This Week I Flashback.......The Soul Survivors, originally from New York City, grew up listening to the R & B groups of the 1950's. The sounds of groups like the Moonglows, Heartbeats, and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers had a great influence on brothers Charlie and Rich Ingui. With various street corner groups, they developed their vocal skills. While in high school, Charlie joined the vocal group from Queens, N.Y. the Dedications. When, a year later the group's lead singer decided to leave, brother Rich was recruited. While performing at clubs in the New York area, they found themselves at the mercy of various house bands and decided to find a group of musicians who would become permanent members of the group therefore creating a self contained unit. The group would be renamed THE SOUL SURVIVORS.Shortly thereafter, the group began to build a strong following, playing venues in Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Enjoying great success in Philadelphia, they attracted the attention of record producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Into the recording studio they went, emerging with " Expressway To Your Heart " a song that would climb to #3 on Billboard's R&B chart and #4 on it's Top 100 list. The success of " Expressway " became Gamble and Huff's first "crossover" hit when it began to be played on both black and white radio stations. It's success enabled Gamble and Huff to reach the large audiences they sought in order to bring their " Sound Of Philadelphia " to the mass Market. In polls taken by both the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia's City Paper, " Expressway" was voted the number one record ever to come out of Philadelphia. "Expressway " was followed by two other chart records, "Explosion In My Soul" and " Mission Impossible". Their first album, released in 1968, was " When The Whistle Blows ". A second LP, on Atco Records, called "Take Another Look" appeared in 1969.During this time, the group toured extensively throughout the U.S. appearing with many different types of artists...everyone from Jackie Wilson, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles to Janis Joplin, the Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, Sly and the Family Stone and countless others. In 1974, the Soul Survivors reunited with Gamble and Huff to record their self titled album "The Soul Survivors" on TSOP Records. It was written and performed in a style that would define the unique sound of The Soul Survivors. The album produced "City Of Brotherly Love" which would show up on Billboard's R&B Top 100 and become the group's fourth charted outing.© 2024 All Rights Reserved© 2024 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Suivront les albums “Made In Dakar” (2007), ou encore “Tribute To Ndiouga Dieng” (2017). Suivront les albums “Made In Dakar” (2007), ou encore “Tribute To Ndiouga Dieng” (2017). Baobab est donc de ces groupes qui, comme le Baobab, ne meurent jamais. Hébergé par Acast. The group would be renamed THE SOUL SURVIVORS. Shortly thereafter, the group began to build a strong following, playing venues in Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Join Anna and Bronkar as they tak about all things possible when "setting your tone". This is a conversation that will make a difference!! Bronkar has always been deeply fascinated by music and sound — the effects it can have on our physiology, the power it has to change our attitudes, and the potential it has to connect humans together in positive ways. He plays multiple instruments (including drums, saxophone, guitar, Native American flute, and voice) which he’s incorporated into live performances and presentations for over 20 years, weaving them seamlessly into powerful techniques for improving communication, collaboration, and creativity. Bronkar’s desire to produce, coach, and collaborate has led him to form multiple performance groups including duo show Collision of Rhythm, 4-man variety show Bounce, and even fronting the rock band All Styles to Groove. In 2014, Bronkar collaborated with original STOMP member and Blue Man Group coach Ameenah Kaplan to create Raditatical — a multimedia-filled, rhythm-based theatrical show with a 6-person cast that enjoyed success at the Ricardo Montalban Theater in Hollywood. Most recently, Bronkar collaborated with his wife Cyndi Harvell Lee to write the book BAM: Bold Achievement Method, outlining his 6-step process for accelerated learning. They used the methodology to complete the book and (most importantly) in raising their sons, Elijah and Niko. They are currently working on their second book. Bronkar's unique background includes touring Europe as ringmaster to a world-renowned circus, appearing with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show, and beatboxing with his 18-month old son, Elijah, in a viral video that received over 125 Million views. Pulling from these vastly different experiences, Bronkar provides a refreshing perspective on how to lead with confidence, clarity and purpose — regardless of job title.

ES016: Voice Science and Artistry with Dr. Ingo Titze

Every Sing

Ever wonder if voice science takes the artistry and joy out of music? Tune in to hear about this from Dr. Titze, who a big part of the foundation of modern voice science. I think of him as our Albert Einstein.  He is the director of the National Center for Voice and Speech (NCVS) and President of the Pan American Vocology Assoiation. He has tenured professorship at the Univ. of Iowa, where he is teaching this semester, and teaches at the University of Utah.   The Conversation   Dr. Titze says his passion is to cover the whole territory of voice. But the field has gotten so big that it is difficult for him to do; music, theater voice, laryngology, speech pathology, and so on. Now one has to make some choices. The field now includes biologists, physiologist, engineers, and physicists. They try to serve the physicians. Also the field of neurology is exploding. NCVS works with Rachelle and Renee Fleming with what goes on in the airway for production of various different styles of sing.   Dr. Titze started down this road over 40 years ago, after starting a career at Boeing in engineering. He was studying singing and performing in the chorus of the Seattle Opera. In searching for a way to learn more about the science of singing, and following his passion for singing, he found that very little work had been done. There was very little knowledge of how the voice works. He sought out Harvey Fletcher, acoustician, at BYU in Provo, UT, who developed stereophonic sound for Bell Laboratories. He also worked with Bill Strong at BYU.   We took a side-trip to the story of his father, who was a German soldier in WWII. It is a touching story of his father who had to fire in the direction of Russian soldiers but was proud that he didn't think he ever shot anyone. Dr. Titze's father enjoyed talking about the community that soldiers from opposite sides of the war would occasionally have the opportunity to make. He was miraculously rescued after being shot. After the war the family was very poor and moved to the US in 1955 for a new chance.    Back on topic, if a person wants to get into voice science, they need to be willing to devote their focus to it as an engineer, or if not an engineer then to humbly jump in with a program like the NCVS Summer Vocology Institute, and learn as much science as they can in order to serve a team. Behavior sciences and neurosciences are also welcome. He says to, "keep in mind that we are all neophytes in something."   NCVS started in Denver as a bigger group than it is now. It has gotten smaller because of grants. A big part of their focus is education. They are largely funded by the National Institute of Health.    Dr. Titze gave a definition of the word Vocology. 1. The study of vocalization of any type and any animal. 2. The science and practice of voice habilitation. The Pan American Vocology (PAVA) is discussing creating credentials for a PAVA recognized vocologist.   In the area of the aging voice, Dr. Titze had a lot of advice for older singers (everyone post-midlife). The voice is always changing throughout life, and after midlife it requires more upkeep for various reasons such as atrophy, slow reflexes, tremors, hydration, arthritis, and stamina. He recommends that older singers sing frequently but not for very long, perhaps 15 min. at a time. In a choral rehearsal, singers often only need to sing for 15 min. here and 15 min. there, with breaks between.   He highly recommends semi-occluded vocal track exercises. Singing through a straw and doing slides and sirens. Learn more about the exercises from this video by Dr. Titze.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xYDvwvmBIM   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY_UnMI5Y-WIONNHdW8WJGA is the site for all NCVS videos.    Human voices are generally at their prime for singing around ages 45 - 50 when the cartilage has reached more calcification but the vocal ligament is still very flexible.   The vocal ligament is the cord part of the old term Vocal Cord. We now call them Vocal Folds to consider the skin on the outside, the lamina propria, ligament, and muscle. He likes to call the vocal folds a Fiber-Gel model. They are good at withstanding the thousands of collisions we have each minute while making sound. High pitches are controlled by the ligament, so keeping it healthy is important for a good voice in later years.   Regarding hydration, know the environment you are going to sing in. If you change environments (altitude or dryness) allow at least two days to sense the change. Drinking extra water during a climate adjustment doesn't really help that much because you pass it out quickly. It takes time to adjust.   He is not a big fan of personal steamers and such, because the effects only last 20 min. or so. He is a fan of Mucinex and expectorants to create mucus. The "object is to sniffle!"    Dr. Titze encourages engineers who have a passion for music to make room for it in their lives and pursue letting emotions go with singing. Dr. Titze greatly admired tenor, Fitz Wundelich but has found that opera singing doesn't work well with his voice. "At some point you have to stop putting your voice in a song and start putting the song in your voice."   Samples of Dr. Titze's singing are at NCVS.org under his biography.   Give Every Sing an iTunes review and contact Nancy so she can send you a free audiobook of her Amazon bestselling book, Singing 101: Vocal Basics and Fundamental Singing Skills for All Styles and Abilities. Roland-TR808 and Afro obsessed duo Africaine 808 conjure up the sort of loose limbed, tightly programmed drum based grooves that are aimed directly at your body. Made up of Berlin based Dirk Leyers and Nomad, they most often do so on Golf Channel Recordings and imbue thousands of years of rhythm history into their own borderless sounds. “No Rules. No Bullshit. All Styles,” is their own apt mantra, and they recently stuck to it when playing live at Dekmantel Festival 2016. We have a recording of what went down and it makes up this week’s podcast. Across one impossible to categorise hour they weaved their own unique tapestry of steel drums and rubbery kicks, skittish toms and squeaking synths. Fluid and evolving with a life of its own at every turn, the set is a testament to their ability to play with and coax all manner of sounds out of their machines. At times dark and high pressure, at others laid back and full of sun, it was one of many highlights and we are proud to be able to relive those moments with you again now.
