Hours earlier, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred outlined a months-long approval process for the A’s proposed move there. The $1.5 billion stadium with a retractable roof is planned near the homes of the NFL’s Vegas Raiders and the NHL’s Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup this week in just their sixth season. It wants to determine whether last week’s surprise deal violates federal antitrust statutes. The Justice Department already was looking into any antitrust issues involving the PGA Tour and Saudi-funded LIV Golf. Both golf leagues are involved in an antitrust case now in federal court. The agreement would end that litigation. The deal is for the PGA Tour, European tour and Saudi’s national wealth fund to pool commercial businesses in a new for-profit company. Miami police did not respond when asked Thursday evening whether they were investigating. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 8, Minnesota Twins 4 Chicago Cubs 7, Pittsburgh Pirates 2 Los Angeles Dodgers 5, Chicago White Sox 4 – F/11 Tigers 8, Twins 4 – Tigers beat Twins 8-4 for second victory in 13 games Javier Báez and Spencer Torkelson each had two hits and drove in two runs to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 8-4 on Thursday night for just their second victory in 13 games. Matt Vierling was 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI for the Tigers. Matthew Boyd (4-5) survived a four-run second inning for the victory. He walked one and struck out eight over six innings. Donovan Solano homered for the Twins, who had won four of their previous five. Relievers Will Vest, Jason Foley and Alex Lange each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the Twins, who went 2 for 23 after Solano’s home run in the second inning gave them a 4-1 lead. Cubs 7, Pirates 2 – Stroman, Happ, Morel help Cubs beat Pirates 7-2 for a series sweep Marcus Stroman threw six effective innings for his sixth straight victory and the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2 on Thursday night for a three-game sweep. Stroman (8-4) allowed four hits and struck out five while walking two in his MLB-leading 13th quality start. Ian Happ had a triple, double and single and drove in two runs, and Christopher Morel went 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs. Cody Bellinger laced an RBI double in Chicago’s five-run fifth inning after missing a month because of a bruised left knee. Nico Hoerner had two hits. The Cubs outscored the Pirates 28-11 in the series. Pittsburgh, still in first place in the NL Central at 34-33, has dropped four of five. Dodgers 5, White Sox 4 – F/11 – Freeman wins it in the 11th as the Dodgers edge the White Sox 5-4 Freddie Freeman singled to deep center field with the bases loaded in the 11th inning, Chris Taylor hit a tying grand slam in the sixth, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4. Luis Robert Jr. was playing in shallow center and never moved a muscle on Freeman’s game-winning hit that landed on the warning track. Freeman had been hitless in the three-game series until helping the Dodgers avoid losing a fourth consecutive series. It was their fourth walk-off win of the season. The White Sox got back-to-back homers by Robert and Eloy Jimenez in the first and by Jake Burger and Andrew Vaughn in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Joe Lombardo has signed into law a $380 million public financing package to help build a Major League Baseball stadium for the Oakland Athletics on the Las Vegas Strip. He signed the bill Thursday in Carson City a day after the Democrat-controlled legislature approved the plans. Hours earlier, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred outlined a months-long approval process for the A’s proposed move there. The $1.5 billion stadium with a retractable roof is planned near the homes of the NFL’s Vegas Raiders and the NHL’s Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup this week in just their sixth season. MLB – MLB to start months-long approval process for Oakland A’s move to Las Vegas Major League Baseball laid out a detailed process to approve the Oakland Athletics’ move to Las Vegas, which appears set to become the second shift of a franchise in the last half-century. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred says: “I feel sorry for the fans in Oakland. I do not like this outcome." A day after the Nevada Legislature approved public funding, Manfred said Oakland will file a relocation application and he will establish a relocation committee, which would define operating territory and broadcast territory. That group will make a recommendation that will go the sport’s executive council and then to full ownership. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Last Night Indiana Fever 92, Chicago Sky 90 Fever 92, Sky 90 – Mitchell sinks game-winning jumper, Fever beat short-handed Sky 92-90 Kelsey Mitchell sank a step-back jumper with 1.1 seconds left and the Indiana Fever beat the short-handed Chicago Sky 92-90. Indiana won consecutive games for the first time since May 2022. Rookie Aliyah Boston, who had 25 points and 11 rebounds on June 6 against Chicago, finished with 19 points and eight rebounds for Indiana (4-6). Victoria Vivians added 17 points and Mitchell and Smith each scored 15.  Chicago was without its leading scorer Kahleah Copper due to personal reasons.  Marina Mabrey scored 19 of her career-high 37 points in the 3rd quarter for the Sky. Golf – PGA – Fowler, Schauffele break US Open record with 62s at L.A. Country Club Rickie Fowler is the first player in U.S. Open history with a 62. He held that record for all of 15 minutes until Xander Schauffele joined him. It was an extraordinary morning for the so-called toughest test in golf. Fowler had 10 birdies and finished his round with a two-putt par from just inside 60 feet. Schauffele was two groups behind him and played bogey-free. They settled for their place in the record book. Dustin Johnson and Wyndham Clark played in the afternoon and each shot 64 to get within two shots of the record-breaking duo. Rory McIlroy and Brian Harman finished three shots off the lead. Golf – PGA – Justice Department looking into PGA Tour deal with LIV’s Saudi backers, A person familiar with the matter says the Justice Department is looking into an agreement between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabian backers of LIV Golf. It wants to determine whether last week’s surprise deal violates federal antitrust statutes. The Justice Department already was looking into any antitrust issues involving the PGA Tour and Saudi-funded LIV Golf. Both golf leagues are involved in an antitrust case now in federal court. The agreement would end that litigation. The deal is for the PGA Tour, European tour and Saudi’s national wealth fund to pool commercial businesses in a new for-profit company. Golf – LPGA – Defending champion Jennifer Kupcho tied for LPGA Tour lead in Michigan Defending champion Jennifer Kupcho birdied the par-5 18th for a 6-under 66 and a share of the first-round lead Thursday in the Meijer LPGA Classic. Kupcho birdied four of the five par-5 holes in a bogey-free round at Blythefield Country Club. She was tied with Ayaka Furue, Frida Kinhult, Lindsey Weaver-Wright and Cheyenne Knight. Ally Ewing was a stroke back at 67 with Amy Yang, Emily Kristine Pedersen, Alison Lee and Eun-Hee Ji. Ashleigh Buhai, the ShopRite LPGA Classic winner last week in New Jersey, and Minjee Lee topped the group at 68. NBA – Conor McGregor accused of sexual assault at an NBA Finals game in Miami The NBA and the Miami Heat are investigating an allegation that former UFC champion Conor McGregor sexually assaulted a woman inside an arena bathroom after Game 4 of the NBA Finals. The woman’s attorney, Ariel Mitchell, said her client has provided Miami police with the clothing she was wearing that night and that a report was filed. Miami police did not respond when asked Thursday evening whether they were investigating. McGregor’s attorney, Barbara Llanes, says her client denies wrongdoing and “will not be intimidated.” Soccer – US 3-0 win over Mexico cut short by homophobic chants on night of 4 red cards Four players were ejected and the match was cut short by the referee after repeated homophobic chants. The United States’ 3-0 win over Mexico for a spot in Sunday’s CONCACAF Nations League final against Canada will be remembered as much for the ugliness as for two goals by Christian Pulisic and one by Ricardo Pepi. Americans Weston McKennie and Sergiño Dest were ejected by Salvadoran referee Iván Barton along with Mexicans César Montes and Gerardo Arteaga during the second half. Play was halted in the 90th minute because of homophobic chants by Mexican fans, then stopped again with four minutes of stoppage time left. Ally Ewing is a professional golfer on the LPGA Tour. She played college golf at Mississippi State University where she won five events including the Mississippi State Amateur twice and the North and South Women's Amateur. She played on the winning U.S. teams in the 2013 Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship and the 2014 Curtis Cup. In October 2020, Ewing won won her first LPGA victory, winning the LPGA Drive On Championship. In May 2021, she won the Bank of Hope LPGA Match-Play at Shadow Creek Golf Course in North Las Vegas, Nevada. She was a member of the United States team at the Solheim Cup in 2019 and 2021.  Today on the podcast, we talk to Ally Ewing about balancing marriage and golf, the influence her parents had on her faith and finding her identity in Jesus Christ and not in golf. On this week's edition we look back at the Irish Challenge at Portmarnock Links where, although no fans could see it, there were plenty of Irish eyes smiling as Dermot McElroy lifted the Christy O'Connor Jnr trophy as the top home player in Dublin. Interestingly, McElroy, along with the Ireland's other leading players on the week, Michael Hoey, Cameron Raymond and Tom McKibbin will not benefit from Team Ireland funding in 2021. We discuss the merits of that system and also round-up all the action from across the tours with Leona Maguire beaten by eventual champion Ally Ewing in the LPGA Match-Play while we also look ahead to Stephanie Meadow competing at this week's US Women's Open.
