TMDP 067: Why NO ONE is safe from AI with Christopher S. Penn

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2018 55:40

Christopher S. Penn bridges the gap between marketing and technology. What he shares on social media and writes about on his blog helps you understand marketing and technology better. He's a better coder than most marketers, and a better marketer than most coders. By having one foot in both worlds, he finds solutions that work in one place and brings them to the other – including you. He speaks publicly about digital marketing, marketing technology, and machine learning/artificial intelligence. He's the co-founder of Brain+Trust Insights, a data analytics company focused on helping you make more money with your data, a co-founder of PodCamp with Chris Brogan, and co-host of the Marketing Over Coffee podcast with John Wall. Follow Christopher on Twitter at @cspenn. He can also be found on LinkedIn and the Marketing Over Coffee group.   You'll Learn: Christopher's career evolution from a pure technology background to marketing technology or MarTech. Why Christopher believes there's a lot wrong with current Influencer Marketing. Content Marketing always had a cover charge, but it's a lot higher if your content sucks. What you create has got to be better than the alternatives. Why Facebook won't win the fight against #FakeNews Humans must make sure historical bias doesn't affect machine learning by being model checkers.   3 Key Points:  NO ONE is safe from the coming AI revolution! You must remain flexible and willing to adapt quickly because the industry changes so rapidly. You can't be left-brained or right-brained anymore. Why Brett feels the next wave of inbound marketing is creating cool pieces of software. The marketing psychology of staying top of mind and the tangible benefits of good branding. The very real danger of memes becoming idea viruses. The marketing significance of life events in Google.    3 Key Points: Being able to identify and analyze trends is the most important thing because you're only going to get a few waves in your lifetime. TMDP 065: Why Digital Discernment is a Life Skill

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 2, 2018 24:35

It's been one whole year since this podcast launched on 03-JAN-3017. It would be dishonest of me to say I'm not pleasantly shocked we made it this far. A big THANK YOU to all my guests and supporters for helping me make it this far. During a given season I ask all my guests the same questions. And while that might sound boring, when you ask everyone the same questions it allows you to chart the answers and apply statistical analysis methodologies.  One of the more sensitive questions I ask it about #FakeNews and Facebook's response to this issue on its platform. The answers run the gamut, but on the whole professional marketers are largely unsympathetic. I have a bit more empathy as I argue that #DigitalDiscernment is a life skill with the 2016 U.S. Presidential election being a prime example of why that is.   You'll Learn:  Why I ask my guests the same set of questions. Why guest 53 Isiah Fowler feels we as individuls were responsible for #FakeNews Why guest 57 Joe Pulizzi feel Facebook is a media company and as such has a higher degree of responsibility for the #FakeNews issue.   3 Key Points:  You can't, or at least shouldn't begrudge people for not having a skill that they don't know is a skill. #DigitalDiscernment is a skill. You're not dumb; you were duped. #FakeNews is a complex issue and the layperson was taken advantage of.   Resources Mention:  TMDP 053: Why Success Starts with a Vision with Isiah Fowler TMDP 057: Killing Marketing with Joe Pulizzi   Get New Show Alters in Facebook Messenger! The one thing Brent wished he had done that he didn't as he gained prominence in the industry. How Brent coped with the rigors of being a CRM industry thought leader. Why Brent feels AI without conversational interfaces that make is easy for humans to talk and get answers… it's almost useless. Why big companies like Microsoft and Amazon are partnering to tackle voice search. Why the lines between #InfluencerMarketing and PR have become muddied and why they're not the same thing.   3 Key Points: Be organized, structured and consistent about the process of creating your content/ thought leadership. In part one I explored what I call “The Gospel of Gary Vee”, and gave my perspective on the views of both held by Alexis P. Morgan and Douglas Karr. In this episode I'm going to make the point that Gary's message is often weaponized and used in an offensive manner in the same way the Christian gospel was used as a weapon during the bloody historical period known as The Crusades. I also highlight a viral, $100 To The Winner Of The Race, and provide perspective as to why Gary receives such a strong reaction from individuals like myself and Alexis P. Morgan.   You'll Learn: How Gary Vaynerchuk's message of personal accountability gets taken out of context and used as a weapon. Why I had a falling out with a mastermind member who prescribed to Gary's way of thinking. How white privilege compromises some individuals ability to empathize (not sympathize but empathize) and give good advice. Where the deep seated frustration with Gary's gospel comes from.   3 Key Points: Gary's message gets abused by his followers to attack people in the same way the Christian Gospel was used to shed blood during the historical period of The Crusades. Personal accountability is not a license to be racially insensitive. The stakes are high and people have died. “Privilege blinds because is it the nature of privilege to blind.” ~ Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.   Resources Mention: TMDP 055: The Gospel of Gary Vaynerchuk Pt. 1 The Terrorists of Capitalism: A Response To Gary Vaynerchuk Gary's Response to Alexis P. In his most recent roles at Ovation and Church's Chicken, Rob is hired by PE firms to serve on senior management team and lead turnaround, rebranding, develop strategies and execute plans to reverse severe sales declines. In both instances he dramatically impacted sales trends and at Ovation Brands, the existing owners were able to monetize and exit the business. Follow Rob on Twitter at @robcrews. He can also be found on LinkedIn.   You'll Learn:  How the study of economics ultimately influenced Rob to pursue a career in marketing. Why marketers should always be on either extreme and never get caught in the “murky middle”. Why non-marketers struggle to understand the value of a good marketing professional, no matter how much you quantify it. How the overemphasis on the mechanics of marketing can lead to the death of good storytelling. Why #DigitalDiscernment is now a matter of civic duty because democracy demands an educated populous.   3 Key Points: The power of a brand name on your resume is always stronger than the skillsets you possess. Joey was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug in 2002 when he launched digitalguestlist.com as a graduate student at Florida A&M University. The site grew to 80,000 subscribers/users, and advertised thousands of events for Fortune 500 companies, agencies, and high-profile promoters during special events weekends like NBA All-Star Weekend, Super Bowl, and Essence Music Festival. He also used innovative digital marketing strategies to execute events in the Southeast for brands such as Crown Royal, Ciroc, Smirnoff, Coors Light, Warner Bros., and Hennessy.   You'll Learn: How a summer program at Tuskegee University started Joey down his entrepreneurial path. How Joey has been using technology to solve large-scale social problems. The common pitfalls that trip up most startups. Why Joey is so staunchly against censorship on Facebook despite the scourge of #FakeNews.   3 Key Points:  Focus on core values and surround yourself with like-minded people. TMDP 055: The Gospel of Gary Vaynerchuk Pt. 1

This past September 11th an absolutely blistering Medium article about Gary Vee cropped up on my LinkedIn. In it the author makes an argument that unabashed capitalist such as Gary are tantamount to terrorists. Now if you listen to this show (or read the description) it should come as a surprise to no one I have my professional issues with Gary's stance on formal education. That being said, even this was a bit much for me. I was so taken aback I asked if this article was fair to Gary in Carlos Gil's private Social Media Mastermind Facebook Group. The conversation was lively with respectful discourse. My friend, fellow podcaster and ninth guest of this very podcast Douglas Karr chimed in with a perspective I think is representative of conservative Republicans who openly support Donald Trump (which Doug is among). In this episode I explore what I call “The Gospel of Gary Vee”, and give my perspective on the views of both Alexis P. Morgan and Douglas Karr. It's my sincere hope you gain both insight and clarity from this sensitive, yet much needed conversation.   You'll Learn: Why Alexis P. Morgan is so damn mad at Gary (or not). Why I feel Alexis' overall argument is quite valid, despite to scathing tone. The disconnect between viewpoint of conservative Republicans like Douglas Karr and the realities of corporate opportunities based on my life experiences. How name discrimination and other social pressures informed my journey of entrepreneurship. The simple social experiment whites can take to experience the challenges Black face just getting into Corporate America.   3 Key Points: Even if you don't like the tone or form of expression someone uses, that doesn't make their argument mute. Opportunity without access is meaningless. White privilege exists and is a distinct business advantage.   Resources Mention: The Terrorists of Capitalism: A Response To Gary Vaynerchuk Gary's Response to Alexis P. Follow Alison on Twitter at @UnAlsion. She can also be found on LinkedIn and www.unmarketing.com.   You'll Learn: How Alison's entrepreneurial journey to create something she couldn't find in the market transformed into UnMarketing. Why Alison feels often times there's more to learn from train-wrecks when things go badly wrong as opposed to when they went right. Why she feels overly focusing on new technology can take away from creating value for your customers. Technology is just a tool. The relationship between brand and influencer is complex. It takes more than metrics. It takes a hard discussion about values. You can't put a flashy campaign on something that's worthless and expect it all to work out.   3 Key Points: Success doesn't have a specific measure. Don't be intimidated or overly concerned with ten steps down the road. Enjoy the journey you're on. Focus on loyalty, not new technology. Quality will always trump convenience. Social Media metrics alone (followers, likes etc.) are easy to manipulate and shouldn't be the only way to evaluate Influencers.   Get New Show Alters in Facebook Messenger! After 30 years in business he retired. Christopher can recite much of The Big Lebowski, but can't remember his wife's phone number. I started this podcasting journey on a firm foundation thanks to your collective generosity. For that I am truly thankful. In this episode I muse about some of the great points Avinash Kaushik makes in a recent post about artificial intelligence (AI) and the implication for marketers. The analyst role as we know it may soon be going the way of the dinosaur as we move from solving “known knowns” to solving for “unknown unknowns”. That, and what Avinash calls Complete Day One Knowledge. If you geek out about these sort of things as Avinash and I clearly do, then you won't want to miss this episode.   You'll Learn: Why you need to be reading everything Avinash Kaushik writes about AI (like I do). The difference between artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) How Google and Facebook use AI and machine learning TODAY to keep us all inside “content bubbles”. How predictive analytics company Cambridge Analtica used machine learning to help elect Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United State. Why roles such as data analysts and diagnosing patients will be taken over by AI. Why you should be excited and not fearful of this brave new world.   3 Key Points:  The hype is real. AI isn't coming; it's here. Machine learning is actively used by Google and Facebook. Repetitive roles such as data analysts will soon be taken over by AI. Just breathe… all will be well. There will still be a place for humans.   Resources Mention: The Artificial Intelligence Opportunity: A Camel to Cars Moment Artificial Intelligence: Implications On Marketing, Analytics, And You SPOS #580 - Avinash Kaushik On Machine Learning And Artificial Intelligence For Marketing   Killer Resources:  Ready to go pro but aren't sure if College is the right choice for you? It's designed to take the intimidation out of reporting excessive force as well as reward good cops for positive interaction. I also contrast the diversity shown in Twitter images from hack-a-thon again the imagery from the Innovation Congress conference and call on conference organizers to address the access issue to their conferences faced by many minorities.   You'll Learn: Good Nations #Hacktheviolence initiative to reduce violence by 40% by 2020. Why the future is bright as we race towards SkyNet. Lol! How the Civility app by Roverlent helps report personal encounters with police and improves police community relations. Why the diversity in the audience at Innovation Congress wasn't reflected in the images that were tweeted out. How conference organizers can partner with organizations like Goodie Nation to bridge this diversity gap.   3 Key Points: Hack-a-thons are not for the faint of heart. Goodie Nation's #Hacktheviolence initiative is using technology to reduce violence. He also owns and runs Agency Management Institute (AMI), which serves 250+ agencies small to mid sized agencies (advertising, digital, marketing, media and PR) every year, so they can increase their AGI, attract better clients and employees, mitigate the risks of being self employed in a such volatile business and best of all — let the agency owner actually enjoy the perks of agency ownership. Drew often appears in publications like Entrepreneur Magazine, New York Times, Washington Post, Agency Post, AdAge, CNN, BusinessWeek, and many others. The disconnect on the client side of how much labor and intelligence it takes to deploy successful campaign and why agencies struggle to get paid appropriately.   3 Key Points: There is no complacency in marketing. He's a branding consultant whose work has influenced many of the best brands in the world, including Coca-Cola, Nike, Johnnie Walker, Gatorade, Old Spice, and many more. Follow Daryl on Twitter at @BrandedCortex. He can also be found on LinkedIn and http://www.daryl-weber.com/.   You'll Learn: How Daryl's fascination for the human condition led him to question how ads and marketing works on the brain. The disconnect and outright myths around consumer psychology and how the consumer mind works. Why brands struggle with trying to elicit emotion in their marketing. Why the way humans relate to brands isn't likely to change, regardless of the technology or medium. About the term heuristics and how cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias affects our decision-making.   3 Key Points: Brands are a collection of associations in consumer's minds. The human brain is and remains fundamentally unchanged from 100,000 years ago. We need to get smarter about connecting with the unconscious mind, which actually controls decision-making.    Killer Resources: Ready to go pro but aren't sure if College is the right choice for you? Follow Jacqui on Twitter at @jacquichew. She can also be found on LinkedIn, tedxpeachtree.com, and JacquiChew.com.   You'll Learn: How Jacqui transitioned from consumer packaged goods and lifestyle marketing to the start up space. How Jacqui's short time at SilverPop taught her the importance of understanding how business works and how customers think. Why marketers need to take on more strategic activities as chat bots, A.I. and other #MarTech take over the tactical activities. Why Jacqui feels humans have a threshold for noise and at some point they'll become numb to #InfluencerMarketing. Why using algorithmic technologies and A.I. to solve what is fundamentally a human problem is fraught with its dangers because algorithms are written by humans who have inherent biases.   3 Key Points: In marketing it's not about the push, but about the customer and finding that happy medium between a customer's wants and needs and a company's value proposition. Marketers need to be strategic and contextualize #MarTech to produce insight from big data. Humans have a threshold for noise. Not enough businesses realize structured data, brand knowledge and the way they're found is an issue. With Influencer Marketing vanity metrics are less important than the impact they drive to the bottom line.   3 Key Points: The singularity will happen in 2029, but there will still be a need for people to conceptualize what these robots are going to do. Something insidious is taking place in professional digital marketing that needs to be addressed. For a long time big business wasn't serious about digital marketing but now they are. As they dump their elephant dollars into the digital marketing echo system they're driving up the cost-per-click (CPC) and making pay-per-click advertising (PPC) less viable for small business. But it's not just corporate dollars but also corporate culture that is taking over. This is great from a professionalism standpoint, but not so great from a diversity standpoint. The corporate norms of a lack of ethnic diversity have persisted despite the free and open Internet we all espouse.   You'll Learn: The Internet being a place where anyone can make it is quickly becoming a myth. Corporate dollars and culture is quietly taking over the digital marketing landscape. Why digital marketing is becoming less viable for small business. Why the minority talent pool in pro digital marketing is so thin.   3 Key Points: Corporate elephant dollars are driving up CPCs and making paid advertising less viable for small business. Corporate culture is also taking over digital marketing, which is awesome from a professionalism standpoint, but terrible from a diversity standpoint. Why personalization in marketing trumps marketing technology on the horizon. Too many marketers treat influencers like a simple media buy while failing to actually build relationships with these people. The term fact news has been thrown around very irresponsibly by the Trump administration to the point it's almost meaningless. Please need to understand there are consequences for sharing unfounded material.   3 Key Points: Even though technology has changed drastically, human nature has remained constant. While a lot of lip service is given to customer centricity, brands need to do a better job of putting the customer at the center of everything they do. Marketers need to fundamentally understand their influencer market and actually spend time with them by joining their community.   Resources Mention:  Scott's website: http://www.scottmonty.com/ Scott's strategic executive consultancy: Brain Trust Partners   Killer Resources: Ready to go pro but aren't sure if College is the right choice for you? The epiphany Park had when he realized he had bought into the wrong story and what he did about it. Why Park believes storytelling is timeless, regardless of technology. The key ingredients that make up a compelling story.    3 Key Points: Don't live into anybody else's story but your own. Content marketing that doesn't tell a story that truly connects with people misses the point. The epiphany that made Jill switch from an educator to an entrepreneur. Why marketing is fundamentally based on human experience. The meaning of dynamic communication and why it's important. Just because we can scale doesn't mean we shouldn't focus on the individual. How confirmation bias and cognitive dissonance fed into our new reality of #FakeNews and #AlternativeFacts.   3 Key Points: Do multiple internships and take full advantage of being a student. Marketing fundamentally is about human experience. In the majority of cases large corporations are still years behind in terms of what is actually influential.   Resources Mention: Jill's new book: Dynamic Communication   Killer Resources: Ready to go pro but aren't sure if College is the right choice for you? He's been a founder of new ventures (NION Interactive, GamePlan, 44Doors) and a catalyst for innovative change within some of the world's largest brands (Dell, Bacardi, AMD, ExxonMobil, Hilton Worldwide, Kraft Foods, Edelman, and others).  Part social anthropologist, part strategic marketing executive, Tim studies communications behavior and how new media and mobility are reshaping all of business. From operations to marketing and customer service, he assembles technology, adoption and communications initiatives that lead to efficiency and profitability. Follow Tim on Twitter at @TheTimHayden. You can also follow his digital agency at @YouBrainTrust. He can also be found on LinkedIn, as well as Braintrust.partners.   You'll Learn: How Tim's experience producing events led him to a career in mobile. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water; new tech doesn't automatically kill off anything old. It's the human we're trying to reach not the screen. Why Tim believes Twitter is still the best place to connect. If you only have 5 minutes in the say, go to Convince & Convert.   3 Key Points:  Take more risks. You miss opportunity by being overly conservative. Digital marketing is not something that is strictly technologically driven. If Facebook is going to be a news source they are going to have to become responsible in a unbiased way with regard to the way people get their news.   Resources Mention: Tim's book: The Mobile Commerce Revolution Tim's agency: Brain Trust Partners Convinceandconvert.com   Killer Resources:  Ready to go pro but aren't sure if College is the right choice for you? Greg Verdino is the author of 'microMARKETING: Get Big Results by Thinking and Acting Small' (McGraw-Hill, 2010), and co-authored a chapter in 'Reinventing Interactive and Direct Marketing' (ed. Stan Rapp, McGraw-Hill, 2009). Over the years he's appeared in a wide range of media including Advertising Age, Bloomberg Business, CNN, Fox Business, Investor's Business Daily, the New York Times, Newsday, and the Wall Street Journal. He's written for the American Marketing Association, MediaPost, OMMA magazine, and his own blogs. Greg is also the managing partner at VERDINO & CO | A Content Consultancy. They help organizations craft smart content strategy and translate that into the creation of high quality (mostly digital) content that really works. He also rescues websites that no longer work for their owners. His clients have included FIS Global, MicroEdge+Blackbaud, Great Hill Partners, Campbell Soup Company, and several agencies that use us as their outsourced content strategy team. Follow Greg on Twitter at @GregVerdino, as well as his agency @verdino_co. He can also be found on LinkedIn, as well as GregVerdino.com and Verdino & Co.   You'll Learn:  How Greg went from sociology major to professional marketer. How his skills as a sociologist translates in today's social media landscape. How formal business education could have furthered Greg's career. Industry thought leaders are more accessible than ever. Nothing new ever seems to kill off anything old; it just changes forms. There needs to be more opportunities for marketers to think and act strategically.   3 Key Points:  Roll up your sleeves and get it done. A lot of digital marketing thought leadership is recycled; there doesn't seem to be enough institutional knowledge to get our thinking & strategy ahead. Many consumers of information have not been taught how to think critically and discern what's being put in front of them.   Resources Mention:  Greg's book: 'microMARKETING: Get Big Results by Thinking and Acting Small' (McGraw-Hill, 2010), Greg's personal site: GregVerdino.com Greg's content agency: Verdino & Co.   Killer Resources: Ready to go pro but aren't sure if College is the right choice for you?
