UnMarketing.com UnPodcast.comUnBranding by Scott and Alison StrattenUnSelling by Scott and Alison StrattenQR Codes Kill Kittens by Scott and Alison StrattenUnMarketing by Scott and Alison Stratten The Book of Business Awesome/UnAwesome by Scott and Alison Stratten Connect with Alison on LinkedIn Connect with Alison on Facebook Follow Alison on Twitter Resources   Sell The Go-Giver Way Audio Program GoGiverSalesAcademy.com The Go-Giver Leader TheGoGiver.com GoGiverSpeaker.com Burg.com How to Post a Review

Why Alison feels often times there's more to learn from train-wrecks when things go badly wrong as opposed to when they went right. Why she feels overly focusing on new technology can take away from creating value for your customers. Technology is just a tool. The relationship between brand and influencer is complex. It takes more than metrics. It takes a hard discussion about values. You can't put a flashy campaign on something that's worthless and expect it all to work out.   3 Key Points: Success doesn't have a specific measure. Don't be intimidated or overly concerned with ten steps down the road. Enjoy the journey you're on. Focus on loyalty, not new technology. Quality will always trump convenience. Social Media metrics alone (followers, likes etc.) are easy to manipulate and shouldn't be the only way to evaluate Influencers.   Get New Show Alters in Facebook Messenger! Community is something we all can picture but I doubt many of us think about it daily or even picture how much communities have changed over the last 10 years thanks to social media.   Facebook had its first community summit this week and made a major announcement changing their full mission statement to: "Give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together" Beyond the mission statement change the focus was on facebook groups and giving admins more tools and better understanding what makes online communities work and bridging offline communities in this digital age.   I believe the changes announced below to facebook groups will drastically improve the possibilities available for groups led by strong admins with a strong purpose.  Beyond that I believe this is just another sign of the role communities will play for businesses as we move forward. On this episode I also survey my community on what makes a great facebook group and what are things that a facebook group can’t allow if it wasn’t to be valuable for the community.
