Daria Dawson joins The Great Battlefield podcast to talk about her career in politics and her role at America Votes, where they work to coordinate efforts to increase voter participation and advocate for fair elections.
And so the great election meltdown that was supposed to happen didn't – across America this week, tens of millions of voters going about their business in a seemingly orderly fashion, with a decisive outcome favoring one presidential candidate and his party. In this, the third of a four-part series on election integrity, Ben Ginsberg, the Hoover Institution's Volker Distinguished Visiting Fellow and a preeminent authority on election law, joins Hoover distinguished policy fellow Bill Whalen to discuss how voting played out on Election Day in America – results that surprised Ben, how different systems and vote-counting processes held up in battleground states, plus what election reforms a new Congress might want to pursue in 2025 (translation: requiring identification, greater uniformity and addressing non-citizen voting). Recorded on November 7, 2024
Entering the arena of US ElectionTakes™ now that I've finally gotten over the initial shock. There are of course multiple lenses to look at the results through and many ways to interpret what went wrong. I've seen people suggest the main factors are racism/sexism… while others say the main issue was The Dems' failure to speak to financial pain, currently felt across the nation. I say…why not both? These things are often connected - throughout history we've seen fascism rise in times of economic woes. — Subscribe via Patreon.com/nicemangos to access the extended episode. At the centre of the Global American empire, a storm is coming. But it's in the European periphery that the effects will be the most acute. Can anyone steer a path through the rocks? We'll be looking at chaos in the German auto industry - as Volkswagen overruns its cost budget by 20 per cent. At chaos in the European Union - as a heavily dug-in Von der Leyen regime goes full bunker mentality. And chaos in merrie ol' England, as the wet wobbler Keir Starmer brings down the final curtain on the Special Relationship. Between one world and the next, between a rock and a hard place, it is America that decides, but it is Europe that is going to have to choose a new future.

Judging by the way Latin America is discussed in the U.S. presidential elections, Americans view the continent mostly in negative terms: as the source of unwanted immigration and drug cartels. But the reality is obviously more complex. The region includes America's largest trading partner—Mexico—and it is an arena for intense geopolitical competition. In the fourth episode of FP Live's special election series, host Ravi Agrawal asks Moisés Naím, a former Venezuelan minister of trade and industry, and Catherine Osborn, the writer of FP's Latin America Brief, how Trump and Harris differ on policy. In the dead of night, charity workers head into the Arizona desert, with food and water for migrants trying to cross into the U.S. Not far away, a rancher says the people he sees constantly crossing his land are criminals. And an undocumented family shares what life is like for them, from running a small business to getting their kids into college, without immigration status. Matt Galloway travels to Arizona to meet these people and other voters, and learn why the border has become a flashpoint in this swing state — one that could decide who wins the looming U.S. election.
There's a lot at stake for Americans in this election and that's also true for Canadians - America's closest ally and largest trading partner. On this podcast you'll hear from callers on both sides of the border, across Canada and the United States. Our question: What's at stake for you in the US Election? This is “America Votes: A Cross Border Conversation" - a co-production between CBC, The Middle, and WDET in Detroit.
Daria Dawson is the Executive Director of America Votes, which coordinates more than 400 partners to engage and mobilize voters for elections up and down the ballot across the country. We discuss why 2024 is - yet again - the most important election of our lifetimes. The biggest threat to American democracy is fascism and thus the most important issue in this election is preserving our democracy. Of course, democracy and protecting democracy is a process and never just one election. The top priority for America Votes this year is electing leaders who are committed to protecting the foundations of our democratic system, so that our voices can continue to be heard and counted. Every vote matters. Elections have been won or lost on the margins, so it's imperative that everyone turns out to vote. The past week has been tough. The presidential debate did not exactly go as we hoped. The Supreme Court ruled that Trump has absolute immunity for “official acts” as President. But all of that only makes the election in November more crucial. The choice is literally between a dictatorship and a democracy, and it's essential that we encourage everyone we know to vote. Which brings us to our interview of the week: Daria Dawson, the Executive Director of America Votes. Daria explains why our vote is so important – if it wasn't, why are some trying so hard to suppress it? – and how getting out the vote, or rather “spreading out the vote,” will help us keep our democracy this year. If you want more details about Project 2025, we encourage you to check out our info page here. Tensions are elevated as protests continue in Israel and Trump is scrambling for cash. This week, former Senator Claire McCaskill and former White House Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri offer Team Biden the strategy of walking and chewing gum at the same time. Then, Daria Dawson, Executive Director of America Votes, joins to highlight how the organization is working to mobilize voters this fall. Lastly, Claire and Jen break down the ripple effects both Florida Supreme Court decisions will have on abortion access, now and in the longer term. The stakes are incredibly high for reproductive rights. Content warning: In this episode, there is discussion about the rape and incest exceptions in the Florida six-week abortion ban that might be triggering for some listeners, so please listen with care. For further reading: Here is a map showing where reproductive rights stand, state by state. And here is the Vanity Fair article Jen was talking about: Inside the Terrifyingly Competent Trump 2024 Campaign.
Florida's Supreme Court just greenlit a ballot measure to enshrine abortion in the state constitution—and simultaneously allowed the GOP's new six-week abortion ban to become law. That makes the already-high stakes for this amendment even higher, as we discuss on this week's episode of The Downballot. Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard also talk about the death of New Jersey's infamous "county line" and how the GOP managed to pick yet another whackjob candidate for yet another congressional special election. Our guest this week is Daria Dawson, the executive director of America Votes, an organization that forms a crucial piece of infrastructure for the progressive moment. As Dawson explains, America Votes plays the role of "traffic cop" to ensure that its 400 partners don't duplicate each other's work—and that the right groups communicate with the right voters. She also emphasizes that Democratic candidates need to affirmatively tie themselves to ballot measures protecting abortion rights and says that voting rights are key to differentiating between the parties when talking to voters.

The episode kicks off with an in-depth look at Super Tuesday, as 16 US states prepare for a significant day at the polls, marking a crucial point in the political calendar. The focus then shifts to Africa, where we uncover the clandestine activities of Vladimir Putin's spies and saboteurs, revealing their intricate plans to manipulate illegal migrants as tools of conflict against Europe and the United States. The global roundup brings updates on Iranian assassins and Chinese espionage efforts, alongside positive developments concerning the US-Canada border. Closing the episode, Wright reflects on a landmark Supreme Court decision that ensures Donald Trump's presence on the national ballot next fall, underscoring the ruling's profound implications for American democracy.
America's progressive movement is a big tent of organizations and leaders whose passion for democracy runs deep. Imagine a Venn diagram with one circle representing these organizations and the issues they tackle, from choice, the environment, healthcare and housing to LGBTQ rights, labor rights, and immigration. A parallel circle would display the legislation and public investments needed to protect people and the earth. What is in the intersecting circle? As Daria Dawson, executive director of America Votes, explains on this episode of Power Station, it is voting for progressive changemakers. Every election, whether for president, city council or state election administrators, is our collective opportunity to make our beliefs and expectations known. This juncture is where America Votes thrives. Now in its 20th year, America Votes is the coordination hub for the big tent, the apparatus that labor unions, national and community-based advocacy oriented nonprofits look to for guidance and to make their on-the-ground intel known. Daria, the first Black woman to lead America Votes, is a consummate political campaign professional who feels the stakes for the 2024 election cycle personally. She is also undaunted. Her call to action: Use your voice.
In this week's episode of Politics In Question, Lee takes a big picture look at political polling with Michael Podhorzer. Podhorzer is a senior fellow at the Center for American Process where he writes weekly on election data and political strategy. He is the former political director of the AFL-CIO. Podhorzer founded the Analyst Institute, the Independent Strategic Research Collaborative (ISRC), the Defend Democracy Project, and the Polling Consortium, and helped found America Votes, Working America, For Our Future, and Catalist.Does political polling account for place, community, and political organization? How does the present approach to polling overlook state and local dynamics? To what extent have the Democratic and Republican parties altered their geographical bases of support in recent decades? How have the cultural and economic aspects of place shaped the two parties? And is a kakistocracy? These are some of the questions Michael and Lee ask in this week's episode.

Thursday, September 21st, 2023 Sara Schreiber is the Executive Director of America Votes, the coordination hub of progressive communities. We discuss expanding access to voting, modernizing elections, and getting out the vote up and down the ballot. The last three election cycles saw a real surge of voters: 46 million people who did not vote in the 2016 election, voted in 2018 or 2020. Unprecedented numbers of voter engagement and pro voter policies have also been implemented since 2016. New voters are young and diverse. More than half of them are 18 to 34; nearly half are people of color; and 56 percent of them are women. Although most of them think of themselves as independents, they are more progressive on the issues. They are in favor of abortion rights, gun violence prevention policies, and climate action. Democracy issues were also more salient in the election after the Dobbs decision. In the eighties, younger voters were not necessarily more progressive than older voters. If we have learned anything since 2016 it is that elections have consequences. Donald Trump was not the first politician whose worldview is steeped in racism, misogyny, and anti-immigrant ideology. But he is an outlier in using his platform to undermine our democratic systems and encourage violence. In this episode of Power Station, Daria Dawson, Deputy Executive Director, and National Political Director of America Votes, recalls her path to her current role, including her parent's commitment to voting and civic engagement and her life as an on-the-road political campaign warrior. America Votes, the coordination hub for progressive organizations whose missions include protecting and expanding the right of all Americans to vote, sees itself as a behind-the-scenes player. It makes sense when you understand that it was founded by and continues to grow a powerful cohort of progressive local and national organizations, from labor unions to Black, Latino and AAPI civil rights groups, trusted messengers for their constituencies. Daria reminds us that every election matters, not just the presidential race, and America Votes is there for all of them, even investing in year-round staffing in battleground states. Hear her!
In the span of barely a decade, millions of white Americans fled America's greatest cities for the suburbs, leaving desolation behind them. For decades, historians, politicians, and the press have mindlessly blamed "racism." What's the truth? Charlies talks to Jack Cashill about his new book exploring the truth about the crime and disastrous liberal policies that obliterated one historic neighborhood after another. Plus, Kathy Spence exposes America Votes, the "organization hub" of the left's vast vote harvesting operation, and Charlie warns against the "Green Calf" that is coming to abolish civilization.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Countless progressive organizations seek to engage and mobilize voters, but coordinating those efforts is a mighty task. On this week's episode of "The Downballot," we're joined by Sara Schreiber, the executive director of America Votes, which works with hundreds of partners at the national and state level to deploy the most effective means of urging voters to the polls. Schreiber walks us through how coalitions of like-minded groups are formed and how the work of direct voter contact is divvied up between them. A special focus is on "blue surge" voters—those who, in the Trump era, joined the rolls for the first time—and why ensuring they continue to participate in the political process is the key to progressive victories.Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard also take stock of recent developments in Pennsylvania and Ohio, two Rust Belt neighbors where Republicans—for once—are breathing a sigh of relief after a pair of disastrous 2022 candidates opted against repeat bids in 2024. They then dive into the extremely belated impeachment of Texas' corrupt attorney general by his fellow Republicans and remind listeners to mark their calendars for a major special election that just got scheduled in New Hampshire.Transcript can be found here.

Today we're talking to Delano Squires and Shemeka Michelle, contributors to BlazeTV's "Fearless with Jason Whitlock," about a variety of political and cultural issues. We start by discussing Republicans' willingness to prioritize the war in Ukraine over issues that are hurting Americans, like gas prices and supply chain shortages. It speaks to a greater divide between the GOP establishment and the people they're supposed to represent, as all too often the people who support America-first policies find themselves with little to no representation in Congress. Then we talk about the continuing media and liberal meltdown over the probable overturning of Roe v. Wade. In their desperation to gin up public opposition to overturning the decision, leftists are now linking access to abortion to the success of black women. That leads us into a larger discussion of why the black community keeps voting for Democrats in large numbers, especially considering that many of them hold personal conservative values. --- Today's Sponsors: My Patriot Supply — get a 3-month food kit for every member of your family!
