The “Playmate Killer”, Paul Snider, was the ex-husband of Playboy Model Dorothy Stratten. Snider was one of the creators of Chippendales, the male strip club chain, but he is most remembered as the killer of Stratten. Their marriage lasted barely a year. When Stratten developed a romantic relationship with acclaimed film director Peter Bogdanovich, Snider's jealousy led to murder-suicide. Stratten was killed by Snider in the Los Angeles apartment they had once shared. On the same day, Snider killed himself. Police believe he raped Stratten and sexually abused her corpse as his last twisted obsession of the Playmate of 1980. Like what you hear and want more true crime and mystery? The Twin Geekscast

Bogdanovich has claimed that the early months of 1980 were the happiest time of his life. He was in emphatic, unequivocal love with Playboy model Dorothy Stratten, and she was equally in love with him. Their blissful romance led to Bogdanovich dreaming up his next film, They All Laughed. Weaving together his affections for Stratten, the ongoing dissolution of her current marriage, and the recent affair shared by stars Ben Gazzara and Audrey Hepburn on their previous film together, Bogdanovich penned the most sincere expression of love he could, and set it against the swooning backdrop of New York City in the spring. Watching the film, it's evident the director was floating on cloud nine during its production, which only makes the dark aftermath of its construction all the more tragic. On August 13th, 1980, Dorothy Stratten was murdered by her estranged husband during a meeting about their divorce at his rented home in Los Angelos, before then taking his own life with the same gun shortly therafter. Upon hearing the news, Bogdanovich's life instantly fell apart, with many years of distraught grief and exceedingly poor life choices to follow. Just as his life and career were reaching a concurrent high, everything came crashing down. No studio was willing to touch They All Laughed in the wake of Stratten's death, and so Bogdanovich dug himself into debt buying the rights to the film and attempted to distribute it himself. Unsurprisingly, this did not go well. The film desperately floundered at the box office and Bogdanovich was forced to declare bankruptcy. The failure of They All Laughed, alongside a number of other auteur-driven flops at the same time, proved to be the final nail in the coffin of the New Hollywood renaissance of director-driven studio productions. Fortunately, the film has regained some traction thanks to a new generation of Hollywood auteurs, with the likes of Quinten Tarantino and Wes Anderson championing it as a masterwork in recent decades. Another hiatus followed suit, but by 1985 Bogdanovich was back at it, both because he needed to pick up the pieces and because he needed the money. When they were together, Dorothy expressed particular interest in the story of Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man. Bogdanovich pieced together her identification with him as an object of public attention, subjugated for their extreme looks – one radiant, the other malformed. This is what inspired Bogdanovich to make Mask, a biographical story of the similarly-stricken Rocky Dennis, and his struggle to live a normal life with a debilitating facial deformity. Mask was one of Bogdanovich's most successful films to date, being a big hit with both audiences and critics, as well as snagging some much-deserved awards for leading actress Cher at Cannes, as well an Academy Award for the incredible makeup effects used to believably transform Eric Stoltz into the afflicted young boy. Still strapped for cash (seriously, do not try to self-distribute your own movies), Bogdanovich was still operating as a director for hire. He found himself under the auspices of the rather notorious Dino De Laurentiis, whom Bogdanovich would later blame for the unmitigated failure of Illegally Yours. With a title tipping its name to a Preston Sturges classic, Bogdanovich was set to make a contemporary screwball comedy for the ‘80s in the same way he did in 1973 with What's Up, Doc? The commercial appeal of leading man Rob Lowe seemed to assure a hit, but a forced rewrite of the script and a hacked-up editing job seems to have ruined the picture's chances for success, and caused Bogdanovich enough grief to proclaim it as the worst film he ever made. In 1987 author Larry McMurty penned a follow-up novel to the beloved The Last Picture Show. Bogdanovich was then naturally in talks to direct the film adaptation of the story set some thirty years after the captivating narrative he first brought to theaters sixteen years earlier. Texasville reunited most of the original cast, including Jeff Bridges and Cybill Shepherd, who began as mere aspirants in Picture Show but were now bonafide stars. The story swaps its deconstruction of youthful angst for the mature interests of middle-aged malaise, investigating how the reverberations of the past reflect upon and impact the present. But without the same haunting cinematography and sense of place, not to mention the confidence of the studio behind him, Bogdanovich's film faltered yet again at the box office. It was a sad reminder of how the young protégé of Orson Welles, whose second feature was once heralded alongside the mighty Citizen Kane, had, much like the great director himself, fallen from the public's graces. No longer did his name command the same capital as once before, having only further ruined his reputation by constantly fighting with the studios in a vain attempt to regain his creative integrity.

Hello, discriminating soundcast listener! I AM Marc Hershon and this is Episode 291 of Succotash, the Comedy  Soundcast Soundcast. This installment is going to run a little longer than usual so I'm going to dispense with a lot of the blah-dee-blah-blah that I usually jabber away with at the top of the show so we can get right into the magic. I will take a moment to ask if you happened to catch last week's Epi290 with my enchanting co-host, the every-other-weekly-appearing Tyson Saner? He featured a triumvirate of tasty clips from the soundcasts known as Almost Viral with Simon the Magpie, Brian & Roger, and The Problem with Jon Stewart. Don't fret if it passed you by, as you can still snag a listen via Apple or Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Audible, Amazon Music, Podcast, YouTube, and our own homesite, SuccotashShow.com. (The one place you CAN'T catch it is Spotify because we're just not doing that these days…) This week I don't have soundcast clips for you because I'm too busy talking to soundcasters instead. First up I have a quick chat with J. Keith Van Straaten, co-host of Go Fact Yourself, the comedy gameshow soundcast he does with comedian Helen Hong. They are rounding on their 100th episode and are teaming up to do a live streaming version of the show you can watch on your computer on February 16th. So I invited him in to talk about that, and also ask how he is able to kick my ass so soundly in Scrabble. Then I talk with comedian, soundcaster, past guest and friend o' the show Matt Knudsen. Although we talk about his show, Grabbing Lunch, which is on a bit of a hiatus – thanks, COVID! – the main reason for his visit is to chat about his upcoming victory lap. He is running his 10th and final Los Angeles Marathon coming up on March 4th, and he is doing it to raise money (as he has done every year) for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. So Matt and I talk comedy, soundcasting, running, and how YOU can help him help some deserving kiddos get better through the efforts of St. Jude's. This week's episode is brought to you by a crossover sponsor: Empire State Gas, who is the regular advertiser for the Chillpak Hollywood Hour with Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness. Chillpak is starting their third season this week, which means they have moved to a new distributor, Subspace Radio, and to help them spread the word, Empire State Gas is spreading the wealth and dropping a spot on our show. Except they're not paying for it. I still don't get how this advertising thing works… I hope you enjoy my double sitdown. Back in this feed next week will be Tyson and some more soundcast clips. Or maybe HE'LL have a Succotash Chat. Who knows? I may have clips the week after that but I have some more awesome convos lined up, too, so it's hard to say exactly. What I DO know is that I'm hoping you take good care of yourself and others, try to abide by whatever crazy COVID rules your local health officials have going on right now, and if anyone happens to pass you in the liquor store and asks if you're listening to anything good lately, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

We're finishing up our series on Audrey Hepburn with one of her last roles, in Peter Bogdanovich's They All Laughed (1981). Hepburn plays Angela, the wife of a wealthy European businessman who has hired John Russo (Ben Gazarra) to spy on her out of suspicion of infidelity. Russo and Angela wind up becoming involved, however, which parallels Russo's colleague Charles (John Ritter) falling in love with the woman he is tailing, Dolores (Dorothy Stratten). All manner of other hijinks ensue, in a film that mixes screwball comedy with hardboiled noir and brings the trappings of Classic Hollywood to the 1980s. They All Laughed marked the tail end of Bogdanovich's most creative run, which began in the 1960s, and also coincided with the end of the 1970s halcyon period in which filmmakers were afforded an unprecedented level of freedom. It buckled under the burden of the tragedy that befell Stratten prior to the film's release, but in recent years and has been rediscovered as a minor classic. It's a key film for Bogdanovich, and Hepburn, despite not having a lot of screen time, brings a huge amount of gravitas and understated melancholy to her role.

“If you believe business is built on relationships, make building them your business.” — Scott Stratten Named one of the “Top 5 Social Media Influencers of the World” by Forbes Magazine, best-selling author Scott Stratten began developing the concept of “unmarketing” as a band manager and promoter in Toronto. However, it wasn’t until the recession that he honed his message and became the leading expert on digital and social media marketing. In this episode, Brian interviews Scott and delves into how a chance viewing of a Les Brown speech inspired him to get into motivational speaking, his early career in human resources and what led him to turn traditional marketing and selling strategies on their head and cultivate the ‘un’: unmarketing, unbranding and unselling. You’ll learn several strategies for building a following on social media, the dos and don’ts of promoting in your relationships and how great service separates you from your competition, both big and small. By the end of the episode, you’ll have the tools to connect better on all levels with your clients.   Inspirational quotes from today’s interview: “All marketing was push and pray. Mine was pull and stay.” — Scott Stratten “Are we storytellers or teachers?” — Scott Stratten “If you make enough noise, people will come calling.” — Scott Stratten “The community will wrap themselves around you when they think you’re one of them.” — Scott Stratten “You’ve got to invest in people before you make a withdrawal.” — Brian Buffini “Networking is the long term.” — Scott Stratten “I want to be the catalyst for conversation.” — Scott Stratten “Go with your grain. Know what works for you.” — Scott Stratten “I want to heighten my strengths. I’ll outsource my weaknesses.” — Scott Stratten “Just because you’ve done it doesn’t mean you’ve done it right” — Scott Stratten “If you want to make your business big, you need to make your focus small.” — Brian Buffini “If the number one driver of your business is referrals, you increase your referrals by making yourself more referable.” — Scott Stratten “You can’t outspend and out-innovate a big brand, but you can out-service them.” — Scott Stratten “Make your focus to connect as strongly as possible to people.” — Scott Stratten “If you just listen, you’ve already separated yourself.” — Scott Stratten   Learn more about Scott Stratten Website: http://www.unmarketing.com/ Podcast: UnPodcast Books by Scott Stratten: UnMarketing, UnBranding, UnSelling   Mentioned in the episode: Simon Sinek—Leaders Eat Last Permission Marketing—Seth Godin The 50 Inventions that Shaped the Modern Economy by Tim Harford Messy by Tim Harford How to Never Lose a Customer Again by Joey Coleman   Connect with Brian Buffini http://www.brianbuffini.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brianbuffini Twitter: https://twitter.com/brianbuffini Buffini Show Insiders: http://www.thebrianbuffinishow.com/insiders Love what you heard? Why Alison feels often times there's more to learn from train-wrecks when things go badly wrong as opposed to when they went right. Why she feels overly focusing on new technology can take away from creating value for your customers. Technology is just a tool. The relationship between brand and influencer is complex. It takes more than metrics. It takes a hard discussion about values. You can't put a flashy campaign on something that's worthless and expect it all to work out.   3 Key Points: Success doesn't have a specific measure. Don't be intimidated or overly concerned with ten steps down the road. Enjoy the journey you're on. Focus on loyalty, not new technology. Quality will always trump convenience. Social Media metrics alone (followers, likes etc.) are easy to manipulate and shouldn't be the only way to evaluate Influencers.   Get New Show Alters in Facebook Messenger! Welcome to episode #416 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. I had heard of Jason SurfrApp before, only that wasn't his name. The last time I had heard of him, his name was Jason Headsetsdotcom (not kidding). That right, Jason had done this before. He had legally changed his last name to the highest bidder... and he had done it again. Call it a stunt. Call it unconventional, but Jason has a knack for this kind of marketing... or entrepreneurship (depends on how you slice it). He created IWearYourShirt, a company that used sponsored t-shirts to promote businesses on social media and turned it into a million dollar business (not a typo). He took the same approach to the recent publishing of his business book, Creativity For Sale. Frustrated by the landscape of book publishers and book agents, Jason self-published and raised over $75,000 through sponsorships in the book before a single word was written or a single copy of the book sold. If you know anything about book advances and business book sales numbers, that's not a bad amount (at all). The Unmarketing hero, Scott Stratten, took to Facebook to record a video about how personalized Jason's pitch to Scott was. Stratten's video was so compelling that I invited Jason to talk about how he sees marketing, and what stunts look like in a world with so much noise. Enjoy the conversation... Scott explains his choice between self-publishing and traditional publishing for his books. His publisher, Wiley, got him in front of people, on bookshelves, distribution and exposure to networks and conferences. Scott makes his living from keynote speaking. UnMarketing is used as a textbook in forty universities including Harvard, Columbia, and University of West of Scotland. He used a specific email address in his books to understand where people were coming from. Great idea. Ready to write a book? Ask yourself, “What do I want from a book?” There is no way you'll make much money by going with a traditional publisher. Publishers want large audiences. Their job is to sell a lot of books. Scott got his start working in marketing in the music industry. Scott began by self-publishing a book called TGIM: Thank Goodness it's Monday. It took him five years to write and publish it. It's easier to write a book with deadlines (I can agree with this!) If you ever see a friend's book at a store. Be sure to give it great placement to help. How can we position ourselves as experts? It's all about networking. “The fundamental about networking is connection before commerce.” We do business with people we know, like and trust. You can network with people who would be your competitors if they lived in the same city. “If we have no threat geographically to each other, that opens up even more of a trust in a networking space.” For 7 or 8 years, Scott created viral videos (he apologized for using the term). This was before YouTube. They were created to build email lists. In 2009, Scott gave Twitter a second try - a final shot. He lived on Twitter for 30 days, and tweeted 7,000 times in one month. He went from 1,200 followers to 10,000! Scott did a great job with his keynote during New Media Expo this year.  Airplane with QR code. “If I stop one person from putting a QR code on a urinal, I've done my job.” My silly QR code. Scott critiqued 3-400 presentations each semester when he was a professor at Sheridan College. He learned that it is not about them, it's about the content. “The people sitting in the audience want value. They want content they can learn from.” Use three takeaways. “The best way to sell is to teach.” Respect your listener's time. QR codes on business cards. Good idea? Bad idea? Scott shares his thinking on this. “The job of a networking event isn't to see how many cards you can give out. It's to give out as few as possible to those you only connect with.” Scott has garnered more than 165,000 Twitter followers since April 8, 2008. We talk about how Twitter has changed since 2008. He explains how he doesn't like it as much now. “We create our own noise.” His biggest social media mistake was accepting every friend and follower request early-on. How to use Twitter Lists. Scott uses TweetBot. He mutes certain automation apps. Now he sees live, real-time tweets. Scott talks about how finds and shares so much great content. His entire purpose in life is to stay on top of what's going on and to have an opinion about it. We talk about podcasting.  They podcast by renting a studio and live video the recordings. I love my podcast listeners (that's you :) Scott recommends my book (thanks Scott!). New Business Networking: How to Effectively Grow Your Business Network Using Online and Offline Methods (Que Biz-Tech).
