Are you thinking about retiring, but sense that you're not done yet? Consulting can be an excellent second career. It can be a practical way to redeploy your expertise and experience while persevering flexibility. But what does it take to be a successful consultant as a second career? Amy Rasdal explains how to get started and common obstacles you'll need to overcome. Well, honestly, it's never a first career. It's always a transition. My version, what I want to do and what I help people do, is be a superhero using superpowers for super pay. So the reason I say it's never really a very first career is because you have to do something to build expert skills. So that's being a superhero with a superpower." On Consulting in "Retirement" "I think for a second career, kind of a retirement age career, it's much harder at this point to figure out what superpower am I going to sell? Because by now we all have a lot of superpowers, right? We've accumulated a lot of experience. So it's a little bit tricky. And I think people have some heartburn narrowing down and focusing a little bit. So what I encourage people to do is find that intersection of what you're really good at, your deep experience and expertise -  what you really love to do. There may be some things that you're really good at, but boy, you don't want to do them anymore. I worked with a client who had been a CPA, and then jumped off into the commercial side. But all of her jobs had been in Finance and Accounting. And she said, I am sick of Finance and Accounting. I want to do something a little bit different. So there may be pieces in our experience and expertise that we don't like as much. So what are your deep experiences and expertise? What do you really love? And the piece that you can't miss is: what will the market pay for?" On What Makes Consulting a Good Fit "The most important thing is wanting to do it. You do have to go into it realizing that you really are committing to that ongoing networking, marketing and business development. But I'll tell you it's really about relationships. By this point in our lives, most of us are pretty good at it and we get to choose who we have those relationships with. So some of those nightmare people that we've had to work with all these years, we can let some of those people go - and hopefully there's just a few of them. For those of us thinking about retirement,

The Boss Mom Podcast - Business Strategy - Work / Life Balance - -Digital Marketing - Content Strategy

Many people are eager to escape the stress and unfulfillment of climbing the corporate ladder, but fear that they may not have the same income and level of impact. What they might not realize, is that consulting is a great way to make the switch from employee to high-value entrepreneur. What are the advantages of consulting over having a corporate job? How do we get a steady stream of clients? How does consulting differ from coaching? On this episode, business consultant and founder of Billable at the Beach® Amy Rasdal, shares on getting started in the consulting world and how to turn consulting gigs into a steady business.    To build a successful consulting business, you have to break beyond your circle and immediate network, and start developing the outreach to build new relationships. -Amy Rasdal     3 Things We Learned From This Episode A consulting business is only as healthy as its pipeline (07:08 - 08:23)Many consultants are able to find success early, but the work starts to slow down because the circle of people who know you have already hired you. The key to keeping the business growing is a steady pipeline, which we build by going out of our immediate circle, developing an outreach strategy and following through on it.  Being a present parent and a successful professional are not mutually exclusive (17:29 - 19:04) It often feels like we’re forced to pretend that we don’t have children in order for us to be able to excel professionally, or that they have to be invisible. More people need to see that we can have both children and a great mind.  Consulting can be an impactful and a more lucrative alternative to the corporate ladder (25:07 - 29:07)Becoming a consultant allows us to have more impact than we would as employees, while we also get to earn more money with more time freedom. People often feel like the only way to advance is through the corporate track, but consulting opens us up to more opportunities.   Guest Bio-  Amy is the founder of Billable at the Beach®. As the founder of Billable with Baby, Amy helps liberate other corporate working mothers by empowering them to build their own successful consulting businesses. She's quick on the mute button and can tell you a foolproof way to do a professional conference call from Disneyland.QUICK TAKEAWAYS:Amy's super power is an uncanny ability to get to the “root cause”, which is the thing that is preventing you (or a product) from moving forward successfully. Amy attributes this to her previous career experience and intuition.Focus, prioritization, and confidence have been Amy's tools to help her create a thriving 6-figure business.Oftentimes business owners prioritize the wrong things, because they are afraid of doing the things that will actually move them forward because of fear. If you're finding yourself “busy” all the time, then you're probably not prioritizing the things that actually move you forward every single day.Amy is selective in what she overcomes vs. what she embraces when it comes to hitting and surpassing her goals. If you try to overcome too many things, then she finds that it facilitates overwhelm and then analysis paralysis.Amy's children have never seen her go to work, but they have grown up playing on the floor of her office. Having kids 10 years apart in age has made her so motivated to serve women who also want to have more options and choices for raising her kids. Two pieces of advice from Amy: (1) Starting a consulting business is a lot easier than you're thinking it can be. (2) Never let a day go by without doing something for networking, marketing, and/or business development.RESOURCES:Learn more about Amy through her website: www.billablewithbaby.comFollow Amy on Instagram: www.instagram.com/billablewithbaby/Find Amy on Facebook: www.facebook.com/BillableWithBaby/3 Action Steps to Generate Revenue Now: www.billablewithbaby.com/free-course-3-action-steps-to-generate-revenue-now/Snag a 50% off coupon for your membership to my favorite project management system, Honeybook, through this link: https://bit.ly/allisonhoneybook Get a copy of the 33 Places to Promote Your Lead Magnet for yourself! In this episode of Lean the F*ck Out, we talk with entrepreneur Amy Rasdal about how she leaned out and started her own consulting business. Amy shares tips and tricks on how to build your own consulting business from her own experience and from her own trainings for women looking to lean out and stay home with their children. Launching a Consulting Business Episode Highlights: There are a lot of other options to working a 9-5 job, you can live the life you want to live. Amy works to open minds to the ideas of what those options could be. Just because you work from home doesn’t mean you should make less money. The work that you do is important, not where you do the work. You do not have to give up your career path if you become a consultant. Happiness is a journey. Just when you figure it out something is going to change. Enjoy the ride. As a consultant you are hired for your specific “superpower”. “Be a Superhero with Superpowers and make Superpay.” Your consulting business puts you in a position to be a short term resource for a company, which allows you to get paid more. Use the term “work remotely” instead of “work from home”. Allows for a different mindset with clients. Your home office is “The Office”. Be prepared to be able to answer “What is your rate?” with confidence. Practice it out loud. Practicing makes a huge difference. To start a consulting business you need a computer, a phone, brainpower, and business experience. You do need to have some experience with your superpower before starting your own consulting business. You don’t have to start a business as soon as you launch. Get a client and get your first check in the bank, then keep building. Often when you start your consulting business your first few clients will come quickly, then you have to work to build your the pipeline out from there. The billable work is the easy part, the business development and marketing is the hard part when you start your own consulting business. Look for clients within your own network to get started. Work to constantly to expand your network - always be prospecting. It’s always relationship building that gets you clients, not the social media, etc. You can’t just “build it and they will come.” No matter if you are in corporate or starting your own consulting business, there is always a leap (sidewalk crack or grand canyon) - you can work your way to take these steps, one at a time. Amy Rasdal I am a working mom of two kids, ages 15 and 5.  I traded my corporate job for consulting 15 years ago and make more money than most executives.  Now I live a very blended life with almost no boundaries.  I work and play every day.
