How much do you really have to give (or give up) to be considered "all in" when it comes to your job or your business? This week, I recount a deeply personal journey, pulling back the curtain on the emotional rollercoaster of what seems like an increasingly convoluted job application process. I share the excitement of connecting with what seemed like the perfect team, where my expertise was truly valued, to the sting of having a promising job offer taken away because of the question of commitment. But this conversation goes beyond the nuts and bolts of job hunting. It's an exploration of the controversial demands for "all-in" dedication. I talk about how this expectation can be both a badge of honor and a source of shame, challenging the established norms of what employers expect. It's time to bring to argue for a healthier balance, one that values personal growth just as much as professional achievement, without leading to burnout. Through my experiences, I offer insights and critical perspectives that question the business world's definition of commitment. It's all about the struggles of seeking employment while running a business, and the important lessons on setting boundaries in the pursuit of a career that's truly fulfilling.Support the Show.Connect with Sarah: Get the 13-page free workbook, 3 Ways Your Career is Sabotaging Your Business at https://getcorporaterehab.com/detoxfromcorporate Follow her on Instagram (instagram.com/corporate.rehab) Learn how to work with her HERE (getcorporaterehab.com/services) The Business Blasphemy Podcast is sponsored by Corporate Rehab® Strategic Consulting. A location-independent consulting business that replaces your day job income in a matter of months? That's what Paul Minors achieved with his virtual software consulting side hustle. You might recognize Paul's name. Paul is a productivity blogger and consultant from New Zealand. He was part of a fun productivity roundtable episode we did towards the end of 2016 -- that was episode 197 if you want to go back and check it out. At that time, Paul was putting the wheels in motion on his consulting business centered around specific software tools. If you can hitch your cart to a rising tide of interest in a particular tool, and become the go-to expert in that space, you can do really well. Paul was able to leave his day job within a couple of months of starting his business. He was then able to go traveling with his wife for 6-months while working 15-20 hours a week from his laptop. After arriving back home, he started working full-time on his consulting business. “I noticed the impact of that straight away, within a couple of months I had doubled my income,” Paul told me. It's clear Paul has figured out this business model. This episode is packed with ideas you might be able to apply to your own areas of expertise. Maybe you'll even uncover some areas of expertise you never really considered that special before. Tune in to episode 344 hear: How Paul came across the idea of offering his first consulting services “by accident.” The several different marketing channels that drive targeted traffic to his website How he's added more products and services to his portfolio Full Show Notes: Virtual Consulting: How to Start a Location-Independent Consulting Business New to the Show? Johanna Rothman is one of my favorite people to interview and in this episode, she's back to talk about her new book Successful Independent Consulting: Relationships That Focus on Mutual Benefit. The book is full of insights and practical tips not just for consultants but anyone looking to establish themself and make their presence known in their profession. The conversation also covers the book she published last year, Free Your Inner Nonfiction Writer: Educate, Influence, and Entertain Your Readers because a big part of making your presence known is making sure your voice is heard. What's great about Johanna's books is that they are full of practical answers to the questions you show up with. But in reading Successful Independent Consulting I found it was also addressing the questions I hadn't figured out how to articulate yet, and the questions I didn't realize I was hiding from. She sent me an ebook version of Successful Independent Consulting to prep for the interview, and I was making so many notes in my Kindle that I had to order a hard copy as well, just so I could keep it all straight. During the interview, she shares some stories and examples of the challenges she faced in consulting and how she has overcome them. Whether you work in consulting or are just trying to carve out a space for yourself in the company you work for, you'll get a lot of value out of this conversation and her new book. I can't recommend the book enough. The advice she shares is already having a deep impact on how I approach my work. New Hampshire native Jessica Drolet Wadlow felt college was home away from home being so close. She got involved in many things and was an economic major who went directly into the corporate world mostly out of interest but also because she had some loans to pay off. She landed in a management rotation program at JP Morgan and then went to business school. She switched careers into brand management and found herself at Johnson & Johnson where she stayed for many years.Needing to make a physical move for family reasons, she asked for a telecommuting situation long before that was en vogue and when it meant days spent on no-video conference calls. When she realized she needed another kind of move with the company to accommodate a growing family, she knew what she needed to do.In this episode, find out from Jessica how sometimes the only way to get what you need is to ask for it. About This Episode's GuestInnovation and marketing strategist Jessica Drolet Wadlow is founder and president of J. Wadlow Consulting. For the past fifteen years, she has been an independent consultant working with large firms such as Johnson & Johnson, McKinsey, and Walgreens, as well as start-ups in need of accelerating growth via new business ventures and new business models. On this episode, Mark Nestor, the President of Independent Consulting and Risk Management Services, will discuss Audit vs Performance Review, Reviews vs Benchmarking. Overview - the differences between an audit, performance review and a benchmarking study: Audits are an analysis under prescribed standards, normally undertaken by a qualified independent firm. They're looking to follow national or state guidelines, and are marginally collaborative between the auditor and the client. A performance review is a much broader view, blended of informal and formal activities, and can be conducted internally or externally. Whereas benchmarking, is a very informal process, that's predefined quantitative and qualitative analysis based on the entities' key metrics using either national standards, such as IRIS - the insurance regulatory information systems - but it's important to understand the IRIS standards are really not mandated or applicable in the public entity or the public sector. The audit, performance review and benchmarking are all tied together, but it's very difficult to do a performance review or benchmark without having the financial auditing information serve as the foundation. Your performance review and benchmarking are key metrics that you can use to help manage and implement activities that either are derived from the performance review or key activities that may arrive out of the audit process itself.

A location-independent consulting business that replaces your day job income in a matter of months? That's exactly what Paul Minors accomplished with his virtual software consulting business.
