It's easy for Black children growing up in America to name their favorite athlete, pop star and actor but what about their favorite author? All children grow up aspiring to be like the person they idolize, but if children do not see themselves reflected in literature how can they make that connection? With school back in session, there's no better time for a conversation about the importance of literacy for Black children. Award-winning children's book author, literacy advocate and motivational speaker Ty Allan Jackson joins Tavis to shed light on the crucial role of representation in literature and the impact it has on inspiring young minds.

"I may not have all the answers but I'm sure there's a book that does." Those were, among many more, some of my father's memorable words of wisdom. Whenever my siblings and I would come to him with a question beyond his impressive knowledge, with those words, he was simply nudging us to get resourceful and just figure it out. And 'figuring it out' often meant digging and researching within the incredible amount of books he had on every conceivable topic. No joke. This eventually led to a serious love for books and thirst for knowledge that has stayed with us to this day. These are the kind of powerful anecdotes that my next guest truly resonates with as his passion for the wonders and rewards that stem from the love of reading are summed up in his personal slogan : Read or Else. Ty Allan Jackson is an award-winning children's book author, youth motivational speaker, literacy advocate, and honorary Doctorate recipient. Jackson's self-published books have been featured on CNN, NBC Nightly News, The Steve Harvey Show, PBS, and the Hallmark Channel. In 2020, he appeared on Marvel's Hero Project on Disney+ and a Good Morning America segment featuring Sidney Keys, a young man who was inspired by Jackson's book Danny Dollar Millionaire Extraordinaire: The Lemonade Escapade to create an innovative book club for Black boys. Ty is also the cofounder of the Read or Else movement and the financial literacy program, the Danny Dollar Academy. Inspiration personified. Ty Allan Jackson's relentless optimism and grit was molded into his soul growing up in the Bronx, during an electric era of scary excitement. "I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything in the world," Ty says about his youth in the Bronx, when hip-hop was conceived, the Yankees were rock stars, and he followed his loving mother's footsteps (and bookshelf) as a "ferocious reader." It would be decades later when he found his true calling when he discovered that there was no published book to adequately support his son's entrepreneurial spirit. This, following an auspicious opening of his lemonade stand at the corner of Dexter and Elm Street. Just as the Bronx forged his core, he credits the Berkshires and Pittsfield for facilitating his success as an author, calling it a "magical" place. "What you do here makes a difference." We cover a lot of territory in this conversation, including: Ty's professional career before becoming an author, working in sales, the early days of hip-hop culture in the Bronx, the world champion Bronx Bombers (Ty can still name the starting lineup of the '77 squad), his early reading, beginning with Native Son by Richard Wright, getting rejected by every single publishing company and then self-publishing, the remarkable lack of financial literacy in U.S. public schools (and how is this possible?), Read or Else, Noelle Santos and The Lit. Bar, organic reach with Instagram Reels, effectively utilizing social media to convert volume to sales, creating the mindset needed to consistently create content, receiving a doctorate from Mass. College of LIberal Arts, taking the leap from a stable corporate job to an independent author, and much more. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Ty Allan Jackson. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-krol/support

Looking for a little local inspiration? Listen to my chat with activist and children's book author Ty Allan Jackson, the force behind Read or Else, the Danny Dollar Academy, and six children's books.
Javvon was living the life of a normal middle-schooler. He had an annoying little sister, a loyal best friend, his first crush, and of course, daily encounters with the school bully. Normal, right? That's until Javvon acquired super powers and went on a mission to protect his neighborhood, save the occasional stray cat, and take down his arch nemesis. This seems like a normal day for THE SUPADUPA KID as longs as he gets home in time to complete his homework.
Call it serendipity. Who knew that Ty Allan Jackson's son setting up a successful lemonade stand would set in motion an amazing sequence of events? A fruitless trip to a book store in search of a kid's book about money led to Ty writing that book. When outreach to 147 publishers came up empty, Ty persisted and went the self-publishing route. Later, Abdullah would reach out to Ty and the collaboration would lead to a curriculum built around the Danny Dollar Millionaire Extraordinaire book. Listen to this podcast to hear this story and more. Enjoy!
In this episode, we talk about left politics in country music with Prof. Mark Allan Jackson. Country music has a huge popular following and has been closely associated with Republican and socially conservative political forces. Politicians like George Wallace, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan have all appealed to country's fans to build their political bases. But country music has also had a populist left appeal as well. From Nashville to Bakersfield, CA, country musicians have espoused progressive political positions as well in lyrics and activism. Scott and Bob, with Professor Jackson, look at the cultural and political importance of country music and the artists. We get into how Nixon's southern strategy took Tricky Dick to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, the outlaw politics of icons like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, the progressive politics of Dolly Parton, John Prine's career, the political activism of contemporary artists like the Chicks and Garth Brook's appeals for unity in today's divided political atmosphere. Mark Allan Jackson is a professor of English at Middle Tennessee State University. He teaches courses on American Literature, Popular Culture, Folklore, and American Song. In 2007, He published Prophet Singer: The Voice and Vision of Woody Guthrie. He is the editor of and a contributor to the essay collection The Honky Tonk on the Left: Progressive Thought in Country Music (2018). In addition, he compiled, edited, and produced several CDs through West Virginia University Press, including Coal Digging Blues: Songs of West Virginia Miners.
